Depew retires after 45 years at Wellsville's Giant Food Mart

WELLSVILLE — Doug Depew has pretty much seen it all in his 45 years of employment at Giant Food Mart, from several power outages before the store had a generator to the water main break that flooded the store in January 2014. He began work in the late 1970s on the meat room clean-up crew. From there his career expanded into roles such as assistant store manager in September 1980, followed by store manager in July 1981. For several years he took on the role of operations manager, until October 2013, when he took over as the meat department manager. He took over a role as perishable manager in 2017, overseeing the meat, produce, deli and bakery departments. In his last role at the Giant Food Mart, he was general manager from 2018 until his retirement in late 2019. As someone with great knowledge of operations for the entire store, Depew was a valuable asset to its customers, Wellsville Giant Food Mart owner Mike Berardi said. “One of his famous lines would be when a customer asked where a product was located in the store, beans for example, Doug would always respond with ‘they’re in the bean aisle’ as he would walk with the customer to its location,” Berardi said.

The owner added that customer service was always Depew’s number one priority. “You couldn’t make it past him in an aisle without him acknowledging and greeting you,” Berardi said. “He was always quick to solve customerand employee-related issues and each party was always satisfied in the end.” Berardi said Depew treated everyone equally and he was known as the “go-to guy” for special requests from customers or for co-workers seeking information or advice. “Customers and employees all had great respect for Doug as a manager and as a person,” Berardi said. The meat department crew will always remember Depew’s delicious home-cooked meals with a side of hot sauce that he would bring in for them, Berardi said. During special meat sales,

Depew would cook up things such as lasagna, shepherd’s pie, pulled pork or Italian sausage, just to name a few. Following in his father’s footsteps, Depew was very involved with the Petrolia Hose Company in his free time away from work. He enjoys spending time with his longtime companion, Judy Gatten, his four children, Danielle, Kimberly, Angela and Bryan, as well as his grandchildren. “While he will definitely be missed as part of the Giant Food Mart team, we believe that our customers will miss him even more,” Berardi said. “It’s pretty amazing the dedication Doug displayed in working for one company his entire career,” the owner added. “On behalf of the Berardi family past and present, we thank him for the decades of service to the company and our community.”

ALDRED — The inspiring story of an Alfred State College faculty member’s journey to save his son’s life caught the attention of a widely-viewed national news program. Sean Kelley, an instructor with the Alfred State Electrical, Machine Tool and Welding Technology Department, lost 40 pounds in order to be able to donate a portion of his liver to save his 1-year-old son, Sawyer. The child has a genetic disorder called Alagille syndrome and needed a liver transplant. The headline on the website for ABC’s “Good Morning America” states, “This dad lost 40 pounds to save his son’s life: ‘It was pretty overwhelming.’” According to Dr. George Mazariegos, Sawyer “needed a liver transplant because his liver had decompensated

so badly that even at this early age at just over a year old, he really could not survive more than a month without a liver transplant.” As mentioned in the story, Alagille syndrome “affects multiple organs in the body, including the liver and heart. It causes liver damage and is associated with several heart problems.” The condition affects three of Kelley’s seven children. Initially, Kelley and his wife, Josie, worked with the team at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to find a donor. Kelley realized, however, that he himself may be able to serve as a potential donor. In order to go through the evaluation process, though, he needed to lose 40 pounds. Kelley began the weight-loss process in August 2019 by tracking his caloric intake and exercising as much as possible. Finally, one

day at work, he received a phone call confirming that he was indeed able to be a donor for his son. The transplant took place on Dec. 19 and was a success. UPMC recorded photos and video during the family’s journey and documents how Kelley believes he and his son “are recovering smoothly despite a few postsurgery complications.” Kelley adds that he and his family, who reside in West Almond in Allegany County, are “fortunate they were able to have the transplant done” and that they “hope to educate others about how being a living donor can save another’s life.” Upon its release earlier this month, the “GMA” article was one of the top stories on its home page and the number one online video of the day. Hope Center offers seminar on developing caring communities WELLSVILLE — The Hope Center will offer its first seminar and training of the year for churches and other community organizations seeking to develop or expand effective Communities of Care within their congregations and service areas. The free session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this coming Saturday at the Center, 4194 Bolivar Road, Suite 5, Wellsville (next to McDonald's). The purpose of the session is to help equip volunteers, potential volunteers and their

churches, along with other community organizations, in developing a holistic (physical, mental/emotional and spiritual) health approach to helping meet needs of congregants and the general public using a System of Care or Communities of Care approach. Casey Jones, Transformation Initiative for Building Healthy Communities Through Healthy Families and planning group chair for the Hope Center, says the interactive presentation will differ from a program approach to services

delivery in that the focus will be on greater overall effectiveness at lesser costs, both in money and other resources, which includes working together to achieve maximum results Components will include identifying the real issue or issues that are trying to be addressed, developing person-centered approaches to services delivery, engaging resources that already are at work for a unified approach to solving problems, avoiding selfcentered or silo solutions that can be more expensive to develop and implement, and more.

Jones said a purpose of the Hope Center, dubbed A Hub of Hope of Allegany County Churches, is to help equip churches to establish Communities of Care that will enable the Center to connect individuals and families with caring churches that are able to provide additional assistance. “The church is the one entity that interacts with individuals and families on a regular basis all year around, and often many times a week,” he said. “Therefore, it is important that these resources be prepared to assist those who

Growing up on a dairy farm in Livingston County, Young took her knowledge to Albany, where she chaired the Senate Agriculture Committee, as well as the Senate Finance Committee Young noted agriculture is a $44.8 billion industry across the state, with 35,000 farms with more than 7.3 million acres of farmland — leading the nation in cottage cheese, sour cream and yogurt production, and second in products like maple syrup, string beans and cabbage. While New York used to be a center of the hops industry, those growers are largely centered in

the Pacific Northwest, Young said. With the abundance of arable land, hops and other beer-making crops like oats and barley represent an option for farmers to diversify their portfolios. “There are over 500 breweries — craft breweries — in New York state right now,” she said, including several in Allegany County that could add “locally grown” to their labels. “These are ingredients that our farmers can grow … we have that ability to grow that agricultural economy.” Young said one example of a promising startup is an entrepreneur who wants to set up a verticallyintegrated processing facility in Chautauqua County for hops and grains for New York’s growing craft beer industry. This would provide a nearby outlet for processing grains

like wheat, rye and barley and hops. Along with helping with new varieties of plants to raise, Young said her group is also focusing on making technology work for local farmers. Some of the products being worked on using technology to solve important problems, she said. In one project, AgriTech is working with a company to use lasers to zap the mites responsible for colony collapse disorder off of honeybees as the bees fly into their hive. Another project is embedding microchips in apple trees to track moisture levels — and letting orchard owners know when to irrigate the trees in order to get the biggest, tastiest apples. BELMONT — The Drama Department at Genesee Valley Central School will present the Broadway musical “Newsies” on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. in the school auditorium. Directed by Donna Slawson and Lindsay Simpson, “Newsies” tells the true story of how kids from New York City changed the world by “carrying the banner” and standing up for their rights as newspaper boys in the 1890s. “I decided to direct this production after taking a group of 8th graders to see “Newsies” last year,” said co-director Donna Slawson. “The students expressed sincere interest and excitement to bring this musical back to GV. Our students have taken on roles of responsibility, learned new dances, sung for the first time, and pushed outside of their comfort zones

to put on an amazing performance.” The production of “Newsies” has also provided an opportunity for teachers to incorporate Genesee Valley’s emphasis on STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). According to Mark Levine, Technology teacher, “one of the most common questions asked by students in nearly any subject is, ‘When am I going to use this?’ The focus of STEAM education at Genesee Valley is doing ‘real’ things, connecting learning to practical applications that matter to students.” In Levine’s Design for Entertainment class students researched the necessary environment for the musical, decided upon the design direction and built scene props to create the illusion of

Other classes were involved in various aspects of the production, as well. The curriculum of Slawson’s STEAM class covered the Industrial Revolution and child labor, providing another opportunity for real-world application and cross-curricular learning opportunities. “Newsies became the perfect occasion to highlight how the arts can be the driving force behind our learning,” said Lindsay Simpson, co-director of the show.

“While the audience will be blown away by the talent onstage, they will also see how the intersection of classes and subjects from across disciplines all came together to create an unforgettable experience.” Originally released in 1992 as a Disney film, “Newsies” was adapted for the stage in 2011, enjoying a successful run on Broadway followed by a national tour. The cast of Genesee Valley’s production includes 56 individuals representing grades 4-12, in addition to some Genesee Valley staff members. This is the second CWSSI plan that Allegany County has submitted. New York State now requires that a plan be submitted annually through 2021. It has been a collaborative process amongst Allegany County elected officials. Shared Service panel

members are required to meet at least two times during the year to discuss and develop a plan of action to identify potential tax savings through sharing services. While this plan does not identify a large amount of savings, it does reflect a large amount of effort put forth to make the process happen. There are still areas of interest that the panel would like to participate in that remain beyond our reach due to existing statutes.

We continue to remain hopeful that legislation will be changed and allow participation in more cost savings opportunities in rural areas like a health care consortium. Our county government, towns, and villages already have a vast history of sharing services, most of which have been documented for decades. In the future, we will continue to work to find creative and sustainable ways to provide tax savings to the residents in our municipalities.

ALBANY — Assemblyman Joseph M. Giglio joined Republican colleagues last week in calling for the repeal of bail reform measures passed and enacted for the new year. “Protecting the citizens of New York State is of utmost importance,” Giglio said during a press conference in Albany. “Recent tragedies which have occurred in our communities make clear the need to repeal these changes.” The GOP call was led by new Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay, R-Pulaski, along with members of the Assembly Republican Conference. At the press conference, lawmakers were joined by families directly affected by the new bail laws, and lawenforcement officials who expressed concerns with the new requirements. The mother of a Syracuse homicide victim Wednesday morning stood next to state

Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay, R-Pulaski, to decry the state’s recently enacted bail reform. Jennifer Payne, of Syracuse, whose daughter, Sarah Tombs, 22, was shot to death, blasted Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Democrats for passing a law that allowed her daughter’s killer to be freed before trial. “This is unacceptable,” Payne said, according to syracuse.com. “My daughter’s killer is walking the streets as my family and I continue to pick up the pieces from the trauma.” Tombs was killed by her boyfriend, Darien Shellman, in the Syracuse apartment they shared with Tombs’ 4-year-old daughter. The child ran into the bedroom moments after Shellman’s gun went off, shooting Tombs in the head. Shellman admitted to the shooting, but has said it was an accident and prosecutors are pursuing an unintentional

manslaughter charge. Intentional homicides can still result in bail, while unintentional ones cannot, syracuse.com reported. A judge had set bail for Shellman at $75,000 cash or $150,000 bond after his April 2019 arrest under the old rules. But the same judge, state Supreme Court Justice Gordon Cuffy, said last week that he had no choice under bail reform but to release Shellman pending trial. “These laws are simply unworkable from a legal and law enforcement standpoint,” said Giglio, who has a background in law enforcement. “Judicial discretion is being assaulted by these laws and lawyers are being forced to conduct pretrial discovery in ways that are unprecedented.” Advocates pointed out Wednesday that Tombs’ death was not a typical homicide in that Shellman admitted to the killing, saying it was an accident. He’s a Navy veteran, has no criminal record, called 911 after the shooting and remained on scene until police arrived.

GOP lawmakers argue the reforms, which went into effect Jan. 1, were painted as a way to improve bail procedures for low-level, non-violent offenders. In reality, the lawmakers say, the reforms amount to a “get-out-of-jail free card” for dangerous individuals. Also in attendance at the press conference was Sheila Harris, cousin of Maria “Rosie” Osai, a 35-yearold mother of three who was struck and killed by an unlicensed, hit-and-run driver in Rockland County on Christmas Eve. The driver was immediately released without bail pursuant to the new law. “This is bad policy that jeopardizes the integrity of the judicial system,” Giglio said. Area law enforcement officials, including Olean City Police Chief Jeff Rowley, Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb and Allegany County Sheriff Ricky L. Whitney, have expressed concerns with the bail and other criminal justice reforms that were passed this past year.
