Introduction
Thank You from the EO Team!
Welcome to Ellarslie Open
42! This annual juried exhibition is a testament to the cultural vitality and creative spirit of our community, from the talented artists who enter their work … to the dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers who catalog, label, lay out, and hang the artwork with care … to the hospitality team whose members make the show’s opening weekend truly special … to the sponsors and advertisers whose financial support helps ensure that the Trenton City Museum remains a vibrant and welcoming part of our community.
We appreciate the breadth of experience and the deep connection with art that Sheryl Liebman Fisher drew from as she narrowed 500 entered pieces to a final selection of 124 works across the categories of painting, photography, works on paper, sculpture, and digital art. The show is truly a visual feast!
For the third year, all EO finalists were invited to submit unframed artwork for the show’s portfolio racks, expanding your opportunity to get lost in art. So, peruse the exhibition galleries
and portfolio pieces to your heart’s content: we hope you find just the right piece to take home when the show ends!
With appreciation,

The History of the Ellarslie Open
Ellarslie, an Italianate villa, was built for Henry McCall Sr. of Philadelphia as a summer residence in 1848. The architect selected to design Ellarslie was John Notman, known for designing the first Italianate building in America in Burlington, NJ, and the first Renaissance Revival building, the Athenaeum in Philadelphia. Notman was locally recognized for also designing the 1845 expansion of the New Jersey State House and the design for the State Hospital, which was also begun in 1848.
In February 1881, Henry McCall Jr. sold Ellarslie to George Farlee for $25,000. Seven years later, in September of 1888, the city of Trenton acquired the property from Farlee for $50,000, which also included the surrounding 80 acres, which would become the city’s first public park, Cadwalader Park, designed by the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted.
The City of Trenton opened the first museum here in 1889, closing several years later. Ellarslie has been a restaurant, ice cream parlor and monkey house. The building itself
has been home to several noted Trenton families over the years, and in 1971 Trenton City Council passed a resolution to create the Trenton City Museum.
The Trenton City Museum opened in 1978 in Ellarslie Mansion with an exhibition from our permanent collection of Trenton cultural history. Ellarslie Mansion is included in the National Registry of Historic Places.
In 1982, the Ellarslie Open was established to encourage local artists to submit their work for judging and display. Since then, the Trenton City Museum has displayed the work of more than eight hundred local and regional artists, many selected on the basis of work they submitted to the Ellarslie Open. Over the years, the Ellarslie Open became a significant exhibition in its own right, drawing on the work of professional artists from the tri-state region and beyond, while encouraging and recognizing emerging artists. Today, the Ellarslie Open serves as mid-Jersey’s premier annual juried exhibit.

Liebman
Fisher, Juror
Sheryl Liebman Fisher discovered her passion for contemporary art while earning a degree in Art History and Business at New York University. With over 20 years of experience in the gallery world, both in New York City and London, she is currently an Associate Director at Gallery Henoch in Manhattan. Sheryl also holds a certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts from NYU and the Appraisers Association of America. Her extensive gallery background has positioned her as a key bridge between artists and collectors. She thrives on discovering emerging talents and new trends in the art world, and remains dedicated to supporting innovative voices and bringing exciting artwork to the forefront of contemporary art.
A Note from the Juror
It was a great honor to be invited to jury this year’s Ellarslie Open. What a thrill to be part of such a longstanding and vibrant program, one that brings together some of the region’s most talented and diverse artists. I knew the task would not be easy, and the quality of the submissions proved me right. I’m deeply grateful to every artist who shared their work and to the amazing museum staff and volunteers who welcomed me so warmly on this journey.
From the moment I arrived at the Trenton City Museum, I was struck by the beauty of the setting, nestled in Cadwalader Park, surrounded by nature. And then, just as quickly, I found myself resenting the building ever so slightly for not having limitless walls. Truly, every artist who submitted work brought something worthy of exhibition.
I had the privilege of spending time with each piece, taking in the skill, passion, and sincerity that radiated from the work. In making selections,

I considered not only visual strength but also how pieces might resonate together. I was drawn to works that conveyed beauty not just in the classical sense of color or form, but in storytelling, message, and technique. In challenging times, beauty offers a kind of solace. It invites us in, calms us, gives us clarity. It is a reminder of what connects us.
Art, at its core, makes life more beautiful. It offers us pause, perspective, and, at times, a muchneeded moment of escape. I hope each visitor to this exhibition approaches it with an open heart and mind and leaves feeling uplifted and inspired by the beauty that surrounds us.
