Fashion magazine called Elle, dated September 2014. This is a typical layout for Elle magazine for all countries it sells to.
The mast head is in the top third of the cover which is the typical position to have it in.
The mast head is also half being obstructed by the image and the other half is over the top. This is a typical style for Elle magazine as it sets their own unique style – own brand identity. This gives off the feeling that the mast head and the main image are just as important as each other. The use of having a cover line in between the mast head title is a typical thing for Elle magazine. The emphasises the importance of this cover line because it stands out from the other lines and it is between the mast head which most readers have to look at to know the magazine.
This magazine doesn’t have a selling line, this suggests that the do not need a selling line to sell magazines. This also suggests that the magazine doesn’t need to be known for their selling line or need to prove anything. The largest font size is usually for the main feature article and usually that is associated with the cover image. For this cover the main feature article appears to not be – on most of the covers for Elle this is the case however some are larger. The colour scheme is the usual three or four convention because there are three colours, black, peachy pink and white. This colour scheme fits with the target audience of females. The language is quite basic because it is trying to target at a wide range of females.
The main image is of Kate Upton, it is a medium shot of her and she is giving a direct mode of address. The main image has been used because one of the articles is on her. The font size for her cover line isn’t the largest which suggests that this is not the main feature article. The mast head, main feature article, the cover line that links to the image and the second feature article all have some text that is the same colour. This suggests that these are important and make the text stand out more. Kate’s leotard / what she is wearing underneath the coat match some of the text because they are both black.
Usually the cover line associated with the cover image is usually across the bottom third but on this cover it is on the right third which also downgrades the importance of the article. The target audience for this magazine would be female midteens to early twenties.
