Message from The Grand Exalted Ruler

Message from The Exalted Ruler

To All District Deputies, Exalted Rulers, Officers and Members: As we wind down from the Holiday Season and enter the New Year, I want to challenge each of you to make this the best year your Lodge has ever experienced. There are three months left in the Lodge year, and it is very important that you compare your accomplishments with your goals. I hope you are on track to surpass your goals. If you have not reached the goals, it is crucial that you not accept anything less than attaining them. There is adequate time to meet the Elks National Foundation’s $4.50 minimum per capita, a positive gain in Lodge membership, and the many other objectives that you wish to attain. You and your Lodge Members need to respond, make some plans on how to get to where you want to be, and go to work. Do not let complacency rule you or the Lodge. With challenging times, both economic and social, come great opportunities for those willing to seize the moment. While we can read or watch many negative issues surrounding our lives, we can also feel the warmth and satisfaction of all of the good deeds of our Order. Share the good works with others. Many people in your community would welcome the opportunity to be a part of a progressive, positive and “passionate” organization if approached. It is way past time that we let people know who we are and they can participate. I would encourage you to ask. As we initiate new Members, I would ask that you get them involved very early, but not as Chairman or as an Officer immediately. Groom the Member into your Lodge. As you visit your Lodge and sit at the same table with the same people each visit...look around and shake some hands, pat some backs in your Lodge. Some of the feedback I am getting from new Members is that they do not feel welcome. Now is time to “Promote Elks Passion.” Seize the opportunity! Sincerely and Fraternally, Hon. Michael F. Smith, Grand Exalted Ruler

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday. First, let me thank Ann Marie Wood for reaching and exceeding our goal of 2,000 golf clubs for our overseas service personnel. She met this last challenge so fast I didn’t have a chance to turn around. Well, no more numerical goals; the next is infinity, or as Buzz Lightyear says, “To infinity and beyond.” For those not exposed to young children, he is a character from Toy Story. Thanks again for a great job with over 2,200 clubs shipped. R.D. Wright, our chairperson for the Hoop Shoot, has found the next JJ Redick. The young man’s name is Reed Pendleton, and he shot 24 of 25 baskets. Congratulations to the young man, and he will be moving to the next step in January. Thanks R.D., and thanks to the Cave Spring Baptist Church and all who helped. It is great to have this event back. Lots of events coming up, so please join us for a good time. A “Back to the Beach” dance will be held on the 28th, with our Valentine’s dance on February 12, and the St. Patrick’s Dance in March. Don’t forget to participate in the second annual St Patrick’s parade. We had a great time last year, and it is only a short walk. Rumor has it that John Smith is painting his red truck green this year – now that’s Irish! Barbara and I had the pleasure to attend the lighting ceremony at the Elks National Home. What a treat! If you haven’t been, you need to go and see the Home. It truly is one of the Elks’ treasures. Fraternally, Vince Brandtner, Exalted Ruler

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Saturday, March 12, 2011 PER Tim Shepherd (L to R), Kathy Duncan, ER Vince Brandtner, Sandy Kirtley

Break out the green and think Irish as the Roanoke Elks Lodge 197 gears up again to enter the annual Roanoke St. Patty’s Day Parade. We had great participation last year and hope to add more Elk supporters participating in 2011. This is the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia and is dedicated to the honor of local veterans and all those who protect and serve. Trophies are awarded for the most creative float or parade entry in the following categories: Best Overall, Best Neighborhood, Best Celtic Theme, Most Patriotic, Best Business and Best Non-Profit.

The Elks Lodge 197 needs volunteers to form a committee to bring ideas forward and create our second annual entry to display and reflect all that we do to give back to our community. The preliminary plan is to tow a flatbed trailer with decorative bunting and other displays. Anyone interested in joining the committee or otherwise volunteering to help with this project please, contact John Smith at JWMSmith@msn.com. _________________________________

Manager’s Corner - Roanoke Elks #197 was pleased to raise enough donations to deliver meals to 75 needy families in our community for Thanksgiving dinner. Our faithful Elks delivered the baskets to the families on Nov. 20. Each family received enough food for 2 weeks including all the fixin’s for Thanksgiving as well as toothpaste, shampoo and such. This is an annual tradition for Elks #197 with special thanks to our absent member Don Kirtley, who was the heart and soul of the program that lives on in his name.
