Roanoke Elks Our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is underway. As in the past, grocery bags with a list of six items on them will be placed in the upstairs foyer, lounge, dining room, and the downstairs bar, starting Oct. 1st. We are asking every member and every Auxiliary member to please pick up a bag (or two), fill it with the listed items, and return it to the Lodge by November 13.

If you prefer, a gift of cash would be great. The money is used for turkeys, bread, milk, eggs, and margarine. Those of us who have been blessed must remember the less fortunate and give back a little. We will deliver the baskets on November 20. Drivers will deliver in teams of two (one MUST be a member). Sign up in the Lodge. We need AT LEAST 25 teams of drivers!

Steve Nelson will be our DJ playing a variety of music and light hors d’oeuvres will be served with a cash bar. All proceeds will go to the Elks National Foundation. $10.00 per person.

Message from The Grand Exalted Ruler To All District Deputies, Exalted Rulers, Officers and Members: The holiday season is upon us. November is a month when we all have the opportunity to give thanks for all we have received. And what have we received? Freedom to do what we want, freedom to be who we want to be, freedom to go about our daily lives without fear, freedom to enjoy our lives and time with our families and friends, freedom to follow our dreams and, most importantly, freedom to help others. But, who gave us these freedoms? It is the Veterans, and these freedoms continue due to the sacrifices of the members of our active-duty military. Take time during this holiday season to remember our sacred promise: “So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” We should remember our Veterans and members of our active-duty military each and every day, but especially on November 11, Veterans Day. Take every opportunity to thank them and their families. Promote Elks Passion by showing our Veterans and active-duty military members and their families that we as Elks do Care and do Share. Be loud, be proud and be visible when helping our Veterans and military members. Sandra and I join each of you and your families in this time of Thanksgiving. We wish for you a wonderful time with your families as we all gather together in giving thanks for all of the blessings and freedoms that we enjoy and have and continue to receive. Sandra and I pray that you have a safe, happy and fun Thanksgiving and ask that you continue to pray for our troops, Veterans, our Order, and this great nation we call America. Sincerely and Fraternally, Hon. Michael F. Smith, Grand Exalted Ruler

Balloting – November 9

Message from The Exalted Ruler Leaves are falling, yard tools are put away, and fall is here with winter close behind. Let’s not go into hibernation. Your Elks Lodge is the place to be for fellowship with your brother and sister ELKS. We are a year-round organization and need your support to maintain it. There are a lot of exciting events planned. Upcoming is the ENF dance on Nov 13, Memorial service on Dec 5, members only Christmas party on Dec 19, and New Year’s Eve with the Blues Brothers. The District Deputy visit went very well. Thank you to Bill Chase, Wayne Hall, and David Stultz for getting us ready for this important visit. Next time you see one of these folks, thank them for a job well done. It means a lot to our Lodge. If you missed the Oktoberfest, you missed a great time. We enjoyed a visit from our State President, Jim Powell, and his wife, Leah, District Deputy, John Owen and his wife, Nancy, State Vice President, Darryl Myers, and his wife, Karen. We especially enjoyed Karen’s yodeling abilities, along with others. We also enjoyed having a group from the National Home, and a fun-loving group from the Roanoke Valley Newcomers Club. We appreciate the support from these folks. I would like to thank my daughter, Kellie Rice, for her expert German cooking. And a special thanks to my brother Elks, Bill Bestpitch and Chuck Jordan, for helping me make the sausage. Thank all of you for supporting this event. Thanks to Mike Via for putting on a great Bocce tournament again. It was great weather day and all participants had a great time. Look for the spring tournament. It’s a great day to spend at the Lodge. Busy ELKS are happy ELKS. Fraternally, Vince Brandtner, Exalted Ruler
