Antonio’s Italian Restaurant Paul Cataldo was born in Italy. His family immigrated to the United States when he was five, and his dad and brothers built trailers and RVs. For a while. The live entertainment industry has been devastated by the impact of Covid-19, and The Lerner Theatre has not been an exception. Millions of live event professionals continue to be out of work while the industry tries to navigate what post-Covid will look like for its future, grasping at hopes that summer 2021 will see a resume of live entertainment across the country.

As a City-owned entity, Lerner Theatre management has been maintained through the pandemic and has focused on ways to continue to bring arts and entertainment to the community. This includes outdoor programming, virtual programming, and Christmas window displays. Additionally, Lerner management has completed capital improvements to the technical theatre that includes upgrades to sound and lighting that will set The Lerner forward for the next 5-10 year.

Lerner management is moving forward with the booking of shows in the third and fourth quarters, with national tours to the facility in 2021. They are also continuing to work with local renters to bring events in a smaller capacity in the first and second quarter of 2021.

As new protocols and safety mitigation continue to change from health officials, the number one priority of The Lerner continues to be the safety of patrons, staff, artists, and volunteers. As The Lerner looks forward to re-opening in 2021 with live entertainment, it will work closely with the local health department to ensure safety for all when returning to the theatre to once again enjoy the crown jewel of Michiana.

Ed Hayden, better known as Eddy, has become a staple of Downtown Elkhart and a local favorite with his awesome, gourmet hot dogs and friendly, down-to-earth disposition. Many know Eddy from his hot dog cart days, when he would set up in front of the bars downtown as a welcome oasis of deliciousness for the drunken masses late into the night. As business started to boom with local events and pub crawls, he was able to focus full time on the cart and soon began searching for the proper space to become the go-to hot dog restaurant in Elkhart.

“Basically I just enjoy food, I enjoy trying different things. I make it up sometimes. Sometimes I’m just tinkering around with something. It’s a simple process, to be a gourmet hotdog shop. You gotta go above and beyond,” Eddy said. From the tried and true Chicago Dog to some of Eddy’s creative creations like the Monica, there is something for everyone on Hotdogeddy’s menu. He even offers a vegan alternative “hot dog” made with a marinated carrot and fresh toppings. One of Eddy’s goals was to become the local hub that he has blossomed into, shooting to become the place ‘Where everybody knows your name’.

Not all car washes are created equal, according to the owners of locally based Drive & Shine. Since its founding by Haji Tehrani back in 1997, Drive & Shine has sought to separate itself from other car washes by the appearance of its buildings, the courtesy of its employees and the quality of its services.

ADEC is a nonprofit organization with the mission to proudly advocate for and serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) so they live lives full of informed choice and possibility. ADEC is dedicated to fully supporting individuals with disabilities and breaking down barriers through active community education, advocacy, and commitment.

• ADEC was founded in 1952 by a group of families who wanted something more for their children with disabilities. In a time when people with IDD were sent to institutions or hidden in basements, ADEC’s founding families dreamed that their children would one day be embraced by their communities and realize their true potential. The very first employees at ADEC were the parents themselves as they worked to give their children opportunities no one has thought possible.

• Today, ADEC employs over 350 people and provides a variety of services for over 1,300 people with IDD each year: • Residential services - At ADEC’s group homes, residents work on building independent living skills with around-the-clock care. ADEC’s supported living program helps adults with IDD experience independence in their daily lives.

• Employment services - Employees at ADEC Industries perform packaging and assembly work for industrial customers across the country and manufacture the Silver Linings trash bags that are used in all state government offices in Indiana. ADEC also helps people with IDD find meaning and purpose through jobs in the community. ADEC matches workers to open jobs in the area while also providing job coaching, training, assistance, and support. Additionally, ADEC provides work for people with disabilities through Gaining Grounds Coffee Shop and Art by ADEC. • Day services – ADEC’s day service staff members take time to discover the natural abilities and interests of the people we serve and then challenge them to work at developing skills related to their abilities and interests. Daily activity choices include gardening, ceramics, painting, sewing, baking, technology, team and individual sports, and volunteering at community organizations.

• Therapies - ADEC recreational therapy services are an activity-based intervention to address the assessed needs of an individual, from recognizing emotion to gripping silverware. Through music therapy, individuals learn everyday routines like making their bed and brushing their teeth. Behavior therapy services create and reinforce positive behaviors.

• Guardianship - ADEC’s corporate guardianship program serves more than 60 adults with IDD by helping with personal decisions, advocating for them, and protecting them.

• Summer camp - ADEC’s Camp Wy.Not is a full summer camp that serves youth with IDD. Activities include field trips, arts and crafts, a talent show, and more.

LOCAL CHARITY Council on Aging of Elkhart County

About COA Since 1975, Council on Aging of Elkhart County has served the aging and disabled population in Elkhart County, enriching their lives through its Transportation, In Home Care, and Life Enrichment programs. Driven by a mission to enable those who suffer from diminished abilities, they serve grandparents, parents and siblings throughout the area. The Council is there when needed, for some there is no one else.

Support COA relies on community support in the form of donations to support their mission. Insurance, and similar coverage plans, pay only a portion of the fees associated with the Council’s supporting services.

Without people like you, the Council wouldn’t be able to change the lives of those in our neighborhoods Record-breaking Year Council on Aging has proven to be both resilient and necessary through this difficult time. Donations fell and other local businesses closed, but the Council’s business increased. So much so that it was the best year recorded in its history in regard to the number of trips and hours of in home care provided. The pandemic only highlights the importance of giving assistance to the vulnerable aging population. “Everyone here, from our front-line drivers and caregivers to our managers and support staff, all jumped in to ensure each client was safe in our care,” said David M. Toney, CEO. Looking towards the future, the Council continues to challenge itself to keep breaking records, so everyone in need receives the care deserved COVID-19 The Council has held client safety as a number one priority from the onset of COVID-19, as increased safety measures were implemented and vital services added. Enhanced vehicle cleaning, mandatory utilization of masks and gloves, and limited contact became daily protocol for the safety of both clients and staff. They also made the difficult decision in May to close the Life Enrichment Activity Center until it is safe to gather again. To counteract the loss of this socialization program and care for those isolated at home, a volunteer program, called Caring Connections, was developed as an outreach program.

In addition, the grocery shopping program was converted to a grocery delivery service and a partnership with the Northern Indiana Food Bank to deliver food boxes was developed. Anything for their clients.
