Home on the Rangely is a magazine and blog dedicated to the culture, events, businesses and history of a certain tiny town situated on the high desert range in the northwest corner of Colorado. We are Rangely’s first monthly magazine & advertising venue created by, for, and about our community, our region, our businesses, and our citizens.

We aim to keep our community and visitors informed on authentic life in Northwestern Colorado, feature Northwest Colorado’s most comprehensive community and events calendar, display art & photography by locals, and offer engaging content about events, businesses, local lore, and history.

Please give us grace as we stumble through this first year; we are learning as we go, and I invite you on the journey....We’d love your contributions, photos, ideas, stories, anything you have to offer! WILD WEST...

I’ve been an artist for over twenty five years. The longer I make things, the more aware I am of where they go and what they do when they leave my hands.

As a youth, I moved frequently, until my thirties when I inadvertently put down roots in this tiny isolated town--a windswept landscape dotted with pinyon, sage and a culture as new to me as my encounters living overseas. The former years spent in adventure, new experiences, and loneliness made even my child’s heart aware it housed a void filled with a longing for home. I found it here, for now.

Like dry clay encountering the heat of a kiln, life in a remote rural community, and motherhood, has changed me. My gaze, so long turned outward toward galleries and loyal but distant customers, focused closer. My work expanded from objects to experiences created for my small town. This magazine is one, and celebrates the experience of loving people, environment and the history as it happens over time.

You will not find traditional ‘Western Art’ in this issue, but you will get a glimpse into a world of creativity and culture you might not have suspected when you first drove into town. And trust me...I could have easily filled twice as many pages or more!

My “Pottery Shop” on Main St. is housed in one of Rangely’s original 1940’s boom era buildings. As far as I can discern, it was originally a boot maker / shoe repair business, then operated for many years as a beauty shop. Below, right to left: “The Beauty Bar” still in business in the 1980s, by 2004 it had been empty and boarded up for many years, quickly on its way to becoming a blighted property. In 2004, a cheap purchase price and an extensive renovation over a two year period tranformed it into my studio and the building you now see on Main St. (see ad on facing page.) That is...if you can find it behind the two huge trees out front...not yet planted in the 80’s photo below, but which have more than doubled in size since the 2004 image.

County Character Samantha Wade: Finding her Voice

Ethereal, keening notes ascend and bounce off metal, reverberating and amplifying in a musical counterpoint to the wind billowing outside. The force of nature undulates with the lone song of a ravenhaired woman, the notes raw and unrestrained. Turning, she asks of my first experience in The TANK, “Was it what you expected?”

Astounded by the sheer vigor of her voice and the power returned by The TANK, I utter, “More than I could have hoped.” Samantha Wade is the Voice of The TANK. Wade is, perhaps, one of the most inspiring individuals I have encountered in my 27 years. She fought to climb out of depression as a teenager, her body unhealthy and overweight, her hair tattered and tangled.

Through the influence of The TANK and the people affiliated with it, she has become a confident and confidence-inspiring individual. Without seizing the small miracle that makes The TANK what it is, she would not have found her voice, nor would The TANK have the same voice without her.

For almost three decades, the wonders of The TANK were exclusive to a select group of musicians that included “discoverer” of The TANK Bruce Odland. He had been recording the sounds around Rangely in 1976 when he was approached by two burly men who astounded Odland with a sampling of how sound worked within the old water tank. He would introduce sound artists and musicians to the space over time and create a lasting friendship with neighbor to The TANK Barbara Wade.

“My grandmother, Barbara Wade, had TANK guests over at her house, and she would feed them dinner, visit and tell them her jokes, and at the end of the night, they (the musicians) would go up to The TANK,” Wade says. Her expression is bittersweet because the force that was Barbara passed in 2015. For a moment, you can almost see the grape-bedecked kitchen overseen by the mannequin hovering at the doorway’s edge, the woman making grown men blush over the food-laden table. Barbara’s strength of character is reflected in Wade, not in her grandmother’s command of the room, but in the force of her kindness, her consideration, her complete acceptance of the individuals she meets.

“She became my biggest fan,” Wade recalls. “She just thought I had so much talent. All she’d talk about was that I just needed a chance at life. When it came to The TANK, she wanted me to grow into someone so I did have that chance . . . and use[d] my potential. I think that she understood my passion for The TANK, that it could be a very valuable experience for me.”

Wade climbed into The TANK for the first time with friends around 2005 or 2006, when musicians who would come to be known as The Friends of The TANK came to visit.

“We all went up to The TANK and crawled into the portal,” she remembers. “It was pitch black except for little candles that The TANK people were lighting.” They sang by candlelight as Wade listened. “That night it was so incredibly magical to me. It was such a unique experience, mystical even . . . compared to anything I’d ever seen in Rangely.”

That night, Wade found inspiration but not yet her voice.

Addicted at the first taste of The TANK, she couldn’t stop talking about it. Seeing her granddaughter, the “wild child,” fall in love with the experience, Don and Barbara Wade, with Lois LaFond, pause for a greeting on the way up to the Tank.

Barbara Wade never forgot to call her granddaughter when the artists came back.

One Friend of The TANK, musician Michael Stanwood, was a frequent visitor.

“He would always bring a pie or a cake or something to my grandma . . . and always be there when I’d show up, so we became friends, too,” Wade remembers. Stanwood would be the first to encourage Wade to sing, sometime after that first other-worldly visit.

“He was walking around The TANK, chanting the most amazing, ancient-sounding song I’d ever heard as he lit sage, blessing the area.” Samantha glows with the memory, her expression far off and lost.

“Okay, Samantha, sing with me,” Stanwood encouraged.

“The TANK just sang with me,” she says. “I kept going and going . . . I want[ed] to go high as I [could], and I ended up singing this super-high note that Michael Stanwood was pretty impressed by.”

When the other Friends of The TANK—Odland, Mark McCoin and Max Bernstein—returned in 2012, Stanwood asked the Friends to have Wade to sing for them.

“They recorded me that night . . . It was the coolest thing ever,” Wade recalls.

The song, titled “Sammi’s Song,” sends the listener plunging headlong into a mysterious, primal and enrapturing world (hear it at www.homeontherangely.com). She credits the men with bringing purpose and guiding lights to her world.

“Before The TANK, I really thought I had no future . . . There was no art or music . . . I was interested in in Rangely,” Wade says. “I never had a job, I never thought I would be able to function in society and I was constantly living in fear . . . When The TANK people came, it was the first time I had ever been treated like I was somebody and I had potential, that I could become something.”

For all but a select few, however, The TANK was struggling to find its voice in the windy, dry dust bowl many perceive Rangely to be. Community members had heard about The TANK, some even explored its wonders, but its value for a broader public had yet to be discovered. Over time, the enormous metal container’s exterior had become strewn with graffiti and rust, and though The TANK was structurally sound , nobody had prioritized its preservation. Since the 1960s, formal ownership had changed several times because people were reluctant to assume the attendant liability. In 1999, Stanwood came to own The TANK, but by 2012, most of the musicians who had come off and on for decades felt they had completed their creative work there.

That’s why when some businessmen approached Stanwood with a good price to buy The TANK for scrap metal, he briefly considered accepting it.

It wasn’t long after Wade’s first recording that she learned TANK musicians were considering the offer.

“I met the men out at my grandma’s who were going to scrap it. I felt the worst, saddest feeling inside me,” Wade remembers. “It felt like something sacred being destroyed . . . It weighed upon my soul. That’s when I really realized how much The TANK really, truly meant to me.”

Against all odds, Wade’s deepest wish would be granted. At his 60th birthday party, Odland, musician Lois LaFond, and others vowed to begin a journey to save The TANK and preserve it as the first public-access sound space of its kind. Over the next four years, they would coordinate and successfully grow the Friends of The TANK non-profit group, working with multiple community and county partners and supporters from all over the world to create The TANK Center for Sonic Arts.

“When I found out about Bruce Odland’s plan to launch this Kickstarter I was just so grateful,” Wade says, choking up at the memory. “I told him, ‘I will do anything to help you . . . you have to save it.’ It was an answer to my prayers. I truly believed it was going to work.” When the campaign officially launched in 2013, Wade jumped onboard.

As Odland, McCoin and Bernstein came out to launch the Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed to turn The TANK into the first-ever Center for Sonic Arts, Odland met Wade and took her through the

“Sammi climbed into The TANK, but she didn’t say a word, she just sat and listened for awhile,” Odland recalls. A smile crosses his face as he remembers the moment. “We played our stuff and . . . this voice starts to . . . sing these notes that were very ethereal. She clearly understood the proportions of The TANK, a completely original understanding of how to sing in The TANK. We didn’t really talk, we had a musical meeting with all these very deep musicians I knew for years, and she did her thing and it fit beautifully in counterpoint to all of our music.”

Odland viewed Wade as a mysterious, mystical individual who had a strong sense of identity but was clearly searching for more.

As the Kickstarter gained momentum, Wade put out fliers, told everyone about The TANK and did everything she was asked to do.

“I remember taking [the fliers] to the bar and I’m telling everybody what [The TANK] is,” Wade recalls.

“Everybody thought it was this weird joke,” while others told her the campaign would not work. She laughs at her own nonchalant reply: “Yeah, well, it will, and I’m just gonna keep doing what I’m doing.”

Wade did not realize yet how important her role would be with The TANK. While she worked tirelessly on the Kickstarter, she didn’t yet realize she was vitally important not only to the success of the campaign but also to the Friends of The TANK.

“Bruce had me come up there and had a very serious talk with me. He said, ‘You need to be here. If you say you are going to be here, we need you here.’ It was in that moment that I realized I was important here.

I didn’t know they realized I was one of their people.”

From that spark of realization, Wade committed herself to her work at The TANK. She was present to petition the county, brought reporters into The TANK to show them the wonders of sound inside, and introduced person after person to The TANK, showing the value within.

Odland, too, recalls when Wade recognized her influence on The TANK and the crew.

“I think she realized a bunch of people cared about her, saw her talent…saw that it was true,” he says.

“When you see other people reflecting care for you, reflecting a respect for your talent and potential, it’s like another light. She just took that in the most simple, open way.”

Thanks to the first successful Kickstarter campaign and, two years later, another one that opened The TANK to the world, the public life of The TANK gained luminosity as The TANK passed inspections to become a public assembly space and as, over time, Rangely citizens embraced the Friends’ vision. The Center for Sonic Arts emerged as a community resource for children to learn, while artists within Rangely and outside of it found a new outlet for creative expression and fresh inspiration through sound. Wade also grew her efforts and skills, quickly absorbing new information, befriending children and embracing their complete openness to the space, and helping those too shy at first to explore in The TANK. Now, too, Wade has learned to love herself, through a course meant to improve not only physical fitness but also focused on improving other qualities that, until now Wade has not had the skills to bring to fruition.

Over the last several years, Friend of The TANK Lois LaFond has watched, encouraged and helped mentor Wade’s growth.

“It has been an honor to be able to watch Sammi go from a quiet, shy girl to become the lovely Voice of The TANK and [its] spokesperson,” LaFond says.

LaFond, like Odland, was astounded by Wade’s ability to advocate for The TANK with little to no training in public speaking and emphasizes how Wade has become a vital part of The TANK’s growth.

Stanwood, a pivotal part of Wade’s journey, describes her evolution the best.

“We have all been in awe of Sammi’s voice and range and how it has developed,” he explains. “She must be a heroine to the Rangely community.”

Last year, The TANK began offering Open Saturdays to the community, where locals and out-of-town visitors could enter the space for themselves. Without Wade, however, many would not know how to “experience” The TANK. When a sonic pilgrim doesn’t seem ready to jump right in to sound-making, Wade will belt out notes that undulate and twist in the air, bringing to the forefront the acoustics of the space, which often incites the willingness to explore.

“I can remember the first time I sang in front of a big group of people,” Wade says. “I was shaking, my voice was shaking, my heart was pounding so hard, but once I did, it showed what The TANK could do and they would start to sing. That was so beautiful to me that it became something I wanted to do.”

Since the first Kickstarter, The TANK team continues to encourage Wade’s singing. They now rely on her to encourage newcomers to demonstrate the way the metal behemoth will “sing back.”

At one point, Odland recalled former operations coordinator Heather Zadra telling people to come listen to Wade, that she was the Voice of The TANK. It was more a confirmation of what Wade was to The TANK than an honor bestowed upon her.

Ultimately, Wade’s dedication to The TANK also encouraged the Friends of The TANK to bestow on her the role of Keeper of the Key. For decades, Barbara Wade had been the gatekeeper for those who sought entry.

If Barbara felt a person was genuine, he or she was allowed through the portal with the key. However, if Barbara felt an individual was insincere or there was a slight, real or imagined, entry was firmly and absolutely denied. It was her duty to protect The TANK, to allow or refuse entry through the portal into

“When she passed away, that key was definitely a sacred thing, but what it opened up was [also] sacred. I feel extremely connected to her [through The TANK].” Wade’s eyes shine brightly for a moment as she remembers being handed the box with the key. “I feel like . . . The TANK represents her soul. [The TANK is] so welcoming to anybody, respectful but lighthearted, joking, laughter, people not judging each other. No matter what role, no matter how famous you are, when you walk into The TANK you’re equal. That’s how my grandma saw people.”

Wade has drawn inspiration and absorbed traits from others around her in unique ways. She is currently studying sound engineering under Odland and other professionals, but she first wowed him when he learned Wade’s talent was simply instinct, without formal training to hone her skills.

“I spent a day passing on as much formal musical training as I could,” Odland says. “I was thinking, ‘Oh, man, that’s too much--how could someone get all of this at once?’”

Odland learned on a return visit his concerns were unfounded.

“When I came back two months later, with no further lessons she had assimilated all of that stuff and put it into her system,” he says. “She was able to relate to the common musical system all in one big step. I am inspired by her own way of learning. She’s an original.”

Wade admires Odland both as a mentor and someone who has helped her pursue her aspirations. At first, she saw Odland as an impossible role model to follow; it wasn’t until she discovered he had gone through some of the same struggles communicating that Wade regarded him as a mentor.

“The way he would speak to me before I could really understand the world, understand myself, or understand anything, he would explain things in a way I completely understood,” she says. “For this big, important sound engineer to tell me that my voice has a lot of potential, that I have a lot of potential, it made me see myself differently. That is so huge, because that perspective is who I am now.”

Now, as Wade’s role with The TANK evolves, Odland encourages her to grow through her interactions with hesitant newcomers on Open Saturdays. Now, as I’m going to be training in sound engineering, I see him as the most valuable mentor I could ever have.

There’s no one else in this field I would want to learn from,” Wade says. As she increasingly realizes her dream occupation, she will be enabled to help others reach their dreams.

THE TANK and recording equipment in The TANK’s recording studio. Within the space is a small area dedicated to helping the sound engineers record the music within The TANK. Weeks of training and practice have given Wade the confidence to work with the sound equipment. The updated system uses Pro Tools on a Mac computer on site. In the last couple of weeks, sound engineers have added foam and fiber pieces shaped like sound waves to “confuse” the waves so they don’t all move in the same direction and black vinyl hung about the room to absorb certain sound waves, ensuring clear recordings.

by Boulder, CO accapella group Sound Circle, a full week of Summer Solstice events headlined by Grammy winning vocal enseble Roomful of Teeth, followed by visiting harpest Christina Ivanna who performed in the park and took part in a program to honor the elders. The team and volunteers look forward to wrapping up the summer with a participatory event to honor vetrans for their services through a peaceful sound experience as well as a full weekend of activities during Rangely’s annual Septemberfest weekend over Labor Day. As the TANK’s capabilities evolve, so does Wade.

The equipment expands and increases new methods of expression.

“I feel that as my skills progress, I can use them creatively and capture in-depth the expression that each artist is hoping to create in The TANK as well as the music I hope to create of my own,” Wade concludes.

“An acoustical Marvel,” that’s what they say, and folks are now coming from far, far away.

To explore the water tank up on the hill.

“A sense altering experience,” a unique kind of thrill.

But if that tank could talk, what a tale it could spin, of hopes that were dashed again and again.

A history of circumstance, of providence of fate, a journey of mystery, the long, lonely, wait.

A treatment tank, maybe? With an attached mixing shed?

It’s original purpose, some folks have said.

It arrived in Rangely from no one knows where.

On a truck in big pieces and bad need of repair.

The welders got busy and within a short time, the tank was together and looking just fine.

It would make a fine water tank, but then, maybe not.

The tank sold once, then again it was bought.

So for years it sat empty, the days were all long, But the tank started listening and that kept it strong.

It listened to the river, to birds flying by, to trucks on the highway and planes in the sky.

It absorbed the music of the snow on its face, and the screaming dirt bikes in their earth-ripping race.

Of rowdy young folks that sometimes stopped by, Who’d crawl in the portal to talk, laugh and cry.

The tank liked their passion, and life sounds so proud The breaking beer bottles, the clamor, the crowd.

But one day an angry teen screamed with a holler, “This useless old tank is for sale for One Dollar.”

The tank couldn’t believe the words that it heard, Its demise now was certain and completely absurd.

For more than five decades it had worked toward one goal of capturing the resonance that spoke to its soul.

The scrap yard would silence the tank’s dream to share all of the magic it had captured with care.

But, when all hope seemed lost, a young man came peeking.

Bruce, a musician, was listening and seeking.

Destiny, Devine Will, Karma, or chance That day was the start of the Serendipity Dance.

Like all things good, the progress was slow, and when it first started, how could anyone know?

That the tank would be famous, a bright shining star, and people would come from near and from far.

To listen to its sounds and echoes and wonder, of quiet, gentle whispers and soft distant thunder.

Recordings and poems, passions on fire, Nobody knew what the tank might inspire.

Kyle Stewart: Metal Worker to Metal Artist

Kyle is a local artist who grew up learning to weld from his father in the family’s business, Stewart Welding.

What began as a trade turned to love as he was inspired by the love in his own life.

“I have lived in Rangely almost my whole life. I started doing metal art on me and my wife’s first year anniversary. I didn’t want to give her a flower that would die, so I decided to build one made of metal. That was back in 2008.”

He has a passion for metalwork, and true to the origins of his first sculptural piece, he finds the most satisisfying aspect of his work is the reaction it invokes. Aside from four years of tutelage under local Julia Davis, then the high school’s art teacher, Kyle is self-taught, discovering the techniques he needs as he manifests his vision for each piece.

Kyle has won two local art competitions, has sculptures in private collections and has completed several commissions for public art and local signage, including two large-scale scuptures at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, as well as signage for Elks Park, the Library, Elizabeth Robinson Studio and the Elks Club.

In his twenties and busy with a full-time job in the family business, where he has been employed since age fifteen, while leading his church’s youth group and sculpting, Kyle looks forward to a long art career, aiming for international recognition, and to sharing his talents in other ways. “I also would like to teach others how to build metal art to help build interest and maybe one day teach a welding art class at a school,” he concludes.

Carving out the Future...

Filmshoot: Local MFA candidate films a Bake Sale

Writes Master of Fine Arts candidate Peter Forbes during production of his short film while on break in Rangely this summer: “Since I was thirteen, growing up north of Rangely, I have wanted to write and direct films. For many years, this felt like a pipe dream .... especially out in our little corner of the world. I kept dreaming, and after I graduated college in Virginia, I had the chance to start working in film, even directing some small projects back East.

I began to have another dream—I wanted to come back and film something in northwestern Colorado. At first it seemed unlikely.

We are so remote and isolated, it was hard to imagine bringing in a crew and cast to film anything. But as I began to share that dream, other people latched on to it and ran with it, building awareness and preparing the way for a film to be shot in Rangely.”

The film, Bake Sale, is about a girl who wants to help a lessfortunate family, only to discover that loving your neighbor can be harder than it looks.

He concludes, “The community support I’ve experienced has been overwhelming. Maybe this should not have been a surprise to me, because in Rangely, everyone is always on the lookout to help one another out. Neighborliness is one of the themes of Bake Sale and I hope my short film captures even an ounce of the care I’ve seen modeled by the people here.”

Peter, pictured here directing both actors and crew, has experience with neighborliness, especially as the film came together with the help of a host of locals offering help. Mother of four, pastor’s wife and MA candidate Julie Noyes headed up the community effort, soliciting support, coordinating housing and food for the actors, crew and staff for the four-day project, enlisting and organizing volunteers, and arranging donations of pictureworthy baked goods for the on-screen bake sale, which were sold off screen afterwards at a real-life bake sale to support New Eden Pregnancy Center. Though her impuse to help was fueled simply by her interest in the creative project, her efforts earned her an Executive Producer credit in the upcoming film.

After completing the project, which will be reviewed and critiqued as part of his MFA program, Peter hopes to submit the film to well-known international film festivals.

portal t CRAFTING HISTORY.... On display at the Rangely Outdoor Museum is a fantastic display of local craft tradition, collaborative art, and community, and national pride. Flossie Eddy and Barbara Wade (see pg ) initiated the creation of a collaborative quilt to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial.

From the Dec. 16 issue of The Rangely Times: “The Rangely Bi-Centennial quilt blocks are made of businesses, schools, churches and civic buildings of Rangely. Each block was made by different individuals which gives it character. The centers are authentic signatures of President Gerald Ford..... The quilt and these letters will be on permanent display in Rangely so all can enjoy Rangely as it was in 1976.” ... “the people petitioned against the raffle of this quilt as it is now a collector’sitem and belongs in Rangely and to the people of Rangely.”

to the past AUTHORING HISTORY.... Rangely has a fascinating and unique history, and as one of the last boom towns of the west, it benefits from having many present and former residents still around to tell the tales - a major inspiration for the creation of this journal!

In addition to good, old fashioned tales and memoirs of authentic western life from local characters such as LouDean (see poem, page 15,) Rangely has been blessed with authors recording its history along the way. Among them Robert Haag, a musician and retired teacher, who still lives in Rangely and is debuting the third volume in his masterwork series The Reality of Rangely at our upcoming Septemberfest over Labor Day weekend. Kathy Hurt, formerly of Rangely has written facinating books about our history, including original accounts of settlers and the Utes in the area.

Cartoonist Ken Bailey lives in Wisconson but spent an idyllic childhood in Rangely which has inspired his Mighty Energy Girl comic series, one book, set in Rangely, features our beloved sonic wonder--The TANK. Well loved locals Rod Harris and the late Norma Hood (below right) partnered up in 2009 - 2016 to co-write the popular Frank-3 Enroute action series based on Frank’s life as a police officer in Las Vegas. They quickly became fast friends in the process! Their books received a four-star rating from Clarion and the series is being considered for a TV mini-series.
