HISTORY Baker Athletics Complex, located at the northern tip of Manhattan at 218th Street and Broadway, is the primary athletics facility for Columbia outdoor sports programs, featuring Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium, Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium, Columbia Softball Field, Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, the Columbia Field Hockey Venue, The Dick Savitt Tennis Center, The Remmer and 1929 Boathouses, the Chrystie Field House and the Campbell Sports Center.

The tract of land on which the Baker Athletics Complex stands was purchased for the University on December 30, 1921 by financier George F. Baker. Then a $700,000 gift, the 26-acre area was dedicated in April, 1922 and hosted spring football practice that same year. In the fall, Columbia’s football team continued to practice uptown,but played its games at South Field on the Morningside Heights Campus. The first stadium at the site, then known as Baker Field, opened in the fall of 1923 with 15,000 seats in temporary stands. Five years later, the University built the 32,000 wooden-seat stadium that served Columbia fans for 55 years, until the spring of 1983.

The first game at Baker took place on September 29, 1923, with Columbia defeating Ursinus, 13-0. The opening game in the official stadium was played on Sept. 29, 1928 as Columbia defeated Vermont, 20-0.

Lawrence A. Wien Stadium, home to the Lions’ football and lacrosse teams, was opened on Sept. 22, 1984, and also features an outdoor, eight-lane Rekortan running track. In October 2007, the playing field at Wien Stadium was named Robert K. Kraft Field in honor of Robert Kraft ‘63CC. Baker has been upgraded several times since 2005, including state of the art surfaces for all of Columbia’s teams that compete at Baker Athletics Complex. Columbia’s baseball, field hockey, softball and soccer teams all play on sport-specific surfaces for their respective sports.

LOGO The Baker Athletics Complex logo comprimises of nine rectangular shapes stacked above one another. Each rectangular shape represents each of the nine facillities beloging to the athletics Complex. The structure of the logo is vertical in nature. The two parts of the logo can be used indiviually as well as simultaneously, as seen on right.

The type “Baker Athletics” will always be flushed left and right. The font that must be used for the name of the complex must always be District Pro Thin, no exceptions. When used together with the symbol, the type must always be below.

The individual logo of each facility will be a horizontal format. This is to reflect back to the original rectangular shape that can be found in the Baker Athletics logo. For more informationon on each facilities’ logo, please check the branding guidline for each independent facility.

The minimum safe zone for the logo is determined by taking the “T” and using that as a guide for the minimum distance allowed. The distance between the symbol and the text is also set by the “T”.

LOGO VARIATIONS The Baker Athletics Complex logo can be used in combination with each of the nine facilities. To see how this is applied please check out each of the facility’s branding guidelines.

The Baker Athletics Complex logo can be changed to be an all white or all black logo depending on the environment it is in or the backgorund it is on. A black or white logo should only be used if the background is busy or if it is too close to the logo color, Pantone 290 and Pantone 286.

COLOR The color used for Baker Athletic Complex originates from the colors specified originally in the Columbia Branding Guidelines. The official Columbia color is Columbia Blue, or Pantone 290.

TYPEFACE The typeface District Pro Thin has been selected to represent Baker Athletics Complex and all its affiliates. It can be seen used within the logo.
