HELLO,
my first true interest, art became a way I was able to express my talents through colors, shapes, and designs. I used art as a guide towards my career in architecture and design. Throughout my time in an academic setting and professional setting, I was able to blend my love for art into the practical application of architecture and interior design. I have a dedicated and strong desire to contribute in a design support function utilizing my experience, education, and interests. Get to Know Me. Lona.

A residential apartment complex that prioritizes and explores the functionality, design customization, and a minimalist and modern impression of a space. The architectural design is used to showcase art and certain color palettes that match the architecture, art district, and culture of the surrounding area.

The design layout was inspired by building block being able to push and pull a group of blocks into a variety of combinations.

I began with separately designing a kitchen, dining, living area, primary bedroom, guest bedroom, and bathroom.

I then took these “blocks” of spaces and arranged them into different layouts to create apartments. Each apartment is different, yet arranged from the same set of drawings.

9.

After choosing the site and researching the climate of Santa Fe and the surrounding architecture I chose to design a complex where each apartment is accessed from outside from the center of the building. This creates a more open design feel. The first floor includes the lobby, gallery for local artists to display their work, two open retail spaces, a gym, and apartments. The apartment complex is meant to be a more social space as used by locals by including those public spaces.

The second floor is only apartments with a 2,000 square foot average. Each apartment is accessed from outside the complex and features a balcony for outdoor seating. Featuring an open floor plan, the apartments have minimal walls and maximum sunlight. This allows for a variety of combinations for the interior space to be arranged and designed.

Coffee Table.

I was tasked with creating a furniture piece designed for a specific need or want that explored materials, joinery, and machinery. This coffee table consists of wood, acrylic, and a variety of joinery to assemble into one piece without gaps. I challenged the boundaries of a typical vertical and horizontal assembly of a table by designing diagonal and angled pieces that each fit together seamlessly.

Problem.

Design.

The need for a piece of furniture to store books and magazines that would fit in a confined bedroom space. The proposed problem solved would help to add extra storage as well as display an array of architectural books and magazines and act as a bedside table top.

Solution.

The design of this piece of furniture was inspired by the need for an object to store books and magazines that would fit in a confined bedroom space. The final design is a coffee table with a symmetrical base an acrylic top. The angled, dark stained wooden base pieces compliment my bedroom furniture, flooring, and windows adding to the simple aesthetic of the space. The angled pieces act as shelves for books or magazines to be placed on. The acrylic top is a way for viewers to look down onto the design to see coffee table books like a glass table would allow for. The joinery is angled and notched together to make the piece look seamless and sleek.

To create a low table top, coffee table-like piece of furniture that can rest at the foot of a bed or beside a bed with shelves to hold books and magazines that match the simple aesthetic of the room’s already existing furniture and layout.

Studio D.

Built in 1908, Marvin Hall, the Architecture and Design building at KU, holds true to its original design while also developing through the years to cater to students and faculty needs. As technology is changing and developing at a rapid speed, spaces and technological needs for designers need to change as well. As part of a group project, we redesigned three existing traditional studio spaces to grow with the new technology and collaboration opportunities architecture and design has to offer.
