Operable vents allows wind to push air up into the double skin facade cavity. The pressure creates a vacuum causing movement of air in the interior.

The created cross ventilation will cool down the building and create a nice breeze for the summer heat. The air is funnelled through the top of the facade.

DOUBLE SKIN FACADE

The vents close in the winter months to optimize on heat capture. The winter sun radiation will collect in the cavity of the facade. The cavity then acts as an insulating shell for the interior of the building mitigating the energy needed to meet thermal comfort demands in the building.

6. EVERYDAY UTOPIA This research and design process involves a collaborative approach that engages the community, organizational representatives and researchers within the devleoping nation of Haiti. Here everyday infrastructural issues of access to water, a reliant energy source and a waste management system are addressed in a “Live, Work, Learn� approach to housing, farming, and working programs

Haiti has been the subject of political unrest, violence and disorganized government since the days of its founding, which has left the country without a reliable infrastructure system. In a country that is debilitated by the absence of clean, potable water, widespread access to electricity, and an organized system of waste management, there is a need for a masterplan, that addresses the everyday needs of the Haitian population. These issues are only exacerbated by natural disasters and the recovery efforts are often misaligned and too slow. By integrating all three of these sectors in a way that will provide a “living, working, learning utopia” that provides a reliable system of clean water, clean energy, and a clean waste system this framework can be replicated not only in Arcahaie but in regions beyond.
