SOn Saturday, February 10th at Livonia Franklin High School, more than 145 Pioneer Band students performed a solo and/or an ensemble for a certified adjudicator, (along with family and friends) for this state-qualifying event. Each student’s performance was evaluated for Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique, and Interpretation. After their performance, every participant was awarded a rating between "I" (Excellent) and "V" (Unsatisfactory). It was a wonderful day to be a Pioneer! Our student performances exceeded all expectations! At the end of the event, a whopping 97.2% of our performing events received a rating of "I" or "II"!
Congratulations to the Pioneer Band students who participated in the festival!

ROBERT ALBRITTON SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship endowment fund established in 2002 honors the career of Robert Albritton as director of bands at Pioneer High School, from 1982 to 2002. This merit-based scholarship is intended to enrich both the recipient and the Pioneer Band program at large. The award is to be used for a recognized band program outside the PHS program (e.g., Blue Lake, Interlochen, Tanglewood, New England Music Camp, Aspen) The recipient’s record clearly shows that he or she regularly participates in band performance, as well as social and fundraising activities; demonstrates a desire to improve as a musician and contribute to ensemble performance; and will be continuing in the Pioneer Bands program for at least one school year following the program experience.
NANCY WARING AWARD
i o n e e r B a n
The Nancy Waring Award honors the 24-year career of Nancy Waring as associate director of bands at Pioneer High School, from 1992 to 2017. This need-based scholarship is intended for any current band student, grades 9–12, with a preference for a student who started in Varsity Band the band and students with whom Ms. Waring worked closely. The award is to be used for a recognized musical enrichment opportunity outside the PHS program (e g , Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Blue Lake International, Interlochen Arts Camp, MPulse, music lessons). The student’s record should clearly show that they regularly participate in band performance, as well as social and fundraising activities; demonstrate a desire to improve as a musician and contribute to ensemble performance; and intend to continue to play their instrument in an established ensemble
JOEL BRAHCE AWARD
The Joel Brahce Award is in memory of Dr. Joel Brahce, a 1976 Pioneer High School graduate, who played tuba, was a drum major candidate, and soloed at Interlochen. To honor his lifelong passion for music, this merit-based scholarship is intended for any current band student, grades 9–11 to assist the student to attend Pioneer Band Camp.
ROBERT ALBRITTON LEADERSHIP IN MUSIC AWARD
Robert Albritton was the director of the Pioneer Bands for twenty years (1982–2002). During those years, he went above and beyond the expectations of a band director. Robert Albritton consistently showed great dedication and commitment to the program and, as a result, during his tenure, the Bands were recognized on a state, national, and international level. He demanded excellence from all his band students, creating a focused and determined group.
In honor of Robert Albritton's twenty years of service to the Pioneer High School Bands, the Robert Albritton Leadership in Music Award was instituted in 2002. This award is given on a rotating basis annually by the Pioneer Music Department to a senior music student in the Pioneer bands, orchestras, or choirs. This student will have demonstrated the qualities exemplified by Robert Albritton: dedication, commitment, hard work, and excellence in the Pioneer music program. In 2024, the award goes to a Pioneer band student.

THE DIRECTOR’S AWARD
This award honors an outstanding member of our Varsity Band or Concert Band White, the foundations of our award-winning band program. The director of Varsity Band and Concert Band White specifically chooses the student who receives this award. This student has continuously gone above and beyond the normal classroom expectations, someone who leads by example and enriches the foundation of our band program.
WOODY HERMAN JAZZ AWARD
The Woody Herman Award honors a jazz student for outstanding contributions to the Pioneer Jazz program. Woody Herman (1913–87), was a jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, singer, and Big Band leader, forming the Woody Herman Orchestra in 1936 His lively, swinging arrangements combining bop themes with swing rhythm parts were greatly admired; Igor Stravinsky wrote “Ebony Concerto” for his band.
LOUIS ARMSTRONG AWARD
The Louis Armstrong Award is presented to the most outstanding Pioneer jazz band member Louis Armstrong (1901–71), known around the world as Satchmo, was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz a uniquely American art form. His influence as an artist and cultural icon is very much alive today. During his career, Louis Armstrong developed a way of playing jazz as an instrumentalist and vocalist which has had an impact on all musicians to follow. He recorded hit songs for five decades; composed dozens of songs that have become jazz standards; and performed an average of 300 concerts each year, with his frequent tours to all parts of the world earning him the nickname “Ambassador Satch.”
PATRICK S. GILMORE AWARD
The Patrick S. Gilmore Award was introduced in 1994 in honor of the legendary bandmaster and impresario Patrick Gilmore (1829-1892) and his band joined General Burnside’s expedition to North Carolina in the Civil War. Gilmore also played for every president of his day, including Abraham Lincoln. This beautiful award honors outstanding high school band students and their achievements and commitment to the band. It may be used as a runner-up award to the John Philip Sousa Award®.
JOHN PHILIP SOUSA AWARD
The John Philip Sousa Award honors our most deserving band member. The Sousa Award recognizes superior musicianship, leadership, dependability, loyalty, and cooperation the qualities directors strive to develop in all students. John Philip Sousa (1854–1932) was the longtime director of the President’s Own Marine Band and a prolific composer and arranger. He championed the cause of music education, received several honorary degrees, and fought for composers’ rights.
SCHOLAR INSTRUMENTALIST AWARD
The award is given in recognition of young musicians whose achievements are both academic and musical Each member school may nominate one scholar musician per year in orchestra and band, making this a very outstanding accomplishment.
