For 14 years, Jacob & Steven, the infamous "Halloween Boyz," have summoned spirits and sent shivers down the spines of their neighbors with an event that’s now a local legend Last year, nearly 800 little terrors dared to enter their haunted world, drawn to the eerie spectacle that grows darker and more thrilling each year.
In the days leading up to Hall ransforms into a sinister landscape, where the boundary between ead blurs. But there’s more to this night of fright than meets the eye. Beneath the cobwebs and flickering jack-o'-lanterns lies a cause dear to their hearts raising funds for The Youth Project of Halifax. Over the years, they’ve raised more than $5,000, and their love of Halloween has turned into a force for good.
But pulling off such a nightmarish event takes more than just ghosts and ghouls it takes a dedicated team of around 20 volunteers, all working together to bring the haunted vision to life. Donations of supplies or funds are always welcomed to make each year the most terrifying yet. Want to contribute? You can donate directly through their Amazon wishlist here: https://shorturl at/b8GJA
"From the day we moved here, Steven wanted our home to be the Halloween destination," Jacob shares. "Seeing our community come together, not just for the scares but for something meaningful, is humbling We couldn’t do this without everyone’s support "
A H ll night approaches, prepare yourself for a chilling experience where reality fa supernatural takes over because this year, the Halloween Boyz, their te teers, and the spirits they summon are ready to haunt the night once a

HOW TO PLAN A TAX-EFFICIENT RETIREMENT WITHDRAWAL STRATEGY
When it’s time to retire, many Canadians have several sources of income As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, I look at all potential sources of retirement income to come up with the most tax-efficient retirement withdrawal strategies and a long-term plan, which sources you should draw from first to help minimize taxes
Withdrawing the right retirement income at the right time could help save you thousands
Starting retirement can be a challenging one for many. You suddenly have to change your mindset from making money and saving, to drawing from your savings to provide income Many retirees have several sources of income in retirement, but often don’t realize that the sequence of withdrawals which sources you withdraw from first can have major tax implications
It’s important to be aware of your potential tax rate in retirement One of the key retirement withdrawal strategies is to maintain a consistent income level, in the lowest tax bracket possible This involves juggling your income from taxable and non-taxable sources so as to avoid going from one extreme to the other (where you might pay zero tax one year and a high rate of tax in another).
The time when many Canadians could rely on just their company and government pension for retirement income is long gone Retirees often have several sources of income now, which can be fully taxable, partially taxable (such as capital gains) or tax free Sources could include CPP, OAS, RRSPs, TFSAs, Non-registered, Company Pensions, Cash in accounts and more.
One RRSP/RRIF withdrawal strategy can be to maximize withdrawals from them early on in your retirement, especially if you intend to delay taking CPP and OAS This will have the added benefit of reducing your overall RRIF amount, which will reduce the taxable minimum withdrawal amount. Delaying drawing from your RRSP/RRIF until the last moment usually isn’t advisable This sudden jump in taxable income can bring you into a higher tax bracket, whereas blending it in with other sources of income can keep your total income consistently in a lower tax bracket
Another RRIF withdrawal strategy, if you don’t need all of your RRIF income in the early years, is to put that excess cash into a TFSA to provide you with more tax-free income growth and withdrawals in the future If you have a spouse, you can also put the excess money into their TFSA Once you start drawing from OAS, you’ll also income under the OAS limit, otherwise it will start to b
Another consideration is pension splitting with your sp share up to 50% of your pension income with them; this they are in a lower tax bracket This will mean that you tax but could reduce OAS clawback
The Sambro Sou'Wester Days once again affirmed its place as a cherished community event With an impressive turnout and a vibrant atmosphere, the festival proved to be an undeniable success, showcasing the spirit and togetherness that define Sambro and its surrounding areas
Although the festival weekend started with a few weather challenges, the unpredictable skies eventually gave way to sunshine, setting the stage for a memorable conclusion to the festivities.
At the heart of the event’s success were the members of the Sambro and Area Community Association (SACA), who, alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, worked tirelessly to bring the festival to life Their commitment to preserving this beloved tradition was evident in every aspect of the event, from the meticulously organized activities to the welcoming atmosphere.
Every year nominations from the community are received for folks who go above and beyond to make their community a better place to live, work and play, and who contribute to Sambro's culture This years Sambro Spirit Award Recipients were: Aronda Garrison, Theresa Kirk Gray, Jill Hann, and Susan Feltmate
Gratitude is extended to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants who contributed to making this year ’ s festival exceptional Whether cheering for a team, participating in the lively parade, or enjoying the musical performances, the festival was a testament to the power of community engagement and support.
As the final notes of the festival faded, one thing was clear: the S cornerstone celebration
President Chuck Martin and the Executive of the Earl Francis Memorial Spryfield Legion invite the community to attend the Annual Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony on November 11, 2024.
The Remembrance Day Parade will form up at the Spryfield Shoppers Drug Mart on Herring Cove Road at 10:45 am and will March to the Cenotaph at the Spryfield Legion where the Ceremony will take place
A reception will follow with hotdogs and treats for the children with a D.J. performing for Veteran’s and the Community from 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
SPRYFIELD LIONS RINK
The Spryfield Lions’ Rink began as a vision in 1969, when the Spryf Lions Club proposed building an arena Frank “Wee” Martin was ma Chair of the committee and oversaw the construction There is a sto Mr. Martin. The rink was renamed after Frank in 1997; however, w work to outline the footprint, began in March of ’72, with the sod turn
As with any community facility, funding is necessary A lot of funding from the province, and we had walk-a-thons to help with fundraising Spryfield who didn’t participate in one way or another This 20-mile walk (actually 17 4 miles, but whos counting) started at the former MT&T building on Joseph Howe Drive, (with Yvan Cournoyer signing autographs) up Herring Cove Road to Old Sambro, then down Sussex to Williams Lake Road and then around Purcell’s Cove Road through Herring Cove to Drysdale Road.
Here is a fact most do not know Several Lions’ Club members (my dad, Doug Adams included), put their family homes up as collateral for the rink You have no idea how glad I am our rink was successful.
The Rink officially opened on November 27th 1972 Have a look at this timeline 8 months from the sod turning to the official opening That is impressive At the time, we didn’t have a tractor to clean the ice So, at the end of a game, we would jump over the boards with shovels and clean the ice. It was no different than shovelling a driveway We used 45-gallon barrels mounted on wheels to flood the ice
In the summer, The Lions’ Club started their well-known bingo.I recall my dad and Clyde Chambers in our kitchen planning the bingo, with their inaugural Sunday night games approaching quickly. Understandably they were nervous, as this was new to them After the first night, the nervousness quickly subsided What a success!
In 1979, the gym was built, which offered more space for bingos.Thursday nights were also added. The funding from the bingo alone ensured the rink was well-maintained and their community outreach and supporting events were second-to-none amongst other clubs in Atlantic Canada In 2009 HRM assumed ownership of the rink and recreation centre from the Lions Club. The Spryfield Lions Rink and Recreation Society (SLRRS) was created at that time to oversee the daily operations of the facility and is comprised of volunteers from the community To this day, our board remains in place
Our rink had several well-known local hockey players and officials skate on our ice. John Chabot, Ryan Flinn, Shane Bowers, Tim Cranston, and Don Koharski to name a few
Many changes have occurred over the years The 45-gallon barrels were replaced with a Massey Ferguson tractor, and this was replaced with a propane powered Zamboni. A new tractor shed was built The dressing rooms now have showers, and a female dressing room was built Our beloved rink is nearing the end of its life It has served our community and others well We all have fond memories, which will be cherished forever And now, let the planning begin for our new arena
HRM Council requested that a Steering Committee be formed to gather input from residents from all backgrounds, cultures and socioeconomic status Given that a new rink is planned, input from the hockey, ringette and lacrosse communities was expected However, the committee wanted to ensure that those who didn’t partake in ‘traditional’ rink activities were asked for input. Another opportunity for input will be coming soon

BEAVER ENVIRO-DEPOT CELEBRATING 45 YEARS DOING BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY
moving to various other locations, including a time at the Spryfield Mall, Wyatt finally purchased the current location at 251 Herring Cove Road.
In 1996 the Provincial Government created the province wide Enviro Depot Recycling program. That’s when Wyatt changed the name to Beaver Enviro because people received a nickel for each bottle returned and a nickel had a Beaver on one side. He also created the slogan, “It’s your nickel, come and get it!”. That’s when a provincial environmental magazine was created called “The Enviro Connect”, distributed throughout schools in Nova Scotia. Wyatt ran full back page colouring contest asking children to name the beaver in his logo. The winner was an elementary school student who named his beaver “Benton”, meaning helper of little people, and went on to explain that “Benton the Beaver was helping young people understand the importance of recycling and waste management.”
Over the years Wyatt always made sure he supported the community saying, “I firmly believe Spryfield is a strong community because the business community makes sure it gives back and supports the local schools and non-profit groups.” Wyatt often speaks at schools and community groups about the importance of waste management and serves on numerous organizations including the Spryfield Business Commission Vice Chair and is currently the First Vice-Chair of the Eastern Recyclers Association.
, Originally called Spryfield Bottle Exchange, Wyatt Redmond has been accepting people’s recyclables for over 45 years, right here in Spryfield. Starting on September 6, 1979, where the YWCA is now and subsequently
Wyatt has received numerous awards for educating and promoting the importance of waste management in Nova Scotia.
Wyatt’s roots run deep in Spryfield. His parents, grandparents, and great grand-parents all lived in Spryfield, along with numerous other family members. Wyatt raised his children in Spryfield, and it is safe to say that Wyatt is a Spryfield Proud “True Spryfielder!”
We congratulate Wyatt and wish him many more years of success!

With an affordable housing market, vibrant community life, and an abundance of natural beauty, Spryfield is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Natural Wonders: One of Spryfield’s most attractive features is its proximity to breathtaking outdoor spaces. Long Lake Provincial Park offers over 2,000 hectares of forest, lakes, and hiking trails. Whether you're into kayaking, bird watching, or simply taking a peaceful stroll, the park offers something for everyone. Another local gem is the McIntosh Run Trail System, where adventurers can enjoy peaceful hiking and challenging mountain biking.

The Spryfield Farmers Market: Fresh and Local: A cornerstone of the community is the Spryfield Farmers Market, where local vendors showcase fresh produce, homemade crafts, and artisan products. Held seasonly on Sundays from noon to 3pm, the market is a gathering spot for residents to support local businesses, connect with neighbors, and enjoy a vibrant community spirit.
Fabulous Hidden Gems: If you’re looking to stay active, Spryfield also boasts multiple boutique style gyms to get active. This affordability, combined with its location near downtown Halifax, gives Spryfield a unique edge as a hidden gem in the real estate market.
One of Spryfield’s defining qualities is its strong sense of community. The neighborhood is known for its friendly, tight-knit atmosphere, where residents look out for one another. Local events, like community cleanups, festivals, and holiday gatherings, create a sense of belonging and pride. The area’s culturally diverse population brings together people from different backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment.
