President Trump Is Wrong

Established in 1960

By: Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Congresswoman Johnson

President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to secure funding for a wall on our nation’s Southern border is without merit, and could lead to a Constitutional crisis. Members of his own party have joined Democrats and the majority of the American people in their belief that the president’s action is not in the best interests of our country. Even the president himself suggested that he was on the wrong track when he stated FEBRUARY

“I didn’t need to do this” during a press conference in the Rose Garden when he announced his intention. Court challenges have already been filed after the president said that his administration would use funds that Congress had appropriated for other purposes. President Trump took this action after Congress passed a spending bill that did not include the money that he had requested to construct the wall that he promised his supporters during the presidential campaign. Now, he simply does not want to appear weak to his base, even though a Fox News poll found that a majority of its respondents opposed his action. The president and his advisors need to revisit our Constitution FEBRUARY Minister of the Month

and read it provisions on separation of powers. They also need to develop a greater appreciation for the congressional budget process. One Republican Senator, Susan Collins of Maine, said that the president’s action undermined the appropriations process, and the will of Congress. In addition to facing court battles, the president will be opposed by Democrats in the House of Representatives whose majority is against his state of emergency declaration. It remains to be seen what the Republican controlled Senate will do even though some of its Republican members, like Senator Collins, are uncomfortable with the president’s overreach. Little Known Black History Fact: Smokey Robinson Special to Elite News

Smokey Robinson began his career in the ‘50s while in high school, later becoming a part of one of Motown Record’s first recording acts. Today is the talented singer, songwriter, and producer’s birthday. William Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit, Mich. His first group, then known as the Matadors, began making noise around Detroit and a chance meeting with record producer Berry Gordy Jr. would change their lives forever. Changing the group’s name to the Miracles, Robinson and Gordy would embark a prolific hit-making journey that dominated the ‘60s. Chief in the success of the Miracles was the songwriting talent of Robinson, which Gordy relied on early to great

benefit. His impressive credits include writing or co-writing over 4,000 songs, and 37 Top

Miracles, and hits for Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Mary Wells, and several others. In 1972, Robinson went solo and also began serving as the Vice President of Motown Records. As the ‘80s rolled around, Robinson famously battled drug addiction overcoming his issues by way of his faith. In 1988, he won his first Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the song “Just To See Her” and went on to win the Grammy Legend and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 and 1999 respectively. He is also Smokey Robinson part of the 1987 inductee class 40 hit songs. Some of these of the Rock and Roll Hall of tracks include the likes of “Shop Fame to go along with countless Around” and “You’ve Really honors and awards. Got A Hold On Me” with the

President Trump Is Wrong By: Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The president argues that problems at the border that we share with Mexico constitute a national emergency. That is simply not the case. The number of people taken into custody in recent years attempting to enter our country illegally has actually decreased. According to the government’s own figures approximately 400,000 people were taken into custody in 2018 at the Southern border after they attempted to enter into the country illegally. That is down from 1.6 million

that were apprehended in 2000. Even the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, counseled President Trump against declaring a state of emergency, but was rebuffed by a chief executive who has created a crisis for himself that many believe will further damage his presidency. Five years ago president Trump, responding to an executive action by President Obama, wrote “Republicans must not allow President Obama to subvert the Constitution for

his own benefit because he is unable to negotiate with Congress.” Perhaps the president should revisit the words that he wrote five years ago. They have now come back to haunt him! *Congresswoman Johnson represents the 30th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives. She also chairs the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

Health And Wellness What’s the Best Soap for Eczema?

Health Line - Finding a soap or cleanser that works for you has a number of challenges, including: Skin changes. The effectiveness of the product can change as the condition of your skin changes. Product changes. It’s not unusual for a manufacturer to periodically change product formulations. While some recommendations may not work for you, it’s still a sound idea to tap into the vast knowledge of your doctor, dermatologist and pharmacist for suggestions and detailed information. What to look for on the label Some of the things to look for include: Allergens. Make sure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients. pH. Look for pH balanced formulas. Generally stay away from alkaline soaps. They can impair skin barrier function by increasing the skin’s pH. Harsh cleansers and detergents. Look for mild, gentle cleansers that don’t damage the skin’s natural moisturizing factors. Deodorant. Avoid deodorant soaps, they typically have added scents that can irritate sensitive skin. Fragrance. Look for fragrance-free or scentfree soaps. Fragrance can be an allergen. Dye. Look for dye-free soaps. Dye can be an allergen. Third party endorsement. Look for endorsements from organizations such as The National Eczema Association (NEA) Seal of Acceptance. The NEA evaluates and recognizes products that are suitable for care of eczema or sensitive-skin. Industrial. Avoid industrial cleansers, they commonly contain strong or abrasive ingredients, such as petroleum distillates or pumice, which are very rough on skin.

4 Elite News February 22, 2019 History of Elite News and William”Bill” Blair Jr. William “Bill” Blair was born on October 17, 1921 in Dallas Texas. He attended B.F. Durrell Elementary School and in 1939 graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. After graduation Bill served in the US Army. In 1946 Bill began pitching for the Indianapolis Clowns, one of 12 Negro League Baseball teams. The team spawned greats as Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. In 1949 still while playing in the Negro Leagues Bill established his first publication the Southwest Newspaper. This newspaper published scores from African America college games across the United States and was circulated to all major black colleges throughout the country. In 1951 after suffering an injury to his pitching arm Bill left baseball but continued publishing the Southwest Newspaper. Even though Bill loved sports he recognized the need for black churches to have a voice in the city of Dallas.

As Political, Educational and Economic unrest led to the Civil Rights Movement and race riots grew Bill decided that the blacks needed a sound media voice to “Tell It Like It Is.” As a result, in 1960 the Southwest Newspaper became The Elite News and the

many face-lifts, but it remains “The Official Voice of the Church and Community.” In 1996 Jordon Blair took over as the publisher of Elite News and remembering his father’s words: “The spoken words are like air, but the printed word is always there” Jordan took the dreams of his father to the next level. Standing on a solid foundation of proven success Jordan continued the paper until his death February 17, 2012.

Cunningham’s death, the sheriff ’s office reported. It’s not clear if Johnson, scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Tuesday, has an attorney.

Aurora Public Schools released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn that one of our assistant principals, Anthony (TJ) Cunningham passed away.” The statement also said counselors would be available at Hinkley High School throughout the week.
