Historical marker approved for New Hope Baptist Church on Juneteenth weekend

ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (June 20, 2022) The Rockwall County Historical Commission is excited to announce that the Texas Historical Commission has approved an application by the RCHC for an Official Texas Historical Marker for New Hope Baptist Church, in Royse City, TX. The official Historical Marker will be installed at a later date.

New Hope Baptist Church was formed in 1859, prior to the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation, and has continuously served its community since then. From the time of its formation, the Church’s membership has primarily been composed of African-Americans, which gives the approval of the Historical Marker on this Juneteenth Weekend special significance. The historical importance of New Hope is further emphasized by the fact that it was organized prior to the existence of both Rockwall County (formed in 1873) and the City of Royse City (formed in 1885).

According to Lorne Liechty, chairman of the RCHC, “The historical significance of New Hope Baptist Church to Rockwall County can not be overstated. We have thoroughly enjoyed the process of working with Pastoar Stephen Grays and other church members to learn the heritage of New Hope Baptist Church, and are excited that the significance of this heritage has been recognized by the Texas Historical Commission.”

New Hope Baptist Church acquired its initial property at 801 Old Greenville Road in Royse City in 1868. The first building that housed the Church was a workers’ shack on the property. The Church’s first permanent building was erected in 1914. In 1953, the Church conducted a major demolition of its existing building and the construction of a new facility. A new sanctuary was erected in 1994.

New Hope has impacted its community in a positive way since its formation. Today the Church is led by the Reverend Stephen Grays, who has pastored the Church since May 18, 2016. Now, more than 160 years after the Church was formed, it continues to fulfill its mission of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Rockwall County Historical Commission is formed pursuant to the laws of the State of Texas. Its purpose includes the identification, preservation, protection and interpretation of the history of Rockwall County. Its members are Lorne Liechty, Chairman; Bethany Browning; Sarah Keeney; Paula Morris; Mark Russo; Travis Sales; and John Stacy.Submitted press release, edited for publication in Blue Ribbon News.

Help us support the American Heart Association's important mission! DALLAS — It could have been a story of catastrophe.

But, the Jones family sees a story of community.

Around 11 a.m. Monday, just before the lunch rush began, Dallas police say a stolen car crashed straight into Blackjack Pizza’s dining room.

Blackjack has been in business three and a half decades.

It sits in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, just a few blocks west of Fair Park in Dallas.

Ron Jones, a longtime cook, was in the kitchen when the crash happened.

“All the sudden I heard a boom. A car drove in the building!” he said.

He immediately ran to one of their regular customers who’d been knocked down.

Seconds later, Dallas police ran in.

Blackjack Pizza vows to rebuild and reopen. The owners will need even more community support to get there.

“Police drew the guns on them, and that’s when I disappeared,” he said.

The customer and the suspected driver of the stolen vehicle were hospitalized with what police said were minor injuries.

But Blackjack sustained major damage.

An online fundraising campaign has been set up to help the Jones family reopen Blackjack as quickly as possible.

Within just hours, the damage was being repaired by Blackjack’s loyal customers.

They tore down bricks that were precariously hanging from the walls.

They took out air conditioning ducts that were barely hanging on. They swept dust and glass.

By evening, they were shoring up and boarding up the front of the restaurant.

Owner Terry Jones, Ron’s brother, said he didn’t call anyone for help.

“They just showed up!” he said.

“They want us to reopen of course because they love our food,” he said with a laugh.

Blackjack is an institution. Some love the pizza. Others love the hamburgers. Most love the sweet iced tea.

Ron and Terry’s mother, Dorothy Jones, is a fixture at Blackjack.

Why Am I Always Tired and Have No Energy?

Medical Editor: John P. Cunha, DO, FACOEP

Causes of Fatigue and Low Energy

Feeling tired all the time is called fatigue, which is when tiredness is overwhelming and is not relieved with rest. Tiredness is able to be alleviated with rest.

There are numerous causes for fatigue and low energy, including:

• Iron deficiency anemia, which can be caused by - Heavy menstrual periods - Ulcers - Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anemia • Iron-overload disorder (haemochromatosis) (rare) • Chronic fatigue syndrome • Sleep problems -Sleep apnea, a condition in which people stop breathing for short periods

during

sleep -Restless legs syndrome -Lack of sleep -Other sleep disorders • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) • Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system responds abnormally to a protein called gluten • Diabetes • Depression • Anxiety • Infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) • Rheumatoid arthritis • Cancer -Fatigue may be from cancer itself or from the treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation • Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, pain relievers, and medicines for nausea • Recovering from major surgery • Infections • Heart disease • Kidney disease • Liver disease • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • Untreated pain • Fibromyalgia • Emotional stresses, including grief, financial or personal stresses • Boredom • Lifestyle habits -Staying up too late -Consuming too much caffeine -Drinking too much alcohol -Eating junk food -Sedentary lifestyle -Exercising too much

If you’ve been tired with low energy for several weeks and sleep does not alleviate the symptoms, talk to your doctor. Treatment for fatigue and low energy depends on the cause.

The 82-year-old works most every day, but she was not there when the crash happened.

She hurried to the hospital to see the customer who’d been rushed there.

When she arrived back at her restaurant, more customers flocked in with hugs and help.

“It’s a blessing,” Dorothy said. “Everybody came to our rescue!”

Just one week before the crash, a man who helped found the restaurant in the 1990’s but was no longer affiliated with it passed away.

The Jones family promises to rebuild and reopen. “All of my customers are my family. I tell them I love them,” she said. “They all call you mom,” Terry told her.

“I’m everybody’s mom, and I love it,” she said.
