Busiest year ever for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) attended a total of 1,491 patients in 2018, making it the busiest year ever for the Charity’s Critical Care Teams.

T

he figure is an increase of 2% on 2017 with 1,461 patients and a rise of 38% on the 2016 total of 1,077.

EHAAT’s helicopters and Rapid Response Vehicles were dispatched on a total of 2,241 occasions last year.

Of these 1,852 (83%) were for incidents in Essex and Hertfordshire. The remainder were to attend patients in Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Greater London and Kent to provide support when the local air ambulances were already committed.

Medical incidents accounted for 39% of the total, followed by road traffic collisions (24%) and accidental injuries (15%). The

remaining 22% included a mix of cases such as assaults and sports/leisure accidents.

The busiest part of the year came in May, June and July, with more than 200 missions each month.

During 2018 over 300 missions took place on a Saturday, making it the busiest day of the week.

Stuart Elms, Clinical Director at EHAAT, commented: “The need for the Charity’s life-saving service is as strong now as it was twenty years ago when our first helicopter, covering just Essex, took to the air with two Paramedics in 1998.

“We now operate Critical Care Teams consisting of

Stuart Elms, Clinical Director a Pre-hospital Care Doctor and Critical Care Paramedic and have two state-of-theart helicopters covering the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire. They are backed up by Rapid Response Vehicles after sunset and in poor weather.

“With the help of our supporters across Essex and Hertfordshire we will continue to develop our service to give the best critical care we can to the critically ill and seriously injured patients that we attend.”

Gruelling double challenge for daring Danielle A

SELF-CONFESSED run-aphobe has left her doubts in the dust to win a charity’s only place at this year’s London Marathon.

The gruelling event is not the only challenge Danielle Smith, 26, has set herself for 2019.

Danielle, who grew up in Harwich and went to Colchester County High School for Girls, will also be climbing Kilimanjaro to raise thousands of pounds for the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation.

Danielle, who is running four times a week with an added swim session, said: “For a long time, I have wanted to take on some kind of physical challenge to support the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation.

“I went to school with Tom’s sister, Emma, and met Tom on a number of occasions and I have long followed and admired the incredible work the Foundation has done in Tom’s name.

“However, despite wanting to take on a challenge, I didn’t know where to start.

“Up until a year or so ago, I was by no means a runner.

In fact, I hated running.

“But at some point at the end of 2017 something

clicked, and I decided to try the Couch to 5K challenge.

“From someone who couldn’t run more than a minute or two at the start, the running bug bit me, and by September 2018 I had successfully completed my first half marathon.

“It was then I looked to my next challenge. And that’s when I saw The Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation had been awarded a single charity place in the 2019 Virgin London Marathon.”

Fearing simply applying for the London Marathon wouldn’t be enough to win the coveted spot, Danielle also committed to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the Foundation too.

She said: “I have long wanted to climb Kilimanjaro and doing so wearing Tom’s name on my t-shirt is something that will give me immense pride.

“These are two great undertakings, and my year is going to be full of long runs and steep climbs but knowing I am doing so in order to raise money for such an important cause makes those challenges that little bit easier.”

Danielle is following a 16 week training plan but once the marathon is completed she will be switching to long walks and hill climbs to get ready for her next challenge.

Nikki Bowdidge, CEO and founder of the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, said: “Danielle has long been a friend and we are thrilled she has decided to do not one but two daring fundraisers for the Foundation.

“She truly is an inspiration and we cannot wait to cheer her on.”

Get ready for Helen Rollason Join the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity for our Rural Ramble at The Forgotten Gardens of Easton Lodge on Saturday 13th April. Last year, we welcomed over three hundred supporters who joined the charity for our very first Rural Ramble raising over £5,000!

T

he gardens which are entirely maintained by volunteers, comprise of a walled kitchen garden dating back to the 18th century, a wild flowers area for the bees, formal gardens, beautiful carpets and expansive colourful displays

of flowers in Spring and Summer.

Three options

There are three distance options for participants to choose from; 10 mile walk and garden visit, 4 mile walk and garden visit or a 1 mile walk family trail and garden visit – dogs on leads are welcome.

As part of the visit a delicious cream tea is included with each ticket.

Situated a few minutes outside the historic market town of Great Dunmow, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy a beautiful walk around the surrounding countryside and The Forgotten Gardens of Easton Lodge.

Last year, participants were full of praise for the event;

“I would just like to say thank you for organising a great first Rural Ramble.

My husband, two children, two dogs and I completed the 10 mile ramble today.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, the organisation,

the route and the tea afterwards were all excellent and for the first time in a long time the weather was on everyone’s side!”

Their history spans from the mid-1590s, through the Edwardian era and Second World War, right up to the current time, when important and exciting renovation is taking place.”

hese well-intentioned targets may include playing more, joining a club, cutting your handicap or improving your swing, but how many have decided to invest in some custom-fitted clubs?

Keen to dispel common misconceptions associated with custom fitting, Randall Daniels, Retail Manager at the Golf Shop at Stoke

by Nayland and a certified Custom Fitter, explains: “A lot of people think custom fitting is too expensive or is only for professionals, but that’s not the case at all. We fit a full range of golfers, from absolute beginners to PGA Pros, as every single golfer can benefit from a custom fitted set of clubs.

Plus, our custom fitting service is free of charge – you simply pay for the clubs!

“When you buy a club from the rack, which isn’t specifically designed for your height, grip and swing, then your body has to adapt to correct any problems,

creating an uncomfortable swing that affects your ability to improve your game. Custom fitted drivers for example have been shown to increase ball speed, reduce spin rate and increase distance significantly.”

Randall and his team employ traditional methods and state-of-the-art technology to design the perfect club for each individual in a process that takes just under an hour.

Golfers are required to fill in a short questionnaire and provide a few measurements before their swing is studied using the on-site Foresight GC Quad Golf Simulator and a number of tools that monitor everything from face angle, launch angle, spin rate and ball speed.

The team will then use all this information to design a club that will be tailor-made by a manufacturer such as Ping, Titleist, Calloway, Cobra and Mizuno.

Punch and Judy at Colchester Recalled!

A

bout 40 members and friends braved a cold evening on Thursday 17 January to be entertained by Adrian Hutson, who bought along a very impressive range of puppets and his Punch and Judy ‘stand’, in delivering a most informative and graphic account of the long history of puppetry.

He explained that he worked in Colchester theatre for many years, but eventually settled on puppetry because he felt he was then ‘in complete control’ - before there were always directors, producers, sometimes authors and actors

who often wanted their own way, so puppetry was the obvious answer.

Mr Punch first appeared in England on 9 May 1662 and was seen by diarist Samuel Pepys. This is not surprising, as puppetry was mentioned in Rome in the days of Cicero and was also featured in Saxon England.

Today, Punch and Judy in the UK is classed as mainly children’s entertainment, unlike parts of the continent where it is still reckoned to be adult and in Poland where it is regarded as political!

Adrian also showed several of his characters, including a ghost; a policeman and Jack Ketch, the incompetent hangman for the hanging Judge Jeffreys, who was universally hated and Ketch himself was eventually hung by the Judge.

There was also the Devil; Joey the Clown of London Town; and 2 boxers, ‘Bill Basham’ and the coloured former world heavyweight champion Frank Bruno; Toby the dog, traditionally a Jack Russell which would bite Mr Punch’s nose; Mr Punch’s girl friend named Polly who was a pole puppet and also ‘Alf N Safety’ who obviously got walloped

by Mr Punch!

Adrian then gave a short but action-packed demonstration of his art as a Punch and Judy man, which he still enjoys after 35 equally action-packed years.

The next meeting is on Thursday 14th February at the Roman Circus Centre at 7pm, when June Freeman talks about the setting up of Women’s Refuges, which she did in Colchester in the 1970s, as a result of the suffering caused by domestic physical violence. Joe Mullender lands British title shot Liam Williams (19-2-1) will make a first defence of his British middleweight title against former English and IBF European champion Joe Mullender (112) on March 8 at the Royal Albert Hall, live on BT Sport.

he iconic venue steeped in history has only played host to just one professional boxing show in the last 20 years, when Billy Joe Saunders defeated Tony Hill for the vacant Commonwealth title back in April 2012.

He stopped Heffron in December at the Manchester Arena to become a two-weight British champion and he now looks ahead to his maiden defence against the rugged Essex puncher, who will enjoy the home advantage in London.

The Brentwood man, known as ‘Smokin Joe’, won the English title in an epic sequel against Lee Markham in June 2017.

The Royal Albert Hall return will also see heavyweight sensation Daniel Dubois and double Olympic champion Nicola Adams in action.

Former English champion Mullender recorded a brutal stoppage victory over Ben Capps (15-4-2) last time out in October at the Brentwood Centre, just a stone’s throw from his house.

“I respect Liam as a fighter, he has done what he’s done and is levels above me on paper, but I don’t really care who I fight, to be honest.

Welshman Williams was hugely impressive in his move up to middleweight from lightmiddle when he stepped in to face heavy-handed unbeaten prospect Mark Heffron, now 21-1, for the vacant British middlweight strap when no one else would take the fight.

“I think this has got all the makings of an exciting fight and you can see from his style that he always brings it and comes to have a good tear up, so I am looking forward to it,” commented ‘The Machine’ from Clydach Vale, whose only defeats came from world champion Liam Smith.

“It is for the British title and the odds are stacked against me, but that is what I like.”

West Bergholt Concert Band West Bergholt Concert Band hopes you’ve had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and are ready to greet what 2019 holds. Hopefully, that is more than the cold nights and brisk mornings that we have thus far encountered.

T

he holiday period was a time for celebration for many. The Band finished their 40th anniversary celebrations with a full audience at their Christmas Concert hosted at St. Botolph’s Church in Colchester town centre.

The festive atmosphere was complete with all the classics that were performed by training and concert band alike.

With Anderson’s Sleigh Ride featuring alongside Christmas hits such as

Santa Baby, All I Want for Christmas is You and Baby, It’s cold Outside everyone enjoyed the performance.

The first term of the year has been kicked off by one of the bands open rehearsals.

Musicians of all ages were invited to Heathlands Primary School in West Bergholt, where the band rehearses, for a full evening of music.

Having experienced an excellent turn out we are excited to welcome more new players to the band. If you

are interested in the joining the band, come to one of our rehearsals which take place every Friday (6-7pm training band, 7-9pm concert band) during term time.

The first concert of the year is taking place on the 17th March at the West Cliff Theatre in Clacton.

We are welcomed back to this venue every year and we are always thrilled to have the opportunity to perform there.

The band will be performing a various pieces, medleys and songs including Disney Supertime, The Sound of Music, Big Band Showcase, Semper Fidelis and Millers In The Mood.

The concert starts at 3pm and tickets can be purchased on the door.
