RENDA MEDIA SCOUTS’ REPORT
MEDIA SCOUTS’ REPORT
Indiana Head Coach Mark Zilinskas begins his second stint at the helm of the Indians, once again tasked with reviving a program that has fallen on hard times. From 2002-2015, Zilinskas compiled a 68-71 record and led Indiana to its last winning season in 2014. Now back, he inherits a team that has gone just 3-17 over the past two years and has won only 5 of its last 30 games. The current roster numbers just 44 players, including only six seniors, but Zilinskas believes the numbers will grow as the culture begins to shift. He has re-installed his trademark flexbone offense, which will be led by promising 6’2”, 180-pound sophomore quarterback Jason Strack. Senior Elijah Thomas will shoulder much of the rushing load, while veteran linebackers Trent Bufalo and Jacob Snyder are expected to anchor a defense that must become far more physical after allowing over 35 points per game in 2024, including five games with 40 or more surrendered. While the Indians remain young and inexperienced, strides have been made in the weight room and off-field preparation. Zilinskas is realistic about the challenges ahead, but believes success this season may come in the form of growth, toughness, and renewed energy rather than just wins and losses. With a foundation being laid, a turnaround may not be as distant as some expect.

Injuries derailed Homer-Center for a second straight year, leading to another 2-8 finish and marking the first back-to-back losing seasons in Head Coach Greg Page’s 19-year tenure. The Wildcats have won just 9 of their last 31 games, including a playoff loss in 2022. A silver lining? Several underclassmen gained meaningful experience under fire but the team enters the season with plenty of questions. Jr. quarterback Carson Arone returns after throwing for 707 yards and 7 touchdowns, although he threw 13 interceptions. Sr. Riley Cobaugh emerged as one of the area’s premier deep threats, hauling in 21 catches for 471 yards and 6 scores. Junior tight end Deegan Fedoruk added 23 grabs and 2 TDs. Still, the offense averaged just 16.1 points per game while the defense surrendered 33.6, a far cry from the physical units that defined Page’s earlier teams. In fact, the Wildcats have allowed 690 points over the past two seasons. Sophomore Gabe Cobaugh, like his brother Riley, has game-breaking speed and could emerge at tailback. Seniors Gabe Ruffner and Jackson Taylor anchor both lines, while Dom Shimko, Cody Bell, and Gabe Cobaugh will try to restore some defensive grit. Junior kicker Brady Frazer is a special teams weapon, having nailed a countyrecord 46-yard field goal last season at Penns Manor. As one of the conference’s smaller schools, much needs to fall into place for a playoff return.

Center Head Coach Adam Rising enters his eighth season coming off his
to the District 6 Class 2A semifinals and an 8-4 finish in 2024. With seven starters back on offense and six on defense, expectations are high despite needing to fill some holes up front. Senior center and defensive lineman Carter Knox returns as a key anchor, joined byfellow lineman Jason Freeman. Sophomores Jadeon McMillan, TreyLewis, and Brooks Stormer are all vying for starting spots, and the return of 6’1", 265-pound senior Austin McKendrick to the program brings needed experience to the line. They’ll protect senior quarterback Cam Rising, who set a school record with 1,800 passing yards last season and brings poise and leadership to the huddle. Sophomore TroySlovinsky impressed as a freshman and is expected to takeon a bigger role this year. A deep and physical running back group— including Trent Slovinsky, Tyler Phillips, Alex Brudnock, and Michael Fabbri—gives the offense balance and toughness. Phillips also leads the defense after tallying over 100 tackles a year ago, with Rising and Trent Slovinskyback at linebacker to form a strong second level. The biggest defensive question lies in rebuilding the line alongside Knox, but the Stingers are confident in their depth. After a 7-3 regular season in 2024, Heritage Conference coaches picked Marion Center to finish second in the league—just ahead of United Valley, though the two teams won’tmeet in the regular season due to scheduling quirks. That decision has drawn criticism, especially with both teams expected to contend for a playoff run. If Marion Center can stayhealthyand develop in the trenches, this could be a special season. PREDICTION: 8-2

Northern Cambria has played two of the past three District 6 championship games—defeating Penns Manor for the title in 2022 before falling to eventual state champion Bishop Guilfoyle last year—and returns enough talent to remain a contender in 2025. But for the first time in several seasons, the Colts won’t have all-world quarterback Ty Dumm at the helm. Dumm was the heart of the offense, accounting for a staggering 74% of the team’s production while throwing for 2,041 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushing for 1,369 yards and another 18 scores. Jr. Danny Farrell, who was second on the team with 29 receptions and seven touchdowns last year, is expected to take over under center despite attempting just two passes in 2024. He’ll be supported by a senior-heavy skill group, including running back Gage Shonsky, who was emerging as a threat with 209 rushing yards on 37 carries before a season ending injury in Week 7. Seniors Malik Fox (193 rushing yards on just 19 carries, 18 catches for 385 yards) and Reese Wagner (271 total yards) also return with playmaking ability. The Colts averaged just under 32 points per game last season and were stout defensively, surrendering only 10.4 points per contest and allowing 10 or more points just four times all season—one of those in the 42-point outburst by Bishop Guilfoyle. Senior linebacker Zak Kirsch returns after leading the team with 141 tackles, and he'll be joined by Shonsky and senior lineman Parker Shutty to anchor a defense that has been among the best in the classification. After going 21-4 over the past two seasons, including 9-1 regular-season marks both years, NC may not reach nine wins this fall—but the cupboard isn’t bare, and come November, the Colts should be right back in the postseason mix.

For the first time since 2005, Penns Manor football enters a season with a new head coach following the retirement of longtime leader Bill Packer, who guided the Comets to a 137-87 record over 20 seasons. Stepping in is Penns Manor alum Carson Rhea, a trusted assistant for 19 years under Packer, who now looks to continue the program’s strong tradition. The Comets finished 6-6 last season and extended their impressive playoff streak to 17 consecutive years. While they lost several key skill players, they return five offensive starters and seven on defense, including most of their offensive line. That group will be crucial in helping junior quarterback Tyler Cooper, a strong runner with improved passing skills, step into the starting role. Fullback Justin Vojtek (412 yards, 3 TDs) returns as a physical presence in the backfield, while the line is anchored by veterans Dylan Depp, Nick Frampton, and Evan Fennell. Tight end Seth McCracken adds to a formidable front. On defense, linebacker Dylan Depp leads the way after a staggering 203-tackle campaign that topped the state. The front seven looks solid, though the secondary remains a work in progress with several underclassmen in the mix for positions including freshman Max Sunseri, sophomores Andy Jarvie, Josh Schleicher, and Cooper. With so many uncertanties, could Penns Manor’s playoff streak be in jeopardy?

Purchase Line enters the 2025 season looking to turn the corner after a 3-7 campaign, and with eight starters returning on both sides of the ball, there’s reason for optimism. Head Coach Matt Falisec, now in his ninth season, is just two years removed from a District 6 title game appearance and will lean on a solid senior class of 11 players. Offensive improvement is a key focus after averaging just 12 points and 180 yards per game last year. Senior QB Ian Layden is back under center after throwing for 623 yards and seven touchdowns, and he’ll be supported by a veteran offensive line featuring Colton Falisec, Tyson Lear, and Ethan Buterbaugh. The backfield should be stronger as well, led by Victor Bartlebaugh (440 yards in 2024) and Seth Frantz Underclassmen Maddox Frantz, Zander Davis, Micah Lotson, and Matthew Johnston will also compete for time. Defensively, Purchase Line must replace standout linebacker Devlan Kordish, but the experience gained last season and added depth have Falisec feeling confident. The Red Dragons open on the road at Conemaugh Township in a matchup of experienced squads that could offer an early indicator of whether Purchase Line is ready to make a run in District 6. Win a close game or two and it changes everything, but playing so many 2-A schools makes things more challenging than ever before in the Heritage Conference.

Ed Dalton returns to Indiana County, where he began his coaching career at Purchase Line in the late ’80s—winning a District 6 title in 1991— to take over a River Valley program that has enjoyed strong regular seasons but suffered back-to-back first-round playoff blowout losses. Known as a turnaround specialist, Dalton doesn’t need to rebuild the Panthers, but rather guide them over the postseason hump. Junior quarterback Max Persichetti, who completed 58% of his passes for 714 yards and 7 touchdowns last year, returns to lead an offense that averaged 31 points per game. Replacing the graduated backfield duo of Sam Yanits (1,283 yards, 17 TDs) and Gavin Burkhart (1,102 yards, 14 TDs) won’t be easy, but Dalton is confident in senior transfer Brody Hutter from Mt. Pleasant to help fill that void. The foundation lies up front, where four of five offensive linemen return—Dakota Sprague, Jakob Twincheck, Zeke Doak, and Ben Witmer—as well as all three interior defensive linemen in Casey Yingling, Michael Wano, and Evan Strouse. River Valley brings back seven starters on offense and five on defense, but Dalton notes competition is strong throughout a deep roster that may approach 60 players. With the largest enrollment in the Heritage Conference— just shy of Class 3A—the Panthers have size, depth, and experience. Dalton’s leadership and past playoff pedigree may be the difference this time around. River Valley won’t be judged on regular-season wins, but whether they finally deliver in November.

Now entering its fourth year as a co-op between United and Blacklick Valley, United Valley looks to take the next step under second-year head coach Lou McElwee. The Lions overcame a 1-3 start last season by rattling off five straight wins before being shut out by Marion Center and falling to Richland in the District 6 Class 2A playoffs. While the defense loses eight starters—including standout linemen Tavin Shirk and Braxton Jelley, and the entire linebacker corps—three offensive linemen (Max McConville, Brady Verba, Carter Rummell) return to anchor the trenches, and they should help to stabilize the defensive front. Junior quarterback Dimitri Worthington leads the way after passing for 837 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushing for 404 yards and 8 more scores as a sophomore. Although United Valley must replace its top two running backs, Nate Szymusiak (416 yards) is back in the backfield, along with wide receiver Ethan Luko (14 catches, 234 yards, 3 TDs). Last year’s defense allowed just 14.5 points per game and often kept the Lions competitive even when the offense stalled. The Lions were shut out in 4 of their 5 losses. With promising young talent coming up from successful junior high squads and a few offensive improvements, the Lions could contend for a conference title. If the defense can reload and the offense becomes more consistent, United Valley has the potential to be one of the Heritage Conference’s most dangerous teams. Its opener against two-time defending District 6 champion Cambria Heights should be an early litmus test.

Phil Parks enters his second year as head coach of the West Shamokin Wolves with a renewed sense of optimism, hoping that a strong offseason, an increase in roster size, and valuable experience gained by a young team in 2024 will start to show results. Though the Wolves have faced challenges in recent seasons, and enter the new year on a 12-game losing streak, there are plenty of reasons for hope. West Shamokin, which hasn’t won a game since October 13, 2023 in a 27-24 win over Homer-Center, returns 7 offensive starters, including sophomore quarter-back Cole Wingard , who impressed in his debut season, passing for 270 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 402 rushing yards and 4 TD’s as a freshman. Senior wideout Aiden Oesterling and junior Jordon Titus will help provide leadership in the passing game, and the Wolves return three key offensive linemen in seniors Rocco Buffone and Hunter Runco , along with junior Trey Rocco . Seven starters also return on defense, including the imposing 6'4", 300-pound tackle Connor Gervasoni . Buffone, Runco, and seniors Hunter Winghart and Ryan Booher will anchor the linebacker corps. Parks highlighted the team's success in the offseason weight program, with many players showing significant improvements in strength. The Wolves will look to build on this momentum by becoming more physical and competitive. They open their season against Portage, hoping their luck changes and they can break their losing streak and build a foundation for the future. While the 2025 campaign may feature some growing pains with a youthful roster, West Shamokin’s resilience and determination point to brighter days ahead.

Could a three-peat be in the cards for Cambria Heights? After capturing the District 6 Class 1A title with a schoolrecord 10 wins in 2023, the Highlanders raised the bar again last season, finishing 13-1 and claiming the 2A championship before falling to Central Clarion in the PIAA quarterfinals. Now in his 15th season, Head Coach Jarrod Lewis faces one of his biggest challenges yet with eight starters lost on both offense and defense—including all of the team’s offensive skill players. Senior Kaiden Ivory takes over at quarterback, having attempted just four passes last season, while sophomore Nolan Clawson—a dynamic athlete who rushed for 296 yards at 10.2 yards per carry —will help carry the offensive load. Senior Carson Lobick hopes to emerge as a top receiving target, and the offensive line brings back three key starters in Jack Sherwood, Hayden Leamer, and James Holtz. Defense remains the backbone of the program after giving up only 45 points during the regular season in 2024. Senior linebacker Dawson Warner and junior defensive end Bryce Lewis are proven playmakers who will anchor a unit in transition. Lobick and Clawson also return in the secondary, giving the Highlanders some experience on the back end. The early part of the schedule will be a major test, with four likely playoff contenders on tap, but Lewis has established a winning culture since joining the Heritage Conference in 2021. With steady progress, Cambria Heights could once again be a serious factor in November.
prediction: 7-3

The Conemaugh Valley Blue Jays are entering a new era under head coach Phil Holsopple, who takes over a program that's struggled in recent years, finishing 1-9 last season and 5-25 in its last 30 games. Holsopple, who has extensive coaching experience with Shade and Greater Johnstown, including serving as offensive coordinator during Shade's 2018 District 5 championship season, plans to overhaul the Blue Jays' systems on both sides of the ball. Offensively, CV will adopt an Air Raid scheme, focusing heavily on the passing game, with a competition among three underclassman quarterbacks: junior Justin Robine (mobile), junior Nate Stiffler (accurate lefty), and sophomore Xzavior Tatum (strong arm). Those not starting at quarterback will likely contribute at running back or wide receiver. Holsopple's defensive strategy will feature a 4-3 or 3-3 alignment with an emphasis on being aggressive. Senior defensive end Eric Korhut, one of the team's standout players, will anchor the defense, although CV gave up 40+ points in seven of their nine losses last season. The Blue Jays return six offensive starters, including center Tanner Holsopple is focused on building depth, which will be year may not be measured by wins and losses, the energy and

He’ll be supported by a strong ground game led by seniors Brennan Lohr (771 yards, 6 TDs) and Liam Richardson , while senior wideout D.J. Bambino (8 catches, 184 yards) returns as a key tar-get. Up front, the Indians bring back four of five starting offensive linemen, giving the offense both experience and continuity. Defensively, Lohr and Dawson Statler anchor a unit that brings back nine starters and held opponents to under 20 points per game last season. Bambino and Lohr are also expected to make an impact in the secondary, and junior linebacker Michael Weber adds physicality to the front seven. With more size, depth, and leadership across the board, expectations are rising. The schedule opens with a home game against Purchase Line, followed by road trips to West Shamokin and River Valley, a preseason favorite in the Heritage Conference. No longer a surprise, the Indians look poised to contend again in District 5 and could be a legitimate playoff threat.
Prediction: 6-4

Team Concern: “Leadership needs to be at an all-time high. Every year we look for leaders. It really shows when we face adversity. How we handle those times will be telling.”

Portage has long been known for its punishing ground game out of the Wing-T and deep stable of 1,000-yard rushers, but the past two seasons have seen a dip in offensive production, including a 15.8 points-per-game average last year in a 4-7 campaign. Quarterback Easton Slanoc returns after splitting snaps with Owen Gouse , and head coach Slanoc hopes his son can stay healthy to lead a bounce-back season. While top rusher Issac Willinsky graduated, his younger brother Noah (51 carries, 243 yards, 4.8 avg.) looks ready to carry the load in a run-heavy attack. Senior receiver Gavin Bobolsky , the team’s secondleading pass catcher in 2024, also returns. The Mustangs will benefit from experience up front, with four starting linemen— Ethan Strittmatter, Brock Miko, Josh Harshberger, and Jordon Klein —back to pave the way. Defensively, Portage must replace six starters from a unit that gave up nearly 25 points per game and surrendered four or more touchdowns in five of its seven losses. However, several seniors return to anchor the defense, including linebacker Lucas Gathers , Noah Willinsky , and massive 320-pound tackle Fence Rocke r, who teams up with Klein to bolster the defensive front. A promising group of underclassmen from a talented junior high program could provide a boost if they mature quickly. To return to form, Portage must reestablish its hard-nosed identity and diversify its offense. The Mustangs once ruled the WestPAC but have found life tougher in the deeper, more competitive Heritage Conference. A playoff return is likely with steady improvement and Mustangs could be a dangerous 1-A playoff team come November.

Offensive Strengths: The Crimson Hawks return three All-Conference starters on the offensive side of the ball, including WR Maurice Massey, who earned First Team All-PSAC after hauling in 8 touchdowns and totaling 612 receiving yards last fall. Running back J.D. Younger (Second Team All-PSAC) returns, and QB Matthew Reuve transfers from Findlay after garnering Second Team All-GMAC honors in 2024. Rueve was rated the number one QB prospect in Ohio in the class of 2020. Coach Frank Cignetti Jr. returns to IUP as the Offensive Coordinator.
Defensive Strengths: IUP returns two All-PSAC defensive backs including Kalen Frazier and Seton Hill transfer David Awuah (who led the PSAC with 5 interceptions in 9 games). DE Logan Goodwin’s 5.5 sacks were eighth best in the conference, and he returns, along with 6 other starters from the PSAC West’s best defense. The Hawks were the second best defense overall in the PSAC, just behind Kutztown.
Special Teams: Two impressive All-PSAC special teams contributors also return. PK/P Nick Andrasi ranked first in the conference with 11 field goals made, including a long of 49 yards. Kick return specialist Kalen Frazer recorded 16 punt returns for 198 yards. Punter Aiden Spitler also returns.

IUP finished a disappointing 7-3 last year and again out of the national playoffs. After starting off 4-0, they dropped back to back games to arch-rival Slippery Rock and Edinboro, and later with playoff hopes on life support at California, all in incredibly heart breaking fashion. SRU scored with 12 seconds remaining to steal a 33-32 victory, Edinboro upset the Hawks 27-23 scoring with 8 seconds left, and then Cal dealt the death blow 16-13 in overtime. IUP will open the season for a 4th straight season on a Thursday night, September 4th when it hosts Ashland of Ohio in a non-conference game at Miller Stadium. For the Hawks, their fate will be determined in what could be classified a 2-game regular season, October 18th when they travel to Slippery Rock, and then a week later when they host California in the 16th annual Coal Bowl. Win those two, and they likely would return to the D2 national playoffs for the first time since 2022. The big stories to watch will be new Offensive Coordinator Frank Cignetti’s offense, how transfer QB Matt Reuve performs, and if a rebuilt offensive line holds up. Defense and special teams should be a strength. If the offense performs at a good to great level, 2025 might be a special season.
PREDICTOIN: Talons Up… 9-1
