‘THE BEST STAFF IN THE WORLD’: PATIENTS BECOME FRIENDS AT TAVOIAN FAMILY DENTISTRY

CEDAR CITY’S “SMILE DOCTOR” IS IN.

Dr. Brian K. Tavoian has been a fixture on Main Street for 29 years, and he says the key to his successful practice is no secret but simply the age-old principle of the golden rule of business: treating his loyal team and the community they serve just like family.

“I care about them, they care about me,” he said, adding that this philosophy extends to everyone in his office. “We just have the best staff anywhere, no question.”

Recently, Best of Iron County voters awarded Tavoian Family Dentistry top honors in both dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. Reflecting on winning gold for the second year in a row, Tavoian said it’s an honor to serve the community he loves and where he has spent his entire dental career.

Tavoian grew up in northern Utah and moved to Nebraska to attend dental school after graduating from Utah State University. There were no dental schools in Utah at the time, but he knew he wanted to return to his home and find a town with a similar “historic downtown meets college town” atmosphere as that of Logan – just not so cold. He settled in Cedar City in June 1992 and opened the doors of Tavoian Family Dentistry.

A STRONG AND LOYAL FOUNDATION

Starting an independent practice straight out of dental school was a rarity in the early ‘90s, Tavoian said. Most dentists chose to associate with an established health service, the military or pursue a specialty rather than leasing a building, buying their own equipment and hiring a staff. It was to Cedar City’s benefit that Tavoian chose another path.

Apparently it has paid off. Nearly three decades later, Tavoian is still providing the community with general dental services and has since added custom procedures including implants and smile makeovers, and he has patients who go back with him to the very beginning. “I still feel the same way I did the day I moved here,” he said. “There’s so many great people in Iron County.”

Tavoian Family Dentistry office manager Barb Carter, who has been with the practice for 24 years, said she has built friendships with generations of patients who have come to rely on Tavoian for all of their family’s dentistry needs.

“We just had someone come in, and I was telling his little kids that I’ve known their dad since he was maybe 12,” Carter said.

In addition to Carter, the practice includes a staff of six others working alongside Tavoian, including two dental assistants who

have been there for 18 and 20 years respectively and a hygienist who was the first employee hired in 1992.

Tavoian said he takes pride in the longevity of his staff, especially in a field known for frequent turnover, and added that after all this time, they feel more like a family than a dental team.

“I say this to them all the time, and they probably get sick of hearing it,” he said, “but I really do have the best staff in Cedar City, and therefore I have the best staff in Utah. If I have the best staff in Utah, I have the best staff in the United States. If I have the best staff in the United States, I have the best staff in the world. And guess what? If I have the best staff in the world, I have the best staff in the universe!”

A SOLID HISTORY CARRIES INTO A BRIGHT FUTURE

Over the past 29 years, Tavoian Family Dentistry has evolved along with the needs of the community and advancements in dental techniques. Tavoian relishes the challenge

of providing patients with the latest technology and procedures. He was the first dentist in the area to offer digital X-rays, electronic charts and same-day crowns.

“Even though Cedar City is a small town, our practice has kept pace with the technology out there in dentistry,” he said. “A lot of people don’t like change; I like learning more and better things.”

Tavoian said he envisions practicing in Iron County for another 10 to 15 years. He plans to stay in the same familiar location, continuing to provide cutting-edge dentistry with the warm and friendly service the community has come to expect.

“We’re going to keep doing the great work we’ve been doing for almost three decades, while always looking for ways we can improve,” he said.

DESERT SANDS KETAMINE OFFERS HOPE, HEALING FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH MOOD DISORDERS

For people living with treatment-resistant depression and other mental health disorders, therapeutic IV infusions may hold the key to stabilizing mood imbalances, providing relief and hope at last.

Dr. Eric Evans established Desert Sands Ketamine Treatment Center to offer a lifeline for patients suffering from clinical depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and clinical anxiety, as well as chronic pain conditions. Many have already tried the pharmaceutical approach with little success. “Patients are finding us and getting help,” he said. “We’ve had a tremendous amount of success helping people with their depression, PTSD, anxiety and more.”

Evans has routinely administered ketamine in the operating room over the course of his 25-year career as a board-certified anesthesiologist. Administered in low doses via IV infusion, ketamine works to stabilize mood imbalances by boosting a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor. It targets the amygdala, a part of the brain that processes moods and emotions in the conscious mind.

Research demonstrates that ketamine is approximately 70% effective in treating depression, a significantly higher success rate than antidepressants and traditional talk therapy. Offering lasting results, a relatively safe side effect profile and few contraindications with other drugs, Evans said it’s nothing short of a “wonder drug” for treatment-resistant depression and other mood disorders. Patients shouldn’t trust just any ketamine provider with their therapy, however. At Desert Sands Ketamine, Evans has created a spa-like, comfortable healing environment with compassionate staff who are dedicated to helping every patient achieve the best results possible. Every patient’s experience begins with a complimentary consultation to discuss their issues and determine if ketamine is right for them.

Following the consultation, patients undergo infusions twice a week for up to three weeks. The team will assess their progress after the

first four sessions. Patients typically remain in the maintenance phase after completing their initial course of treatment, Evans said. Most require an infusion only once a month or once every other month to sustain their improved mood.

Infusions typically last about 45 minutes, during which time patients enter a dreamlike state they often describe as relaxing and enjoyable. Because ketamine metabolizes quickly, the dissociative effects begin to fade as soon as the infusion stops. Evans said patients usually feel back to normal within 15-20 minutes.

Every session is supervised by a physician and conducted in a private space. After an infusion, the staff at Desert Sands Ketamine will have a discussion with each patient about the sensations they experienced and where their thoughts traveled.

“That’s a good time for us to get to know them better and see if there’s other tools we can add to their toolbox to help them deal with their depression, anxiety and other issues,” Evans said. The clinic provides patients with resources to improve all aspects of their well-being, including dietary guidance, meditation, massage therapy, relationship counseling and talk therapy. Recognizing that every individual has a unique story and set of issues that they’re dealing with, Evans strives to use a complete approach to each patient.

Southern Utah’s first responders bear witness to violence, death and other distressing experiences in the line of duty, which sometimes leads to burnout and feelings of depression and anxiety. Evans and his caring staff help restore a sense of calm and balance for patients like Dan, a 20-year law enforcement veteran who carried a burden of trauma into his retirement.

“Dr. Evans put me at ease, and I dove in,” he said. “My transition was very gradual, but I did notice a real difference in how I look at life. Dr. Evans goes above and beyond, and I consider him a friend.”

While ketamine has received much attention in recent years as a breakthrough treatment for mood disorders, Evans said the medical world is now discovering how beneficial it can be in treating chronic pain conditions, including migraines. Ketamine is a highly effective painkiller and a dissociative anesthetic. And because it’s administered via IV infusion, pain relief begins almost immediately.

“Ketamine has been nothing short of miraculous for a lot of people in our clinic,” he added. “With ketamine, people can wake up in the morning and joy is a possibility for them again.”

Kacie Carballo and her husband, Reyes, have owned and operated Dry Lakes Ranch for more than a decade. Their livestock are young, healthy and humanely raised animals, ensuring superior quality.

“It’s an experience to have a piece of our meat,” Kacie Carballo said. “As soon as they taste it, they start talking to their friends and neighbors and family.”

The Carballos harvest only high-quality beef cattle that are genetically selected for growth (muscle) and condition (fat). Each steer is butchered in the prime of its life for tender, juicy cuts.

Cattle are butchered weekly. After harvesting, the meat is dry aged for two weeks and vacuum sealed. Dry Lakes Ranch Beef guarantees that their cuts are always fresh and never frozen.

Dry Lakes Ranch is Beef Quality Assurance certified. The Carballos take great pride in practicing lowstress, instinct-driven animal handling as taught by Dr. Temple Grandin.

When cattle are humanely raised and handled, they perform better, which results in a higher quality product for customers.

During the pandemic, the meat shelves at grocery stores nationwide were empty, and cattle prices plummeted. The Carballos stepped in to fill the gap by opening a brick-andmortar meat shop on Parowan’s historic Main Street.

Less than 5% of cattle nationwide are graded Prime by the USDA, and superior quality beef is hard to come by even when supply is plentiful. Carballo said that for meat connoisseurs, there’s no mistaking the difference between carefully raised local cattle and beef from a grocery store that’s produced en masse. Southern Utahns love giving Dry Lakes Ranch Beef as a gift because it represents a little piece of the place they call home.

in Parowan, and Carballo said they sell out every weekend. The majority of customers are Southern Utah locals, but some travel from neighboring states with coolers to stock up. Most people find out about it through word-of-mouth.

Carballo operates the storefront alongside her mother. As a woman-operated business, she said it’s far less intimidating than other meat shops. They also sell cooking aids, including spices, as well as farm and ranch décor.

“It’s not like a normal butcher counter,” she said. “We love helping people who don’t know a lot about beef with picking out the right cuts of meat for them.”

Dry Lakes Ranch, formerly known as Mitchell Herefords, has been a working cattle ranch for more than a century. It was founded in 1873 by some of the pioneer families that helped settle Iron County.

Today, the Carballos raise about 300 head of Hereford and Angus cattle on its pastures. They also farm several hundred acres, which allows them to finish feed their beef with high-quality corn, grains and alfalfa.
