The history of Herring & Herring dates back to 1972 when C. David Herring established a law firm in San Diego after being discharged from the Army. His daughter, Margaret K. Herring, joined the firm in 1989 to fill a “temporary” receptionist position for two weeks. That evolved into secretarial duties, then paralegal duties, after which she enrolled in the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, taking night classes while raising two young children.
Although she insists she never intended to work for her dad, Herring discovered a passion for the law and never left. She became a partner in 2003. In total, the father-daughter team worked together for over 30 years before C. David Herring’s passing in 2019. The firm still carries the name of Herring & Herring in his honor.
“He may be gone, but the legacy continues,” Herring said. “We’re still here, still doing what we’ve always done with excellent client care and attention to detail.”
Rather than growing, the firm has streamlined and evolved over the years. The Herrings left downtown San Diego for Coronado in the summer of 2006 and never looked back.
“In my opinion, it’s been the best change we ever made,” Herring said. “We treat clients like family, and we’re better able to do that in a small town.”
Herring & Herring has been consistently awarded the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethics by the Martindale Hubbell Peer Review Panel. Herring is particularly proud of the fact that most of her clients have had long-term relationships with the firm. She has assisted families with legal matters and life transitions spanning generations.
Herring said the key to the firm’s enduring success is the mutual respect and partnership she shared with her father, which she believes demonstrates consistency and patience. After all, not many families can work together for 30 years.
Estate planning is completely unique to each person and their family’s circumstances, Herring said. Each planning tool has advantages and disadvantages, and an experienced and knowledgeable attorney will guide them to the best solution.
Herring also gives back to the community with pro-bono work. She has served as a court-appointed attorney to represent incapacitated adults in San Diego County since 2008.
Also familiar faces in the community, the firm’s dedicated and experienced staff help keep things running smoothly. Office manager and paralegal Denise Rubio joined the firm in 2012, and paralegal Ryan Whaley came on board in 2015. Their knowledge, warmth and attention to detail help create a positive and friendly environment that clients have enjoyed for years.
The Herrings became well-known for having a dog-friendly office during their early years in Coronado. Both father and daughter brought their own dogs to work, and many clients got to know them. A pup named Trooper is now the firm’s beloved mascot. Herring said the firm hasn’t needed to advertise since arriving in Coronado. Everybody knows everybody around town, and many clients feel completely comfortable just popping into the office with a legal question.
