Welcome ➔ elitebusiness100

Welcome to the 2024 results of the Elite Business Top 100.

Huge congratulations to all the SME businesses that have made the Elite Business Top 100 this year and many thanks to our sponsors and partners for their valued support. This year we had a huge uptake of brands entering that had been successful the previous year. Indeed, over 40% managed to retain their annual title as an EB100 Winner. To advertise their success and with the support of our partners, the annual list now has a digital reach of 500,000 individuals. About the EB100

Scott English EB100 Brand Director

The EB100 National Awards recognise and rank the brightest and best SME businesses in the UK. Whilst other awards and recognition systems exist, we go deeper into the application process. Elite Business has always been an industry disruptor, whether that be across the content we cover online, or through our national event, Elite Business Live.

We’ve seen the winners demonstrate incredible achievements through their submissions to make the top 100 cut 6

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

We strive to ensure the EB100 Awards has the credibility to really reward and recognise the best of Britain’s SME entrepreneurs. We’ve seen the winners demonstrate incredible achievements through their submissions to make the top 100 cut. And now they’ll be able to use the EB100 accreditation to show Britain what they’re made of. How the EB100 is judged

SME businesses enter via an online application form, which is then judged by a panel of industry experts. Companies have to demonstrate capability in several categories in addition to financial performance, which includes longevity, contribution to the community, team development and innovation. Every stage of their business lifecycle is evaluated. Huge recognition for their efforts

“Making the list in the EB100 league is truly an achievement to be proud of,” said Piers Linney, (ex BBC Dragon’s Den Investor, Founder of Implement AI). “The business plans of the finalists to ensure stability through the current economic hardship is remarkable. The EB100 has shown that despite all of this, they haven't allowed it to hinder the overall performance of their businesses, and many have, in fact, thrived. These top 100 SMEs have impressed us with their innovation and growth – they deserve huge recognition for their efforts.” The SME community in 2023

2023 remained a challenging time

for some businesses, (although not all) and for many they are not back to pre-COVID levels yet. However it’s not all doom and gloom as other brands are having a boom time witnessing sales hand over fist and posting strong financial results. So it really is a mixed bag at present in the UK SME marketplace. We asked experts in the business community for their thoughts and trends we can expect to see in 2024

Is data the only game in town now? According to some it is and they would even go so far as to say that all SMEs should now be looking to include it in their business models and reworking them in order to be fit for purpose. AI is definitely a game-changing tool and used correctly can streamline some parts of the business. Consequently, it behooves all of us to not only understand it, but also know how to use it. Those left behind may struggle to recover. Sustainability is going to continue to be a big word in 2024 too, possibly replacing DE&I as the hottest topic, as more and more brands seek to become B Corp members. In the meantime, expansion into international markets will likely continue to be as attractive for brands as it was in 2023.

We have a spectacular evening in store for you, with additional awards for exceptional performances we look forward to sharing with you. Of course, the EB100 wouldn’t exist without elitebusinessmagazine.co.uk which is one of the UK’s leading portals full of articles, information and insights into the SME business world. My thanks to all our contributors for keeping the content fresh and relevant and also a huge thanks to all of our strategic media partners and sponsors who continue to support us. We’re also very excited as Elite Business Live ‘On Tour’ has now completed, and we’re back to our usual national conference format in central London on the 13th – 14th March, where budding entrepreneurs will join together to gain extraordinary insight into growth and how to innovate their businesses. We hope you can join us there also. Here’s to a fantastic 2024 and from all of us at Elite Business HQ we wish you a prosperous and thriving year ahead. Scott English EB100 Brand Director

Diary Date – 13th March 2024

If your brand is listed in the EB100 then you’re invited to the Celebration & Awards evening, which will take place on 13th March 2024 at Leonardo Royal, St Paul’s, London.

Don’t forget to shout about your success!

Hawkstone Commercials

➔ hawkstonecommercials.co.uk

Hawkstone Commercials is in the business of arranging commercial vehicle deals. It's a formula that's proving to be a successful one for the brokerage

2022

14

Cardiff

Hawkstone Commercials is a commercial vehicle brokerage which was established by Oliver Lewis and Paul Ricketts in January 2022 after working together for nearly 10 years in various other brokers and main franchised dealers. They began trading in the March from Paul’s kitchen table with the initial business plan forecast to generate £150,000 in sales revenue during the first year, but things didn’t exactly turn out as planned. During the first few months there was a worldwide stock shortage which meant dealers had no interest in supplying vehicles to them which made turning any sort of profit extremely difficult. Many evenings Oliver and Paul would be finishing the day thinking that they may have made a mistake and whether starting a vehicle brokerage at this time was the best idea.

42

Motor Trade

They scraped together whatever stock they could and used their very limited marketing budget on paid ad campaigns to generate inbound enquiries which soon began to gain traction. Thanks to increased interest rates and rising vehicle costs, dealers were starting to feel their own pain in the industry and those who refused to work with them soon came back with a proposition. It was six months into the business and luck began to change for Oliver and Paul. Utilising social media and additional ad campaigns, Hawkstone Commercials would soon establish itself as a transparent, reliable vehicle supply source and over the course of the next few months they would recruit additional members of staff and generate over £4 million in their first trading year, far exceeding their initial expectations.

They have developed relationships with over 120 franchised dealers and manufacturers, enabling them to source a vast amount of stock at any one time, and find the best prices for customers by comparing the quotations from various suppliers. Hawkstone Commercials boasts a 5-star rating on all review platforms, including Google and Facebook which is an extremely difficult task within our industry. We are just one of two commercial vehicle brokers in the UK with a perfect online reputation, something that we have worked extremely hard for. The service level is complimented by our internal structure. In most brokers, they have a salesperson who completes all the administrative work, as well as book deliveries. This is not how we do it at Hawkstone Commercials. Once a vehicle is sold by our sales team, it goes straight to our sales support team for processing, then to our accounts department, and finally to our logistics team. It enables minimal mistakes and delays in getting the right vehicle to the customer. During March 2023 Hawkstone launched sister-arm; Hawkstone Motor Finance. This is an independent finance brokerage with over 20+ direct lenders onboard. It can provide competitive funding solutions for consumers and businesses who wish to save money when purchasing a new or used, car or van. We have seen

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

incredible success during the first 12 months with over 70 introducers onboard and a lender panel that caters for all circumstances. Our success has not gone unnoticed, and we have accumulated a selection of prestigious titles in awards ceremonies across the UK. Some notable achievements include The Great British Entrepreneur Awards which were held in London during November 2023 where Oliver and Paul were crowned “Start-up Entrepreneurs of the Year” at the Grosvenor House. In addition, we have won the “Commercial Vehicle Supplier of the Year” two years running at the UK Enterprise Awards.

When Oliver and Paul developed the business plans for Hawkstone Commercials and Hawkstone Motor Finance, they knew that a key area they wanted to focus on was giving back to charity. In October, Hawkstone Commercials acquired a Ford Double Cab for Lads & Dads, a local men’s mental health and wellbeing C.I.C that operates around Bridgend and surrounding areas. They have also supported various events held by Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital in Cardiff. The community engagement and business success has sparked the interest of our local members of parliament and in April 2023 we were fortunate to welcome Huw Irranca-Davies MS and Sarah

Murphy MS to our offices for a tour and a discussion on how we can all help local school pupils embark on rewarding entrepreneurial career opportunities. During November 2023, they launched the Hawkstone Scholarship Programme in partnership with the University of South Wales which enables business study students to compete for a bursary funded by Hawkstone Commercials. Another great way in which they are encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs. Hawkstone Commercials has demonstrated incredible growth during what has been described as the most difficult times within the motor industry for over thirty years. Oliver and Paul have now set their sights on the next five years with new arms to the business, more staff and additional premises to cater for the very ambitious growth plans.

We do this by sitting down with clients and carrying out product and culture training, and providing constant training for our team. It is imperative that we listen and implement ways of working that help them grow. Sales can be a tedious job and it’s our job to make sure we are thinking outside the box to keep our team motivated. To achieve this, we must ensure that we put our team's well-being first. This includes quarterly team building days out, monthly incentives and the Excel monthly wellbeing package. In 2023 Excel introduced the UK’s first ever construction telemarketing CPD; this has since been delivered to over 80 different companies across the UK and Europe. In 2024 Excel announced it would also be introducing a North West Construction show. STORY22 46 ➔ story22.co.uk

A marketing company with an interesting tale to tell for businesses 2020

10

Marketing often feels complicated and confusing, which leads businesses to waste time and money on tactics that don’t deliver a great return. Why not? Because marketing traditionally focuses on aggrandising the business/ product/service in order to win sales. As a result businesses spend more and work harder than ever to hit their goals. Should marketing your business be this tough? No. But when customers can’t immediately see the value a business offers it makes it harder (and expensive) to build a connection with them. Sonya Whittam and Julie Firth identified a prime opportunity to launch a story-focused full service marketing agency to help organisations articulate their offer authentically so clients could engage customers faster (and win more business). STORY22 has achieved this by focusing purely on what matters

48

Kent

Marketing

to clients’ customers and not what matters to the business. Academic studies by psychologist Jerome Bruner show the brain engages faster when messaging is targeted at our needs – which is why STORY22 flips marketing to focus on the customer first, and always. STORY22 utilises a story framework to do this effectively – because story has 22 x the recall power of information delivered as facts. The customer’s story acts as a filter across all their client marketing. The websites they develop challenge the status quo by stripping out fussy menu navigation to control the narrative that customers really want to hear.

The carefully curated story engages customers willingly and leads them easily through the website to the logical next steps. STORY22 have found clients are often surprised by this paradigm shift in approach but the results speak for themselves. Time spent on page is typically up by around 50%. Sales are up by 65%. Emails opened/engaged with are at 3x the industry average rate. Their approach makes it easier (and cost effective) for organisations to connect with customers and win business. STORY22 was set up in 2020, just weeks before the pandemic erupted, by founders Sonya and

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

Julie - two experienced qualified strategic marketers, now supported by a highly skilled team of 10. STORY22 serves clients around the world, across all industries. So what sets STORY22 apart? It’s not rocket science – it’s highly effective communication, pure and simple. They help organisations get better results by changing the words they use. No smoke and mirror tactics, no complex formulas or software clients have to invest in, just a simple method that vastly improves the way businesses communicate. They then apply it across every aspect of their clients’ marketing, from their website to lead

generation, email marketing, even SEO, PR and digital advertising. Their focus, however, is not solely on delivering outstanding marketing for paying clients. They go beyond that to empower businesses and non profits not yet in a position to hire their services, by showing them how to implement this for themselves. STORY22 is passionate about helping others to utilise this approach so they can understand how to engage prospects faster and communicate more effectively. The Kent-based marketing agency offers free strategy sessions, downloadable resources and webinars too. They also offer free and low cost

workshop places that can help everyone from solopreneurs through to entire marketing divisions to clarify their message. The team live and breathe the approach they take to clients’ work in their own daily operation, by standing by their ethos of putting the needs of their customers first and foremost. They offer unlimited revisions to any work and a complete money-back satisfaction guarantee, which they proudly say has never been requested. Julie adds: “Effective marketing shouldn’t be the preserve of those with eye-watering budgets to play with. And we’re here to demonstrate it doesn’t have to be.”

49

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

We want to tell you a story STORY22 offers a story-based marketing solution that has already garnered broad appeal in a variety of sectors, but its own story is really only on the first chapter…

50

Marketing agency start-up STORY22’s customer-focused approach aims to use the power of storytelling to create campaigns that connect with a target audience in a more effective way. “Our work starts with the messaging,” explains co-founder Julie Firth, “as it is the foundation of everything that follows. It involves taking a deep dive into the organisation, their customers, what makes them different and how they add value to the lives of the people they exist to serve. “From there we work with them on developing a website and sales funnel (lead generating asset and email marketing) before applying the new messaging across their marketing from social media and blogs to SEO, advertising and PR. “We also run workshops to

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

help sales and marketing teams understand how they can apply this approach across their pitches and proposals, their sales calls and outreach messages – the application really is endless.” The firm’s innovative approach uses the power of storytelling to communicate value to prospective customers and persuade people with a call to action. “We tell the marketing story from the customer’s perspective rather than from the business angle,” adds Firth. “This means prospects connect with what you say more eagerly because they can see themselves and their own problems articulated in the story and are naturally curious to discover more. “The secret is to keep the ‘story' clear and compelling - not to make

it too long-winded or to pack it out with unnecessary jargon,” she adds. The method can basically be applied to any organisation and the firm has worked across many industries and non-profits around the world, more recently attracting clients in tech, pharmaceutical, legal and accountancy sectors. “The beauty of it is, if you use words to market your business, this will work for you,” says Firth. But… “We’re not about fly-by-night businesses interested in corner cutting for rapid results. That’s not to say the results from our work take a long time to emerge, because the impact can sometimes be immediate, it’s more that we do things the right way, to create the best customer experience and set firm foundations for long term success.” The firm is also looking to add workshops and one-to-one and small group coaching into its offering. “Getting half a dozen businesses into a Zoom room and taking them through their messaging as a group is so exciting. The clients have a ready made focus group to test their new messaging out on and they leave with all the tools they need to roll out their new clarified message across all areas of their marketing. “More recently we have started working on long term training partnerships with Med Tech and

Healthcare firms looking to up-skill their sales and marketing teams. We’d love to expand our work in this area and plan to build a bank of free resources (webinars/ downloads) to support these sectors.” Internal comms is another area of potential, including helping to resolve conflict and improve transition during mergers and acquisitions through workforce storytelling workshops that focus on their roles and responsibilities in a way that becomes relatable to those around them. Thus far, the firm has been so focused on client-side work its own brand marketing has been fairly low key, thanks to great word of mouth pick up. Firth says STORY22 will be developed gradually to ensure the business sustains high standards of delivery as it scales. “We want to open the tap a little at a time while we build and up-skill our team,” she explains. “When we’re confident we have everything in place to deliver at scale, we will ramp our marketing up. In the meantime, our focus is very much on marketing our business through giving back – via webinars, speaking events, networking, producing free resources and website reviews."

Over the last 10 years the product has grown exponentially and we’re proud to serve over 15,000 businesses, offering a unique product that never fails to increase web traffic from Google – all whilst making life much easier for our clients and helping them to collect reviews! The Trustist widgets allow clients to display the aggregated review count and rating score for their business, with reviews included

from all of their active review sites. This code also causes Google to display stars and the aggregated review score in the organic Google search results, which has enabled some of our clients to generate an uplift of clicks of as much as 1,000%. Typically, clients will usually see an increase of 80-100%. In early 2023, Trustist launched a revolutionary FinTech product – TrustistTransfer – which allows users to take payment from their customers quickly and with much lower transaction fees by utilising Open Banking. All a merchant has to do is enter the amount, our system then creates a QR code for

the customer to scan using their phone (or a PayLink can be sent) to start the transaction on their own device. Most traditional card merchants charge around 1.6 - 4.5% per transaction – TrustistTransfer is breaking the mould with transaction fees as low as 0.29%! At the end of 2023, TrustistTransfer integrated with Apple Pay and Google Pay, enabling customers to pay simply using their mobile phones. This is groundbreaking technology that is once again making life far easier for our clients and their customers!

PR and communications

Higginson Stategy ➔ higginsonstrategy.com

New entry to this year's EB100, Higginson Strategy has a simple enough philosophy, namely how to communicate the virtues of purpose-led businesses to the wider world Set up in 2017 by former political journalists John and Clodagh Higginson, Higginson Strategy is a communication agency for purpose-led businesses. Brands with a purpose out perform the stock market by 120% and are three times as likely to attract the highest performing employees who are 11x more likely to stay where they are. Meanwhile, purpose-led businesses have customers who are six times as likely to stand by them in the event of a misstep or public criticism and 78% of their customers are actively recommending them. As a B-Corp Higginson Strategy understands the power of purpose-

led brands and only works with them. It understands that not all purpose-led brands are B Corps and works with the leadership teams of brands and companies to get to the heart of their business. Leaning in to the purpose of organisations Higginson Strategy creates PR and behaviour change campaigns that deliver hundreds of pieces of coverage driving loyal engaged customers to its clients. Higginson Strategy’s campaigns for clients regularly win some of the biggest awards in its industry. Last year it won PRMoment Media Relations Campaign Of The Year, Not For Profit Campaign Of The

Year and Boutique Agency Of The Year. It has 18 staff across offices in London and Manchester. Brands that trust Higginson Strategy include: Airbnb, Unilever and Daysoft, as well as many smaller SMEs. Services include social media growth, engagement and management, traditional media engagement, public affairs, leadership PR, thought leadership, property PR, B2B PR, education PR, environmental PR, podcast creation, internal, stakeholder and crisis communications. With the UK telecoms market transitioning to full-fibre broadband networks, Altnets’ expert team is supporting internet service providers (ISPs) to meet their supply chain needs Altnets was established in late 2020 by Directors Paul Britnell and Sam Bangle with the aim of supporting the evolving UK telecoms market as it transitions to full-fibre broadband networks. The name 'Altnets' draws its inspiration from the industry term 'Alternative Networks’. Our mission is to assist internet service providers (ISPs) in meeting their supply chain needs, encompassing everything required to operate their network infrastructure, ranging from fibre cables, ducts, and nodes to access chambers. The core idea behind Altnets is to provide ISPs with a comprehensive solution, covering product procurement, supply

chain management, planning, forecasting, and scheduling. Our dedicated, award-winning team guides customers throughout their infrastructure build journey, helping them understand their purchases, confirming precise requirements to minimise compatibility issues, and clearly explaining expected deliveries, whether small packages or bulk orders. Altnets plays a crucial role in aiding our customers' procurement teams by proactively identifying any complexities or bottlenecks in the supply chain. This foresight builds confidence in customers, assuring them that they will receive their required products exactly

when they need them, thus avoiding potential project delays. Paul and Sam set up the business to provide a complete solution for telecoms supply chains, partnering with the UK’s leading manufacturers to reduce product delivery times and carbon emissions. It is crucial that ISPs have complete control of their inventory with the challenges the supply chain faces today. Our dynamic and adaptable business model allows us to adapt quickly and respond to changes in the industry. Recognising that each client has unique needs and requirements, our team delivers a completely

Our specially-selected logistics partners focus on environmental impact reduction, like fewer trips, shared vehicles, and low-emissions vehicles. It is not just the environment that we prioritise at Altnets. Rock Fall UK is a multi-awardwinning Safety Footwear Specialist, founded in 1997 and now a secondgeneration family run business. Developing a strong distribution base worldwide the company pro-actively collaborates with major end-users and industry associations to improve workplace safety in accordance with PPE. Since 2014, brothers Richard and Matthew Noon have moved Rock Fall UK from safety footwear specialist to being known as a company putting sustainability and market leading innovation at the forefront. Richard Noon is constantly talking about how we ‘must reshape safety footwear,’ thinking beyond the product itself and ‘considering its entire lifecycle,’ including ‘disposal.’ In his words, “Sustainability holds various definitions, but for me, it’s about contributing positively to the environment and the world at large. It’s also smart business. With 95% of customers based in

the industrial sector, working on some of largest infrastructure projects, and manufacturing plants across the Globe, environmental credentials are top of the list of tender attributes. The same companies want to know what makes us a sustainable company.” And “Product credentials are no different.” It has become their mission to revolutionise safety footwear, challenging industry norms by re-engineering safety footwear development to leave a lighter footprint on the planet. Using state-of-the-art knowledge, their approach has been to rationalise and diversify the Rock Fall product offering to provide customers with sustainable safety footwear choices. Matthew Noon talks about the development process, “We carefully considered the requirements of industry before developing safety footwear around suitability; matching requirements to industry needs in the early phases of the product development and setting a baseline such as product features and performance that reflect customers' actual needs

during concept design.” We then introduce solutions that combine science, data, with new product development, to maximise the possibilities of ‘recycling and reusing and rethinking’ the materials that can be used in industry specific, safety footwear production.” Rock Fall are the first company to introduce a range of sporty Vegan safety trainers and midcut boots, specifically designed for professionals working in the electronics industries. Verified by the Vegan Society

Rock Fall has rapidly shifted from considering how they use new environmental responsible processes and sustainably sourced raw materials, to fully incorporating ‘design-to-green’ methods into their R&D processes.

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

72

Clutton, Somerset

The Somerset Toiletry Company was established in 1999 by serial entrepreneur Roger Buoy and aromatherapy expert Sakina Buoy, who identified a gap in the market to produce beautiful, honestly priced luxury toiletries. Following the initial success of producing private label body care for other companies located in the USA and Europe, the business developed its own distribution range. Trade Fairs all over the world have been used to build brand awareness and develop valued customer relationships. Over the years the company has been recognised for many prestigious awards for business and design,

Bath & Body Goods / Home & Gift

including the Queens Award. Today, The Somerset Toiletry Company operates in over 50 global markets. Design is at the core of our business. We have an in-house design studio that is home to six designers and six artworkers. Our large team is extremely gifted and work tirelessly to create exquisite packaging design for each and every product. Our designs range from traditionally classic to humorously contemporary and consideration goes into every detail. We believe our products make a statement and are beautiful both inside and out! Our most exciting recent feat came a little over two years ago when we brought the production of our soaps into the local community in Clutton, Somerset. In the past, we had soaps manufactured in Portugal and South Africa using reliable partners. However, the COVID pandemic gave us time to evaluate our priorities moving forward. We realised that the most important things to us as a company were

sustainability and building lasting relationships both within our local community and within our customer base. We were keen to reduce our carbon footprint and develop soap on our doorstep. Not only was it important to relocate our factory to Somerset, we also wanted to ensure the ingredients were both great quality and eco-friendly. Working closely with our suppliers we selected ‘segregated palm oil’ certified by The Round Table of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) as one of our key ingredients. Therefore, the palm oil used in our soap is 100% traceable from only two locations (in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea) where there is no threat to endangered species such as orangutans, tigers and rhinos. Although there is much controversy around palm, we strongly agree with many leading conservationists and NGOs that boycotting palm is not the answer. Using alternatives simply exacerbates the problem, for example Soy requires 10 times the amount of land to produce. Within the first year of our Soap Factory doors opening, 1.4 million soap bars were produced. We have always been honest and transparent about the ingredients at the centre of our products. We use natural extracts in our products where possible. Everything we do is tested in-house as we believe strongly against animal cruelty. Each year we introduce new products and review our existing collections based on customer feedback and industry trends. As we look ahead, The Somerset Toiletry Company strives to continue to design and innovate beautiful and environmentally considered products.

Insulation

SuperFOIL ➔ superfoil.co.uk

With a top-10 finish rising star SuperFOIL continues to build its model of providing insulation solutions for residential and commercial properties 96

Like most businesses, SuperFOIL started with a problem that needed solving. Founder Craig Bown, who’d recently sold a successful healthcare firm, had thrown himself into a self-build project – but he’d quickly hit a snag. Naturally, he wanted his new home to be as comfortable, sustainable and thermally efficient as possible. That meant insulation. But none of the systems available did what he wanted them to. They were too expensive, too complicated, or couldn’t achieve the level of thermal performance he required. So he set about developing it himself. Drawing on contacts from around the world – a serial entrepreneur, Craig had previously run a national basketball team and provided loudspeakers to the Millennium Dome – he manufactured his own solution. The resulting multifoil insulation worked perfectly for his building work, and, thinking nothing more of it, he put the leftover material up for sale on eBay. It turned out to be extremely popular – so popular, in fact, that Craig decided to start a new business manufacturing it at scale. SuperFOIL was born.

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

Rapid expansion

This was 1997 – and in the 27 years since, SuperFOIL’s tried and tested multifoil insulation has been used on thousands of projects around the world. From humble beginnings in a home office, it has since expanded its team to 65 staff members, outgrown multiple buildings, and can now produce approximately 1.5 million square metres of insulation per year. Multifoil is a combination of fibre wadding and layers of aluminium foil. Essentially, the foil serves as a thermal insulator and barrier to radiant heat, reflecting the heat to ensure that warm air stays inside. It’s lightweight, and benefits from either a vapour control layer or breathable membrane, depending on the type. In simple terms, it helps protect from condensation while helping the inside to stay at a comfortable temperature, no matter what time of year it is. SuperFOIL’s multifoil insulation is made from up to 40% recycled materials, can itself be recycled, and is easy to install into the home.

Today, SuperFOIL produces a wide range of high-performance reflective insulation products suitable for use throughout residential and commercial properties. It manufactures the most extensive range of multifoil insulation products available on the market, including the world's highest performance multifoil insulation SF60 and its highly popular SF19+ multifoil. It also has a range of insulation products such as breathable, firerated, non-combustible, underfloor insulation and reflective membranes, as well as a range of bubble foil insulation products that are perfect for simple DIY projects. Exhibiting a keen understanding of the industry, SuperFOIL has positioned itself as an ecoconscious company with an innovative and forward-thinking mindset. With a special emphasis on sustainability, SuperFOIL has developed a thermally efficient insulation that is produced with low-impact methods designed to reduce emissions.

Ambitious plans

Today, the business is based in Lincoln, and run by Craig’s son, Chief Executive Officer, Will Bown. Will shares his dad’s work ethic, and his big ambitions for the future. SuperFOIL intends to become the UK’s leading supplier of reflective insulation, and establish multifoil as a mainstream insulation solution, thereby helping millions of households cut both their bills and their carbon footprints. The company has already invested £500,000 in manufacturing machinery to expand its UK production operations, and is aiming to have a fully operational high-output production line installed at its premises. It’s also in the process of investing in thermal testing facilities, which will allow it to test and develop its product on-site. In the next five years, SuperFOIL intends to ensure its future growth by continuing its transition to UKbased suppliers. This strategic shift not only reduces shipping costs but also shortens lead times, ensuring it’s able to sustain future expansion. For SuperFOIL, the insulation sector, and sustainable construction in general, the future looks bright.

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

Working with his head in the clouds de Novo Solutions’ Chief Executive, Mark Sweeny explains how the firm’s “Odyssea™” industry cloud solutions and “Value as a Service™” approach to reimagining cloud managed services are helping companies maximise their financial return on investment and achieve their strategic objectives. Mark Sweeny’s vision for the future of enterprise technology is both bold and highly pragmatic, designed to help companies make sense of the rapidly expanding array of options they are sometimes bamboozled with. To put it in ways more akin to the lingua franca of the sector, as Chief Executive of de Novo Solutions, he aims to help organisations continuously navigate the brave new world of cloud-enabled digital transformation of their operations and ensure that they constantly maximise their return on investment. It’s a tidal shift Sweeny has seen coming since his early days over a decade ago as a pioneer deploying Oracle’s Cloud suite across Europe. “de Novo creates industryspecific cloud solutions using Oracle Cloud and ServiceNow technology to deliver data-driven, personalised digital experiences over standardised business processes, providing organisations with valuable insights into their

100

customers and employees. Welcome to the experience economy.” Sweeny explains. His answer traces the evolution of enterprise software from the first wave of cloud applications that simply replicated existing systems in new delivery models using standardised business processes to the current explosion of highly configurable, personalised digital processes that break down the siloed business functions within an organisation, all built upon integrated back-end data. “Cloud has now evolved to the point where you can create deep end-user personalisations and digital journeys (workflows), thereby reflecting the way users actually work for any given industry from a digital perspective, bridging the constraints of functional siloed business operations”. He believes the next evolution is “self-configuring” industry cloud systems that understand individual employees’ roles and preferences in a given industry to deliver hyper-personalised experiences within standardised company workflows that reflect how a specific organisation works. It probably is the ultimate use of artificial intelligence in this field and will profoundly disrupt the systems integrator landscape.

Value as a Service™

Rapid-fire innovations from vendors like Oracle and ServiceNow are the driving forces that allow new ways to organise work. With technical change accelerating rapidly, however, he believes the implementation challenge lies in helping clients “adopt and consume” such advances. That’s where the de Novo’s value proposition comes in. Unlike typical IT services firms that are narrowly focused on just implementing software and then disappearing, de Novo’s “Value as a Service™” is a long-term partnership approach that emphasises understanding an organisation’s strategic goals and continually being able to pair the right innovations as they are delivered by the vendor platforms over the entire life of the Cloud subscription contract. “We focus on not just supporting the systems (that’s just table stakes) but collaboratively understanding the organisation’s business and mapping their goals to the innovations that are constantly being delivered by the vendor, thereby maximising ROI over the entire life of the contract” he says.

102

“From the outset we have always said, ‘if we support you, we support you, whether you have 1 incident or 100 incidents"

This perspective has resonated in the marketplace and has allowed de Novo to forge a pioneering niche as it reimagines managed services support. Sweeny explains: “Just as we did in 2011 when the founding members of the de Novo team were the leading pioneers of Oracle Cloud applications across the UK and Ireland, this time we identified early on that the industry and client expectations were evolving into a new era and we needed to take advantage of the technology innovations to deliver industry cloud solutions”. While legacy integrators concentrate on implementing vendor platforms in isolation, de Novo looks to deliver industryspecific end-to-end solutions for customers and employees alike. Today, de Novo is currently the only UK SME that has a combined delivery and support capability across both Oracle and ServiceNow platforms. This

combined capability helps the firm create industry cloud solutions or blueprints, called “Odyssea™” for entire industries, and they have already specialised in Central Government, Local Government and their largest growth area – Secondary Education – MultiAcademy Trusts. By commoditising Oracle implementations this way, de Novo aims to set the standard for the sector. Measuring business metrics

Making clients’ cloud investments pay off remains an uphill battle, however. Research says that through 2025, 85% of cloud

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

application projects will fail to meet return objectives due to organisations not adequately using technology and functionality already paid for. de Novo tackles this through its Value as a Service™ approach. Rather than limiting incidents or charging extra fees, de Novo consultants proactively monitor system usage and business metrics. It’s continuous improvement in action. “From the outset we have always said, ‘if we support you, we support you, whether you have 1 incident or 100 incidents, we don’t install a commercial cap that often results

in a series of unwanted change requests and higher unforeseen costs”. “We look to advance your implementations of Oracle and ServiceNow platforms by mapping your business goals and objectives against a productivity equation comprising of a series of measures against adoption, innovation, optimisation, and efficiency,” Sweeny says. The goal is to systematically optimise configurations as new functionalities emerge that can advance strategic programmes. For example, de Novo is now piloting audits of Oracle’s constant

cloud updates using AI to match feature enhancements to each client’s unique objectives. “Understanding how we can use ServiceNow’s platform and adaptive AI to maximise a client’s investment in Oracle Cloud by systematically analysing and delivering insight into the thousands of innovations in functionality delivered through Oracle’s evergreen quarterly patching cycle. This helps to determine which ones should be deployed and why to a client’s instance,” Sweeny explains. It’s this kind of proactive consulting, driven by both domain expertise and emerging technology, and a commitment to delivery excellence that is embedded into the DNA of the organisation that Sweeny believes sets de Novo apart in a crowded competitive field. While keeping pace with AI and other advances remains a challenge, Sweeny is focused on cementing de Novo’s position in the UK and expanding its apprenticeship and graduate programmes to tackle the digital skills shortage and to ensure the company has a sustainable talent pipeline of its own.

Furniturebox ➔ furniturebox.co.uk

With another top-5 finish online furniture company, Furniturebox, continues to go from strength to strength, broadening its appeal across multiple selling channels

108

Furniturebox is an online furniture company launched in 2015 by two friends from school, Monty George and Dan Beckles, at the age of just 17. What started as an eBay business has now branched out into multiple selling channels including their own website, The Range, B&Q, Amazon, Wayfair EU and US, Robert Dyas and Debenhams. Monty started his first business at the age of 7 selling bread to his local bakery! That was soon followed by selling a huge variety of products on eBay including quad bikes, tech, fashion, pest control and much more. Monty saw a huge opportunity in the online furniture sector and asked Dan to put his plans for University on pause to join him in launching Furniturebox. After an incredible first year of sales and a lot of hard work, the pair haven’t looked back! The quality products are backed up by exceptional customer service with free next day delivery when you order before 8pm, which is industry leading for large items. Dan said: "Getting the late delivery cut-off has been in our sights for a while and to finally achieve this

Monty said: “We want to grow the business but maintain that high level of service so we closely monitor our Trustpilot rating as an indicator of our success.” The brand recently moved to a brand new custom built warehouse in Chippenham with 5x their previous capacity, which will enable considerable expansion of product categories and designs. The in house product development team keep a keen eye on trends and ensure popular designs are brought in so all customers can get that designer look at a fraction of the price. Furniturebox specialises in furniture for all rooms of the home and garden including dining sets, sofas, beds, mirrors, lighting, living room furniture, garden sets and more. The expansion of product collections in 2023 is a big part of the brand’s continued growth plans.

Whilst Furniturebox puts the customer first, the two Founders are also focused on building a sustainable business which cares for the environment and gives back more than it takes. For several years now they have offset carbon emissions by 110% and invested in green initiatives. Customer returns are donated to a local Wiltshire charity called KFR who support the community with affordable second hand furniture and helping those in crisis furnish their homes. Dan said: “Working with charities like KFR reduces furniture going to landfill whilst also doing good locally which is really key for us.” After considerable growth during and after the pandemic, the team look forward to some exciting plans and projects in 2024 to continue growing and becoming a big brand in the online furniture industry.

Home energy tech

When we founded myenergi, we didn’t have a big team, a stateof-the-art facility or a global distribution network. What we did have, however, was a burning passion for innovation, a drive to create a better future and a real belief in what we were trying to achieve. After all, as society transitions away from fossil fuels and towards the zero-carbon world of tomorrow, our ambition was to make sustainable living simple and achievable. We wanted to make a difference, to challenge convention and leave the planet in a better place than how we found it. While the incredible growth of myenergi has been widely publicised, this wasn’t a Silicon Valley fairytale dreamt up in a shiny glass city-centre skyscraper. In reality, the idea for the business came from a conversation over a bottle of wine.

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

Co-founders Lee Sutton and Jordan Brompton couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a product on the market that allowed users to make the most of the solar PV panels installed on their roof. They didn’t have the money to undertake extensive market research, or spend millions of dollars on focus groups, so just went on Google. Having failed to find any competitor products past the end of page two, they came to the conclusion that no-one else was trying to solve the problem. It seemed like an unexplored market opportunity, so Lee and Jordan took a leap of faith, remortgaged their family homes and invested their life savings into what was – in all honesty – an idea based on gut feel alone. As a self-funded start-up, however, finances were tight. Really tight. The first product prototype took almost a year to develop and, by this point, the money had all but run out. To keep the dream alive, Jordan led a crowdfunding round online. The business was targeting £40,000 but raised just £10,000. A few people seemed to like the idea, but most didn’t believe in the mass market appeal. The turning point came when Jordan met TV personality Robert Llewellyn at a trade event on the

Orkney Islands. He had just started a new channel on YouTube – Fully Charged – and was captivated by what myenergi was trying to achieve. He filmed a special episode and, from that day forward, the phone began to ring. Lee and Jordan soon attracted the attention of investors, who really understood what the pair were trying to achieve. Inspired by their determination, passion, enthusiasm and commitment to change, funds were provided to help take the business to the next level. Since then, myenergi has grown from a small team manufacturing products by hand and shipping them to customers through the local Post Office, to one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech firms operating subsidiaries all over the world. Recently, myenergi surpassed its 600,000 units

shipped milestone – with happy customers using myenergi tech to decarbonise their homes all over the globe. While myenergi is probably best known for its zappi EV charger, the business also manufactures several other innovative products, including eddi, a clever device that diverts surplus renewable energy to domestic heating systems; harvi, an energy monitoring wireless sensor that allows products to be installed without wiring a direct CT clamp; and libbi, a smart home battery solution. Each product is designed with a commitment to circularity and a vision of sustainability for generations to come. Indeed, myenergi aims to provide the technologies to make eco-smart home management simple and achievable, thus accelerating the societal transition away from fossil fuels and towards the zero-carbon world of tomorrow. The five-year goal is to become the go-to household name for innovative, pioneering eco-smart technologies – used, respected and trusted by homeowners worldwide. The strategy to achieve this ambition is to build a strong foundation, in preparation to further expand internationally, with a major focus on the opportunities presented by the US marketplace.

Cotswold Fayre ➔ cotswold-fayre.co.uk

Having topped the EB100 rankings list in 2023, Cotswold Fayre - the leading wholesaler of speciality foods to UK independent food retailers finishes a more than respectable number 2 this year Cotswold Fayre launched in the late nineties when Paul Hargreaves was made aware of the challenges of independent retailers sourcing the growing range and variety of British speciality food and drink. Huge amounts of time were wasted buying products from too many suppliers and there was a clear need for a ‘one order, one delivery, one invoice’ solution which would significantly reduce the administrative burden of these new growing stores and enable them to stock a much wider range of interesting artisanal food products. Cotswold Fayre was born, that need remains and twenty-four years later

112

the company supplies over 2,000 food retailers across the UK with over 4,000 products. The business model of consolidating numerous small brands is already significantly carbon reducing, and this is one of the main factors motivating Cotswold Fayre to drive their growth further. In addition, the business has a clear carbon reduction plan to reach net zero by 2030; until then they will offset all their carbon, as well as encouraging their 500 suppliers to follow suit. Cotswold Fayre is now the leading wholesaler of speciality foods to independent food retailers in the

UK – the company supplies most of the best food stores in the UK and attracts many of the best new food brands to work in collaboration with them. Customers are made up of farm shops, delicatessens, garden centres, food halls, high street shops and a small amount of mainstream retail. Partly due to the company’s impact for the past two decades raising the bar on quality food, consumers all over the UK are buying and eating better quality food now than when the company was founded in 1999. Over the past two years the company’s growth has been spectacular as retailers consolidate

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

more and a higher number of consumers shop for better food more locally. This trend accelerated during the Covid pandemic and Cotswold Fayre was a vital link for many local retailers during that time keeping them stocked up with food when other supply chains were breaking down. Cotswold Fayre’s impact and influence on their suppliers has started to change the face of the wider food and drink sector. The business was one of the first UK companies to be certified as a B Corp in 2015. B Corps are companies putting people and planet before profit and is the fastest growing business movement throughout the world. Since certifying, Cotswold Fayre has actively encouraged suppliers to become better for the world and

they run an accelerator programme to help more businesses to become more environmentally and socially responsible. As of January 2024, the wholesaler is proud to have 60 suppliers now also certified as B Corps – more than the total UK B Corp community in 2015. Having supplied the best food retailers in the UK for over 20 years, in 2019 the business had the opportunity to develop their own retail and hospitality site. Flourish, situated between Bristol and Bath, finally opened in June 2021 and is a great example of vertical integration. Flourish has been a huge asset for the company and Cotswold Fayre’s social and environmental values are more clearly expressed in a consumerfacing business. Flourish has increased the gravitas of the

business with their B2B customers and is an exemplar of good practice as well as providing a live showcase for many of the company’s brands. Future plans include growing the influence and range of the wholesale business with the addition of the home & lifestyle category and there are plans to have two further retail sites in the next few years. Consumers are demanding more sustainable products and retailers are realising that stocking a better for the planet range is better for business, however time and resource is finite - that’s where Cotswold Fayre can help, as an extension of your business. They will use data and experience to curate a more sustainable range and encourage connections with producers for sampling and education in-store that will delight consumers. As the leading wholesaler in sustainability, Cotswold Fayre’s reputation is one of transparency and trust.

Wellbeing and Employee Benefits Provider

Here at Vivup, we are what we sell. With our first-place ranking in the 2024 Elite Business 100 list, we’re proud to be recognised for our growth, ambition, innovation, people contributions, and unwavering support to our colleagues and clients. Founded in 2005, we are a leading UK employee benefit company who provide health and wellbeing solutions to over 2.5 million employees - helping organisations build resilient and engaged workforces, retain talent, and make staff feel more valued. We place more emphasis on understanding businesses’ staff through worthwhile benefits to help leaders and business owners create a culture of physical, financial and mental wellbeing amongst their workforces.

ELITE BUSINESS 100 - 2024

We offer a range of wellbeing and employee benefits to both public and private organisations and, in early 2022, we launched a package specifically designed to support SMEs. As an SME ourselves, we believe the time is right for us to share this same support more widely. Most SMEs don’t think they can get access to the type of benefits we offer at a reasonable price – we’ve been on that journey, and we know it’s important to be really in control of the costs. Now, employee wellbeing is something that even busy SMEs can prioritise with our employee benefits packages. The cost of stress-related absence is staggering to all business sizes, which is why wellbeing should be at the heart of every solution. Statistics tell us that almost four in five workers took a stress-related absence last year, with employers picking up the associated costs and other colleagues picking up the slack. Typically, SMEs are run by people who get their heads down and do their best. Managers need to understand what is really happening within their organisations and should recognise when problems are taking shape.

Such information enables an employer to put policies in place that encourage better employee wellbeing, as well as benchmark their own company’s performance and competitiveness against industry-average metrics also provided by Vivup’s technology and data. Our all-encompassing range of benefits include:

• Our market leading Wellbeing

and Employee Assistance Programme provides expert support when your people need it most. With a 24/7 telephone helpline and access to faceto-face counselling, staff can proactively tackle whatever issue they are facing. Our wellbeing SME package also includes access to an online GP service, connecting your people to virtual consultations at a time and place that works for them. • Vivup highfive, our app-based Recognition and Reward solution, helps to boost morale and company culture via peer-to-peer rewards and acknowledgements. • Lifestyle Savings provides employees with access to 100s of

discounts from the UK’s leading retailers - enabling them to enjoy an annual average saving of up to £1,600. • Health Cash Plan helps staff cover the cost of essential healthcare. • A range of Payroll Pay® salary sacrifice benefits help employees spread the cost of big purchases through monthly salary reductions, with no credit checks or upfront charges. This includes popular benefits like Home and Electronics, Cycle to Work, and Car Benefit. From financial support and savings to help manage the costof-living crunch to simple solutions that establish a culture of continuous recognition, our meaningful benefits focus on the things that really matter by enriching the lives of staff in and out of the workplace. workplace wellbeing Simon Moyle brings over 20 years of corporate experience to his role as CEO of Vivup, a workplace wellbeing and benefits provider and now top of the EB 100 This recent win sits alongside Vivup’s existing accolades as UK Leader of the Year 2022 at the Investors in People Awards and Scale up Entrepreneur of the Year at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards in 2023. Initially a client while he was part of the team at Currys, he forged a strong connection with Vivup's founders and saw potential for growth by applying his expertise. "It was working with the founders of Vivup and other SMEs via my teams that I decided I wanted a change," Moyle explains regarding his career shift. "I could see my transferable skills were ideal and that the impact I could have within an SME was far greater." After taking redundancy, he began consulting for SMEs, but soon found himself fully invested in expanding Vivup’s operations. "I loved the business, the team, and the clients and I agreed to take

over the business full time.” Moyle is driven by a personal philosophy rooted in adding value and empowering his team. He says, “My values and beliefs drive everything that I do. I can only work if I am truly adding value, I am enjoying myself, and if my team are able to grow personally and professionally through fair treatment." Moyle wants to cultivate an environment where people treat the business as their own and make decisions focused on long-term growth. He also prioritises the ethical treatment of colleagues and clients, believing that "With those principles, you can’t go wrong." Employee Assistance Programmes

Anticipating a growing spotlight on workplace wellbeing, Vivup established its Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) service back in 2018.

"We are so proud of the work we have done to raise the standards in this space"

120

"We are so proud of the work we have done to raise the standards in this space," Moyle comments. He set about differentiating Vivup through high-quality, holistic solutions delivering real returns not tick-box offerings. He expects further growth as employers recognise the need for support services like Vivup. While increased attention breeds competition, Moyle sees the market bifurcating between purposebuilt partnerships and piecemeal solutions. "We can see more and more SMEs are entering the market to find solutions that have traditionally been out of their reach due to price

point. Solutions like Vivup use the scale across larger clients to allow smaller SMEs to ‘punch above their weight’ and offer great benefits for a fixed monthly fee that adds value for money." He believes consolidation towards single providers will also continue among large corporations seeking simplicity and engagement. Across the board, Moyle anticipates 3040% annual growth for Vivup's specialised partnership-focused model. This strategy of collaborating with top players in every specialty - from physical to mental health - creates a modular product adaptable to evolving needs.

“We know that others do some things better than us, so we partner with them so that our overall solution is built on the foundation of everyone doing what they do best. This allows us to focus our time and money in areas that will make a difference.” Combined with Vivup's commitment to continuous improvement, this approach enables responsive innovation designed to benefit clients and employees. While many companies scrambled to adjust policies during the pandemic, Vivup's remotefirst foundation provided a key advantage.

"For businesses like Vivup who have embraced the new normal and run 100% remote, it gives us a talent pool throughout the UK and beyond for some roles. We can recruit the best person for the role regardless of location, disability, or economic background." Moyle sees flexible and inclusive work environments becoming the norm, with more employers needing to facilitate work-life balance and accessibility to secure top talent. All Grown Up

So where is Vivup headed? Moyle characterises the company as just entering adulthood after a period of rapid maturation. "I describe the business in terms of a lifecycle. I joined a great business that had got through its formative years, and I took us through the disruptive teenage years where everything was challenged and a path was

forged for the future. We have just completed our university years, so we have the professionalism needed to grow." With a clear vision and ethos established, Vivup is positioned for both organic and acquisition-based expansion and Moyle anticipates the company soon entering a purple patch. "The next few years will see the business grow organically and inorganically via M&A as we reach a wider audience across more categories. In the lifecycle, this is Vivup getting married and having children – and I can’t wait!”
