DENALI RESEARCH BASE Located in the Alaskan Range, U.S.A.
What happens when the Earth reaches its carrying capacity? When the polar ice caps melt? What happens when we eventually destroy our planet through pollution or other means? One possible solution is for us to become an interplanetary species. My research base on the Denali Mountain in the Alaskan range will focus us helping us reach this goal with the use of studying air pressure as an extreme environment. As altitude rises, air pressure drops. Human beings are very sensitive to breathing at different elevations. The Denali Research Base has labs that will focus on how humans sleep at different altitudes where the oxygen becomes less dense as the elevations change, while also studying how plants grow under different altitudes and cooler conditions than they are normally found in. Using a system of pressurized tubes and airlocks the researchers and test subjects can efficiently get to different areas of manufactured or natural pressure areas that exists at such high altitudes like on the Denali mountain in the Alaskan Range. Using the climbing philosophy of “climb high and sleep low� I organized the researchers to sleep at the lowest point of the site while they complete research efforts at higher points. The labs in the research base go from an elevation of 10,000 feet which is the actually elevation of the research center on the south side of the mountain to a manufactured 25,000 feet. The actual mountain height is 20,310 feet. The reason for studying these different pressures is to look at how humans and plants react to lesser amounts of oxygen and light and simulate a similar environment to having to sleep and grow on somewhere like Mars, which is our closest possible and most obtainable neighbor in the near future.

BARCELONA STUDY ABROAD Studying abroad in Barcelona was an incredible experience in which I have learned a tremendous amount about architecture and the society at the same time.

BARCELONA, SPAIN Spain is filled with many beautiful cloisters and public spaces in which a center space is protected by buildings and the outdoor space becomes a central part in the city fabric.
THE CUTTING EDGE LIBRARY Designing a building on a corner in a city can be an exiting opportunity for many reasons. On the corner there is more opportunity for windows, there is more or a chance the visitors will be able to see the building from multiple street locations, and the building not only has one front facing facade but multiple. Inspired by Casa Planells in Barcelona and the Aqua Tower in Chicago I designed this library seamlessly into the city fabric of Barcelona Spain while still making it an exciting attraction for visitors in the city who may be near by. The library is not only curved on the exterior, but the interior as well. Many of the book cases mimic the curves on the exterior and provide visitors with different types of reading spaces by having the book cases surround them or open the visitor up to more spaces on different levels.

GREECE SKETCHES ON SITE Greece, the place that started it all. The part of the world that really started to pass along knowledge as we know it, and took the time to create designs in their art and architecture through clay pottery and marble masterpieces. When I was a sophomore in college studying Architecture and minoring in Art and Design, one class that covered multiple course credits, was an archeology class I took that helped me learn about the stores behind the friezes in the ancient temples. Greece quickly become one of the first places I wanted to visit when I studied abroad for 9 months my senior year. Being able to experience these ancient temples first hand helped me understand the importance of preservation in design and craftsmanship.
DELPHI, GREECE
While spending a week in Greek I ventured off into some of the other archaeological important sites. Cities included Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Delphi.
ATHENS, GREECE
Going to Greece as an architecture student was an euphoric experience. To see the temples that I have learned about for years was very fulfilling. The Greeks ability to create the massive perfect temples, theaters, and many more monuments that they did have at the time is very impressive.
LA BĂ“VEDA
In this project, we were asked to create a restaurant that not only satisfied the needs of everyday customers, but specifically satisfied the needs of the college students using the library behind the restaurant as well. To do this we created two eating spacing in our building. The space to the left is a cafeteria style dinning space were students can come in and grab food quickly so they can continue with their studies. The space to the right of the restaurant is a double height space with a bar on the upper level and an even nicer dining area on the lower level that opens to the outside eating area contained in the original brick wall enclosure with the original chimney. The main entrance allows customers to choose which area they want to eat in. The entrance also uses a deck to connect to the door of the library and allow students easy access to the restaurant.
SITE PLAN *** NOTE: This projected was created as a group in my studio course in Barcelona Spain. Group members included Elise Skulte (myself), Christine Turek (another American student), and FĂŠlix Trallero (a Spanish student). We all worked together to come up with the best design solution for the project that included ideas from each of us. In the final production stages I took it upon myself to create the 3D model, renderings, diagrams, and section perspective. All of us helped in the overall design, parts of line drawings, and the physical model.

ROOF: The light blue shows the top layer of the roof that goes over the parts of the building that need insulation. The white portion of the roof hangs over the exterior parts.

STRUCTURAL BEAMS AND COLUMNS: The entire building is laid out with a grid of beams and columns.
GROUND LEVEL: The portion of the building located on the right is the cafeteria style eating area for students. While the portion on the left is a partial 2 story space that is a more formal eating area.
LOWER LEVEL: The lower level is where the kitchen is located. The interior staircases and dumbwaiters allow the employees to transfer food easily from the lower level to the upper level.
10 + COUNTRIES VISITED With my study abroad experience I was able to visit buildings buy architectural and artistic celebrities and really decide weather or not the buildings and works were as good as everyone tells me they are.
THE HANGING MARKET ***UIUC - EARL PRIZE RUNNER UP
When visiting a farmer’s market anyone can buy or sell all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables. They can purchase vegetables that grow in the dirt, on trees, or plants that grow by hanging. The Hanging Market accommodates not only fruits and vegetables that grow on the ground and are handpicked, but uniquely accommodates items that are grown or sold hung up. The markets beautiful basket structure that hangs in the middle of the market allows vendors to hang any objects they want to sell hung up. This provides more space for the vendors to sell, and creates a beautiful hanging garden in the center of the market. In the off times of year when the market is not in use the basket structure doubles as a place to hang things off of and as a lit up chandelier with embedded lights that light up the night. This space then turns from a market and into a spectacular venue for banquets, large parties, wedding receptions, and more. With the movable market stalls the market can also accommodate craft sellers on the off times of year just as well. The market serves the city of Champaign by bringing an elegance to its farmer’s market that visitors will come from miles to purchase fresh plants from, and will continue to bring in money to the city with people renting out the large space for their custom events. The Hanging Market will be the addition downtown Champaign needs to put itself back on the map and into the spotlight.

SITE ANALYSIS to building plans To do the site analysis I first went to downtown champaign to view the site. I took a bunch of photographs of the site to go back to when I needed to make sure where other buildings and walkways were located. Below is the panorama college of the site, a site plan, a floor plan for the Hanging Market with the surrounding areas, and an axonometic of the market place with the existing environment.

The Hanging Market in use during the late spring, summer, and early fall months of the year. Here the basket can be used for all of the vendors to sell their amazing produce and plants.
Here the Hanging Market is in use during the colder months of the year. The visitors can enjoy the light of the beautiful hanging basket in the middle of the market place downtown.
ARTWORK Many of my artistic works focus on problems in society or fears that we all face. Through creating these challenges in my work I have learned to cope with the anxiety they bring me and I hope that from my works others can learn from them or be moved by them as well.

Our hearts our broken by love ones, but they are often not the only one to blame.
