HYDE PARK, LONDON

615 ACRES

Hyde Park is a major Royal Park and the largest park in Central London. The park was established in 1536 and opened to the public in 1637. Signage in the park is minimal, but near busy areas on the perimeter of the park and places that need additional guidance for visitors.

ARROW SIGNS

Additional signs around the park and the city point to popular attractions that people want to go to.

4

Tower Grove Park Signage Survey

PARK MAP AND INFO IN SIGNAGE FORMAT

The front of the sign always shows the park, while the back gives info on the park. The sign is generally located near larger street entrances or on the perimeter of the park. Below marks a few locations of the signs. Many are right behind the entrance gates, and not visible from street views.

GRAND ENTRANCE

GREENWICH PARK,

LONDON

183 ACRES

(Most similar of the Royal Parks to Tower Grove Park which is 289 acres.)

Greenwich park is another major Royal Park in South-East London. Near the park a visitor can get great views of the River Thames, while in the park tourist can get great views of the city from the Royal Observatory. The Royal Observatory is a particular point of interest in the park that additional signage points guides a person to. Maps and directional single post text arrows are placed on the main corner intersections of the park, as well as in the center of the park near the observatory.

SINGLE POST WORD SIGNS Additional signs around the park and the city point to popular attractions that people want to go visit.

SIGNAGE TO SPECIFIC LOCATION

Additional maps and signs near the Queens House lead people toward the Observatory, a place of specific interest for visitors. Signs are connected onto the fence instead of constructed posts.

ENGLISH GARDEN, MUNICH 910 ACRES

(Comparable in size to Forest Park in St. Louis.)

The English Garden is within the top 200 largest world Urban Parks. A park this size needs many maps near the edges. The overhead perspective of the park below is of the middle portion of the park. Much similar to the maps, the entire park could not fit on a singular page spread.

SIGNAGE TO SPECIFIC LOCATION

Instead of placing an additional sign for rest rooms the designers took advantage of the originally signage and placed an arrow above to make it easier for tourists to find their way to the toilets.

6

Tower Grove Park Signage Survey

PARK MAP SIGNAGE

The entire park map of the English Garden is divided into two signs. When I park gets to around this size it is very easy to get lost so a lot of detail is needed and the larger the scale they can have it the better. The signs are either placed next to each other or front and back.

PARK GUELL, BARCELONA

45 ACRES

(About half of the size of the Missouri Botanical Garden.)

Park Guell was designed by Antoni Goudi and has achieved a boost in tourism and renovations over the years. The increased number of tourist has changed much of Barcelona and has demanded the need for signage, even in such a small park.

ORIGINAL LARGE MAP AND ARROWS

The permanent large map on the side entrance near the metro is most likely only in Catalan and Spanish, and is very two-dimensional. This map may be a little harder for tourist who do not speak the language or know the general area.

LARGE MAP SIGN WITH PARK INFO

A larger map was added to the side entrance of the park. This entrance is near the main road and the metro stop that many tourist use to get to the park. This map is similar to many tourist map that include a large axon drawing with info.

SIGNAGE AT ACTUAL FRONT OF PARK

A permanent map is positioned at the main entrance to the park. This map is right in front of the two small buildings that house a gift shop and rest rooms, and are in front of the grand staircase

FOREST PARK WAYFINDING SYSTEM St. Louis, Missouri

Forest Park is the largest Urban Park in St. Louis, the 75th largest urban park in the Unites States, and the 124th largest urban park in the world. While Tower Grove is the 2nd largest Urban Park in St. Louis and Forest Park is about four times the size. By looking at the design of Forest Park’s way finding system from 2013 we can get a good idea of the types of signs Tower Grove Park could need. We get the chance to understand what went wrong with this sign system, and can improve for Tower Grove Park. Considering Tower Grove Park is much smaller it will need far less signs, but either way Forest Park is still a great precedent. To the right the newest version of the map can be seen. This version online has many of the updates in the community that the physical signs do not have, but maybe should not have in order to remain timeless.

Trail Map

Low Cost Estimate: $1,237

FOREST PARK WAYFINDING SYSTEM St. Louis, Missouri

Problems that have been notice: Project completed in 2013 - The Green Banners Fade much more easily than any other color. - The wheels and heels does not work as people with babies need to use the wheels path as well. -Scooter parking needs to be addessed. -The paths need to address cars coming to visit but the idea to promot the use for bikes and walkers is kept in mind. -Concrete footings need to be above the grass, otherwise the mowing crew is known to run into the signs. (City mowing crew.) Corbin Design and Local Contractor - Make sure to say the direction in the construction documents, because many of the signs were originally installed backwards and did not lead anyone in the correct direction.

Additional Signs in park added after preliminary January 2013 design: GREEN??? Here you can see that the original light green and forest green colored banners are now more a light yellow and light brown color after only 6 years.

Sign to warn bikers of up coming traffic

Signs like this often exhibit in parks and are similar to museum text that talk history.

Light Post Banner

Lowest Cost Estimate (Banner Only): $306 Note: This Green Fades much quicker than the other banner color options.

ENTRANCE SIGNS Only a couple of these signs would have been made and considering it is such a large park with many entrances they may not be seen often.

ARROW SIGNS

Additional signs around the Garden lead people to the main entrance from different sides of the 79 acre garden.

Smaller signs around the garden let visitors know the tree and plant species types.

Similar to the design of many museum, each point of interest in the park has it own sign so that the visitors can learn about the exhibit.

10

Tower Grove Park Signage Survey

Banners on Lamp posts let everyone know that they are in the SHAW neighborhood area.

Donor plaques around the park are generally imbedded into the ground, and are often raised about a foot in order to be visible.

Arrow signs are seen all over to point people in the correct direction. If a visitor follows arrow signs they may never need the map.

This entrance sign is for the administration building and it is not to be confused with the public entrance of the park.

Similar to traditional parks, the botanical garden has a map with labels of every exhibit you could want to go to.

HISTORICAL SIGN

People are entreged by the history of places. Signs that tell people the story of the area can help people feel connected to the place.

BRIEF HISTORY OF TOWER GROVE PARK Henry Shaw was a modern-day designer that happened to be born in Sheffield, England, in 1800. He made is fortune from trading in St. Louis, and then decided he was secure enough financially to get out of the business world and go experience the world. He went back to Europe and spent 2 years traveling around. He came back to St. Louis in mid-1846 to share what he had learned with the St. Louis community. Coming back to St. Louis he stared gardening. His botanical garden was a work of art at his country estate. He named the estate “Tower Grove” after the oak and sassafras trees he had found on the otherwise treeless prairie in front of it. Tower grove was open to the public in 1859. Though, it was not until October 20, 1868, that Shaw formally deeded a tract of 276.76 acres to the city. Henry Shaw helped outline much of the design in the park today and would not sign over the land to the park unless St. Louis had a plan to maintain the park after he was gone. One of Shaw’s Design choices that did not get implemented is the 200 ft strip of houses that would run the whole way around the park. This strip is still that was never implemented is still marked today by concrete columns that stand 200 ft back from many of the park gates. The only house constructed at the time of this would be the parks superintendents house were the park director lived for many years but does not today. A second house was constructed in 1910 at 4548 Magnolia Ave. and was acquired by the park in 1926. Regarding the Architecture in the park, George I. Barnett designed the plant houses and the South Gate lodge which is currently home to ArtScope. According to the National Register of Historic places nomination form most of the structures were designed by much lesser known architects of Francis Tunica, Eugene L. Greenleaf, and Henry Thiele. It is theorized that much of the oriental flavor in many of the park pavilions is in regard to the Chinese origins of much of parks design. The fact that so much of the architecture has survived in the park today is truly a testament to the amount of respect the community has held for the park over the decades. Tower Grove Park, more or less how we know it, officially opened to the public on September 28th, 1872. Some additional structures and amenities have been added to the park over time. Amenities such as bathrooms, lights for the later hours, and signage in 1997 to identify some of the pavilion structures. Now signage is needed today to help people find where they need to go with all the different events happening in the community at the park. 12

Tower Grove Park

Existing Signage Survey Summary report Survey Summary report Total Number of signs = 107 Every sign in and around the edges of the park is documented in this signage survey. The signs are divided into four categories: Yellow, Green, Light Blue, and Dark Blue. Yellow indicates pavilion, building, or picnic signage. Green indicates other types of signage that did not have enough for one category. Light blue stands for donor signage, and dark blue stands for vehicular signage. The yellow category of signs is the smallest and the dark blue is the largest.

Yellow Signs = Building, Pavilion, and Picnic Area Signs Total Number of signs in the yellow category = 19 The signs highlighted with yellow are the most professional looking signs in the park. Most of them were designed by HOK / Studio E in 1997. Many of the signs have held up over the years and are in near perfect condition, while others could benefit from minor improvements or additional signage. Notable comments on specific signs in this section. Sign 24 was not designed by HOK but was probably placed on the Roman Pavilion by the architect, Ernst C. Janssen or the patrons of the pavilion, The Gateway Foundation. Sign 24 still calls the pavilion the Pool Pavilion, where as many people and the website display the pavilion name as the Roman Pavilion. This Pavilion’s naming consistency is very important considering its center location in the park. The Sign with the most problems in this category is Sign 36, the Lily Pond Shelter sign. The Lily Pond Shelter Sign is obstructed by trees. During an informal interview conducted on June 22nd at the Tower Grove Pavilion Party, a couple informed me that they quickly became lost during their first time at the park, as they were meeting friends for a party at the Lily Pond Shelter but had no clue how to find it. Sign 44, at the Turkish Pavilion, could use a few screw replacements in the bottom so the reservation portion of the sign does not fall off. Sign 85, at the Old Playground Pavilion, is extremely far away from the pavilion compared to the rest of the pavilion signs. The sign is near the street, but it is so far away from the pavilion that visitors are sometimes confused which pavilion the sign is referring to. An additional sign near the Old Playground Pavilion where people would walk up to it could be very helpful. Signs 92 and 96 are both for the Stupp Center and were added after the original pavilion and building signs were built in 1997. They show the Tower Grove Park logo of the bandstand, which may be confusing considering that they are not pointing to the bandstand, but to the Stupp Center.

14

Tower Grove Park Signage Survey

Dark Blue: Vehicular Signs Total Number of signs in the dark blue category = 38 Many of these signs are to direct traffic around the roundabouts in the park. Most of this type of sign in the park are either “one way” or “right turn only signs” in order to keep traffic moving in one direction and keep congestion down so that everyone keeps moving. Almost all of the vehicular signs are either connected to light posts or are on steel posts. They are your traditional street signs. The speed bump signs seem to be in the best condition, and it can be assumed with the new work from the 2017 master plan that the speed bump signs are the newest. Many of the street signs have a temporary feel, being connected to the typical metal stop sign polls they often become slanted due to weather. More prominent and beautiful street signs could be useful for intersections such as Arsenal Street and Center Cross Drive. As you can see from Sign 50 there is room for improvement with the street signage. Notable comments on specifics in this section. From the wayfinding survey conducted in June 2019, 62 percent of park visitors said that they drive to the park. Knowing this, the street signs to the park could be in Victorian style to go along with the entire feeling Henry Shaw wanted to convey from the entrance to the center of the park. Sign 99, is arguably the most important sign in the park, as it is the only entrance sign and only permanent sign in the park that says Tower Grove Park on it. Additional entrance signs to each street entrance could improve the park in all directions. The 2019 wayfinding survey found that only 27 percent of visitors to the park use this entrance, while 13 percent of visitors use the Kingshighway entrance, about 20 percent of visitors enter on the Arsenal side, 20 percent of Victors enter on the Magnolia side, and the other 20 percent of visitors use lesser known entrances. (Documentation of sign 99 below.)

TGP

15

Light Blue: Donor Signage Total Number of signs in the light blue category = 25 Most of the donation signage is on the ground near the restoration that the patron helped fund, object they helped purchase, or tree that they planted. This causes many of these signs to be covered up by either fallen leaves or people sitting on benches. The fact that the signage is generally so close to the ground may not be a bad thing in the case of donors so that everyone can still enjoy their time in the park without donor signage being overwhelming. Notable comments on specific signs in this section. Sign 5, is the Entrance / Donor sign to the Bird Garden and is probably one of the largest signs in the park. If every donation sign looked like this, it would be very overwhelming. However, at the same time, this sign lets you know that you are going into an entirely different attraction to the park. Sign 27, Henry Shaw is more than just a donor of the park, he created the park. A sign dedicated to him sits in the walls of the Tennis building and is in great condition. Additional history of his gift could be added to the park.

Green: Other types of signs Total Number of signs in the green category = 25 The green category includes signs that were not numerous enough to have their own section. These signs include signs for the Robert and Martha gaddy Wild Bird Garden / Great Missouri Birding Trail, recreational signage, bike signage, Metro signage, and signage for sensitive matters such as the Columbus Statue. Notable comments on specific signs in this section. The Metro bus signage is added to this survey, as it is how a small percentage of St. Louis residents get to the park and the signs are along the parks edge. If the Metro stations signage can become more integrated with the park signage that may be able to help more people come to the park who take public transportation. Signs 18, 22, 23, 75, and 76 are all signs for the baseball / softball fields and are very helpful for residents who play games here. Not all of the fences are marked with signs, and this would be an easy improvement. Signs 30, 33, 100, and 101 are bike trail signs on the outside perimeter of the park or on Center Cross Drive, but they do not continue into other areas of the park. Signs that provide more direct recommendation paths would help bikers know where to go.

This could be due to the fact no sidewalks exist on the West side portions of the park perimeter.

QUESTION 12: Do you remember your first time in the park? If so, please describe how you got around the park? QUESTION 12 COMMENTS: 1. Yes. Probably in the 1950's. Drove in a car. 2. Walking 3. Walking 4. Yes, the first time was last year when I first moved here. I went on a run with my housemates around the park! 5. It was for a Food Truck Friday event in 2016 - I believe I used google maps to get there in a car and once in the park I followed signs for the event. 6. In 2005, driving East on Magnolia from Kingshighway going to look at a house on Hortus Court. The Park sold us. We walked in, drifted, explored. 7. Walking sort of aimlessly 8. The first time I just explored and took in the scenery. I did not use anything to get around. 9. On foot with a dog. 10. Went on a run. Ran down arsenal. Looked at Google maps before I went. 11. Drive 12. Don’t Remember 13. By Car 14. Yes, we drove there, parked and then walked around. 15. Driving 16. Using the major roads surrounding the park as a guide and hoped I was getting closer to my destination. 17. Walked there with my boyfriend when we moved to TGE neighborhood 18. I was in my car and super excited to see they had a fountain and big playground 19. The organization of the park is extremely clear. I bite through the main car Road and then bike back on this side slower pace roads. 20. I don’t 21. Followed the paths. 22. Walk 23. Longer than expected. 24. 2010: Walking 25. I don't remember specifically but I think I drove to the park and then walked around part of it, either for food truck Friday or the farmers market. 26. Driving to a pavilion (before I moved to the neighborhood!) 27. Walking for the original Pridefest at the Rock Shelter 28. I believe my first time in the park was a Food Truck Friday Event. I basically walked around aimlessly until I saw a crowd of people. 29. My first time in the park was for a Food Truck Friday. I drove, entering at the Grand entrance, and got lost with all of the one way roads and couldn't find my way to the food trucks. 30. Pride 31. We lived right by the park and we would walk or ride bikes in the park. 32. With a paper map. 33. Childhood 34. Car 35. Yes. We went to the Farmer's Market. We drove into the park, parked and walked around. 36. Walked and wandered. 37. Entered at Grand and Arsenal when walking from the CBD 38. Yes, I walked to the park from school and got around the park by walking. 39. I always enjoy walking in the park. 40. I generally would park in or close to the park and then would walk around the park. 41. Drove to the Kingshighway entrance and stayed near there, leaving accidentally drove through the entire park trying to get out. TGP

QUESTION 13: What do you think needs to be addressed most with signage in the park? QUESTION 13 COMMENTS: 1. Seems OK the way it is, except for signage describing the species of trees and plants. 2. Sometimes interior roads are open to cars and other times they are not. It can be startling when cars come by and you don’t expect them. 3. Interpretation. I don’t think wayfinding is that hard, given the ring drive, but then I know the park well. 4. Nothing. 5. Maybe a map with where the pavillions are? Maybe that already exists. 6. Maybe some permanent signage for repeating events, that point toward the area in the park they are held, like they use in Forest Park. 7. Better pointers to Landmarks? 8. Location of pavilions and landmarks 9. What is where. A detailed location of what there is to see and do. Any fun facts/information about the many buildings and pergolas. 10. Directions 11. Pavilion and building locations. Restroom locations. 12. Location 13. I often wonder what a particular plant is so I can use it at my home. 14. The signs are fine to me. 15. A map with pavilions/picnic site names. 16. Maybe just a few stations with tree, plant, insect & animal descriptions and photos are on a poster. Could have upcoming events, locations of restrooms, park map, etc. 17. Which way to various landmarks (and what are the landmarks even called)? 18. Signage seems good, except for the one way near the deer statue. 19. Mileage and destination directional signs. Internationalsigns about history, building and plants would be nice add well. 20. There isn’t enough information posted. I think the history and the trees are wonderful, but it isn’t posted. I lived in the neighborhood a year before I learned some cool facts about the park that’s only a few blocks away. I think the arbor collection is fascinating and signs near the trees would help others appreciate it too. 21. Nothing. I don’t think the park needs signage at all. One of the nice things about the park is its absence of visual pollution and abundance of natural views. 22. Nothing. 23. Directions to restrooms, Farmers Market, and major buildings/pavillions. 24. I would like more plant info. 25. Probably locations of restrooms. 26. Traffic signage needs to be improved (ex. Turning vs. Parking lanes) I would love a placard for each tree and Bush. I think there is a map somewhere... 27. Identifying the different species of trees and flowers. 28. Pavilion locations. 29. I think all entrance points should have more informational signage. 30. Where am I relative to the rest of the park? What's the best way to exit the park from where I am, based on whether I'm going east/west/north/south? 31. Directional signage to pavilions. 32. Easier to see. 33. Wayfinding of events & pavilions. Hands Down. 34. Typical wayfinding - where are the pavilions, courts, fields, entrances, exits, etc. 35. More directional signage that fits with the park. Espcially with the new plans for the park. 36. Main attractions, where motorists need to watch out for pedestrians, locations of key pavillions. 37. Directions to the major pavilions. 38. Occasional maps on walking paths similar to what Forest Park has. 39. Identifying restrooms, water-fountains, and features such as ball-fields or workout equipment. 40. overallGrove directory a prominent 44AnTower Parkin Signage Surveylocation, with minor signs to the directory and signs at each pavilion and statue.

SURVEY SUMMARY: The online survey showed that out of 73 people most people use the park for exercise, dog walking, and the farmer’s market. Visitors generally enter the park by car or walking through one of the main four entrances: Magnolia and Center Cross Drive, Arsenal and Center Cross Drive, Grand, and Kingshighway. After people arrive at the park they usually walk everywhere in the park and either use google maps or nothing at all to navigate the park. Many people would care to know more about the history of attractions at the park and would like to know about the different species of flowers and trees even more. Most participants in the survey would prefer a more historic than modern design for any additional wayfinding signage. About 20 percent of visitors to the park have gotten lost in the park. Out of the suggestions that survey participants made in regarding the signage that is needed in the park, multiple people wrote that wayfinding for pavilions and landmarks would be helpful. Many people also wanted more signage or maps for tree locations. Visitors wanted maps at all the main entrances of the park highlighting pavilions and landmarks. Considering that many people wanted a map with more tree info and only 3 out of 73 participants in the survey said that they knew about the online interactive map, more information about where to find the online interactive map in the park would be helpful. Regarding park visitors wanting maps near the entrances it is very interesting that these maps are not already in place. This is interesting since in the 1997 Signing and interpretive Master Plan they had designed a park directory for these locations. Maybe if something similar to this, with an edited printable version of the online map was on here then that would be helpful.

Tower Grove Park Signage Survey

(Current online printable park map with referrance to interactive map)

design proposal 1 The idea with this wayfinding proposal is to first get people to the park, and then get people where the need to go once they are in the park. The banners along the park edge will get people to notice the park from every direction, while the new large entrances will draw them into the park and give them a hint and the grand and historic nature of the pavilions and botanical elements inside the park. The maps inside the park and the vehicular signs will help visitors in every form of transportation get where they need to be.

ORGANIC DESIGN

SPIRAL DESIGN

PATTERN GATE DESIGN

Three designs where created for the park. All being historic is nature, due to the fact, that the public engagement survey showed that residents and visitors around the area preferred historic to modern designs for Tower Grove Park. The top most design is the Organic Design, which takes leaves from around the park and puts them into the signs. The middle design is the Spiral Design that uses romantic spirals that are similar to vines and draw inspiration from other historic gardens around the world. The Spiral and Organic Design are often paired together in a lot of the presentation materials due to the similarities. The last design is the Pattern Gate Design that is inspired by elements from the current gates around the park. 48

NOTES:

1. Font on signs: Linux Libertine Capitals. If exact text cannot be used then another serif font should be used. 2. Text should be cast with the metal of the plate and be extruded 1/4’’ from the sign face. It should then be painted white. 3. Second option for text could be to have it as an applied sticker to the metal face plate. 4. Caps to posts can be circle or star like as shown above, but should be consistent. 5. Sign faces should be attached with screws with least amount of distance away from the pole as possible. 6. Signs 4, 5, and 6 can all be used in the Spiral design. 7. Signs 4 and 5 can be used in the Pattern Gate and Spiral Design. 8. All signs can be altered to be single or double-sided.
