SCI-ARC EXTENSION
Los Angeles, CA
Fall 2024

THE PROPOSAL FOR THE EXTENSION OF SCIARC TAKES ON AN ADAPTIVE APPROACH, MAKING USE OF THE EXISTING FOOTPRINT TO EXPAND AND ADD. THE 40,000 SQFT OF EXTENSION PRIORITIZES UNPROGRAMMED INTERSTITIAL SPACES- ENCLOSING SOLELY THE NECESSARY: A NEW GALLERY SPACE FOR EXHIBITION, STUDIO SPACES AND ARCHIVAL BUILDING. MULITPLE POSSIBILITIES FOR ASSEMBLY ARE OFFERED BY THE ADAPTABILITY OF THE SYSTEMS WORKING WITH THE STRUCTURAL GRID.

CULTURAL CENTER

Spring 2024

CRITICAL SPATIAL PRACTICE. THE BEAUTY OF IMPERMANENCE. ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY ACTIVISM. MOBILITY. HONESTY IN MATERIALITY. DETAILS IN THE JOINERY. TECTONIC VERSATILITY WITHIN CONTAINERS. THE EXPLORATION OF URBAN CULTURE AS A PROCESS UNFOLDING IN A MULTIPLICITY OF SPACES, ALLOWS THE TERRAIN OF ACTION TO SHIFT TOWARDS THE MULTIFACETED DYNAMICS OF THE CONTEMPORARY CITY.

ASSEMBLAGES

HOUSING COMPLEX
12-24 units, West Adams CA Fall 2023

ONE SHARED STRUCTURE INSTEAD OF FRAGMENTED. ONE PERFORMATIVE AND OPEN ARCHITECTURE ALLOWS TO OFFER MORE UNITS AND GENEROUS PUBLIC SPACE.
URBAN INFRAESTRUCTURE THAT WORKS FOR THE CITY. LIGHT STRUCTURE THAT ACTS LIKE A “FREE TO USE” URBAN INSFRAESTRUCTURE ENRICHING THE ACTIVITY ON SITE AND ENCOURAGING ENCOUNTERS.
ADAPTIVE REUSE AND FORWARDTHINKING. THE EXISTING BUILDING ON SITE IS KEPT.
FIELD OF STRUCTURAL GRIDS THAT INDEX SPATIAL QUALITITES.
DEAL WITH HOUSING WITH HONESTY TOWARDS SOCIAL ASPECTS AND URBAN LIFE.

a light steel structure clads against the building’s suggested faces, providing facade apertures that highlight the void. Another independent layer, the roof, sits as a shed on top of the varieties of systems, unifying them with the same sky. The building can be dismantled into individual layers for reuse.
The Steel Cladding structure paints a feceless face, it voices the possibility of multiuse acting both as possible in ll space and as structural actor when it reaches the ground. Through this choice of skin, the facade as a screen that masks is challenged , rather understanding it as a membrane that reveals and provides spatial telescopes. Situated in the city, this steel cladding blends with the ordinary. From afar, the di erent thresholds can already be appreciated. Layers of common materials are revealed by what I choose to call the empty facade. Within such simplicity, the complexity of the structural details gains autonomy. Every gesture is ready to be seen. The emptyness begins with honesty and ends with rediscovery.

COLUMN CAP DETAIL
Fall 2023
in collaboration with Nicholas McIntyre

EXPRESSIVE POTENTIAL IN EVEN THAT WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE MOST ORDINARY. IN OUR PROPOSAL OF A COLUMN CAP, WE EXPLORE HOW TWO DIFFERENT MATERIAL SYSTEMS - CONCRETE AND STEEL - CAN COME TOGETHER TO MANIFEST THE CONSTRUCTIONAL LOGIC OF TECTONIC FORM AND THE SYNTACTICAL LOGIC OF GEOMETRY. OUR INTENTION FOR THIS COLUMN ARISES FROM THE URGE TO EMBRACE THE OVERLOOKED BEAUTY OF JOINERY AND TO CHALLENGE THE NOTIONS OF NONEXPRESSIVE FUNCTION WHICH ARE ATTACHED TO THE COLUMN.
