We know that English is the language of the ‘Englishspeaking World’ – the United Kingdom, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. You probably know in Canada it’s one of the two official languages, English and French, and also in Ireland, where the official languages are English and Irish. But in fact, English is the first language in many other countries too.
For example, in Africa, English is the official language in Liberia, Kenya and South Africa. In South America, it’s the o icial language in Guyana. English is also used around the world as a lingua franca, for example in Nigeria, Ghana and India. In India alone there are over one hundred
local languages! English is used as a common language to communicate in the government, business and schools.
Just think, English is an official language or lingua franca somewhere on every continent in the world! And there are millions of students, like you, that study English every day.
