Back to the Future: 2015 beyond the screen

In 1989 one of the most well-known and well-loved films in the history of cinema showed us a preview* of life in 2015, which at the time was a very distant future. But does the present really look like the one that was portrayed in the film? Read through the report and you’ll be able to find out! What does the future look like?

Back to the Future day We’re nearly there! Only a few weeks to go until 21st October 2015, the day that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) arrives at “his future”, which is our present. The star of Back to the Future, who sets off* in 1985, is accompanied by the scientist Doc Brown, the inventor of the time machine. Marty attempts to change the destiny of his future children thirty years ahead of time.

Marty is very surprised by the first scene he comes across* - strange shaped cars that speed across the skies of the city. Pure fantasy? Maybe, but not for long! Some car prototypes* “with wings” already exist. After years of tests and experimental flights, Transition, a car that transforms itself into an airplane will soon be in production. It’ll be made by the American company Terrafugia. Two foldable wings and a propeller* hidden inside the bodywork* allow it to take off like a real light aircraft*. It will reach 185 km per hour and can fly up to 800 km. It will cost about 300,000 dollars.

phrasal verbs/future forms/adjectives

A magnetic skateboard

I’ve got it in my wardrobe! One of the most famous gadgets in the film are the phenomenal Nike trainers with the self-fastening laces*. In 2011 Nike actually produced a model similar to the one worn by Marty in the film, although in a limited edition (Nike Mag). The earnings* from the sales were donated to the Michael J.Fox Foundation for research into Parkinson’s disease. But that’s not all! In the film boys and girls from the future wear special jackets that are self-regulating* and that dry themselves. All you have to do is press a button and the jacket automatically regulates itself to the right size and dries itself if it gets wet. The idea wasn’t such a far-fetched* one as there are some similar technological items* of clothing on sale today such as ones made with material that don’t get stained* or that produce energy with their movement.

6

In the film it’s called a hoverboard, and it’s a flying skateboard that Marty uses during his spectacular chases*. This is another example of one of those objects that fans of the Back to Future trilogy have been dreaming about for years. Will we ever be able to have one too? Greg and Jill Henderson from California say yes. Together with the skateboarder Tony Hawk they’ve produced the Hendo Hoverboard, a board without wheels that’s able to ‘float’ up to 3cm from the ground thanks to a system of magnets. For the moment it only works on smooth* metal surfaces that create a magnetic field that lifts it up.

From the film… to the big screen! Other predictions about the future that arrived directly from the 1980s concerned communication. There were people making phone calls with their glasses that today seems a cross between our smartphones and Google Glass, and those who used a videophone that today resembles* Skype, Facetime or other applications for exchanging photos and videos, that were only invented at the beginning of 2000. Moreover, during the conversation information about the speaker passed across the screen (date of birth, hobbies, favourite food), just like in a modern social network. And any technological device* is made to work by using vocal commands, exactly as we do today.

And the rest? We’re working on it…

CAN YOU The Back to the Future trilogy consists of three episodes that are full of adventure and twists*. Which of the three films is set in 2015? Try to match the plot to the title! Back to the Future (1985) Back to the Future – Part II (1989)

In the 2015 of the film almost everything is robotic: the petrol pumps are completely automatic (and us? We have self-service!), bars and restaurants have substituted real life waiters with TV screens that interact with the customers (that more or less is what we do with the self-service tills at the supermarket) and there’s also instant pizza: it’s a miniature pizza that is cooked in the microwave and after a few seconds it becomes a normal size. Will we be eating something similar in a few years’ time? Who knows!

Back to the Future – Part III (1990) a Doc Brown and Marty McFly travel to 2015 to change their future. But something goes wrong and the pair are forced to correct the events that happened 60 years earlier. Trying to avoid meeting ‘themselves’ from the past becomes an almost impossible feat*. b Marty McFly finds himself by chance in the past. It’s 1955 and he meets his parents, but he stops them from meeting each other. If his parents don’t fall in love then Marty won’t be born! The only person who can save him is his friend Doc Brown, who hasn’t yet invented his time machine… c Marty uses the time machine and goes to the Far West to bring back Doc who got there by mistake. But in 1885 petrol hadn’t been invented yet so the pair have to find the way to make the machine work and return to 1985. Will they do it?

The answer is on page 15.

Glossary aircraft: a machine that flies bodywork: the painted metal outer part of a car chases: following someone or something quickly because you want to catch them comes across: finds by chance device: a tool or piece of equipment earnings: money you get from doing something far-fetched: very exaggerated feat: something difficult or impressive that someone does items: usually one of several things in a group laces: a long piece of string you use to fasten your shoes

preview: the chance to see something such as a play, film or work of art before it’s shown to the public propeller: a piece of equipment used for moving a ship or airplane prototypes: the first form of something new before it’s made in a big quantity resembles: looks like self-regulating: that modifies itself according to the situation sets off: start a journey smooth: flat and even stained: with a mark on it twists: some unexpected event or information in a film or story

Long blond hair and a model’s figure* - let’s take a look together at this young, female Columbian footballer. She firmly disagrees with those that n! say football is only for me

In any field it’s important to have a role model. Who’s yours? Who do you look up to*? After Pippo Inzaghi, one of my role models is certainly Radamel Falcao, a Columbian footballer like me. Currently he plays for Manchester United. I dream of having a similar career! And then Neymar, Messi and Ronaldo.

Where does you passion for football come from? My passion for football began when I was in Milan. I lived there from the age of 6 to 9 when I was very young. I went to the stadium every Sunday to watch Milan play and I immediately fell in love. I was a fan of Filippo Inzaghi, he is one of my idols.

When you were young didn’t anyone say to you that it was a sport for boys? They still say it to me now! But less than before. I never liked dolls and my girlfriends refused to kick a ball around with me. I trained with the boys and

Well, obviously a bit of talent is needed to start with. But also the right coordination that you develop when you’re young and that improves with continuous practice. You need to have a talent but also discipline to reach a good level.

You’re very young but you’ve already shown everybody that in female football, champions like you, exist. How does this make you feel? at first it was a bit strange. They were surprised about my way of playing and eventually they let me play in their team.

Everyone is talking about your image. In your opinion is it an important aspect of your career? I consider them two separate things. Football is and will always be my life. I’ll always give 100% on the field for my team. But I also think that being a good footballer doesn’t mean having to lose my feminine side.

Has it been difficult to get so far? What have you had to give up*?

People who know me are aware* of how much I train every day – often day and night! –, and with how much sacrifice and passion I do it. I’ve reached my objectives with a lot of work, willpower* and a lot of discipline. Determination is the key to success.

I hope that I’ll never disappoint my fans and never lose my humility and values that I’ve always had. I’ll continue being myself and write my story day after day. I’ll accept all the challenges that I meet and I’ll overcome the difficulties to achieve* my dreams.

September October the north-west of England. It’s existed since 1879 and is described as ‘the greatest free light show on Earth’. It usually starts at the beginning of September and goes on for 66 days. It covers more than 10 km and more than 1 million light bulbs* are used. It’s estimated that the cost of the illuminations are £1.9 million and it takes 22 weeks for the lights to be put up and 9 weeks to take them all down! You could think that it’s a waste of electricity but nowadays only green energy is used to light up the illuminations, such as wind power, hydropower and biogas.

Heritage Open Days This is a four-day festival that takes place in September. It allows people to visit places of historical interest

Harvest Festival This is a very old British celebration and it originates from Pagan* times. The origins of this festival were to give thanks for the harvest* and the food that had been collected and stored* away for the Winter months. The festival usually takes place in September and it’s traditional for children to take food to school or to church which is then given out* to poor people. Particular songs are sung during this festival which refer to the harvest and give thanks for the crops* that have grown in the fields.

Last Night of the Proms The term ‘prom’ is short for ‘promenade concert’ which described the concerts that used to take place in the parks of London where people could listen to music while taking a walk. Nowadays, the proms describes a series of classical music concerts that take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London over a period of 8 weeks. The final night is very different from the others as the atmosphere is much less formal and the

audience can stand in the concert hall, wear costumes and take a flag with them. Different patriotic* songs are played, which the audience usually joins in with. The only downside* is that it’s very difficult to get a ticket for the last night as it’s the most popular concert of the series.

Blackpool Illuminations This is an incredible light show that takes place every year in Blackpool in

that are usually closed to the public. This celebration of English heritage first started in 1994 and also includes tours, events and activities connected to architecture and culture. The City of London holds its own event usually the weekend after the Heritage Open Days called Open House London and visitors have the opportunity to visit places that are open only once a year to the public.

Trafalgar Day This day celebrates the victory of the British navy* at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The navy was led by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (you can visit Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square that is a memorial to him). This day was first celebrated in 1896 and was characterized

by parades, dinners and other events. Nowadays celebrations take place only in certain parts of Britain, for example in Birmingham the Lord Mayor* of the city organizes a special ceremony and a garland* of flowers is placed on the statue of Nelson in the centre of the city.

Minions We got to know them (and immediately fell in love with them) in the film Despicable Me, where they were Gru’s little yellow helpers. This film tells the story of their origins, from their birth at the beginning of time. The Minions evolved* during different centuries, perpetually* at the service of ruthless* bosses, from a T-Rex to Napoleon. But when they find themselves without a leader they isolate themselves and move to icy cold Antartica and fall into deep depression. At that point, a Minion called Kevin decides to venture* into the world together with a teenager called Stuart and little Bob, looking for a new cruel boss for him and all his brothers. The trio sets off on a long journey which will lead them to Scarlet Overkill, the biggest baddie* in the world. They’ll travel long distances, passing through New York and ending up* in London where a great danger awaits them the imminent destruction of all the Minions! What will they do?

Hotel Transylvania 2 After the success of Hotel Transylvania, a Sony Pictures Animation film that came out in 2012, its sequel is now on its way. Three years ago we discovered that Dracula is not only the Prince of Darkness but is also an affectionate dad and he’s very protective of his adolescent daughter Mavis. For this reason he has opened Hotel Transylvania, where his daughter and other strange creatures (like the werewolves, the Frankenstein spouses*, the Mummy and the Invisible Man) can relax safe and sound.* However, the peace and quiet doesn’t last for very long as Mavis falls in love for the first time. In this second episode the family reunites after Vlad (Dracula’s dad) returns to the city to visit his son who he hasn’t seen for a long time. It won’t take long for him to turn everyone’s lives upside down*.

Glossary acquainted: know, be familiar with baddie: the bad person in a film or book ending up: being in a particular place as a result of doing something evolved: gradually changed and developed over a period of time perpetually: continuing all

the time principal: main, most important ruthless: cruel, bad safe and sound: in no danger spouses: husband and wife upside down: change someone’s life completely often in a negative way venture: do something that is a risk

CURIOUS FACTS Here are some curious facts linked to the three films above. Can you match them to the right film? 1. Their strange language contains words from many languages: Italian, Russian, Spanish, old English and also elements from the Japanese language. 2. Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi and Mel Brooks are the voices of the characters in the film. 3. One of the directors of the film, Pierre Coffin, gave his voice to the characters. 4. The director said: «The idea of visualizing the places of thought, memory and dreams fascinates me.».
