Goals 1 and 2

The 2030 Agenda

Let’s take a look at Goals 1 and 2 of the 2030 Agenda: End poverty and hunger

We like to have a positive approach: since 2000, the world poverty rate has declined by 50%. That’s good news, isn’t it? However, there’s still a lot to be done in the fight against poverty!

Many people in the world live below the international poverty line with 1.60 euros a day. That’s the equivalent of 47 euros a month. 47 euros to pay for housing, food, clothes…

Furthermore, the vast majority do not have access to education and health care.

When we refer to global poverty, these are just some of the issues involved.

1 Poverty is everywhere.

In the UK, approximately 22% of the population live in poverty. Here are some words related to poverty. Match the words to the definitions.

1 Eviction

2 Insecure employment

3 Aporophobia

4 Unemployment

a To have poor employment terms (low pay, no contract or social security, etc.)

b To force someone to leave a property by a legal process.

c The state of not having or being able to find a job

d Hatred or hostility towards poor or disadvantaged people.

2 Here are some statements about poverty and hunger in the world. Read and tick T (true) or F (false).

1 One in nine people do not have enough food to eat.

2 Children in Europe do not suffer from hunger.

3 One in eight adults is overweight.

4 Being poor means not having food, money or basic items of human needs.

5 66 million children go to school hungry.

6 4 billion people live without elec tricity.

7 Climate change has no impact on global poverty.

Can you imagine what it’s like to be homeless?

Throughout the world there are many homeless children who live on the streets amongst cars and traffic lights. We do not see them, we ignore them or we are scared of them. It’s very hard to imagine this situation from the comfort and safety of our homes and lives.

3 Look at the photos and write words that come to mind.

Small acts that make a big difference!

Do you think you can’t help in the fight against poverty and hunger in the world? Well, you’re wrong! Every little act makes a big difference.

5 Work in groups. Discuss with your classmates how the following acts can help reduce food waste. Then add your own ideas.

• Don’t throw away food

• Buy ‘ugly’ fruit and vegetables. They taste just as good!

• Take home leftovers from a restaurant

• Freeze food (that is not to be thrown away)

• Plan your shopping lists and meals
