Some call us a global enterprise. We call it a family business.

Innovation from the Very Start “Semper lux” – always light. When Hermann Bansbach started his company in Berlin in 1948, the city still lay in ruins, with hardly any electricity or light. Hermann Bansbach brought light into this dark time by brightening up the lives of Berliners with a simple, affordable battery charger. He believed that light had a social and cultural significance that went far beyond doing business and making a profit. That mindset is still alive today. We too experience the fascination of adding quality to people’s lives through sophisticated lighting concepts. That is how Semperlux became Selux – and how a craftman’s shop in Berlin turned into a global company with 500 employees in Europe, North America, and Australia. Today the company generates over 80 % of its revenues outside of Germany.

Continuity Through Innovation At Selux, staying true to ourselves means staying in the flow of things – the constancy of evolution. 60 years in Germany and Europe. 25 years in the USA. 20 years in France. Evolution that spans so many decades does not become a success through ad-hoc decisions; it comes from careful planning and sophisticated ideas that reflect our company’s high standards in every detail. At Home Throughout the World Think global, act local: if you want to enjoy worldwide success, you need to know and understand local markets. In Europe and overseas, we develop and produce our products for local markets as well as for the global corporate group. As partners for international project management around the world, we work in close collaboration with multi-national teams, for example with European architects, American fitters, and Asian clients.

Light by the Meter — Courtesy of Selux The original linear luminaire was made by Selux. In the 1970s, our straight-line profile lamp was a stunning innovation; for the first time, light could be sold by the meter. Whether straight-line or mitered, it is available in any length, and for any type of building. Even today we continue to perfect the philosophy of modular lighting components, for example our new M 36 series with its innovative Light Modulation Optics (LMO). It is constructed especially for LED technology, and adds a new dimension to modular lighting.

14

Our Standard: The Exceptional In colour, look, casing, and assembly techniques, Selux offers you the freedom to design. And our team of technicians, engineers and designers will be happy to provide you with competent advice. Whatever your specific lighting needs, or whether you need custom-made pole mountings or new solutions for outdoor lighting, Selux will help you to carry out even the most individual plans, effectively and economically.

15

Why modular systems? To help you turn your vision into reality.

Lighting Components for Every Situation Good lighting is efficient and ergonomic – that’s our long-term contribution to quality of life. We produce exactly the types of lighting that designers need to be able to turn their ideas into reality. Most of our product families are based on modular systems, fully scalable casing sizes, lighting units, and technologies so that they can fulfill even the most complex requirements through clean designs and consistent ideas.

16

State-of-the-Art Optics High-quality light control and calculation are one of our core competencies. Decades of experience in calculating light, along with relevant experience in materials and light sources, allow us to deliver highly efficient, ergonomic solutions. Selux optics are designed so that you can enjoy the quality you expect from top-grade light sources.

Design Engineering at its Best Form follows function: when we start designing one of our products, we plan for a long lifecycle and easy care. Installing one of our products is intuitive and ergonomic – an important aspect in keeping project costs down. Most of them do not even require tools.

17

Quality is a mindset. It's evident in our products.

High-Quality Materials and Finish Quality is a question of detail. Or more accurately: it is a question of materials, from die-cast metals to aluminum components and premiumquality plastics. It is a question of skilled workmanship – from the screws to the shadow gaps to the seals that protect our luminaires in any kind of weather or environment. And it is a question of understanding exactly how you need to use light. That is the type of understanding our experts offer – from knowledge about the decades-long lifecycle of external lighting to their uncompromising dedication to meeting the lighting needs of our customers, right down to the last detail. And all that adds up to quality. It is what makes the difference between good and excellent products.

18

Going beyond trends and technology: our innovations Vision for Future Generations We take long-term sustainability seriously: from the very start we have been responsible partners to our clients, our suppliers, and our employees. We also take concrete action to protect the environment by being prudent in our use of resources – through Dark Sky-certified luminaires, emission-free industrial complexes, solvent-free coatings, and solar energy projects.

Intelligent Lighting Selux can help you set new standards in light management through digital lighting systems. Daylight sensors and motion detectors help you to minimize your energy consumption, and multi-media surfaces can be filled with any image content you desire. Computer-controlled lighting systems create color effects for variable ambient lighting, and thus become a natural part of building’s automation.

19

Shaping the Future We want to continue improving light, and are never afraid to try out something new in order to achieve that. We conduct design studies to gain a deeper understanding of technology for our series production, and network our knowledge to help develop trailblazing innovations. By cultivating creative networks and hosting events like “Light Plus”, we foster dialog with other companies and professionals in our business. One example of that is “Manta Rhei”, a joint project with ART + COM, a design office. By combining up-to-the-minute OLED technology, electronics, and control technology, we have created a next generation luminaire that floats silently through the room, continually changing its appearance and creating a captivating combination of motion and light.

New Perspectives with LED and OLED LED and OLED open up a whole new word of economy, ergonomics, and design. The minimalistic shapes of these two technologies allow even more integrative product design. Used properly, they result in even greater efficiency: they are long lasting, use less energy, and allow light to be precisely directed and controlled. The future of light – at Selux, we call it the present.

20

A Partner with Solid Roots We know that the best ideas and solutions are born in an open-minded, reliable, and friendly environment built on trust. And that’s the way we work: in a spirit of close collaboration that leads to success.

Making Life Easier Technology is complicated enough. That is why we do everything we can to make things as easy as possible. This means not only minimising product maintenance, but also any effort and care our products need. We examine and re-examine every aspect of our design and configuration to maximize our customers benefits in every detail.

Open for New Ideas We are always open to a good idea. Our close collaboration with our clients, suppliers and partners, along with our tight networks in the markets we serve, help us to spot new ideas and trends early and incorporate them into the development of new products. We also help to foster interest in good lighting and architecture by sponsoring university events, competitions for students, the German Light Design Award, as well as international gatherings for the world’s leading lighting designers.

Light around the corner – with its illuminated bends, M-Series LED adds new dimensions to design creativity. Uniformly illuminated L, T and X connectors are available to create grid layouts with horizontal and vertical lines of light. Both LED connectors and straight runs are equipped with identical optical systems. This allows for seamless application, even of mixed combinations of all the available profiles and optics. These angles are not simply joined elements, they blend in as fully integrated parts of the luminaire, ensuring the purest application of its philosophy of continuous light lines.

Manta Rhei

“Manta Rhei” – a filigree OLED-based fixture named Manta Rhei silently floating in space while continually changing its appearance.

Combining cutting-edge OLED technology, electronics and control technology, the lighting fixture manufacturer Selux and new media design studio ART+COM have opened a new chapter in professional lighting. Through the interplay of kinetic aesthetics and the dynamics of the light a new world of lighting possibilities is now available. Classical fixture typology is expanded through the integration of mechanical movement, and new directions open up for the use of organic light emitting diode technology. Its 1.2 m × 2.4 m body housing 140 paper-thin Tridonic OLED modules combines light scenes and movement patterns into a series of carefully designed individual choreographies. One such choreography brings to mind the gentle movement of the manta ray. Thanks to the use of custom-built intelligent control technology the overall quantity of light emitted from the fixture remains constant. The result is a fascinating combination of light control and kinetics. The presentation of the Kinetic Light by members of the competence network Vikora at the Light & Building 2012 is government-funded within the scope: “Gemeinschaftsaufgabe zur Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsstruktur” (GRW) by the federal / country commitee.

LED Guide

General Basics

Selux

luminous flux

Due to complex variables between correlations of LED as light sources, parameters such as primary light fluxes under operation conditions are difficult to be compared.

Selux indicates the luminous flux of the systems for all LED luminaires. That refers to the total lumens that are achieved under normal operating conditions.

decrease of lumens over lifetime

The decrease of LED lumens over the product lifetime is directly depending on quality and LED heat management.

Selux LED systems operate in an optimum range of temperatures by a tuned heat management to achieve a high service life.

system lumen output

Compared with traditional light sources, the ratio between the current and the usable luminous flux that leaves the luminaire is essentially influenced by the driver technology and the thermal management of LED.

To ensure comparable results of the efficiency of planned lighting layouts, Selux is publishing system light output ratios. The values are always referring to a specific type of luminaire, LED unit, specific optics and driver under operating conditions. Selux LED optical systems are characterised by a higher illuminance result due to a more precise light control. Straylight is reduced that way to minimum.

thermal management

LED attain their highest lifespan and lumen output at their lowest operation temperatures.

The thermal management of the Selux luminaires ensures maximum life and lumen output. An alignment of the operating current can also help where the environmental temperatures can vary.

luminous colour

White LED are available in 3 colour temperatures: warm white up to 3300K, neutral white up to 5000K, daylight white over 5000K. The human eye is more sensitive to colour differences at colour temperatures below 3500K than at higher colour temperatures.

To avoid twilight in combination of LED luminaires with traditional light sources, Selux LED luminaires are offered with a close spaced colour range.

luminous colour – tolerances

Within the same production batch, LED luminous colours can vary due to manufacturing.

Depending on the lighting task, Selux defines tolerances (binning) within the entire production.

luminous colour – service life

During the entire service life, the specific LED luminous colour is supposed to shift.

Selux quality standards require special emphasis on the use of premium LED and sustainable thermal management. This allows for a near-zero colour-fading over time.

colour rendering

LED of identical colour temperature create different colour appearances on the same materials. This phenomenon is defined by the CRI = color rendering index. The more favourable the requirements for the colour rendering the higher is the value (CRI 100 maximum).

Selux defines the CRI between > 70 to 95 Examples: for architectural ambience lighting > Ra 80 for roadway illumination > Ra 70 for museum lighting > Ra 90

replacement/ retrofit modules

In case of extensions or replacements of existing light installations, new luminaires can show visible higher initial lumens than the other luminaires that may have had a luminous flux reduction.

Using the Selux LED module tracking, it is possible to supply replacement LED modules with a factory adjusted luminous flux to maintain the intended visual impression of the installation.

dimming/ light control

LED can be dimmed and controlled without visible steps.

All Selux LED luminaires are prepared for the integration into modern building management systems, providing highest efficiency using all possible controls.

Methods of Dimming

→ the dimming method has to be specified before ordering → a switching of the electronic ballast for another method is not possible → when ordered, this control wire for a special dimming method is part of the through wiring → the dimming of fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts is managed by a control wire → building management systems such as EIB, LCN, LON and DMX generally require special interfaces between controls and luminaires

Control Via 1–10V Interface

Control Via Switch Dim

Dimming 1 – 100 % by analogue command. Current consumption is about 0.6 mA per electronic ballast. Switching off by an external relay. Two additional wires are needed besides mains feed. The control wire is separated from the mains feed, but there is no Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) protection. Installation allowed for cables and connections for 230 V/240 V only. Common core wires are allowed for mains and control cables. The control wires have to be connected with the right polarity +/-. Wrong polarity causes malfunction.

Mains feed from pushbutton goes to a special contact of the electronic ballast. Dimming 1 – 100 % and switching on/off by a pushbutton command. Digital switch-off consumes standby wattage of > 0.8 W. One additional wire is needed besides mains feed. The control wire is part of mains feed. Installation allowed for cables and connections up to for 230V / 240 V only. Common core wires are allowed for mains and control cables.

Control Via Digital Signal Interface (DSI)

Addressing, grouping, dimming 1 – 100 %, switching off by a digital command. Digital switch-off consumes standby wattage of > 0.5 W. Two additional wires are needed besides mains feed. The control wire is separated from the mains feed, but there is no Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) protection. Installation allowed for cables and connections for 230V / 240 V only. Common core wires are allowed for mains and control cables. The control wires are independent of the polarity. Wrong polarity does not cause malfunction.

Energy saving potential by the use of CLT

Innovative CLT (Constant Luminance Technology) uses an integrated sensor inside the luminaire. CLT makes sure that the luminaire always performs to the same level – irrespective of the age of the light source or the soiling of the luminaire. To ensure this level, a photometric sensor measures the light radiated by the lamp. As the lamp ages and the luminaire becomes soiled, the luminous flux radiated by the lamp and luminaire / the luminance of the luminaire surfaces decreases. A sensor detects this decrease and triggers the dimmable electronic ballast via a servo loop until the initial luminous flux values and the luminance values of the luminaire surfaces have been regained. The ageing process is thus compensated by adjustment through the ballast. The luminance of the adjusted luminaire can be set at a value substantially below the new value of a conventional lighting installation. This innovation guarantees constant luminous flux/constant luminance of

every luminaire throughout its entire service life. The lighting designer does not need to take lamp and luminaire maintenance factors into consideration during the planning phase, i.e. the lighting installation does not need to be oversized to compensate for potential light loss.

reductions in energy use of between eight and 25 % (depending on the maintenance schedule of the respective installation). CLT is only activated when the lighting installation is switched on. Standby operation, and the added energy consumption this implies, thus no longer applies.

A luminaire equipped with CLT can be dimmed using Switch Dim. The luminaire can be set at luminances above or below the default CLT value. This means, for example, that the maximum permissible values for workspaces with computer monitors are never exceeded and / or the planned illuminances in the space are always adhered to. Thanks to this process, illuminances calculated up to 50 per cent higher for new lighting installations (together with the increased energy consumption this entails) are as much a thing of the past as falling below the minimum value recorded for installations that are seldom cleaned. CLT supports

Luminaires equipped with CLT always provide the exact same amount of light. So the user always gets exactly the kind of electric light he expects – or that he has selected via the dimmer (switch / dim button). The user can define what kind of light is required and therefore have a hand in the design of the space. CLT technology makes for an ergonomically convincing alternative to simple systems that claim to provide constant lighting levels. In the case of lamp replacement in larger configurations of luminaires the uniform luminance of the overall installation remains the same to the eye.

Technical Information

Materials All of our luminaires are made of tough, durable materials that can withstand standard mechanical loads and are resistant to corrosion.

Electrical safety Selux luminaires are manufactured in accordance with the regulations laid down in the DIN EN 60598 (VDE 0711) European standard. The most important luminaire series are marked ENEC. Our laboratory facilities allow us to carry out the relevant initial testing procedures ourselves. Our laboratory is equipped to carry out all tests in accordance with DIN EN 60598.

Operating conditions All luminaires are designed for operation at 230V/50Hz. Other voltages and frequencies are available on request.

Light distribution curves and isolux curves If you go to our website you will find product data sheets for each of famiily of luminaires. These include light distribution curves plus data regarding illuminance distribution in absolute values for luminaires equipped with standard light sources and mounted on standard poles. These curves give you a quick overview of the photometric data of any given luminaire. Light distribution curves (LVK) are also available for downloading in LDT or IES format. All photometric data are based on measurements obtained for original luminaires on our goniophotometer, which is equipped with an eccentric rotating mirror. This equipment measures the luminaires in their operating position, thus avoiding errors in measurement caused by the changed position of the light source. The eccentric gonio-photometer was developed and constructed by the Selux Research Team in cooperation TFH Berlin.

ISO 9001 and 14001 All companies in the Selux Group are ISO 9001 and 14001 certified for the development, manufacture and distribution of Selux standard, custom designed and project related luminaires.
