Thestudio‘ElbeEstuary:Designing(For)Uncertainty’ promptedauniquemethodofarchitectural investigation:

“Amoviewehaven’tseen,showingsettingswe canpartlyrememberfromareasclosetothecoastline. Architectureonlyrepresentedthroughamovie.”

Thistheoreticalprojectislocatedsomewhereonthe ElberiverbetweenCuxhavenandHamburgGermany.

Partsofthesuperstructuremovebetweentownson theriverasnecessary,astheinterventionismeantto existinadistantfuturewithrisingtidesanduncertain programmaticneeds.

Uncertainty,Impermanence,andSuspensewere thematicguidesforboththearchitecturaldesignand thefilmcreatedtoexpressthesuperstructurethat seeminglyoperatesitselfontheElbeRiver.

ThishypotheticalproposalforUNL’sGrandChallenge(IceCoringandEducationSiloCenter)prioritizesthe functionalspaceshistorictothedecommissionedAtlas-FmissilesilonearSeward,Nebraska.

ThenewfunctionalprocessesrequiredfortheICESiloincludetestingicedrillingmachineryforthegeologists andresearchers.

TheplanandaxonometricdrawingsarecreditedtoPaulMullins,withadditionalhelpfrommyselfontheNorth Sectionillustration.The3DmodelwasacombinationofworkbetweenNikitaMansinghani,PaulMullins,Will Roarty,andmyself.Themassingmodelandrenderedperspectivesshownwerepartofmycontributionstothis project.
