What lies before you, Dear Reader, includes student selected best written works from the culminating “Twelve Pieces” Project completed for Mr. De Mott’s GSWLA World Literature 9 class. Each piece for submission to the project had requirements that tested the resolve of students, and, as stated by many of the students themselves, improved their ability to find the better word choice, restructure their sentences, and ultimately make their points with poignancy and precision. To compile the best pieces became a chore in itself as email submissions flowed into my inbox. The structure of this the final ISSUU (the website used throughout my class to present readings and assignments to the students in a “magazine style” format) is one that celebrates the depth of character of these students. With that said, there is a loose affiliation to the original format structures in the set up of this ISSUU. Moreover, some pieces have been revised to better suit a larger readership. Some of the original (and challenging) writing bans have been lifted for the published editions, most notably, the ban of the “be verbs” for final submission. Additionally, I have worked as copy editor and reviser for some pieces, and, have contacted the original author to receive approval for the changes made, unless the changes in question were purely grammatical. It is worth mentioning that, as is the tradition with editors, I have created titles for many of the pieces, as many would either remain untitled, or have relatively non-descript titles. Finally, most formatting decisions made for this edition are mine, including choice of font, lettering size, color, as well as selection of images. All original images (labeled “EDM”) may peripherally relate to the writing on the page. I did not, however, create them for the association with the pieces. What has come from all this effort? Depth and Introspection. For that, I thank each student for his/her contributions, for I believe their words have bettered me, as it will, no doubt, you.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote a letter to my teacher stating my expectations for the year. Some of my expectations got fulfilled, but class assignments and other class time conversations occurred during the year that transformed me and made me realise the significance of symbolism and theme in literature. Of course I expected to be learning English, but what I envisioned was a boring, easy class that would be extremely non-committal to pass. I envisioned reading boring stories that didn't interest me. I was completely wrong. This English class, unlike any English class I’ve ever experienced before, contained so much more than the run of the mill narratives. Sure, we read stories, but they contained so much more than just a setting. For example, when we first started reading Animal Farm, I thought the story would be a stereotypical kids book that didn’t make sense, but as we continued reading and having class discussions, I realised it was packed with so much more. The symbolism in Animal Farm would have remained an indecipherable and overlooked set of concepts without our in depth discussions about it.     Around mid-September the teacher assigned us the task of writing a paragraph about our writing goals. I stated that I wanted my writing to interest readers. Also, I stated that  I wanted to use interesting words to work as a hook. I think that the Be-verb ban proved helpful in achieving these goals. Also, again the discussions in class helped provide ideas to write about and what to put in essays.     In conclusion, the bad expectations I had for my freshman English class remained unfulfilled. Instead, my English class, filled with extraordinary pieces of literature and unforgettable class discussions, allowed for the fulfillment of my writing goals. I know this because as I currently finish up my twelve pieces final project for this class, I have no problem with the ban of Be-verbs. I have discovered a type of writing nirvana with the experiences I have had in this class.

September 8th, 2015 Dear Mr.De Mott, This year my goals that reflected off of your expectations and my expectations of you as a teacher, changed exponentially. I learned many different topics this year in your classroom. Different types of poetry, stories, and old tales I had never heard of but now interest me. Some of the assessments even tested my knowledge and capacity in my English. It also encouraged my writing and work along essays and other English projects advance. If I were to reflect on how you did for my expectations in this year of 2015-2016, you did wonderfully. My schoolwork along the year has evolved widely, and I have more pride in my work. Thank you. Welcome to High School. I remember how scary I felt the summer just before I started high school. Life might change quite a bit. You have gone from seeing yourself as the oldest at your school to becoming the youngest, but that does not necessarily have to be a bad situation. My freshman year represented the most impacting, challenging, and transformative time. I made some of the best friends of my life during this year. If I could give words of encouragement and advice as a freshman, I would say: Work as hard as possible at school, even if your peers might seem not to. If you go ahead and make high grades in your freshman year, you will not have to scramble as much to make the top of your class later on. Doing your homework, assignments, and projects sounds obvious, but only responsibility can help the most. Teachers care. Adults in the school staff sincerely care about students. If you struggle in one course, ask your teacher for assitance and they will help you. Worrying about your popularity means no-good. Do not worry about trying to impress others; you should not have to! Just make others accept you for you! Do not think about dating; I entered my freshman year of high school and wanted to go on my first date, experience my first crush. Dating in high school, especially freshman year, can cause unnecessary drama in your life. Instead, join an interesting club or sport. Try new avenues; luckily your school has much to offer. You can do Spanish club, cooking club, soccer, diving, softball, etc.‌ Most importantly, have fun! Many say High School supposed to represent one of your greatest moments in life!

High school has changed me a lot. You will realize how much you actually care about school and grades. In my middle school years, I did not care about my grades as much, but I still had decent grades. So I encourage you to keep up your grades. What freshmen should expect, that classes and assignments will get a lot harder and most importantly time consuming. In AP I had to take notes on each section of each chapter, and most of the time the sections can have 5 pages or more with very little text. So I end up spending hours taking notes, but it payed off because I really learned a handful. Also expect you will not have a lockers assigned to you, but you can ask for one if you like. The one item I wish I knew before, that we have to take semester exams for elective classes, as well as a final exam for P.E., if you do not pass the required fitness tests in the wellness zone. I had a surprised look on my face when I found out that I had to take an exam for photography class. Taking an AP class became my biggest challenge in high school, because it required more time to do the work. So mostly I did not spend a lot of time hanging out with friends because of AP. I started eating dinner at around nine or ten o’clock. My sleep schedule changed dramatically, causing me to wake up feeling tired in the morning. I have to say getting into the academy and having the opportunity to travel with the academy, stood out as my favorite moments in high school. I always wanted to travel and see the world with others who share the same ideas. A couple weeks ago, I filled out a travel application to go to China, Germany, France, Northern Ireland, and Spain. Unfortunately, I did not get accepted to any of the countries, which really put me in a bummed out mood. But on the bright side I get to Costa Rica next year with the academy during the summer. Knowing this made me feel happy again that I even get to travel when I know others have not. Some advice would to enjoy high school, do not worry too much about losing old friends or not making a sports team. I want you freshmen to enjoy your first year in high school and make the most it. Believe me when I say this, high changes us, some for the better, others for the worst. But if one thing I know, you find out what you stand for and who really stands with you through those painful and fun four years. Hope you enjoy high school; it will get bumpy along the way.

Dear President Obama, Climate change prevails as a big issue causing our environment to worsen. A study led by the National Care for Atmospheric Research, states that global warming could affect oxygen levels in the oceans in just a few years. The drop in oxygen levels will have marine life struggling to breath. Scientists have not noticed the drop until now and currently continue to try to figure out how this issue occurred. They stated, "The warming atmosphere is a major threat to marine life and oceans all over the world." Phytoplankton can not produce the amount of oxygen to replace the amount lost, this resulting the issue. Runoff from fertilizers and pesticides put chemicals into oceans and other water bodies. These chemicals kill the phytoplankton thus creating less oxygen. The killing of phytoplankton along with the warming atmosphere has caused the oxygen levels to drop. This affects me personally, because I live on the East Coast, by the Atlantic Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, and other rivers. A major industry found here, seafood, brings the city money. As a tourist spot, it could quickly change when dead fish and other sea creatures and possible marine animals start washing up on the shores of beaches. Tourists would not want to see any of that while on vacation. I think you should try and stop this. I propose that limiting the amount of fertilizers and pesticides used will also limit the amount of runoff. Limiting the amount of runoff will help the phytoplankton live. To do this, I think you should limit the sale of pesticides and fertilizers over the nation. If necessary to some gardeners or farmers, then set a limit environmentally acceptable to use. I also believe we should spread awareness of the dying animals in the oceans. As to many creatures, the ocean acts as a habitat and the human race has not fully explored it yet. Yours Sincerely, Mellanie Galupe Global Scholar P.S. I hope you accept the fact of a warming atmosphere unlike Trump who laughs at the idea.

Dear Mr. President, Over the last seven years, basketball has become one of the most important activities in my life besides family, friends and school. Some of my friends have told me that I “eat, sleep, and breathe basketball.” Attendance for the basketball games in my middle and elementary school between the girls and the boys was about the same amount. When I started playing on Tallwood’s team I noticed that the parents just came to the girls’ games, but the boys’ games has a lot of attendees, even though my team won the Beach District Championship and had a better record than the boys. I know that it may not seem very important, but you will not find it just high school. It has also become present in college, professional, and even in other sports. In the pros, along with the lack of attendance, a lack if pay has become present between males and females. When my teacher first presented this letter idea to my class, he asked to look at your website and I saw that you have taken action to help resolve the equal pay issue, and I like your ideas very much. According to a vicesports.com article, Diana Taurasi made the All-Women’s national Basketball Association first team in 2014 and help the Phoenix Mercury win the league championship. For the whole entire season she made $107,500. In 2013-14 the Phoenix Suns employed Dionte Christmas for 198 minutes and he received a $490,180 pay check. Taurasi did more work and put in more effort and she received less than Christmas who played for 198 minutes and received so much more. Female athletes don’t really try to take a stand because they got an opportunity of a lifetime to play a sport they love with all their heart. They most definitely eat, sleep, and breathe basketball. Since the WNBA doesn’t make as much as the NBA they would cancel the league if all the players decided to boycott until they found a happy medium. This issue has become extremely important to me, and with your help I hope to find a solution for the pay gap between men and women in all work forces, of all races, and of all ages. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Payton Sinsabaugh GSWLA Student

Dear Mr. President, Teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep a night in order to remain healthy. Only 15% of teenagers report getting 8 hours of sleep on a school night. Why do they receive so little sleep? Perhaps the struggle of balancing a social life, extracurricular activities, puberty, and homework have contributed to this issue. A poll taken of public high school teachers has shown that, on average, students receive 3.5 hours of homework a night. Can you imagine the stress this must cause? At most on school nights I get 7 hours of sleep. My early start time does contribute to this but the factor of my large workload contributes the most. I, a 9th grade high school student, taking only one AP class, spend 2 hours on homework a night and always get anxious over my next report card. My weekends have gone from hanging out with my friends and going out with my family, to doing homework and catching up on lost sleep. Scientific studies have proven that young adults function better under less pressure of getting good grades. The idea to “strive for an A” becomes instilled in a child’s mind from a very young age. A students’ life may focus so hard on school’s curriculums that they have barely any room to grow and learn their own way. Creative processes slowly diminish as the main focus becomes what the teacher wants. In order to solve this problem, we should change the education system to accommodate the students’ needs. Maybe a limit on homework or a longer weekend. A structure to allow students time to relax and not worry about school for once. This type of education has worked in Finland, the country with the best education system internationally. They believe in “less is more” for their students which means no homework and shorter school days. By instituting a policy like this on American education systems we may see an increase in test scores and higher grade point averages while having happy, healthy students. Let’s make school less like prison and more like sanctuary. With respect, Sophia Rubsamen

Excerpt from UN Speech Women have never been equal to men. Shouldn’t women get paid the equal amount of money for the equal amount of work? “For winning the Women’s World Cup in Canada, FIFA gave the U.S. team 2 million dollars from a total purchase of 15 million dollars. Last Summer in Brazil, champion Germany got 35 million dollars from a total FIFA purse 355 million dollars distributed to men’s World Cup teams.” I know people see the big difference. Those women worked very hard and it seems like they didn’t get a lot. I don’t understand this problem. That just goes to show how people see women in this world.

Hello fellow citizens of the world. In the past several years the subject of gender parity has sparked more and more interest and importance. A majority of the Earth today dreams of a world where men and women live without boundaries based upon their gender. However some may long for the ‘simpler times’ when well defined gender roles existed, exhibited by the well-known phrase “where men were men, and women were women”. While only a small portion of the world will hear this speech, these words should influence all. Throughout the world, society holds both genders at specific standards, in most cases, one superior to the other. Gender equality has shown much improvement over time, but it has not yet reached its full potential. A while ago, women got shut in the house to cook and clean, almost as though they had no other purpose. Men had the responsibility of making all the money for their families as well as getting thrown into wars regardless of their wishes and pleads. Today, society shames men for crying, and women still only receive 75 cents to every dollar a man makes. Escaping from these stereotypes proves impossible as they exist in the games played, the magazines read, and the books that children read. It seems as though this world has kept in a constant state of continuity. Both literature of today and many years ago uses quite traditional gender roles. In Charles Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’ men had to serve in the military and women cooked, cleaned, and took care of the children, showing stereotypical gender roles. Another example of traditional views occurs in the book ‘Animal Farm’. Only male characters held leadership roles while the book portrayed females as less intelligent and obsessed with the way they look. Gender roles in children’s books “can become integral to the child’s personality development,” telling boys they must have strength and heroism and girls that they must have extreme beauty and dependence upon men. Gender roles also prevails in the current education system. The lack of female representation in the STEM field continues to affect the numbers of females going

in science, technology, engineering, and math. In 2015, out of the 49,000 students who took the AP Computer Science test females only made up 22%. Recent educational numbers also show that male students do not get an equal quality education. They earn 70% of the D's and F's that teachers give their students. Today, in pop culture, gender roles subconsciously influence many people either positively or negatively. Disney has remained a very large company that shapes the mind of many. Disney princesses have always shown dependence, awaiting men to their rescue in addition to the use of their physical appearance as their primary asset. However, this trend might have begun to change. Recently in 2013, Disney released the movie Frozen in which a female coins the heroic role, saving her sister, the ice queen. In the ABC Family show ‘Melissa and Joey’ the main male character takes care of the family while the lead female character works as a city councilperson. Discrimination and stereotyping of the past and present has tested both genders, but the future shall not do the same. The mere introduction of a new ideology can fix this issue, by thinking of the world as a collection of humans rather than a collection of males and females. Notice the usage of the greeting, “fellow citizens of the world,” rather than ladies and gentlemen. Why should the anatomy of the human body hold any individual back from all that life has to offer? Along with a new way of thinking, media also needs to allow for both genders to have equal representation. Now, this may prove difficult and will go against the views of society, but there remains hope.

Good afternoon men and women of the United Nations. I work as head of research for sustainable goal number five, which strives to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. We have gathered here, at the fifth annual GIRLS ROCK SG5 to report progress, and lack thereof. I do not wish to place blame on any particular group. I would like to present some unsatisfactory statistics and offer a solution to work towards gender parity. Because of this, I will attempt to keep this as factual as possible, as I support each claim with hard evidence. Gender equality exists as a global issue. You could find a frustrating gender role in plenty of society today, but I highly doubt you would like to listen to a year-long speech about gender equality. Therefore, I plan on focusing on a few topics. To further state this issue, I present a few statistics concerning other factors that contribute to gender equality: Women do 66% of work in the world, yet own 1% of the world’s property. Women do more than half the work on this planet but I leave you to come to your own conclusions as to where any salary they earn goes. According to Huffington Post, With the gender pay gap, white women work 59 days a year free, black women work 94 days free, and Hispanic women work 117 days free. In other words, imagine getting a paycheck after July 21st for Hispanic women, August 21st for African American women, or October 16th for White women. These pennies an hour may seem irrelevant, but I promise you, they add up very quickly. Gender and race should not determine how much a human being makes.

The pop singer, Lady Gaga, has even gotten in on women’s issues. She wrote a song entitled Til It Happens To You for the expose of rape on college campuses, named The Hunting Ground. She sings for an important cause; 1/6 women worldwide have been the victim of rape or attempted rape in college. Even worse, society exposes young girls to the same as their mothers, a vicious cycle that must end. Disney movies present our next generation to princess who basically only have their beauty going for them. The Little Mermaid displays a woman literally giving up her voice for a man. These princesses act as role models to young girls everywhere and this symbolism, intentional or not, must end. As reported by Mary Pilon, the men’s world cup got payed forty times higher than the woman’s for doing the same job: winning the world cup. Jamie J. Weinman discusses gender roles in her article about video games. Female players want better representation in games, but many men still wish for the traditional damsel in distress. In many different environments, somehow women tend to have the short end of the stick. In children’s literature only 32% have female main characters. This male dominance teaches children at a young age that women have less importance than their male counterparts, hindering gender parity at nearly infancy. This male dependency doesn’t end in young adult literature. In Twilight New Moon, Bella falls into a deep depression over a boy she just met a few months ago. “True love” could have just affected her, but the question still remains: Why set examples to put female’s happiness in a male’s hands?

Luckily, I have not just wasted breath telling you displeasing facts about the state of gender parity. Gender inequality exists as a global issue that starts in this room and could diffuse all over the world. Acknowledge women’s accomplishments and appreciate them for the 66% of labor they put into this world, and help them gain more than 1% to show for it. Speak out for the oppressed and inform people about what you learned today. I’m sorry to break it to Ariel, but voice matters. Speak out about problems I have said. Acknowledge that men and women do not have it even, and then inform coworkers, friends and family. A perfect solution does not exist. Maybe only one of you understood the seriousness of gender inequality. And for that one: go research. See for yourself how women live. Share your findings with the world. Tiny steps towards equality solve a massive issue. Humanity cannot fight for what you don’t inform them about. Thank you for your time, now please, go out and spread the word!

State of Gender Parity – Caroline Vorndran Gender equality; the state in which gender does not limit access to rights or opportunities. Although most parts of the world have begun to work towards a more equal society, complete gender equality has not yet happened in most of the world. To show how gender equality has improved over the years, a person must look at past and present factors. To start, a person could look at literature, popular culture, and the workforce over the past few decades. To understand how equality of the sexes has improved over time we need to look at any kind of media from the past and present years and determine the differences. When looking through the history of society, women have almost always had a less important role than men. You can clearly see this in popular culture from different eras. The media that we consume, especially at a young age, can have major effects on our beliefs in life, which makes looking at media and popular culture important. Disney, a company founded nearly 100 years ago, can give us a look into how the portrayal of women has changed over time. From 1937 until 1959 stories like Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty all had female main characters, but all of the Princesses had a trait in common; they acted as damsels in distress that needed a Prince to save them. Also, in Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, women played the role of villain, and no women helped them. Giving female characters roles in which they can only play one or two character types encourages the idea that women have certain roles that they must play in the world. In television from the 1950’s until the 1980’s, women’s characters always appeared as care takers, not giving them opportunities to take up different roles. Equal representations of men and women with diverse roles and personalities will enforce the idea that both genders can do whatever they’d like and have their own character, regardless of gender. Literature can also give us insight into gender roles during the years that an author wrote and published the writing in, even if they wrote it in a different year than the time period in which it takes place. For example, Charles Dickens Great Expectations only has four female characters, which can already cause an issue because of the low amount of female representation, but the character traits given to the women can cause issues as well. The women in Great Expectations have character traits such as revengefulness, and have violent and heartless personalities, with the exception of Biddy who treated Pip well. Now children’s stories contain powerful women that like traditionally masculine activities like

Giving girls and boys representation that defies stereotypes and social constructs makes them realize that boys and girls can like the same stuff because they have equal options. Having representation of men and women that defy stereotypes such as strong women and sensitive boys in literature will show citizens that stereotypes shouldn’t have any weight. Unfair treatment of women in the workplace has caused significant oppression of women through the years. “History of the struggle for fair pay” from the National Committee on Pay Equity, shows that discrimination against women in the workforce has occurred since women entered it. Some situations that women often went through include moving to the top of the firing list if they had a husband in 1932, and the government requiring women who work in government jobs to earn 25% less in their salary than men in 1937. Women have always had struggles in the workforce. Though societies throughout the world have taken great strides towards equality in the labor force in the past 30 years, society has not yet reached completely equal pay between men and women. In a study by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) it shows that the gender wage gap has improved over the years, but possibly not as quickly as we think. In 1960, women earned less than 60% of what men earned. Based on this study, America can expect equal pay between men and women by 2058. Both unfair pay and unequal opportunity create inequality between men and women. If you look at the US university system, men take up over 50% of the top 3 highest paying jobs in universities because low or no paying jobs have a lower promotion rate for women. Though the university system having less women overall may lead to those numbers as well. Granted societies have worked hard towards pay equality for many years, making sure that women have the same opportunities and pay as men remains an important issue that needs fixing if we want to move towards a more equal society. Basic tasks like including more diverse character traits for men and women in media and literature, and giving women the same opportunities as men will result in an equal and happy life for all. Thank you.

“Good morning, young men of Jamestown High School. For the past month, I have been speaking to the guys of high schools across the country on behalf of the United Nations Gender Equality Commission. As boys ranging from around fourteen to eighteen, I imagine that the vast majority of you roll your eyes and cross yours arms while scoffing to your buddy sitting next to you at the random lady standing before you talking about feminism. You do this because you most likely assume that I’m here to discuss women’s rights and lecture you about treating your female peers as equals and showing them respect and chivalry. I assume you’ve heard that whole speech before, and that speech is precisely the issue I wish to discuss. So, I ask that you simply listen to what I have to say, because that speech profoundly affects every one of you. In fact, because of that speech, you rolled and crossed and scoffed when I came up here and when the word ‘feminism’ was uttered. Well, to shed some clarity, feminism, by definition, means the advocacy of women having political, social, and economic equality to men. This topic has developed into one of much-heated controversy, and it tantalizes every nation in existence. In fact, the discussion has been so heated that the word has almost developed a negative connotation, particularly here in the U.S. Suddenly, if a girl declares herself a feminist, it equates to her hating men. How does that feel? Having nations of girls suddenly hating you because you belong to the male species? You have to constantly go about your day hearing about how guys suck because of this and that and because they did this and that. You probably cannot go a single day without hearing about an injustice to a woman by a man. Whether the issue regards not receiving equal pay as her male counterparts, being catcalled while merely walking down the street, or being sexually abused. Now don’t get me wrong, for these serious issues most definitely need to end, but I have not come here to talk about these particular problems today. I know that you constantly hear about these injustices, and millions of people every day work tirelessly to put an end to them. However, many issues do not receive this same publicity or anywhere near the same level of discussion or thought, and you guys know it firsthand. You have not heard about these injustices on TV or from your friend’s older sister, instead, you have experienced them throughout your day-to-day life. For example, a sixteen-year-old boy committing suicide because even though he suffers from a serious mental illness, he feels like he cannot ask for help on the grounds of being viewed as weak. Or a young, seven-year-old boy choking

down his tears and hiding in his room because society has already taught that men do not to cry. How about the court denying a caring, capable father the right to see his only daughter because they simply tend to side with the mother? You guys have faced or will face these injustices at some point in your life, and the fact that it has yet to establish itself as a real issue concerns me deeply, as it should you too. This fact holds the achievement of gender parity back. We do not often think of society imprisoning men through gender stereotypes, for we often consider them the default of the human race and what women need to rise themselves up to, and this toxic misconception must die. As soon as it was realized that women did not receive the advantages that men did, it was the only issue the enraged women could focus on. Men’s roles in the equation slipped from their minds, and society continued to unconsciously force men to live up to impossible standards of strength, intelligence, confidence, and success. The fact that the word ‘manly’ even exists should raise a red flag. The media constantly bombards you with these messages and carves them deep into your unsuspecting mind. If I asked each of you to make a list of ten men and ten women off the top of your head, chances are the majority of men would occupy authoritative positions such as politicians or leaders, while the women would primarily hold careers in the entertainment field. Men are generally taken more seriously in our society, as well as in societies across the world, and therefore remain more notable in the high-status positions we associate them with. This has built up expectations of men that probably every single one of you feels obligated to live up to. When people feel such intense pressure to fall within certain lines, not doing so proves extremely difficult. A clear, observable example of this occurs in the STEM field. Studies have revealed that careers in the STEM field are overwhelmingly dominated by males, and even that a mere 22% of test takers of the AP computer science exam were female. When Google came out on their frighteningly disproportionate gender statistics, a frenzy of furious and befuddled Americans popped up in regards the lack of female workers. “Why do more women not join the STEM work force?” “Why will employers not hire more women?” “Why do women not deem themselves adequate for such jobs?” These passionate citizens throw these questions around rhetorically, because to them, the answers seem obvious. Then, with these answers, thousands of noble, well-meaning, everyday heroes band together to put an end to this harrowing injustice. However, the fact that they ask these particular questions remains

P

e

e

r

ANCIENT UR FAIR VERONA HAVISHAM MANSION SAVATHI GROVE JONES FARM LONDONTOWNE MYTHICAL ATHENS

the reason that only two thirds of countries in the developing regions have achieved gender parity in primary education. Because of the answers to these questions, only 74 girls for every 100 boys are enrolled in primary schools in Southern Asia. Because of this mindset, girls in sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania, and Western Asia still face many barriers when entering both primary and secondary schools. Though the world has made great progress over the years regarding gender parity, if we don’t start asking the right questions, we cannot expect this dream to manifest itself into reality. Questions like, “Why do employers hire men so frequently?” “Why do such a high percentage of men feel obligated to enter STEM fields?” Though these questions do not seem extremely different than the other ones, the switch in perspective will offer startling new ways of looking at the situation. We need to ask these questions because the answers will lead us to fully understanding society’s gender structure, thus bringing about the change we have craved for so long. Once we view these situations from the men’s side, we will realize the entirety of what goes into men feeling like they have no choice but to stay within certain guidelines, which will consequently help us understand why society has left women with the roles they have, and this will allow us to finally do something about it. We will realize that if men give up the need to behave aggressively, women will not feel compelled to behave submissively. If men give up the need to control, women will give up letting men control them. Both men and women should have the freedom to express sensitivity, to find strength within themselves, and to feel comfortable enough to let down the walls that society has forced them to build up, so they can finally express their true selves without crippling anxiety. We need to learn that not falling in perfect alignment with society’s expectations does not make you weak, or defective, or weird. Men, I hate to break it to you, but you do not exist as the more dominant gender. We should not have to tell you to treat your female peers with respect; that speech comes from the subconscious belief that men dominate women, and therefore we must convince men to step down from their pedestal so that women can have a chance as well. However, this pedestal does not exist. Men do not deserve more rights and opportunities than women, just like women do not deserve more rights and opportunities than men. Changing our mindset about gender roles has become critical so that we can gain the freedom to behave unapologetically as ourselves and give the earth the rich diversity that it loves and craves. This change in mindset begins

with every one of you asking the right questions and learning the answers so that we can educate the world about the truth behind gender stereotypes and how we do not need them. Admittedly, raising people out of their long-held beliefs and engrained ideas of gender roles will prove difficult, and it will take many steps after changing our mindsets to truly achieve gender equality, but we can do it. We can do it, and we will do it, through guys and girls alike. We can change our perspective on gender so that we can finally experience a world with equality for the total world population, regardless of previous destructive mindsets. Thank you.

The Full Windsor Two sisters, Addison and Lauren, to ran around around the house get their younger brother ready for a dinner for their mother’s charity. Addison volunteered to help the young boy tie his tie. In the process, she yanked the tie off of him and ended up burning his neck. She explained exactly what she had done in detail to her mother. Addison: I stared at the pink marks across his neck. I was heavily frustrated. I knew I should have just let Lauren help him, but we all know I had a problem accepting help. I promise I know how to tie a Windsor. I stared at the navy blue tie with pink and white polka dots, and went through the process yet again. You always start with the wide end of the tie on the right and the small end on the left. The tip of the small end should rest slightly above his belly button. You should only move the wide end. First, the wide end goes over the small end to the left. Second, up into the neck loop from underneath, then it goes down to the left. Third, the wide end goes around the back of the small end, to the right then follows through up to the center towards the neck loop. Next, the wide end goes through the neck loop and down to the right and across the front to the left. Then, you go up into the neck loop from underneath, and down through the loop you've just created in the front. Lastly, tightening the knot by pulling down on the wide end and sliding the knot up and adjust. I have no idea where I got lost or why I possessed enough anger to choke an innocent six year old. Next time, I plan on just buying the child a clip on.

How to Remove Staples Like Barbarra Why do staples on bulletin boards take so much effort to remove? And why are staple removers so expensive? A staple remover 3-pack costs $10 at Walmart! Well, Barbarra Devlin once said, “There are 3 cheap, easy to use, and cost effective staple removers out there that everyone can use! I’m talking about scissors, ballpoint pens, and your own fingers!” With the proper tools and techniques one can remove staple like Barbarra. Scissors, scissors cut paper, but Barbarra uses them to remove staples most of the time. To remove staples from bulletin boards with scissors one must follow three simple steps to removing efficiently and safely. First, one must use the inside blade of the scissors to dig underneath the gap between the board and the staple itself. Second, after wiggling the blade underneath the staple one one must make the inside blade of the scissors flush with the bulletin board, this is best done with pre1990’s scissors. Lastly, one must slide the scissors in an upward direction to safely remove the staple, then they can pry it out with their fingers and throw it in the recycling bin. Although the scissors have great leverage and can remove staples very cleanly and efficiently, they have some negative effects. Scissors may tear into the bulletin board when applying too much pressure on the handle, as the board is very malleable the scissors may permanently damage the bulletin board with overuse. Next, ballpoint pens. The common office ballpoint pen has a variety of uses, some example include writing letters, writing forms, signing letters, signing forms, digging, and most commonly, prying and picking at annoyances. Now, the common office ballpoint pen has one particular, notable use that come to Barbarra's mind all the time, removing staples. To remove staples with a ballpoint pen one must uncap the pen and use the writing end to pry underneath the staple, it may take a few tries but usually comes with ease to Barbarra. After prying underneath the staple one must push a bit upwards and the pull outwards to remove the staple from the board swiftly. Ballpoint pens can remove staple very quickly and cleanly, but the can also cause detrimental damage to the board and the remover, as using too much force may cause an accidental eye-stabbing, also the pen can write on the board and turn it different colors.

Barbarra claims that she has mastered the art of staple removing and can use a ballpoint without any fear of self injury or writing on the bulletin board. If one does not know the proper techniques to remove staples with ballpoint pens they should stay as far away from the pens as possible and only remove staples with scissors or their fingers. The final cheap tool used to remove staples can be found on either hand unless the staple removing cadet has no hands. The fingers are very cheap (they literally cost $0.00 to own) and effective. Barbarra suggests that one should grow out their index finger’s nail because the lengthened nail gives a greater amount of leverage to the remover (remover refers to the one doing the removing). To remove staples with the fingers one must first dig underneath the staple with the index finger from the top of the staple and pull outwards. When the remover can fit the entire tip of their index finger underneath the staple can be removed by using the thumb to grip the staple and then pulling outwards. The only downside to this method, terrible pain in the fingernails in which it feels like the nail is being ripped from the finger. Barbarra feels no pain and can use her fingers with ease to remove staples. The pain only lasts for a few seconds and really has no severity to it, but it does hurt to sensitive removers. In conclusion, the common staple remover tool can has no use in Barbarra’s work place and should have no use in the common office assistant's work place because of the three easy to use, cost effective, and cheap staple removing tools. One can remove staples with ease following the steps presented earlier. No staple can correctly claim to be un-removable, and, with the proper techniques and tools, one can remove staples like Barbarra Devlin.

Enhancing Picture through Photoshop

Matthew Moslares

Photographers use creative Photoshop app in picture they took or picture that they’re in. Photographers whose not the only one who use Photoshop it might be blogger, student, school, graphic artist, etc….. Nonprofessional maybe use some apps like Picsart, VSCO & Afterlight. Photoshop have different tools like to enhance brightness or contrast, put some filters. First, photoshop have the exposure section on it. The function of exposure tool simply adjusts the images’s brightness. The pictures on the bottom shows how does the exposure tools have been use to make the picture appealing. In the middle is the original picture without exposure. While the picture in the right had become brighter because of adjusting the brightness to +6. The left picture become dark because of -6 exposure. Other photographers might prefer to use darker exposure of brighter exposure it depends on the picture that going to edit.

Second, some photoshop have filters. Different kind of varieties of filters like blur, different color, etc. Filter a particular effect that applied to an image or part of an image. VSCO app have filters that change the color of the image. While, PicsArt have Fx, blur, artistic, pop art, paper, distort, colors & corrections. Some app may have the same filter or others don’t have it. Many times photographer buys professional photoshop app to their pictures. Also, in filters you can adjust how strong the effect in the picture. In the left picture the picture focus mainly on the facebe. While, in the right picture the picture turned into black & white. Photoshop change overtime because of the development of new technology. The photographer that will edit the picture will decide what kind of changes he/she wants in the picture. Brightness, contrast, filter these tools help to make the picture better through enhancing it.

UNICEF Smurf Bombing A commercial released by UNICEF showed thirty seconds of a Smurf village being carpet-bombed. A poster, released along side it, depicted the climax of the commercial with burning houses and injured Smurfs on the ground. The desired effect for the commercial: to shock the viewers to pay more attention. UNICEF released this ad campaign to raise money for exchild-soldiers in Africa. The ad used many visual techniques that make the message clearer. The angle of objects inside a poster, or the poster itself, has an impact to how the audience receives the information. Vertical lines signify importance, horizontal lines mean information, and diagonal lines portray action. In this poster vertical and diagonal lines, which represent importance and action, contribute the most to the message. For action/ vertical lines, the artist drew the picture at an angle along with the falling bombs and the fallen Smurfs. The only vertical elements: the crying Baby Smurf and the sky-high flames in the background. The fact that Baby Smurf had the last frame made viewers connect the ad to children even more.

The arrangement of the elements of the poster contains simply makes the message as impactful as possible. This ad showed citizens that war effects children too. UNICEF achieved this by using a dearly beloved, childhood cartoon. The Smurf ad had much more of a reaction from audiences than past commercials where the suffering of real children was shown. The Smurf ad campaign was a success due to the fact that Americans see a fictional cartoons being blown up more horrifying than real children in need of help.

Lord of the Flies, The Most Dangerous Game, To Build a Fire, and The Lottery. The characters in these four stories have many similarities and differences because of the situations, problems, and encounters they go through. This essay will say the ways they were found them similar and different. These stories have many similarities, the most obvious one that all the stories feature a death. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford killed General Zaroff after winning the game. In Lord of the Flies, Piggy and Simon’s lives both ended quite abruptly. None of the characters died naturally either. In the four stories, four murders took place, and one person froze to death. Another similarity, for example, all of the characters in the stories want to stay alive. Many of the characters seemed confused about their entire situation at first. When the boys in Lord of the Flies first landed on the island, they figured that their parents would just come get them right away. It took some time for them to figure out how truly alone they became after the plane crash. In To Build a Fire, the man thought he could walk through the snowstorm to get to his friends, but it the reality could not have played out differently. While these stories have many similarities, they also contain quite a few differences. In the stories, the conflict begins a few different ways. In Lord of the Flies, the conflict really starts when Ralph and Jack begin to fight and then split up. In The Most Dangerous Game, the conflict doesn’t start until the man lands on the island. Also, some characters have a companion and others do not. The man in To Build a Fire had his dog, but the man in The Most Dangerous Game had no one but himself to keep him company. The age and intellect differed in the characters as well. While Ralph and Jack argued like little kids (although the situation did get worse as time went on), the two men in The Most

If a person can identify the ways that the characters differ, then they can imagine how the rest of the characters in the story feel in the situation. And if they can figure out the similarities the characters share, it gives them the opportunity to look even deeper into the stories and what they really mean. (Ana Roney)

Character Comparison Across the broad varieties of literature, the different pieces of literature portray how authors create characters in many different ways. Their personalities and distinctive traits allow them to connect with the readers. The author incorporate the characters into the story to point out a certain message or theme to the readers. Characters share similar and different traits, as well as, the unique ways of how they think and interact with others. The similarities between characters allow the reader to understand the will to survive or lack thereof, as shown, in the works The Most Dangerous Game, The Lord of the Flies, and How to Build a Fire. The authors of these narratives all display characters with similar features and actions. Both Piggy, Lord of the Flies, and Rainsford, The Most Dangerous Game have a pure imagination characteristic, with which they can come up with new innovative ideas. These characters’ imaginations come from the strong instincts that they have. Other characters like the dog in How to Build a Fire and General Zaroff from The Most Dangerous Game also have natural instincts. Those instincts allow the dog to survive, however, not General Zaroff. Although Piggy has good instincts and strong senses, he does not survive because a boulder killed him.

Even though these characters have many similarities, the characters and their actions and traits also have many differences. The man in How to Build a Fire does not display nor have any emotions. He shows as a static and flat character, who does not evolve in his story and accepting fate his fate with little or no fight. On the other hand, Rainsford displays a dynamic and round character, who uses his experience, instinct, and desire to live to outwit his opponent, Zaroff. However, Piggy, being a static and flat character, contributes to his own death in the novel. By placing the characters in natural settings, the author illustrates the characters’ relationships with nature and allows them to develop a relationship with their natural surroundings. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford has a relationship with his natural surroundings beginning with his descent into the water from the yacht, then with the natural elements on the island like the trees and the quicksand. In The Lord of the Flies, all of the characters had to deal with living on the island to survive. Piggy uses his survival skills to turn his glasses into a flint in order to start a fire while using nature to his benefit. The characters in these three works use the resources around them to sustain their lives. In How to Build a Fire, both the dog and the man challenged with surviving the weather. The dog’s good instincts regarding the cold enabled him to survive the freezing, snowy weather, however the lack of

good instincts in the man was his weakness. The will to survive in these stories appear similarly. In all of these stories, the characters and their relationships with nature indicates a similar theme, life versus theme.

Thoughts to Decisions to Actions What do a strong cart-horse and a young girl have in common? Both Boxer from Animal Farm and Ji-li Jiang from Red Scarf Girl make most of their decisions based on their interactions with others. Boxer and Ji-li hear the conflicting opinions of others and make their own decisions based on what they hear. Sometimes they have trouble deciding what side they wish to join; other times the path reveals itself. An individual’s family or group influences his or her interactions with the world because the opinions and actions of some impact the thoughts and decisions of others around them. Out of all the important components of the living body, the mind seems to change the most. Sometimes an individual’s own experiences can shape the mind, while other times the mind chooses to follow others. In Animal Farm, Napoleon the pig has risen to power after the overthrowing of the previous capitalist farm-owner, Mr. Jones. Napoleon, after he chased away his competition, continued to progress in the creation of the windmill under his “Animalist” system. Although Napoleon initially said “all animals are equal,” it later became “but some animals are more equal than others” (Orwell 65). Boxer clearly represents this twisted concept. Despite the rising dictatorship of Napoleon, Boxer continued to say his two mottos: “I will work harder” (36) and “Napoleon is always right” (40). The propaganda of Squealer influenced Boxer to think that every decision that Napoleon made benefitted all the other animals. This brainwashing technique caused Boxer to blame himself if a task went wrong. In Red Scarf Girl, Ji-li also faced the horrors of brainwashing. During the Cultural Revolution in Communist China, the leader, Chairman Mao, ordered that all the citizens get rid of the old ideas, culture, customs, and habits. However, this did not go down peacefully. The Red Guards, in charge of the operation, would write cruel, exaggerated, or even false statements revealing a family’s bourgeois, capitalist lifestyle in a da-zi-bao. The citizens of Shanghai, where Ji-li lived, believed these statements and would look down upon others, sometimes even their own family members. Ji-li, when she found out her grandfather had died a landlord, became embarrassed and ashamed of her last name, especially after the release of the article “Half-City Jiangs.” Ji-li told her mother “I hate landlords. I hate this

r

landlord family” (Jiang 211). Even though she should have had a sense of pride in her name, she had come to hate it because of the thoughts and opinions of others. Generally, thoughts lead to decisions and decisions lead to actions. Boxer, because he consistently told himself to work harder, never quit and would work longer hours than all the other animals. While Napoleon laid around barking orders to the other animals, Boxer worked as hard as he could, dragging huge boulders up the hill to build the windmill. When Boxer began to grow older, Clover, the other cart-horse, would warn him “a horse’s lungs do not last forever” (Orwell 53). However, Boxer did not care and continued to push himself for the sake of Napoleon. Despite the two conflicting opinions Boxer heard, Napoleon’s and Clover’s, he decided to listen to Napoleon’s because of his overwhelming presence and propaganda. Similarly, Ji-li took her hatred of her name to the next level. While she passed the police station on the way home from school, she remembered the neighborhood boys chanting at her: “HalfCity Jiangs! Half-City Jiangs! Down with the landlord Half-City Jiangs!” (Jiang 212). This memory angered her so much that she went into the police station and requested to change her name. The policeman told her that if she did this, she would make “a clean break with [her] black family” (214). However, when she thought about how her family would feel after this, she changed her mind. Although she experienced the conflicting opinions of the officer and her family, she decided to take the high, but difficult road, of sticking with her family. She did this because she loved her family too much to leave them behind. Both Boxer and Ji-li had to make choices when problems came their way. Even when multiple forces influenced them, the overpowering force won, such as Napoleon’s dictatorship and the love of Jili’s family. These forces guided Boxer and Ji-li’s thinking and decision making. All the time others’ opinions bombard the mind when it needs to make various decisions and choices. However, in the end one force will overwhelm and influence the individual to make a decision he or she will either highly praise or deeply regret.

Assessment for Family of Count Paris v. House of Capulet In the court case, "Family of Count Paris V. House of Capulet," both sides had the strongest case out of all of the cases because they both had a lot of preparation. Also, the individuals in this court case saw others go first. Both sides had strong arguments, but the defense went a little further and pulled the case together. For the prosecution's opening statement, they knew the chargers and projected their voice and had a strong introduction. The defense's opening statement also stood up and projected, and had a well put together statement other than just the charges, they went more in depth to draw the

members of the jury in. The prosecution's closing statement had good reasoning that the Capulets portrayed as not nice themselves and they had a good argument about the child neglect charge, but the defense's closing statement came off as a bit more put together because they just said, "They never cared for her feelings, they just wanted Juliet to Marry Paris," for the child neglect charge. The prosecution had good evidence and referred to some pages in the book for the charge of child neglect, for example, page 85. The defense had good arguments back for child neglect and referred to page 120 from the book. The prosecution did not prepare for the defense to have such strong evidence to rebuttal their charge. However, the prosecution did not give up, they tried and looked for more evidence and had good definitions for words helpful in their court case like the word, "child neglect," they mentioned how neglect had to do with emotional feelings as well and used that to help themselves. For the question and answer portion of the court case, the prosecution had a great rebuttal when they said, "child neglect includes emotions." The defense had a really good counter argument that portrayed the turning point in the court case. The defense mentioned how Juliet and Romeo married each other even though the book did not include that part, but it still happened. Also, the defense made the persecution second guess if the Nurse portrayed as a Capulet or not. In conclusion, the defense won because they had evidence for all of the charges and a response for almost all of the arguments that the prosecution charged them with. (Ashley Farinha)

The Album That Shalt Not Be Named

The album Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! by Panic! At the Disco exists as possibly the worst P!ATD album to date. The songs have a very monotone emotion, something like a combination of teen angst and that feeling of slight disgust experienced when forced to smell garbage. The album‛s cover depicts a grayscale image of the lead singer Brendan Urie smoking a cigarette, with colorful smoke coming from it. This perfectly describes the album: gray, monotone crap, with a splash of not-so-crappy color. The album, however, does have it‛s good songs, such as Miss Jackson and Girls/Girls/Boys, but they are few and far between. The album starts with This is Gospel, a wonderful song about leading the “black sheep” of the world to a place where they are safe and accepted. Great song, one of the few on the album. Luckily, it seems P!ATD placed most of the best songs first, with Miss Jackson up next. This piece features LOLO, and she and Brendan blast the album away with a powerful, exciting song. The album begins to go downhill from here with Vegas Lights, a ridiculously repetitive song about living it up. The song goes so far as to include a countdown sequence from the children's show Sesame Street, of all places. Next up comes Girl that you Love, a song that better fits the motif of monotone and angsty. Then Nicotine, a mediocre song about a guy stuck in an abusive relationship because the way she acts makes her “addictive,” like nicotine. After that comes Girls/Girls/Boys (or Girls love Girls love Boys, for those uneducated in internet symbology), which shows Brendan‛s feelings on the issue of LGBT+ rights. The emotional and powerful chorus goes “Girls love Girls and Boys, and love is not a choice,” taking the issue to the somewhat less mentioned lesbian side of the argument. From there, the album descends back into low quality crap. Casual Affair starts this off as a monotone ear-assault that describes a love affair. From the tone of the song, not much action or passion exists in this instance of adultery. Then comes Far Too

P

e

e

r

ANCIENT UR FAIR VERONA HAVISHAM MANSION SAVATHI GROVE JONES FARM LONDONTOWNE MYTHICAL ATHENS

Young to Die, which may cause listeners to resent their youth keeping them from death, as hearing the auditory mediocrity may push some to suicidal thoughts. Next comes Collar Full, which lightens the mood with a bit of cheer, while still somehow remaining monotone, like a brighter, slightly happier shade of depressing gray. The album ends with a quite underrated and appropriately named song, The End of All Things. This tragic story of two lovers who would rather die together than live apart has more of a blue tone to it, and unlike most of the other songs on the album, shows an actual emotion. To conclude, the album T** W**** to L***, T** R*** to D**! (censored here because reading the title may induce vomiting among P!ATD fans) perfectly captures the title; it should not exist because of it‛s generally awful quality, but has some wonderful pieces that force listeners to buy. The album should, quite frankly, listen to This is Gospel. It would probably boost the album‛s self esteem, due to it‛s position as the black sheep of P!ATD albums. (Cegan Hinson)

Representation of Queer Women in the Media

Television, movies, and

advertisements, slowly but surely, have become more inclusive. Just last year 3.9% of characters featured on prime time television shows, a total of 32 characters, have the title of lesbian, gay, or bisexual (GLAAD foundation). While this improvement in modern television has had good impacts, the majority of the queer characters identify as gay men. Gay men make up 57% of the queer characters on tv, lesbians make up 41% of queer characters, and bisexual females make up just over 1% (GLAAD foundation). Currently, no known male bisexual characters are on prime time television. While this representation has had great impacts on the queer community, queer women simply do not have enough good representation. Even when queer women make an appearance, they have a history of being over-sexualized and portrayed inaccurately. A lot of the time, queer women characters have created a boost in male viewership and they may use them to do just that. The show The L Word has gained praise from critics and viewers alike for its representation of lesbians as normal people. While this show has done loads of good for the lesbian community, it still has its downside. In order to draw male viewership, almost all ads include barely clothed girls in sexual situations. In conclusion, the media is making strides in its representation of LGB people, but the sexualization and erasure of queer women's identities needs to stop. (Anna Marks)

An Abbreviated Conversation Which Happened in the Academic Corridors of Tallwood High School Regarding the Brief Evolution, and/or the Lack Thereof, of My Writing Skills Throughout the Course of One Solar Calendar Year (2015-2016 Common Era) Me: I looked at a few of my earlier pieces from this year, and they pretty much sucked. Mr. DeMott: Did I tell you the one story about me buying bread in Walmart? The version that involved that sidewalk? That’s a good story. Me: Yea, I think so, anyways, I think that I've improved a lot this year. Mr. DeMott: No, I don’t think I've actually told you this one, so let me tell you real quick... Me: Wait, wait, I've heard this story, anyways, I was looking through some of the stuff, compared to the things from the more recent past, my grammar choices were atrocious! Mr. DeMott: Should I describe the pavement first or how I get to the sidewalk? Me: *sighs in defeat* doesn't matter. :(

P

e

r

ANCIENT UR FAIR VERONA HAVISHAM MANSION SAVATHI GROVE JONES FARM LONDONTOWNE MYTHICAL ATHENS

Mr. DeMott: I think you’ll need both the description of the coloration of the pavement and the journey to the sidewalk to really get the essence of the full meaning behind the story. I might even go a tad bit back to give you context. So, it all started with a great explosion in what some might call the “Big Bang”…. Me: *another sigh, looks over shoulder as if for searching the hallway for help* (Reilly Stagg)

A well-known football coach

once said, “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” I disagree with his or her opinion. Winning isn’t “everything” or “the only thing”. Sure, winning is important, but there is much more than winning that goes into sports. I highly doubt any good athlete became a good athlete just so that they could win. Being on a team requires much more than a couple of individuals with a high-skill level. Being on a team requires teamwork, diligence, patience, hard-work and respect for your teammates. Winning cant’ be everything, nor can it be the only thing, it just isn’t that simple. Winning may be a goal, wish or aspiration, but it will never be everything or the only thing. Don’t get me wrong, winning is very important and I can definitely see why a wellknown football coach would want his team to win so badly. However, even “wellknown” football coach should know that there is more to being a team than winning. Whether a well-known NFL football coach, or just a small recreational league football coach, every coach should know the importance of a team. May 8th, 2016:

incorrect components to it. I do not doubt the importance of winning, however, I see plethora of more important components in teamwork. The idea that an individual would become a professional athlete solely so that they can win likely does not prevail. Existing on a team requires much more than highly skilled individuals with a strong desire to win. The word ‘team’ means diligence, teamwork, patience, hard work, and respect for one another. Winning could not even possibly initiate the fundamentals of teamwork. A goal could consist solely on the concept of winning, however never could a team exist exclusively on the idea of winning. Whether a well-known NFL football coach, or a juniors recreation league coach, every coach should appreciate the concept of having a team.

When I walked into the door of Mr. De Mott’s classroom on the first day of school, I thought that I had excellent writing abilities. I decided that I would use a prompt that I had written about in the beginning of the school year, and rewrite the same prompt to demonstrate my improvement in writing. After analyzing both writings, I came to the conclusion that I did not have the writing abilities in September that I have now. In September, I used incorrect punctuation, repetitive sentences, and novice word choice. Mr. De Mott’s class has taught me many useful concepts about writing. After taking this class, I can honestly say that I do not fear writing anymore. I feel more than prepared for future English courses that I will take throughout the remainder of high school and in college. This class constantly stressed me out, but in the end, I cannot thank Mr. De Mott enough for pushing me to become a better writer. (Jack Schmeiser)

“OH YEAH, A REVIEW ON A DAY OFF Ferris Bueller's Day Off has remained a classic in the comedy genre for generations. A senior in high school living in a suburb of Chicago named Ferris Bueller has had his fair share of days off, and he wants one more before he graduates. He fools his parents into believing he can't go to school due to sickness, and he overlooks no detail to make sure his story sticks, with a snoring noise coming from his audio system and a weighted door system that makes the dummy in his bed appear to roll over asleep whenever the door opens. His precautions border on the verge of unbelievable, but remain clever enough to pass as possible. Word of Ferris' illness spreads across school, and it quickly becomes the topic of discussion of the kids in the few scenes that take place at school, with one student collecting a "Save Ferris" fund. Ferris convinces his tight friend Cameron to tag along even against his wish, and even persuades him to take his dad's Ferrari along for the ride, although an even more prized possession than Cameron in his father's eyes. School principal Ed Rooney despises Ferris because of the negative influence of his carefree attitude on many other students, and suspects that his 10th day off from school has no legitimate explanation and that Ferris has skipped once again. The Hollywood Reporter agrees that Jeffrey Jones did quite well in his portrayal of the "hypertensive, crazed dean". Again, Ferris' schemes seem too clever and audacious when Cameron calls Rooney impersonating the father of Sloanne Peterson, Ferris' girlfriend to report that her grandmother just died. Rooney chews out the alleged Mr. Peterson and calls him out as Ferris, when moments later Ferris himself calls the office and says that he couldn't attend school because he didn't feel well, and asks if his sister could bring home any assigned work for him. A mortified Rooney collects Sloanne from class and takes her out in

front of the school as instructed by "Mr. Peterson", and soon after Cameron and Ferris arrive in the Ferrari to pick her up. She gets in the car after exchanging a kiss with her "father", and the three head into Chicago's urban area. Avoiding several encounters with Ferris' father as he does his daily rounds in the city the three experience much of what the big city has to offer, which includes visiting an art museum, having lunch at a fine restaurant, and participating in a parade, often right next to Ferris' father narrowly escaping his noticing. Rooney invades Ferris' home in hopes of finding him not sick, but his attempts end quite painfully. After their visit to the city, Cameron, Ferris, and Sloanne return to Cameron's house and on the way home discover the valet that took care of the care when they went for lunch had added extra miles. A terrified Cameron knows not what to do, and after Ferris' good-hearted attempts to turn the miles back so that Cam's father doesn't notice bear no fruit, Cam decides to stand up to his father who pays more attention to the Ferrari than him and trashes the car. Ferris' sister has also left school in an attempt to catch Ferris red-handed, but once she finds Rooney in her home she calls the police on him. At the end of the day, Ferris must return home before his parents do. He rushes through the neighborhood, going though the houses and yards of others in an attempt to get home as quickly as possible. He reaches the backdoor, but finds it locked, and who else should show up but Rooney next to him with the key. However, Ferris' sister opens the back door to let him in, and throws Rooney's wallet in the backyard, next to the rather unfriendly-to-visitors guard dog of the Buellers. Ferris gets back in bed just in time to make it appear he has not left bed all day, and he gets away with it all. John Hughes' classic of the 80's doesn’t fail to entertain. It portrays a witty teen succeeding in battle against the sometimes boring, overly-structured world of high school. Although not a good example, many root for Ferris as a testament against the status quo, and that sometimes one has got to live a little. According to

They would yell, scream and fight it all out Poor little child shuddered out in fright She cried out their names, but they didn’t have a doubt. The fighting parents didn’t reach her sight, As she ran away to the thrashing sea. As she got to the edge of the scarce ocean, She cried out and screamed, “Why can’t we stand free”. She fell on her knees from all these commotions.

Her parents stood silently behind, Watching their daughter silently cry. The poor family doesn’t seem to find, All they need to clarify,

A Sonnet for Lily Let’s talk about a dear friend named Lily She made folks laugh so much their heads would hurt! She would wear clothes that seemed bright and silly Now, she lie under a pile of dirt She got brutally murdered by a Stan Stan ‘loved’ her, but acted really obsessed! He would wait for Lily in a white van When she ran from him, he would get upset… Lily and Stan acted like such love birds! Later, he caught her with another man He shouted, “SHE WILL PAY FOR THIS, GREEN TURD!” But Lily had only formed a small band Oh my, “WHY DID IT HAVE TO END THIS WAY!” “Because…” Mary said, “IT APRIL FOOLS DAY!” (Donyale Wright)

Very cute, how their little voices “meow” Oh no! They just dropped something, ker-plow! All your love for them vanished in the air As you yell, “SPRINKLES! DON’T YOU EVEN DARE!” Rise…fall…rise… the rhythm when cats sleep, One small noise, they open an eye for a peep You just took a picture of them, big mistake They leave the room, for a place they will not wake Pat, pat, pat the sound of cats’ feet Time to eat! The Dance Around I can dance, but my hips don’t sway like that. They tell me, “White girls can’t dance.” I can trace six generations of ancestors to far off lands. They never ask if I can speak my ancestors’ language. I say, “I love you for who you are.” They say, “You wouldn’t understand, you’re not like me.” I say, “Everyone is worthy of love.” They say, “You can’t understand, you’re white.” I know a whitewashed history. I know not to label them. I know not to say certain words. I know to hold my tongue. But they say that to me. They have the freedom to say what they want: “Hey, White Girl! Go to Target; they have a Starbucks there.” “Hey, Blondie! You must be stupid, right?” I did not choose blonde hair and blue eyes. I did not choose my privilege. I will choose right, though— Choose to understand anger, Meet malice with love, Answer unspoken questions, And dance my “white girl” dance In a colorful world.

Entente “Promise that you will always remember me and the memories.” The final words he said before he left her life forever. “People only ask you to remember them if they plan to leave” She responded, not knowing the next day he would be gone. She remembered that moment so vividly now. The way he dressed, the way he looked so broken. She tried so hard to forget it all but it never seemed to get out of her head. The words, the emotions, the heartbreak, him. All of it overwhelmed her, two years now and she still has flashbacks of that night. Maybe she just needs to forget about him. If he really cared he would have stayed. But what if he had a good reason to leave? No. no excuse would do. Maybe she just needed to get her mind off of things right now and take a walk. So she did exactly that, she put on her coat and took a walk. Her walk began peacefully; it got her mind off of the situation for a while. But then she saw a figure standing behind a tree looking at her. So she sped up a bit to see what would happen and it followed her. She started to become very worried so she started to run; not knowing her destination but she knew she had to get away. She ran and ran until she collided with a person, well she collided with him.

She looked up and saw those eyes. The eyes that she last saw broken two years ago. She could not believe who she saw, the man who left her standing in the rain broken into pieces. They both just looked at each other, none of this seemed real to her. She finally got up and looked at him and said “I remembered, but maybe that was my first mistake” and then she ran away. She could not look at him any longer, he left and she missed him. She would rather take her chances being cold and harsh than admitting that she missed him. She must have ran for a couple of hours because when she finally decided to go home night had fallen. She got home and saw a note on her front porch in his handwriting. ‘Missing someone is like only having one shoe on. You can still walk, but it’s with a limp. When you are missing somebody, your heart is out of balance. It still beats, but it skips. It limps from being broken’ and then she finally understood. (Isabelle Mendez)

Cross Country All the training, all the pain, all the miles, lead up to this moment, conference championships. I resided as the only freshmen who made it, top seven in the cross country team. All the sore muscles, sweat, and races ran, seemed worth it. Warming up, we scoped out our competition. I felt heavily out classed, the few freshmen from other teams that made it all had a year of age on me. Skipping third grade made me the youngest person at the meet. I prepared myself for the possibility that I may end up in last place. We finished our warm ups, put our spikes on, and headed on to the line. I had done this so many times before, but my heart raced faster than ever. We ran on the Kellam course, made up of mostly gravel, the most uncomfortable material to run on. The girls’ still raced, and we saw the runners coming up on their second lap. Our fastest girl, Maggie, who normally places in the top five, much further behind than anticipated. She ran an even faster time than before, and her expression showed it, yet the competition just much harder than anticipated. We had to stay on schedule so the announcer said that we’d start before all the girls finished. As we sprinted to stay warm, my mind raced. Almost every runner that I saw I remembered how fast their times were. Jonathan Logmagda stood there, one of the best runners in the state, who had already broken fifteen minutes in the 5k. Our team consisted of one senior, three juniors, two sophomores, and me, the only freshmen. Every other person looked severely faster than me, so I knew I needed to push it this time. My record for the 5k remained 20:41, but at this course with the gravel, only 21:49. We did our team chant, lined up, and prepared for the gun to go off. “On your mark. Get set,” the coordinator says as all bend down, “BANG.” The gun goes off and we explode in a stampede of running. I normally go out fast in races trying to keep up with the others around me, but this time I knew almost all outmatched me. I decide to keep at a more relaxed pace than all around me. As we turn into the gravel filled forest I see only around five or so runners behind me. “Not in last place,” I told myself. I tried to remain calm and steady my breathing. As we

exit the forest we head onto the seemingly everlasting grass straight away, and I noticed some passing me. I decided now existed a good time to kick, as I passed three or four people. As we entered the next forest, marking the first mile, I heard our coach call out our times. “6:43 Luca! I hear him yell. This pace, not fast for me, as I ran my personal record with a sub six first mile. I knew I needed to pick it up, but my legs ached already. As we exited the forest we just completed the first lap and we saw the timer at the finish line. The clock read 11:04. If I kept this pace I would end up with a time of 22:08 which I almost ran for our first race in the season. As we entered the same forest we did on the first lap I started to push it. I breathed heavily, at this point my lungs gasped for air, and my calves cramped up. I just tried to stay on my forefoot and push my legs harder onto the gravel. Surging every curve, I passed 5 or so people. I found a good pace to keep running behind Richard, one of our juniors. As we exited the forest, I decided to push even harder and ended up passing him. Our coach, waiting to call our second mile but I could not even hear him this time. I saw the other junior ahead of me Frank, and I made it my goal to pass him before I finished. We entered the second forest, and I started to kick even though we still had half a mile left. Normally you kick when you have a 400 or 200 meters left, I ran harder than I had ever before. Ditches surrounded the forest, the pain remained so harsh, I actually considered tripping and falling in just to catch a small break. As I exited the forest I could see the finish line 400 meters away, running right next to Frank. At this point, my body had no energy left, but I decided to sprint and give it every single thing that I had left. I finally crossed the line, on the verge of throwing up. Every inch of my body ached. But all that work I had gone through for the past five months seemed worth it. I finished with a time of 20:43. Not my best overall, but on the course we ran on, I ran over a minute faster than all of my other times. For the next week, the race completely destroyed my body. My legs hurt every time I walked, I knew I pushed my body too hard. But to see how much I improved over the season, I did not regret a single mile. (Luca Pfeiffer)

Cavemouth Once a young girl found herself lead away from the sun. The girl develops a constant fear of the world around her. Soon she was found and she thought those who had come for her had good intentions. She willingly follows the path they designed for her and she never strays, accepting undeserved punishment.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

The sound of the watch resonates off the cold, damp cave walls. Having heard the snap of the whip, she races further into the dark, ominous abyss. Panic swells within her chest. Will she have enough time? Will she ever meet their expectations? Can she find a way to escape this never-ending nightmare?

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

The ticking of the clock seems to match her heart’s beating. It seems to haunt her very thoughts. Suddenly, she hears nothing. No ticking, no snapping of whips, even the soft pattering of the liquid dripping off the walls has ceased to make noise. Just the musical lub-dubbing of her heartbeat.

Feeling her long-lost courage blossoming inside her soul, she emerges. Once exiting the cave that once held her own personal hell, she finds that those she once feared have gone away. She vows to never return to this place. With every step she takes away from the entrance of the cave, her inner strength grows.

Lub-Dub-Lub-Dub

Those who once tortured her cannot control her any longer. Their incessant whip silenced, they can no longer keep her in silence while pushing her against the cliff’s edge. She no longer desires to jump.

Lub-Dub-Lub-Dub

Now she forges her own path to follow. She climbs over her mountain, throwing the ever controlling timepiece over the edge. And now, with the golden light of the returned sun warming her cheeks, overwhelming peace surges through her body and she laughs. The missing girl had returned, and now her journey towards happiness had begun.

The aura of her sanctuary sends the worshippers above. She sings a spell that drenches them in an ozone of a yearning desire. Their hearts pour out to her in a blazing fire. Sitting in her presence makes the air around glisten. When quiet falls, the comatose guests listen. The entrancement swallows all, but do not mistaken this as harm. The Three Day Fly One day, a fly wanted the world for himself. All that he wanted would be contained in what he called a “positive life. Even though flies live for only three day, this is what he dreamed of, this is what he lived for. He wanted a crown on his head, and would tell the other flies how they needed to live. He would try as hard as he could to break through a brick wall to live like this king. He thought he deserved to have things, so therefore, he looked to the green, because this, more than anything else, defined success. He also knew, however, that having a family and other good three day flies by his side like luggage will take him wherever he needed to get to on his journey. So, accidentally perhaps, or perhaps through divine intervention, he picked up his metaphorical eyeglasses and at once saw clearly. He only had thousands of ommatidia to see the myriad of perspectives, but now he saw these perspectives with more clarity, afterall he had put on the eye glasses. Even so, he wanted power like humans had. He felt he would impact the world and give the world new knowledge and different viewpoints, He wanted teeth to help chew food. He feels he could bring a whole new dish to the symbolic table. This time, though, he thought his most kingly of thoughts, one that revolved around serving others, rather than getting service from others.

Two Halves Make a Whole For the longest time I wondered why my parents fought so much. When I got older and matured more, I realized my dad caused most arguments. My dad always started fights over money. So I grew up thinking money maintains the biggest role in a household. When my parents got a divorce and my sister, my mom, and I moved into a new house, my mom helped me realize money doesn’t matter in a home. Money actually holds the smallest role in a home. I learned that protecting and caring for my family holds the most important role. If my parents didn’t get a divorce, money and personal gain would control my thoughts. So basically, if my parents didn’t get a divorce, one could describe me with a single word. Selfish. Which shows how a divorce, ultimately lead to my peace.

Fasting Time “Hey look!” Mary said finding a feather. “Wow, that’s cool, and look ahead, there’s a whole trail,” said Papa. Mary looked and gasped at the beautiful scenery. Seeing flowers of all kind, with vines and branches in her walkway, she burst forth in front of her grandpa. “Don’t go too fast,” he said. “Papa, don’t be silly…a whole world is here; we can come every day!”

And so they did.

Every day, they met here, right on the feather, at 9:30. Each time, they found a new item to look at. Then one day Papa said, “follow me.” He quickly went in front of his eager granddaughter, excitingly, ready to show her the tree house. “Woahhh,” she gasped, gazing at what seemed to her a mansion. She excitedly jumped forth, and ran up the slide. For hours, or moments, she did this as he watched her.

“Don’t go too fast, Sweetie,” he said as she rode down the slide. The next day, Papa had fishing poles in his hands. He waited for ten minutes still not within sight of Mary. He walked to and fro, and worry furrowed on his brow. “Boo! Gotcha!” Mary popped out of the foliage, covered up with vines. They laughed and Mary said, “Pap, you though I ditched you, huh? I was coming, you just needed to wait for me.” He looked to the heavens, the way they clouded over, then to his fishing pole, its green line catching a gust of wind, now dancing heavenward, but still attached. He gripped his pole harder, so that the veins that held his lifeblood seemed to bulge over in his hands. He looked down at Mary, and breathed out a smile, “okay, Sweetie”. Going to the feather and walking the path continued to be their everyday thing, until one day, Mary found herself waiting at the feather for about three quarters of an hour. There was no sign of him. “Papa,” she yelled, “I’m right here; if you are trying to scare me, I’m not scared.” Her last phrase echoed in the vast and emptying sky as if the clouds themselves were chanting it: “I’m not scared, I’m not scared” She cried out again, then began her journey home, listlessly passing ambulances and firetrucks. When she finally reached the door step, she saw her mother and her brother walking to the car. “Momma! I’m right here; what’s going on?”

Her mom knelt down to even herself with Mary’s height and sobbed out, “Honey, Papa’s been in the car accident. He was rushing home supposedly. They’re taking him to the hospital now. Mary didn’t know what to think. “No!” she said angrily, “He can’t be! He was supposed to be with me right at 9:30!” She broke down into tears. When she got to the hospital, she came into his room, slowly opening the door. She climbed on top of what she could see of Papa. She ran her fingers against the tubes on his face. She looked at the bandages around his head. Mary started crying uncontrollably. “Papa, what happened? Why did you do this?” She cried, “did you go too fast, Papa…” She paused, thinking about all his warnings, “Papa, you went too fast, didn’t you?, didn’t you, didn’t you?” She raised her voice over the sound of the ongoing beep emitted from the machine. Then in slow motion, it ended in the flash of white doctor coats, Mary being peeled off, her hand gripped in a fist, then, the release, the fingers spread, the fishing waters calm now, and the feather floating down from her hand, landing precariously on Papa’s chest, not rising, not falling.

The Silence of Symbols Fish Three hours—turns, twists, bridges, fields, trees—we drove to Camden County in North Carolina to surprise my best friend, Alexis, at her grandpa’s house. I sat next to Morgan, Alexis’s little sister, while we drove. When we finally arrived at the house, Alexis practically tackled me because of her excitement. Her grandpa’s house sat on the oceanfront with a winding creek behind it. For several hours after I arrived, we played in the ocean water in front of the house. The whole time, we laughed and smiled. Every now and then, we felt a fish swim across our feet and we jumped because it tickled. We only ever saw one fish at a time. The fish swam alone. They did not seem to have a best friend to lean on, to splash with, and to confide in.

Alexis promised she would take me again. The next time I came, I could stay the whole weekend. We sat in her room and made bracelets, and we hugged despite the sunburns because we would always stay best friends. After all, best friends still hug each other, even when they hurt.

Cocoon Red, ripe apples danced through our minds as we headed west on highway 64—piled in the same red car as when we went to Camden County, three hours in a different direction. We stopped for a bathroom break, and Ms. Beth started feeling bad—really bad. She kept smiling, but the baby stopped moving, so we turned to the hospital instead of the orchard. We sat in the hospital for a few hours while waiting for my parents to come. When they got there, we waited for a few more hours, while the doctors checked up on her. After several long hours, we finally heard that the baby’s heart still beat, and we could go home. My dad took Alexis and I home, and my mom took Ms. Beth. We all went home because the hurricane got closer, and we needed to take care of Ms. Beth.

They stayed that Sunday and Monday because school closed, so Alexis and I thought we would make a special surprise for our parents. With a surprise in mind, we boarded ourselves up in the kitchen with blankets over the open doorways, making the kitchen our little cocoon. We washed the dishes, cleaned the microwave, wiped down the counters, and we ended with the best treat in mind: brownies. The smell filled the house, and gave away our surprise, but gooey brownies and snuggles made it all worthwhile. Our stomachs rumbled as we waited for the brownies to finish, and we joyfully rode out the storm—together.

Blue He moved around a lot, for a horse. Oliver survived so much drama. First, he got too big, leaving his blue feed bucket behind. Then, Alexis accidentally put her arm through a window because the owner did not take care of the barn. Soon, the drama of the household that owned the barn caused us to move again. Finally, after moving so much, we found the perfect place for Oliver. It had enough space for him, they took care of the stables, and the family loved each other and us.

Not many places can house a big, young, and energetic horse, but he finally had a home. Then he got sick. He could not walk right; it hurt his back. We could not let him lay down, even though he wanted to. Alexis and I distracted ourselves when we did not have to walk Oliver by painting the barn white, not blue, or feeding the other horses. We all stayed up late at the barn for him. After twelve hours of trying to help, we could not let him suffer any longer. The vet had to put him to sleep. For days, Alexis and I just hugged each other and cried. All of us loved him. I felt the blue of the night sky crash down on me that night—the kind of blue only noticed the first time a loved one dies.

Wall Nearly a year passed before we talked again. Alexis went into high school, but I had only started eighth grade. Ms. Beth started calling herself Mrs. Beth. They should have moved to Arizona, but they had to come back because Morgan’s dad caused issues for the family. We said our goodbyes several months before, but they returned after a month. I heard about them coming back, so I wanted

to go and see Alexis. We spent the weekend together, but she invited another friend—one I did not know. They acted like best friends and kind of shunned me because of my younger age and lower grade. I came to hang out with my best friend, but instead I read in the corner while they looked at each other’s Instagrams. We made some bad decisions that night, but I decided to tag along so I could feel included. I noticed then that Alexis subtly started laying down bricks between us, but I never saw it as a wall until she laid the last brick so I could no longer see her, no matter how deeply I cared for her.

Teeth Several months have passed since I saw her last. I stay in my world, she stays in hers, and I do not know much about her anymore. A couple weeks ago, my mom told me that Alexis ran away from home, and went missing for two days. Thankfully, they found her safe, but when they gave her a drug test, she popped positive for Xanax, sleeping pills, OxyContin, and pot. I broke down. My best friend, the person who taught me what a best friend means, became addicted to drugs that numb her

life. She wants not to feel. When I think about what makes her choose this, I picture sharp teeth gnawing at the beautiful girl, with a beautiful smile, that held me up, and laughed away all my tears.

Eyeglasses I knew that friends would come and go, but Alexis and I always went the same way. We could not see that time would separate us. Blinded by friendship and love, two young girls did not need the eyeglasses of maturity to see each other. Time creates distance—creates lonely fish. Now, I swim alone, without my friend to splash along. Our cocoon burst open into the reality of pain and loss. The red of apples, white barns, and the blue of a sad night sky have fallen away, and only a thick gray wall stands between us. While Alexis fights the sharpened, painful teeth of addiction and loss, I feel blinded in another way. Friends do come and go, but now I see through the eyeglasses of a friendship lost, how beautiful friendships grow, and how far they can fall.

Hitler’s Last Photograph And who might roam streets in his military uniform? The adult Adolf Hitler, Germany's bad leader! What’d he dream for as a young, little boy? And did he behave, or act very badly? Who owns this well-known face, whose scowling eyes and evil look? Whose head full of death thoughts, oh, such a crook! Student, child, and a friend? Where have his feet left footprints throughout his whole life? A school, a house, a playground, or a library, did he meet the Burgermeister's daughter? Horrible, murderous man, Germany's worst nightmare, he started killing Jews long, long ago, and before he started killing, not one saw the sign, humans saw society as fine, and lived their usual, everyday lives, but Hitler had written his plan in a book, and a little bit later, he carried out his plan, Hitler seen on the street meant bad news, and if he saw a Jew, he would quickly kill them. Knock, knock, knock, the person who murdered arrived. Many guns, dead bodies, and Nazi officers,

Boom, boom, the sound of all the guns that Hitler and his army used to kill Jews. Cooking, cleaning, shopping, caring for family, and more everyday activities kept happening and then one certain day, terror occurred in these towns. And all of this happened for one reason. My house Everyone loves the houses along the block. All the beautiful décor and lawn ornaments, but those are on the outside. They’re all disappointed when they go inside. Because the walls appear damaged and have holes in them, the floors have mold on them, and things are falling apart left and right. Yet people go back to them, and they get hurt. But they still go back and that’s what I don’t understand. I’m smart and stay out of the houses, because even the outside doesn’t look that pretty to me anyway. My house however, people stay away from. It’s an old style Victorian Era house, the outside walls are dark and covered in prickly vines, which people tend to think is scary. So they stay away from my house. No one goes inside my house, which makes me sad. I don’t take change my house because of that, no one will want to go inside my house anyway. But one day, someone decides to venture inside my house. Though it’s something I never expected, because no one visits my house. They saw something that the others didn’t, the warm orange-red colour of the walls with pictures all over of beautiful past events, crystal chandeliers hanging from the high rise ceiling, a great big fireplace in the living room, a modern style spiral staircase, beautiful hardwood floors lined with comfortable furniture, many bedrooms fit for a big family or a lot of guests, and then there’s my attic. My attic has a plentiful of boxes filled with old memories, when people used to visit. The house used to be beautiful on the outside too, before mean people decided to wreck it and make my house seem scary to everyone when that’s not the truth. If people took the time to actually go inside my house, they’d see how beautiful it really is. Until then, my house will only be visited by that one special person who’s gonna change my house forever. (Sophie Bernaquez)

Continuation of

Coming Home After that night when everyone thought Augustus Waters died it made Hazel Grace realize that he was her little infinity. She went to see Augustus every day that he was in the hospital. Hazel Grace did feel bad for leaving Isaac in the “Literal Heart of Jesus” by himself, but she felt that Augustus needed her there. During the Visits with Augustus he was still the same old corny joking guy except now he looked drained and mostly all his jokes were about him dying. Hazel Grace thought it was kind of inhuman how he could joke about him almost dying so quickly, but she couldn’t just tell him to stop joking about his life. After about a month of Hazel Grace visiting Augustus in the hospital it was time for him to come home. She greeted him the first day he came home with a trophy that read “being awesome is deadly!” When Augustus read the trophy he instantly smirked. “And yet you still cease to amaze me Hazel Grace Lancaster.” He said we a slight smirk. Augustus Waters was unable to go down to his man cave in the basement because of the osteosarcoma spreading to his lungs. So instead he was stuck upstairs in his so called “normal human space room”. When they both made it upstairs Augustus looked at the trophy again and then at Hazel “Where do you find such magnificent items with sentimental value?” Hazel giggled a little because she actually just found it at some lame old garage sale, but she thought it was best if she did kill his moment. “I got it made just for you, the awesome Augustus Waters” he looked at her with so much love and adornment. Hazel felt as if she didn’t deserve any of it. She was going to die soon anyway. Why would anyone love her, she is filled with death. Literally. “Well Augustus Waters this will stand as a farewell until tomorrow.” “Leaving so soon. Why?” The truth is Hazel Grace could not deal with the fact that she knew that soon she

would be gone. She would be leaving Augustus here helplessly in love with her. She was breaking his heart slowly but then suddenly it would be all at once and she didn’t know when it would be. “Hazel Grace, if you’re thinking about you breaking my heart again please stop! It would be a pleasure to have my heart broken by you Hazel Grace Lancaster” Augustus Waters said nonchalantly. “Augustus Waters, I am crazy, stupid in love with you” Hazel Grace said referencing their favorite chick flick. “But there is something that I have been hiding from you. I wanted to tell you the night you went into the hospital but I was too scared.” “Okay. Continue Hazel Grace” Augustus said inquisitively. “We stopped the Chemo Therapy Augustus, I’m in too much pain and the Chemo Therapy seems to only be making it worse. Tonight will be my last day outside. I am going to die soon Augustus and sooner than the both of us thought. I came here to say hello and goodbye at once. I love you Augustus Waters. I love you like the Dutch man loves Anna’s mother in An Imperial Affliction. I only have a few days left and I felt like you needed to know that I really am thankful for the little infinity that you gave me Augustus Waters. I leave tonight for the hospital” Augustus Waters sat there dumbfounded. He was silently weeping and wouldn’t even look Hazel in the eyes. It was now 11 pm at the hospital. Hazel grace had already filled out all the papers and was situated in her room when in rolled Augustus Water. “Hazel Grace, I am here to spend your final moments with you and there is no one who can tell me different.” “Oh and by the way, I love you Hazel Grace Lancaster.” Augustus said with a sly smile. He rolled close to the bedside of Hazel Grace. She laid there on her side and looked at Augustus in pure amazement and admiration. They both talked for hours before finally falling asleep at 3 am.

The next morning Augustus Waters woke up to a beautiful Hazel Grace. He slowly got up from his wheel chair and made is way towards her bed. He looked at her skeptically. “Hazel Grace” he said while shaking her. He went and check for a pulse on her neck. When he reached for her neck and felt nothing but coldness. No beat. No heat. No more Hazel Grace Lancaster. Augustus Waters fell to the floor in defeat. She was gone. The love of his teenage life was gone forever. He crawled to his wheel chair and climbed in. he rolled to the door and turned around and said aloud “I love you Hazel Grace whether you are here or there. You will always be in my mind for the rest of my life because you were my best friend my soul mate and more importantly my infinity.” He said after he blew a kiss and rolled out not looking back to her. He let a nurse know of what had become of Hazel Grace. He cried as he called his mom to pick him up. He was just Gus now. Just plain old Gus. No more Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters. Juan’s Thoughts About Sara “Like a river flows, surely to the sea.” Sara, oh Sara means the world to me. From the moment I saw her when she dropped her book, I knew I had to help her to get a second look. Her green eyes hold secrets and smiles that put me in a trance, I want her so badly, if only she’d give me a chance. She did! She fills me with electricity; I can’t believe this feeling. And when we kissed for the first time.. Wow, it left me reeling. My dearest Sara, years from that first encounter here she stands With me at the altar while holding your hands. (Maiyah Alexander)

Who Are You? A girl who has read about prisoners of Summer being tied down by their wrist with chains forced to be slaves but are whipped painfully. I am a girl who has read of monsters in human skins, Fae who can turn into beasts with claws and fangs. Men like Rowan and Tamlin who mark their territory with love and pain. I am a girl who has taken the path that few have taken. A path lit with a fiery fangirl heart along cliffs and beaches made of words and emotions. I balance on the edge of a cliff. One sides holds the promise of a normal life full of soft grass and hopes. The other side hold sharp rocks full of pain and feeling and love. One of these sides would show me just how human I am and the other will show me ow a human copes with things. I choose the side of feeling, the side of feeling free in love and pain, I choose the cliffs. The feelings like sharp pieces of flint fired from the bows of of Oliver and Clint. Amanda Linch

Along my long tedious path, winding, meandering, seemingly eternal, the canopy of sea green watches me silently. They stand as walls, confining me, forcing me to stay on the road. I don’t really know what lurks in the foliage. They wouldn’t allow that. For all I know a dangerous creature could live there. Or perhaps something unknown? I wouldn’t know. I don’t know a lot of things. Well, they whisper that into my ear. Onwards, my feet drag along the path. The trees branches serve as arrows, leading me, pointing me to my unknown destination. My destiny they say. They know where it leads. They always know. One day, watching the trees once more, I see a break through the thick of the forest. It beckons me to leave the path. I want to. I really want to. I turn my head and I stare at the opportunity of escape, but my body stubbornly faces forward. I get frustrated. Why now of all times, when the option to leave presents itself, I have to cower away? I scream at myself. Move. I don’t. I can’t. Move. A twitch of my fingers. MOVE. A side step of my foot.

The forest doesn’t notice yet. “Go!” A voice calls from within. It starts with one wobbly step in front of another, then another and another! I feel the forest getting denser as I slowly make my way off the path. I’m gaining balance in my footing. I’m going faster. The light of the opening grows like a living being, pulsing, warm and welcome. The forest turns hot and enraged at my disobedience. The sharp branches and winding creepers tug and pull at my clothing. They pull at me roughly, scraping and biting at my inexperienced skin. The forest screeches an ungodly wail of anger and gnashes its teeth, but I don’t hear it. I can only hear the wind rushing past my being as the light grows larger and larger and larger. Until, I’m out. The light dances freely on my skin. The forest can’t reach me here. I walk to the edge of the earth where the land drops off into a cliff. My feet scrape the dirt there, fascinated. A few pebbles fall and bounce off the cliff’s jagged sides. Curiously, I peek over the edge and my smile broadens. I know now that this place serves as my destination, my leaping point. My journey finally begins here. No more forest for me. Without looking out back, I jump down and down and down into the opening. Sarena Vazquez
