Jerusalem 28/12/2021 Tuesday afternoon Sketching in Jerusalem, at the Israel Museum grounds with design students from the Holon Institute of Technology.

Sketching with students has become a tradition, both in Patras University and at Holon Institute of Technology, given that the circumstances allow it to take place (pandemic, etc.).

This year, the sketching session, in the middle of the omicron mutation of COVID19, was combined with a guided tour of the exhibition ‘Picasso to Kentridge’ at the Israel Museum.

The sketching session took place right before the guided tour.

The Museum Shop Arcade

This theme involved locating the vanishing point for the perspective and building the entire view as a constructed perspective drawing.

The drawing was finished on site, and then scanned and worked further digitally.

The Museum Entrance Pool

This theme involved locating the vanishing point for the perspective and building the entire view as a constructed perspective drawing. Especially, as the shading blinds of the façade required a very accurate layout based on the vanishing point.

The drawing was finished on site, and then scanned and worked further digitally.

The Museum Main Entrace

This theme involved locating the vanishing point for the perspective and building the entire view as a constructed perspective drawing.

The drawing was undertaken by several students with mixed results.

The Greek Monastery of the Cross Adjacent to the Museum is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Cross and a park.

Elias created the two quick sketches below, when showing students different views to focus on.

FREE-HAND SKETCHBOOK : JERUSALEM

By ELIAS V. MESSINAS, ARCHITECT and DESIGN STUDENTS from the HOLON INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ISRAEL The free-hand sketching session took place on Tuesday 28 December 2021.

The session took place within the framework of the course ‘Architect’s Drawing’ at Holon Institute of Technology, Israel for first-year design students in 2021-2022.

A group of twenty students joined the session. The session included free-hand drawing at the open spaces of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, based on the principles of perspective taught in the course, and a guided tour to the exhibition ‘Picasso to Kentridge’ at the Israel Museum.

The sketching session was guided by Elias, the sketches were completed on site, then retouched digitally, and finally, uploaded to the course board in MIRO.

Elias’ writes and sketches in sketchbooks since the late 1980s. Elias’ sketchbooks contain sketches, drawings and notes from his travels, teaches and leisure drawing in sites and cities in Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Elias’ sketchbooks have been exhibited at the Yale Art & Architecture (USA, 1990), the Athens College Theater (Greece, 1995), the Jerusalem Theater (Israel, 2002), the Israel Museum exhibition ‘Journeys’ (20142015), and VITRINA Gallery at Holon Institute of Technology (Israel, 2019).
