RESULTS DOSSIER. VILLENA 2013

elcasc is a sociocultural renewal project set in Villena, Spain, which aims to investigate and transform aspects of the historic city centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social and urban fabric. The course was developed during 10 days in the summer of 2013, from july 29th to august 8th, by a 100-strong multi-disciplinary group of students and young professionals from around the world.

elcasc consisted of 6 practical workshops and a theoretical seminar about the historical centre reactivation through different disciplines like architecture, design, art, urbanism, restoration, sociology, economy, engineering or audiovisual communication. Zuloark

The practical workshops were devised and delivered as a series of low-cost architectural, artistic and cultural interventions to draw on and celebrate the city’s local heritage and socio-cultural patterns. Several renowned tutors, with previous experience in each study field, were in charge to run these workshops.:

The theoretical seminar theme was the recovery of historical centres. It was led and coordinated by the professor Gabino Ponce, Director of the Heritage management Master of the Alicante University. Thanks to the support of the cultural project funds from the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (UPV) a student competition was called to design and build the main pavilion of elcasc Villena 2013. Two proposals won ex-aequo this competition:

// MAIN PAVILION

The proposal called nCAJA was made by Sonia Asensi Aracil, Nadine Saskia Strzelczyk and David Rafael Baeza Costa. It consisted in defining some different spaces by constructing dividing walls made with drink boxes. This project was selected as winner because it offered the required spaces, regarding material reuse, time viability and low-budget thanks to the possibility of a sponsorship.

The second winner proposal was JR028. It was created by JosĂŠ Luis Villar Pastor and Rosa Fuentes FernĂĄndez. The idea of colonizing different spaces with a recycled system, based materials from the local textile industry, was really attractive and poetic. The lower capability to define enclosed spaces with different privacy degrees made this project become a changing installation, adapting itself and receiving the name of migrating pavilion.

MONU-BENCH CAVES & URBAN PARLIAMENT

Monu-bench caves and Urban Parliament was a workshop that joined in a unique intervention the concepts of identity, heritage and urban space studied by PKMN in their previous Monubench experiences, and the Urban Parliaments by Zuloark that try to offer a place for the city to talk about itself. The Monubench field proposed the drawing of the interior geometry of the 5 caves located in the way up to the castle for reproducing them afterwards as a fake, showing the local identity of this feature as a copy. They made the interior structural framework of all the different spaces with screwed wooden planks. This system would become afterwards the roofing of the resulting artifact. The Urban Parliament field focused on the lower part, building a series of surfaces for sitting with wood planks which configuration is adaptable. The result of both fields is a urban wooden artifact capable of colonizing different public spaces and inhancing its urban value providing a place to rest and debate, strengthing the local feeling for all the neighbours.

THE CLAY IN THE URBAN STAGE

The workshop The clay in the Urban Stage proposed to study and work on the use of an ancient and spreadly used material as the clay. The workshop was divided in two different phases, the first to learn to model, material features and work techniques: material preparation, manual shaping, the drying and the oven. The shaping of these pieces was made by using home tools as spoon, knife and fork. In the second phase they proposed the generation and construction of an artistical piece using the clay in different ways in the urban space of an square. This artistical piece tried to represent conceptually one of the specific features of the houses in the city centre: the caves. On this artistic piece, they tried to give an identity to this odd urban space, that appeared from the demolition of a couple of old houses. With this idea, they generated a new landscape with a metallic mesh supported on the walls and the ground giving a huge expressive strength using clay and some other natural materials.

PLAYTIME VILLENA. INTERACTION & RESPONSE

Playtime was set out with the methodology as a process workshop in which the result was not settled. The only premises were the subdivision in several phases of interaction and response, implication and contextualization with places and agents: 1// Observation 2// Drift 3// Mediation 4// Action The knowledge received by the participants in the workshops consisted of the use of empathy and answer as a civic participation tool. The workshop itself was an example of the conflict-coexistence when you need to interact with the environment. The interaction and response consisted in a series of 3 different dinners in 3 different spots of the historical centre during 3 nights. The dinners took place in the urban space and were formed by 2 participants from the workshop and 2 citizenship agents selected according the criterea established in the drift. Then the interchange of knowledge comes from the usage of the historical centre as a public space.

LIVING TERRITORIES. LEARNING SPACES.

The workshop outlined a strategy for generating socio-educative and cultural actions in the way of a Rehabilitation Office for the Historical Centre would do to prevent social exclusion. The idea of the work was to compare it with the real plan established by the Special Plan for the Historical Centreﾂｴs Protection, suggesting some updatings and improvements. First they made a study of the social and educative present situation to base on our actions. For this they used several tools in their work as the interview, the observation and the data picking up. Different collectives from the historical centre, as neighbour associations, cultural associations, city councils and the inhabitants were the reference and the base to discover the present situation. The results of this workshop were several conciliatory socio-educative activities as a collective limewashing, a batucada, an african dances workshop and collective meals and breakfasts.

CROSSING THE WALL

The workshop proposed a work based in the environment observation, learning to see and make others see. For this they made some interviews to the Pro Restauración de la Ermita de San José Association. Through them, they focused their attention in the Torre del Orejón (The Big Eared’s tower), a lost heritage feature of the city, which many people claim to recover it as an identity symbol. The image that would represent the tower had to be inpiring for a change in the preception of this element for the citizens. With the objective of getting back the idea of the Torre del Orejón in the conscience of the inhabitants, they decided to represent it in a conceptual way with the image of an old music cassette, whose magnetic ribbon has gone out and a pen tries the rewind it manually. The materialization was made with the wheatpasting technique. It is a technique that allows to work in group and collaborate with other techniques. It is inbetween digital and manual, in which you generate and work with a digital image, print it in a big format dividing it into smaller formats and finally glue each part forming the big image again.

TRATAnDO DE ARQUITECTURA

Tratando de Arquitectura was set out as a multidisciplinar and didactic intervention tool to recover spaces and generate an instalation to represent the features of the built heritage in the historical centre of Villena. The process followed in the workshop had several phases. First they made an exploration of the area through a guided visit and walk around the historical centre, giving special attention to some constructive details as openings, metalwork, ornaments, cornices, chimneys and conservation conditions, creating a table of problems and solutions. Afterwards they made a drawing and a study of the different building typologies . Then they showed all the studies and proposals in a series of explanation panels around cardboard cubes. At the end they built up scale 1:1 the fisical intervention proposal for an empty plot site drawing the layouts at the floor and side walls using tape.

Ten experts in heritage and its management took part in the seminar, through 8 lectures and 2 guided visits to learn on site some proposals of built and urban heritage management (Santa Eulalia Colony) and the archaeological heritage (Cabezo Redondo Site). The contents and the objectives were focused in the analysis and debate of concepts, methods, proposals for local development from sustainable management as an employment source. GREEN ATTACK One of the proposed activities open to all the people consisted in the recovering and introduction of vegetation at the historical centre. The activity was developed in two different days. In the first phase we cleaned and took all the soil of some build pots. We also built a new pot to plant some climbing plants to cover a wall visible since the demolition of an old house. The second phase consisted in the introduction of new vegetation soil in the pots and planting to improve the environment of the historical centre. This activity was leaded by Aabside, an engineering and landscape office.

FOOTBALL FOR CHILDREN Another activity carried through was a football tournament for children from the historical centre, to encourage the integration between people from different origins. We established several teams with all the kids and young people, boys and girls, to play several matches in the public space, in the main square, a simbolic space as a centre that brings together all the social life as an space to exhibit activities.

TAPE ART With the idea of focusing on the cultural and artistic part of the event we made a Tape Art workshop.

The activity consisted in some urban art in the floor or walls with tape. The workshop was finished in 2 days taking place in several locations of the historical centre. The first day it took place in the stairs way up to the Santa Barbaraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s castle with the idea of encouraging the people to cilmb them. The artistic tape art of second day was made in the wall of an abandoned house facing the pine park located up of the stairs. There we represented the cave, one of the special features of the houses in the historical centre. This activity was lead by Academia Villena and financed by Miarco.

// ACTIVITIES

STONE CUTTING To show the craft and the features of the stone cutting we made this workshop for children. In this activity we used a special soft stone to make it easier for the kids. First we showed everybody the process that should take to work the stone, drawing first and then making the relief with special tools. This activity was lead by ARAE Heritage and Restoration and was financed by Piedra Viva Hermanas Molina that provided all the stones.

DIGITAL TORRE DEL OREJÓN La torre del Orejón (The Big Eared’s tower) was a clock tower located in the main square of Villena until its demolition in 1888. The activity was suggested by the multidisciplinary team Diffuse, one of whose members is from Villena. The activity was based in recovering in a digital way, with the augmented reality technology this lost heritage feature of the city. They modeled the tower in 3D, related this model to a Tag (an image) of an old drawing of the tower and thanks to the app they developed, you can see again the tower in its location through your phone. This activity had the help from the Pro Restauración de la Ermita de San José association.

// ACTIVITIES

An office formed by a group of young professionals whose wide-ranging experience and specialised training complement each other and broaden the possibilities and working processes of each project. Its work ethos employs a strong personal commitment to each project, supported by an ongoing team work, which continually generates new processes of investigation that lead to innovative and award-winning results.

Villena City Council through the efforts of its counsellors are working to accomplish the objectives of the “Special Plan for the Protection of the Historic Centre of Villena (PECH)”, approved unanimously in 2009 by the city council.

// ORGANIZERS

The University of Alicante, through the Office of the VicePresident of Culture, Sports and Language Policies and its headquarters in Villena, has participated in and set up various workshops and seminars about the study of historic centres. It also regularly organises summer courses located in Villena.

The General Foundation of the Alicante’s University is dedicated to the following fields: educational, cultural, scientific, social, sporting, health, cooperation development, environment protection, research and other similar activities.

The headquarters of the Alicante University in Villena is part of Office of the Vice-President of Culture, Sports and Language Policies and it is located on Calle Trinitarias, 2 C AC de Villena (Alicante).
