CRESTED BUTTE COLORADO

Welcome to an idyllic, end-of-theroad hideaway in the heart of the Elk Mountains. This little town with lots of spirit is an adventure enthusiast’s dream, providing unmatched access to outdoor pursuits of all kinds. Summers here are defined by adventures on wildflowerlined singletrack and the area’s rushing rivers. Come winter, skiing takes center stage, while visitors and locals alike hit the slopes to experience the Gunnison Valley’s bountiful terrain. Aptly named Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town, Crested Butte is full of history, adventure, and local flavor. No matter what time of year you visit, an experience here will stay with you long after you leave.

ELEVEN SCARP RIDGE LODGE

Authentic mountain town setting and adventures

Located in downtown Crested Butte and steeped in local history, Scarp Ridge Lodge was formerly the Croatian Hall, where miners would gather for drinking and dancing during the coal mining heyday. Now, the lodge’s prime location provides easy access to the outdoors and is within a short walking distance of the town’s shopping, bars, and restaurants.

The historic lodge still has its Wild West facade, but the interiors have been transformed with reclaimed iron from the old mills in town and generous amenities, like an indoor saltwater pool and rooftop hot tub. The open-plan lodge purposefully lives like a home, and a private bar allows guests to enjoy chef-prepared après

without leaving the property. The guest-controlled entertainment system is set to music preferences, while coffee and a pre-heated sauna are prep for tackling the trails every morning.

Each of the property’s six guest rooms is slightly different, with a mix of elegant and rustic touches, including earth-toned furnishings, jute rugs, and exposed wood beams. The seven-bed bunkroom — modeled after the board game Chutes and Ladders — is every kid’s dream. To top it off, an oxygen-enriched air system can be activated by the flip of a switch to help fight the effect of high altitude, ensuring a good night’s sleep.

ELEVEN SOPRIS HOUSE

Historical, après-ready perfection

Located next door to Scarp Ridge Lodge, Sopris House is full of history and character, just like the town of Crested Butte. The original 1882 building infamously became the Spritzer Bar, a saloon bought by Martin Spritzer in 1924 and operated by Slovenian immigrants. The intimate, four-bedroom home still has its original tin ceiling and mountain town touches like a massive buffalo head in the dining room and eclectic pieces of art. A large private courtyard is where guests unwind after the day’s adventures, be it in the copper hot tub, outdoor sauna, or around the fire pit. The gem of the house is the Sopris Bar, a private, wood-paneled bar

If you need an outdoor fix, Crested Butte is the place to get it. Considered a mountain biking mecca, the area boasts the largest singletrack system in the United States, and guests can bike or hike many of the area’s trails straight from Sopris House’s front door. In the winter, head to the snow-covered Elk Mountains to cat ski over 1,000 acres of exclusive backcountry terrain at nearby Irwin.

THE SINGLETRACK EXPERIENCE

Mile for mile, trail for trail, Crested Butte, Colorado ranks amongst the world’s top mountain biking destinations. Considered to be one of the birthplaces of mountain biking, Crested Butte’s pedigree runs deep. From May through October riders can explore 750+ miles of singletrack. Endless trails mean unlimited options for mileage, elevation, and technical (or mellower) combinations. You’ll find terrain for all abilities, from flowy singletrack through stunning wildflower meadows to rowdy descents through pine forests in the high alpine. Crested Butte’s bike-friendly vibe and Eleven’s knowledgeable guides ensure an unparalleled experience in this mountain bike mecca.

ADVENTURE INFRASTRUCTURE

All of our properties are outfitted with equipment, vehicles, and supporting structures that have been specifically curated or designed for each location.

Vehicles TRACKED SNOWCATS

Our ten passenger Tucker and The F550 snowcats take winter transportation to the next level. Complete with flat screen TVs, leather seats, and stocked with refreshments, the Tucker and The F550 are the epitome of both form and function. Each day during our winter season, conditions permitting, one of our tracked vehicles will transport guests from their accommodations at Scarp Ridge Lodge or Sopris House to the backcountry powder playground of Irwin, Colorado. Located just 13 miles west of the town of Crested Butte, Irwin is a remote oasis reachable only by snowcat or snowmobile, largely ensuring our guests have its bountiful terrain all to themselves.

At Scarp Ridge Lodge and Sopris House, we have all of the necessary equipment for a day in the mountains or on the river, including a fleet of custom powder skis specifically designed for our cat skiing tenure at Irwin, avalanche safety gear, powder snowboards and splitboards, SUPs, rafts, and inflatable kayaks.

IRWIN CAT BARN & MOVIE CABIN

The Cat Barn is the primary building at the Irwin base area, and is one of the warming houses for skiers experiencing Irwin. While Irwin’s fleet of snowcats lives in the rear of the building, the spacious guest area features plush couches, a long dining table, and a roaring fire for large groups to gather and celebrate their day. A full bar featuring Irwin Brewing Co beer on draft is complemented by games to choose from, and a full live band loft beckons the musically inclined to rock out with no decibel limit. Irwin’s Movie Cabin epitomizes high-mountain coziness, thawing out skiers while they break from chasing deep powder. So named because it was built as a set for a Disney movie, the Movie Cabin serves as a comfortable base to return to during a day spent lapping Irwin’s powdery terrain.

Outposts CRESTED BUTTE LOFT

The Crested Butte Loft is on the Axtel building’s third floor, located at the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and directly across from the two primary chairlifts. Scarp Ridge Lodge guests have priority access to this two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit, which includes balcony views of Mt. Crested Butte, Whetstone Mountain and Axtel Peak, as well as unrivaled proximity to resort skiing. Relax in mountain comfort with a state-of-the-art kitchen, dining area and bar, two sitting areas, game room with foosball and dartboard, and a kid’s playroom loft.

Irwin Explained

The immense beauty and sheer wonder of cat skiing at Irwin is an experience not to be missed. As someone who has explored the world on skis, I can truly attest that this slice of Colorado’s Elk Mountains is something special. For those of you who have not yet experienced a day out on the cat with us, I’m conducting a little Irwin 101 here. Step into my office.

Irwin, Colorado is located about 13 miles west of the town of Crested Butte, where Eleven’s Scarp Ridge Lodge and Sopris House are located. It is here

that Eleven chose to base its cat skiing operation. And with good reason—at over 10,000 feet above sea level, this ski terrain is situated in the “snow shadow” of the Ruby range, which means it is orographically (the study of mountain systems) favored to receive copious amounts of snow from December through April. Here, we are spoiled by light, low density powder thanks to our high altitude and prime location. Irwin’s geography has gained it the well-earned reputation for averaging nearly 450 inches of snow a season—often twice

that of the town of Crested Butte. Eleven has exclusive access to 1,000+ acres at Irwin and two on-mountain outposts, the Cat Barn and the Movie Cabin, where guests enjoy lunch and après. Simply put, for skiers of all ability levels, this is the crème de la crème. Fantastic snow, exclusive use, private groups, delicious food, premium accommodations, and of course, zero lift lines.

While it’s no secret that Irwin boasts an impressive snowpack record, this is not the only draw that entices both hardcharging skiers and intermediate cruisers

to the area’s abundant terrain. Our unique program is highly customizable, and we can truly cater each experience to meet your individual expectations. This is YOUR trip with YOUR friends. You will not interact with any other groups during your ski day. Snowcats will not be mixed, so you will only share space with those in your own private group. Each morning, our Tucker snowcat will pick you up at Scarp Ridge Lodge or Sopris House to deliver you to the powder playground that is Irwin, Colorado.

On to the terrain. Here, we’ve got it all—from wide open powder-filled bowls to tight trees and steep chutes. We usually start the day with a mellow run like “Dan’s Delight” or “Barkmarker Glades” so that everyone can get their ski legs back. There are many approachable, low angle runs for your crew to warm up on or spend the entire day exploring. Then, depending on your group’s level, we will pick it up a notch and head over to something a little steeper on Westwall. As we get comfortable, we may even hit the Upper Westwall, with lines like

“Far Out” or “Thorton’s Rock.” Hard chargers can take on the gnarlier lines in the Upper Upper Westwall such as “Field of Screams” or “Ski Heroes.” When conditions are right, stepping into the New World and skiing the “Needle” or “Thread” is another possibility. If getting air is your thing, we’ve got drops for days. Our guides are expert powder chasers and will have you skiing untouched lines all day long.

Despite the countless hours I have spent skiing, conducting avalanche mitigation, and guiding guests at Irwin, putting this place into words is something that continues to challenge me. When it comes down to it, Irwin is not just a place, it’s an experience. You can feel its power in the moments of silence on the top of Scarp Ridge after the cat has pulled away and before you begin your first descent of the day; in the ear-to-ear smiles and shouts of pure joy as your crew enters the white room; and in the clink of a glass to toast another unforgettable day on the slopes. Here, ‘Best Day Ever’ is not an exaggeration, it is a common refrain.

Blue sky, emerald green pine trees, and granite cliffs frame all of your adventures at Taylor River Lodge. Formerly used as a locals’ general store for fishing and tackle, the property has since been transformed into a private, eight-cabin retreat. The off-grid location deep in Colorado’s Taylor Canyon is the perfect setting for friends, families and corporate groups to unplug and reconnect.

Quality time with friends and family is what Taylor River Lodge was designed to cultivate. There is no shortage of intimate hang spaces for your crew to enjoy. Complete with a saltwater pool, hot tub, steam room, and sauna, the spacious Bathhouse oozes tranquility, while the Copper John game cabin provides an ample common area for relaxation and reconnection. Taylor River Lodge’s eight guest cabins take hygge comforts to the next level. Sleep surrounded by conifers and the babble of the Taylor River. Cozy duvets, patterned pillows, and carefully curated textiles all add to the lodge’s convivial allure.

Fishing is at the heart of the summer experience. Anglers have no shortage of options, from an on-property stocked trout pond and a mile stretch of semi-private river just steps from the cabins, to float trips down the nearby Gunnison River. The surrounding mountains offer rugged singletrack and scenic hiking trails, and the on-site rock climbing wall, archery and hatchet throwing area will make you nostalgic for your Scout days. Come winter, a fresh blanket of snow covers the Taylor Canyon, and the lodge is transformed into a tranquil winter oasis. The lodge’s secluded and wild location offers a prime backdrop for outdoor adventures of all types.

With a stretch of semi-private water on the world-class Taylor River and a casting pond on property, Taylor River Lodge provides the ideal setting for a beginner fly fishing clinic. Hone your skills on the casting pond before trying your hand at casting to the wild trout on the Taylor River. Eleven’s knowledgeable and highly trained fly fishing instructors will be there to guide you every step of the way.

Ecotherapy, a growing scientific field which uses nature-based exercises to address both mental and physical health, has shown a strong connection between time spent in nature and reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s not clear exactly why outdoor excursions have such a positive mental effect, yet in a 2015 study researchers compared the brain activity of healthy people after they walked for 90 minutes in either a

natural setting or an urban one. They found that those who did the nature walk, as opposed to the urban walk, had lower activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that is active during rumination. Making Génépi

A Story from Ages Past

Jean Noel Gaidet is Eleven’s lead guide in France. He’s also a professional French ski instructor and has guided clients throughout France and Italy. Jean Noel’s family has been living in the town of Le Miroir in Sainte Foy for more than six generations, so he knows every corner of the valley. His specialties are off-piste skiing, heli-skiing, backcountry skiing, hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Making Génépi is a longstanding tradition in Jean Noel’s family. Each August, he returns to the mountains to forage for this special flower to make his batch for the upcoming winter to share with friends, family, and Eleven guests at Chalet Pelerin and Chalet Hibou.

Here I am, I trudge on a rocky ridgeline at an altitude of 2,500 meters by the Italian border, in my secret sector. It is August, the Génépi flower is in full bloom. Here in the mountains, I forage for the flowers and pick what I can find. Génépi belongs to the Armoises family, the same family as the famous Absinthe. There are five main varieties of Génépi, but Glacier Génépi (“Artemisia glacialis”) is the variety most commonly used in the distillation of the Génépi digestif.

Before becoming a well-known digestif in our mountains, the origin of Génépi liqueur dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was originally used in the form of an infusion to heal gastric problems. The Génépi plant has always been appreciated for its medical benefits and virtues. It is a fantastic general

health tonic, promoting digestion and supporting the immune system while fighting fatigue. This is why the Génépi digestif is particularly valuable during the winter. Each summer, I harvest the Génépi flower from high in the mountains in order to make my batch for the next winter season.

For many years, the manufacture of Génépi liqueur remained artisanal and prepared by the mountain people, like me. It was not until much later that Génépi spread, thanks to the production of monks, like many other liqueurs. During the 19th century, Génépi liqueur became commercial with the appearance of distilleries in the mountains of the Alps, and more specifically, in Savoie, where this plant is found. The Génépi liqueur has

become famous and emblematic of the French Alps.

The composition of Génépi is simple. To make my homemade Génépi liqueur, I combine Génépi flowers, a neutral alcohol, and sugar. To make this liquor, I macerate 40 sprigs of the Génépi plant in one liter of alcohol at 90 ° C for 40 days. Then I add the sugar syrup to reduce the alcohol level to 45 °C. I can then taste it and enjoy it throughout the winter. I usually serve it after a big meal or I bring it with me in a flask while skiing to celebrate a good ski day with friends and clients, either on the mountain or in the warmth of a mountain refuge.

Situated on the banks of lake Stífluvatn, Deplar Farm’s Lake House serves as a base for hiking, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and lake fishing. The Legend of the Elf Hill

In Iceland, trolls, fairies, elves, and magic spells are more than tall tales. These myths are weaved into Icelandic culture, and the majority of people in Iceland believe in their existence. The people of Iceland often go to great lengths in order to avoid disturbing these spirits, and construction projects have been known to be either rerouted or canceled if they have reason to believe they will interfere with the enchanted home of an elf or fairy.

Deplar Farm, converted from a sheep farm on the remote Troll Peninsula of northern Iceland, is not immune to the

presence of this spirit world. One of the few hills that remain near Deplar Farm is called Álfhóll (Elf Hill). On the north side of this hill, there is a steep slope that locals call Álagabrekka (Spell-Cast Slope). As the story goes, a spell has been placed on this hill — if the enchanted hill is disturbed in any way, the farmer at Deplar will suffer a setback with his crops or his livestock.

The locals on the Troll Peninsula take this spell quite seriously. A local farmer, Haukur Ástvaldsson, remembers troubling instances from his youth which he attributes to the spell of Elf Hill. He

recounts the tale from his youth for which he was seriously reprimanded.

“I was 10 years old at the time and my brothers and I had acquired an oil stove that had outlived its usefulness. One day, we decided to take the stove up the hill, fill it with dry grass, and set it on fire. This resulted in a great flare-up that ignited the vegetation and caused an impressive blaze that burned on the slope. The next morning, after a severe scolding from our father, we made the unfortunate discovery that our most prized lamb on the farm had perished

on the mountain. There were no clues as to what had caused its demise and there were no burn marks to indicate that he had been caught in the blaze. There is no other explanation for why this happened except for the disturbance we had caused on Elf Hill the day before.”

Even today, out of respect for and in acknowledgment of the local lore, Deplar Farm has an understanding with the villagers that they will not cause disturbance to Álfhóll or Álagabrekka and to this day, no structure has ever been built on either of these hills.

Vibrant costumes, intoxicating musical beats, traditional dance, and endless amounts of fun fill the streets as this joyous Bahamian bash begins. Unlike any other festival in the world, Junkanoo is a true celebration of Bahamian culture. Documented in the Bahamas for over 200 years, it is celebrated on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve—and, one could argue, unofficially on many Saturdays throughout the year. The build-up to Junkanoo is intense. Locals put months of careful planning into their costumes, dance rehearsals, and music routines, culminating in a day of celebration

filled with fervent joy as the whole country joins together to partake in the festivities.

This celebration of the imagination fuses all aspects of the arts. Music is one of the key components at Junkanoo, as people dance through the streets to the infectious beats of drums, horns, cowbells, and whistles. The dances complement the music, as established dance groups boogie in tandem with people on the street. The costumes add to the festive atmosphere and fill the streets with a kaleidoscope of colors. Cardboard is typically used as the building material

for these intricately designed costumes, which are then decked out in feathers, beads, and colorful paints, resulting in extraordinary works of art.

The primary location for the festival is held on the island of Nassau, but celebrations occur all over the islands, including on Harbour Island. As the event rolls down Bay Street about 100 yards from Bahama House, one of our favorite spots to listen to the festivities is on our very own 1800 deck. Grab a glass of our famous Goombay Smash and allow yourself to get lost in the beauty and excitement of the Junkanoo Festival.

This remote corner of Chilean Patagonia, set under the awe-inspiring Andes mountains, will enthrall and enchant even the most discerning of travelers. Dramatic 8,000-foot peaks jut out of the lush jungle below to create a formidable skyline, which beckons hard-charging heli-skiers to tackle its untracked terrain. If sought out, first descents can be attained in this largely unexplored zone, with heli-ski runs averaging 1,800 vertical feet. These high alpine glaciers pour into gin-clear rivers filled with the brown and rainbow trophy trout for which this area is known. Eleven’s Futa Camp is nestled under imposing sandstone cliffs on the banks of the turquoise waters of the Rio Futaleufú, otherwise known as “Big River.” Futa Camp is a perfect location to start the day while watching the sun rise over the cliffs, before launching down river on the Lower Futa for a world-class fishing expedition. It can also be used as a quiet respite to enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch and Chilean wine or hot cocoa after battling the raging rapids of the Upper Futa, famous for its class III, IV and IV+ rapids. A Chilean fishing guide since 1980, Fernando “Nano” Abarca began his career guiding in the Lakes District in northern Patagonia and later in Aysen in southern Patagonia. He is also a yoga instructor and a lover of forests and nature in general. Nano’s passion for fishing began at eight years old, when he caught an 8-pound rainbow trout while fishing with his dad—an event that changed his life forever.

Rio Palena Lodge is located in a Valdivian temperate forest. This ecoregion is characterized by rainy weather and evergreen forests that are home to unique flora and fauna. This rainforest at the end of the world covers more than 500 miles north to south.

The flora in this region is diverse — from ferns and orchids to ancient trees such as the Alerce that can live more than 2,000 years. There are a number of fascinating tree species in this primordial part of the world. The Ulmo Tree blooms every February, and from its flowers, the local bees create the distinctly delicious

“Ulmo honey.” The Canelo Tree is sacred to the native Mapuche people because of its strong medicinal properties. Other large, important trees include the Coihue and Mañio. The first is home to the big beetle, Cantaria, who is an important food source for trout. The second is a native pine known for its excellent building quality.

Wildlife in the rainforest is relatively scarce, but at the top of the food chain are the puma and the fox. The Pudu (the smallest deer in the world) and Huemul Deer are very shy and difficult to spot. The birds are abundant and diverse,

from the smaller-sized Chucao Tapaculo and Wed Wed and the medium-sized Kingfisher and Caiquen, to the bigger birds like the Condor and the Eagle. It is possible to encounter all of these species at Rio Palena Lodge.

In our home waters, you can catch rainbow, brown, and brook trout throughout the whole season. If you’re lucky, you may even catch all three in one day for the Patagonian version of the elusive Grand Slam. However you prefer to explore the grandeur of Patagonia’s great outdoors, Rio Palena Lodge is the perfect launch pad.

Māori culture, traditions, and myths are an integral part of Aotearoa history and have shaped many aspects of modernday New Zealand’s identity. You can see influences in the arts, food, language, and even the imaginative tales used to explain the phenomena of the natural world.

Māori have a strong spiritual bond to land and water, and Māori legends, pūrākau, are central to their understanding of the world and its creation. The discovery of the North and South Islands is a fascinating and well-known legend. Māui, a mischievous character, secretly joined his brothers’ fishing excursion by hiding in the hull of his brothers’ canoe, waka. Once they were far out to sea, Māui revealed himself and threw out his line. He immediately had a bite and hauled in a giant fish which would become the North Island of New Zealand, known as Te Ika-aMāui. His waka became the South Island of New Zealand, known as Te Waka a Māui, which was anchored by Rakiura, or Stewart Island. These are the three main islands that make up Aotearoa.

In the arts, the iconic and traditional Māori dance, the Haka, is famous around the world. It is performed before sports events, weddings, tangis/ funerals, celebrations, and gatherings.

The Māori legend describing the origin of the haka paints it as a celebration of life. As legend has it, Tane-rore, the son of Tama-nui-te-ra, the sun god, and his wife Hine-raumati, who embodies summer, would dance for his mother, causing the air to quiver, and this light, rapid movement was the foundation of all hakas.

And, oh, the food! In addition to the fresh seafood, delicious lamb, meat pies, and yummy hokey pokey ice cream, the Māori hāngī is a centuries-old, traditional style of cooking still commonly seen today. Hāngī means “earth oven,” and traditionally, a large hole is dug in the ground with hot stones placed at the bottom of the hole. Foods such as fish, pork, lamb, and kumara are wrapped in flax leaf, placed on top, and then covered with a wet cloth and a layer of dirt. The food is then cooked for hours and the result is a very delicious, tender meal infused with smoke and earthy flavors.

So, next time you visit New Zealand, embrace the culture and practice a traditional greeting known as a hongi, where two people press their noses to each other and inhale one another’s breath. The breath is considered to have come directly from the gods. If this is out of your comfort zone, saying “Kia ora” will also do the trick.

Leaving Your Mark on Kingfisher

Kingfisher has been taking my breath away since 2013. Big snow, big mountains, and big smiles never fail to mark a day exploring this magical place. To date, we’ve named about 250 runs, and still have about that many left to discover. The runs are not just legendary for their deep snowpack and massive old-growth cedars, but they’re also alive with the stories of those who skied them first. When a guest skis a first descent, they get the privilege of naming the run, which lives into eternity at Kingfisher.

My first time skiing Kingfisher resulted in such a story. It was our first day with guests, and, in true BC fashion, it dumped

80cm the night before. The terrain was brand new for us at that point, so when we spotted an open meadow deep in the Monashees that seemed promising, we landed. Our guests were first-time heli skiers, and to say we were stoked would be the understatement of the year. Much to our surprise, the “open meadow” we’d cautiously selected suddenly steepened and thickened with trees, gracing us with an unexpected thrill complete with blower pow, zero wind, and a totally bottomless base. I paused to peek up at my crew, but could only make out billows of powder emitting wild giggles and shouts—a telltale sign of a bunch of guests having the

best day ever. Snow plastered to their grins confirmed my suspicions as they met me, and it wasn’t long before we dubbed the run “Hyena Hills” to commemorate the boisterous noise of that first descent, which turned out to be 1,800 vertical feet of steep open trees.

Not surprisingly, it’s very common for returning guests to absolutely insist on revisiting “their” run. One mom of a particular local family named her first heli-skiing run “Bucket List” at the ripe age of 76 years young. As she swore, she’s since returned to relive that glorious first descent, a wide open chute about 35 degrees and 2,000 vertical feet. Other

guest-named classics are Pillow Talk, Spring Break (my favorite!), Sin City, and Cha Ching, each with an equally as memorable story behind it. Sure, Kingfisher is blessed to be smackdab in the middle of the snowbelt and receives a typical 3–5 meters of snow by midwinter, but it’s these personal stories that make the tenure truly irreplaceable. And since there’s tons left to name plus new terrain opened yearly, there’s a good chance you’ll get to name a first descent, making your mark on Kingfisher forever and paving the way for others to experience more of the rush we’re all seeking on our 300,000-acre playground.
