P I E R S E D G E H E A LT H H U B G RE G S T R O H STUD IO 2 02 3 LO C ATION: EA ST BO S TO N , MA SI Z E : 40,000 SF Issues of social and environmental climates within urban communities require consideration in new project developments, especially in coastal cities like Boston. Effectively analyzing these climates often reveals concerns of poor health, food deserts, social separation, and sea level rise risks. In East Boston, these issues stack on one another which offers opportunities for design responses. To address these concerns, the goal of Piers Edge Health Hub aims to combine a public fitness and food program that integrates with the waterfront in East Boston. Through designing a public infrastructural edge adjacent to a developing park, it will elevate the current waterfront and encourage visitors to explore.

The main programs respond to the food desert and obesity problems within the east Boston community, which consists of a food market and gym. The project establishes a community hub for health and activity and supporting programs such as the greenhouse complement the functions of the main programs. The greenhouse directly supplies crops and herbs for the food market as well as a cafe. It also provides an opportunity for the community to learn about gardening and greenhouse operations.

MISSION ARCADE STACY B U R T ELSON INTE GRATE D DESIGN STUDIO 2023 IN CO LL A B OR AT ION W ITH SA H VA N NA MORRIS LO C ATION: MISSION DIS TRICT, S AN FRA N C ISC O SI Z E : 120,000 SF This studio investigates the relationship between architecture’s various modes of performance. These include material assemblies, structural design, environmental systems, and less technical issues such as compositional systems and aesthetics. The project proposes an affordable housing development located on an urban site in the Mission District of San Francisco. Mission Arcade’s goals include connecting circulation within the existing site, providing optimum security and privacy for residents, and developing a live-work-play community. The overall form is led by the diagonal axis that is inspired from the surrounding site context.

The massing is first generated through cantilevering the private housing over the public program, then a subtractive sandwiching strategy is utilized within the residential form to emphasize the private balconies. The middle of the residential form is subtracted to allow for exterior circulation and a courtyard. To pair with the outside-inside living environment of San Francisco, an urban corridor is formed with adjacent market stalls. The market stalls in the plaza are grouped into three typologies: bar style, walk-up, and food booths.

A living façade is generated with adjustable perforated Corten panels for windows and balconies which occupants can open and close at their own leisure. In addition to providing shade and cooling properties, the façade reduces noise pollution, enhances privacy, allows for views, maintains natural light, and provides ventilation. The panels in front of windows act as single swing panels whereas the panels in front of the balconies act as double accordion panels.

The façade effect reflects the occupants living inside the building, and the varying pattern of opened and closed shutters presents a sense of verticality and texture that breaks up the horizontal nature of the form. To complement the Corten panels, a warm tone color palette of pinks, orange, and yellow is chosen for the balcony spaces as well as the site development.

THE VERGE PAO L A G IAC O NIA STUD IO 2 02 2 LO C ATION: PIA ZZA BRUN E LLE S CHI, FLO REN C E ITA LY SI Z E : 23,000 SF This project proposes an addition to the existing university complex in piazza Brunelleschi, Florence.

The demolition of the existing Material Lab building allows for an overall redesign of the open spaces.

The newly designed building, as an addition to the existing urban historical complex, will host the new entrance to the Humanities Library of the University of Florence. It is intended as a facility for the students and scholars attending the new library as well as for the entire neighborhood. To approach the design, it was key to focus on the vernacular of existing buildings and streets surrounding the site.

The Verge aims to reflect these aspects in a way that morphs the existing qualities of the site with a sculptural approach.

The design strategy consists of extending dimensions of existing buildings on the site to create a massing, as well as emphasizing the axes of Via del Castellaccio that leads into the Piazza to carve out massing and to create a welcoming entrance with green space and a distinct hardscape.

The massing subtraction directs circulation towards the entry point of the building addition as well as the new courtyard. The entry point is created from a square cut out that in turn creates the possibility of an air bridge to the existing structure the House of the Mutilated.

To enhance the user experience past the entry point, public programs such as the cafe and bookstore are placed on the ground floor to encourage visitors. This also echoes program placement within the site, as many buildings surrounding the piazza have public programs on the ground floor and more private programs on the above floors. site plan

The facade design takes inspiration from the stone panels along the corners of the House of the Mutilated. With increasing and decreasing the scale of the stone, a diverse panel pattern was created on the facade that echoes the original stone panels existing on the site. The

patterning of the facade allows the utilization of a grid-like strategy to place windows within the geometries of stone created.

To form new relationships with the surrounding roofs, similar roof slopes connect to create new geometries. The roof features two skylights, where

one skylight is placed over the study area on the third floor and the main stairwell in the lobby is placed under the other large skylight which allows light to filter through from the third floor to ground floor.

The different operations were explored in model kit studies. The joints and rotations reveal the spaces created by the primitive geometric shapes that invoke a playful connection with children. The various geometrical masses and shapes allow for instances of filtering light and geometric window conditions to form.

Using primitive massing geometries, the generated spaces have an identifiable connection to children that generate views of interior spaces looking into each other.

Community programs are centralized, and learning spaces are separated into wings.

By implementing these strategies, a unique world is created where the unfolding of shells reveals inhabitable, playful geometric shapes on the interior that are divided between two

wings that have space full of life, play, and light cascading through them. The Plinth serves as the ground floor, and its shape is inspired by the top view outline of the building. By utilizing existing geometries, colorful hardscapes were created on the plinth’s roof areas for pathways, as well as for furniture and playground equipment to sit on.

An atrium condition is developed within the “plus” shape massing that cuts through the library program. The atrium filters light into the courtyard as well as into the library while generating a view of looking down into the courtyard and across the interior spaces of the library.

Classrooms are placed on the interior faces of the Yellow and Pink “wings”.

Through angling classrooms to enclose the spaces with windows, views focus inward toward each other as well as toward the courtyards and the plinth.

CLEVELAND ROWING CENTER T H OM S TA U F F ER STUD IO 2 02 3 LO C ATION: C LEVE L AN D, O H SI Z E : 5 0,000 SF The Cleveland Rowing Center is a hub for rowing culture intertwined with fitness and community engagement. The form adapts to the varying heights and curves of the existing hill and riverbank, creating a visually dynamic integration with the landscape. A relationship is developed with the river’s edge by offering multiple routes of public access and scenic views of the river and city.

URBAN PLAN West of the Columbus Road Bridge, the current design of Irish Bend Park, a community led effort, is integrated along the Cuyahoga River’s edge. It aims to improve connections between Ohio City and the Flats, Downtown, the Cuyahoga Riverfront, and Lake Erie through the 36

completion and connection of regional trails like the Redline Greenway and the Towpath Trail. On the eastern side of the bridge, NRP Group’s upcoming residential project on Scranton Peninsula is blended with proposed boat houses along the edge of the river. The boat houses contain

boat storage, clubhouses, locker rooms, kitchens, and apartments. The rowing center is placed at the junction of these developments to promote public engagement and circulation.
