Chapter 1

n the most secluded basements of the town library , far from any human being , there was an eruption of feverish activity : thousands of lively little creatures ran frantically to and fro devouring all the paper they could get their tiny paws on (which was a lot) and uttering joyful Mexican cries every time they found a complete book among the shelves .

En los más apartados sótanos de la biblioteca municipal , lejos de los seres humanos , se desarrollaba una actividad febril : miles de pequeños seres vivarachos corrían frenéticamente de un lado a otro devorando todo el papel que había a su alrededor (que era mucho) y dando grititos mejicanos de alegría cada vez que encontraban entre los estantes un libro entero . Any biologist would have had a hard time trying to classify

Capítulo 1 these tiny individuals , for while certain elements of their behaviour resembled that of stressed mice or squirrels , their anatomy defied all the established categories : they had an oval body with six agile legs that could also be used as arms . Their head was huge with three glinting eyes on top and a sort of wide snout that took up the rest of their face . They had no ears . Perhaps they were deaf .

Their whole body was covered with very thick, smooth fur of varying colours although most of them were brownish . Their furry coat formed lots of small folds everywhere as if they were wearing an oversized pullover . These folds were certainly very useful : they held their belongings , sheltered their cubs and some of them even grew bonsais .

They only ate paper , the more the better . The problem was that cellulose gave them flatulence and consequently they emitted a nauseating smell . They didn´t seem to mind because they were the

epitome of decision and selfconfidence . Although most animals on earth were doomed to extinction , these creatures increased in number every day and were the silent dwellers of any self-respecting archive , museum , library or bookshop .

Aunque la mayor parte de los animales de la tierra estaban en grave peligro de extinción , la propagación de estos seres iba en aumento y poblaban todo archivo , museo o biblioteca que se preciase .

What made things worse was that people were not even aware of their presence thanks to a simple but effective strategy : whenever these individuals detected any human beings nearby they hid themselves among their own folds assuming the appearance of fluffballs . Nevertheless , a horrid smell would often give them away . Nobody ever suspected its origin and instead they would call the plumber and place pine-scented candles everywhere .

And thus they lived ever so happily , eating paper quite freely and singing rancheras .

Chapter 2

aramont was a very special town . It was integrated in the governmental programme of intelligent cities and , after a short time , it had become the maximum exponent of the project . It was mentioned by all the specialists , who often described it as a “showcase of domotics” .

All the public buildings , parks and streets were controlled by state-of-the-art programmed computers that took care of all the details : illumination ,

Although in the past it had been an essentially rural population , the neighbours adapted to the change with gusto and thanks to the subsidies , they modified their houses following the minimalist criteria of the ministerial order . Concrete had always been a favourite in the town .

But without a doubt the school was the true pride and joy of inhabitants , governors and experts alike : they had managed to eliminate paper completely and the students wandered between immaculate classrooms with a laptop that replaced books , notebooks , pencils and therefore , heavy schoolbags .

Chapter 2 That morning Mr . Ricardo , the school headmaster , felt especially satisfied . Although it was quite cold , the sun shone splendidly in the sky , and upon entering his office he checked that the indoor temperature was perfect and the filters on the large windows had been activated to tone down the excessive sunlight .

Her hair was bunched up in 12 little ponytails , each pointing in a different direction and fastened with multi-coloured hair bobbles . This was the “electrode look” that she was so keen on ; since her hairdo

Capítulo 3 lasted several days , she didn’t have to fight every morning to get her wild curls under control .

She walked up the street absentmindedly , yet resolutely at the same time , for her head was bubbling over with projects : she had just set up a detective agency in the attic of her house .

The office had turned out great . It had a large , antique mahogany table . This had a wonky leg and parts of the wood on top had been chipped away with a screwdriver when she was little , but she was sure she could repair it . She started out filling in the holes with brown plasticine , but whenever she placed something on top it would stick , so she turned to her Prehistory teacher for help . She was given a little tube filled with a type of resin that turned out to be most effective . As it was yellow , the table ended up looking like a Gruyère cheese , so she covered it with

Chapter 3 an old oriental tapestry which gave it a distinguished look . A green armchair , a Portuguese vase and a bookcase stuffed with detective stories given to her by her grandfather made up the rest of the decoration .

There was also her team of collaborators : Nelson the canary , who acted as receptionist by chirping whenever someone approached ; Tagomago , a young Newfoundland who entertained potential clients , and Wind , a sandy-coloured Siberian Husky that made sure the Newfoundland didn’t get over-excited .

Apart from an impressive webpage offering their services , a small golden plaque had been fixed to the door , with the following words traced on :

Chapter 4

he headmaster’s words rang out with a somewhat eerie echo , provoking varying levels of panic among the children as the speech unfolded .

Las palabras del director sonaban con un eco algo fantasmagórico , que provocaba diversos estados de pánico en los niños a medida que avanzaba en su discurso .

“I will try to explain the serious nature of this situation in words you can understand . I do not wish to alarm you , but this is really critical” .

Capítulo 4 ignored his advice to adopt a reassuring tone . The psychologist tried kicking him , but it was too late ; there was no stopping him now .

“All the information stored on our computers is rapidly disappearing . At full speed . Whole files are being erased , and curiously enough , when several computers have the same data , it’s disappearing simultaneously . For example , your reading book programmed for this term has been erased from both our computers and from those of your classmates , at least the ones I’ve been able to check . Please , calmly check if any of you still have that file . ”

The children quickly got out their state-of-the-art , voiceoperated laptops and chorused the file name . The file had indeed disappeared , and the students screamed in terror while the headmaster continued his speech unperturbed , but

Chapter 4 no-one was listening to him anymore . Lía must have been the only person in the entire school who was delighted . The longer the headmaster spoke , the more elated she felt . This was her chance . The case she needed to put her agency in the limelight . Don Ricardo continued giving out the bad news without the slightest consideration for his sensitive young public which was going to pieces . When he announced that -given the technical difficulties- classes would be suspended until further notice , there were screams , people fainting ...

Lía decided not to waste any time . She concluded that the Spanish teacher , generally considered to be a bore thanks to his verbal diarrhoea , would be a valuable witness for her first round of questioning . She therefore made her way through the hysterical crowd and asked him to tell her everything he knew . Unable to resist , Don Enrique gave her the whole spiel , basically what the headmaster had already explained , but with far more drama and embellishments . Nevertheless , he did add something she found very interesting : he had observed that some files still remained on his computer , precisely those

Lía was noting all this down on her laptop but -bearing this last detail in mind- she decided not to take any risks . Thanking don Enrique , she went straight to the library and began to copy her notes into a little notebook she always carried around to sketch the odd things she found or saw , to stick petals and leaves , feathers ... it even had a slightly disgusting page with the flattened bugs she unstuck from the windscreen of her mum’s car when she was back from her trips . She wrote very quickly because there was a strange smell and she was eager to get out of there . She packed up her things and flicked away some fluffballs that were on the table . If things carried on this way , the school was sure to lose its cleanliness award .

Tras dar las gracias a don Enrique , fue a la biblioteca y comenzó a anotar todo en una libretita que siempre llevaba con ella para hacer dibujitos de cosas curiosas que veía , pegar pétalos y hojas de árboles , plumas ... hasta tenía una página un poco asquerosa con los insectos aplastados que quitaba del parabrisas de su madre a la vuelta de los viajes . Escribió muy rápidamente , porque había un extraño tufillo y estaba deseando salir de allí . Recogió sus cosas y apartó unas bolas de pelusa de la mesa . A este paso , el colegio iba a perder el premio a la asepsia .

Chapter 5

he arrived home out of breath from so much running . On top of that , her thermal overalls mustn’t have been working as they weren’t cooling her at all . As she was about to go in she heard a great roar coming from the stables . Lía called out to Marta , her mum .

“What’s up with Río?” she asked , dumping her school things on the little table in the entrance and unfastening her overalls . “He keeps on

Llegó a casa casi sin respiración de tanto correr . Además el buzo térmico debía estar estropeado y no refrigeraba nada . Justo antes de entrar oyó un gran estruendo procedente de la cuadra . Llamó a Marta , su madre . -¿Qué le pasa a Río? -preguntó Lía dejando las cosas del colegio encima de la mesita de la entrada y desabrochándose el buzo- . No para de relinchar y dar patadas .

Capítulo 5 whinnying and kicking” . “I went to have a look before but there didn’t seem to be anything wrong with him . I suppose he must have spotted a cat or a mouse . Go and check on him while I lay the table . He’s sure to cheer up” . Lía made her way to the stables . As soon as he saw her coming , the horse went berserk kicking even more furiously and neighing crazily . “Hey , you lunatic , what’s up?” smiled Lía . She opened the door and patted his neck to calm him down , but it had the opposite effect and Río picked her up by the hair and carried her to the back of the stables . There he dropped her and kicked a huge pile of wood shavings . Lía cleaned her hair that had been covered in slobber and gave him a light rap on the muzzle . “Are you stupid or what? Look how you’ve left me . There isn’t anything over there” , she tried

-Ya fui antes pero no parece pasarle nada . Supongo que habrá visto un gato o un ratón . Vete a hacerle una visita mientras pongo la mesa . Seguro que se pone muy contento . Lía se fue hacia la cuadra . Tan pronto la vio acercarse , el caballo empezó a dar patadas más fuertes todavía y a chillar como un energúmeno . -Hey loco ¿qué te pasa? -preguntó Lía sonriendo . Abrió la puerta y le dio unas palmaditas en el cuello para tranquilizarlo , pero Río , lejos de relajarse , la agarró por los pelos y la condujo hasta el fondo de la cuadra . Una vez allí la soltó y dio patadas sobre un enorme montón de viruta . Lía se pasó la mano por el pelo que le había quedado todo babeado y le dio un suave capón en el hocico . -¿Tu estás tonto o qué? Mira como me has dejado . Ahí no hay nada -trató de explicarle señalando el montón de

Chapter 5 to explain , pointing to the wood shavings . “You see? It’s only ... ” . Just then Lía noticed that the pile of shavings was moving suspiciously as if it were quicksand . She surreptitiously picked up a spade and carefully started to poke the mound until she found what was making it move : two particularly greedy fluffballs were tossing shavings in the air with all their little arms and waiting for them to fall back down with their mouths wide open , cackling loudly and then devouring them with their mouths stuffed full . Lía and Río looked at each other perplexedly . She stroked him , warning him to stay still while she searched for any kind of container nearby . All she could find was an old hoof oil tin thrown in a corner . It was a bit dirty but it would do . “Río , pass me the tin” she said . Lía had taught the horse to carry objects , a skill he had acquired with great expertise .

Río y Lía se miraron perplejos . Ella lo acarició indicándole que se quedase quieto y buscó a su alrededor algún recipiente . Sólo había en una esquina un viejo bote de aceite para los cascos . Estaba un poco sucio pero valdría . -Pásame el bote , Río -le pidió . Lía había enseñado al caballo a transportar objetos y él había aprendido a hacerlo con gran pericia . Una vez en sus manos ,

Capítulo 5 Once the tin was in her hands , she quickly covered the two fluffballs which would have otherwise escaped easily by burrowing into the shavings , were it not for the sticky oil that managed to trap one of them . She lifted the tin to her nose and hastily pushed it away . It was the same stench she had smelt only earlier in the school library .

con un gesto rápido , colocó el bote sobre las dos pelusas , que se hubieran escapado sin problemas adentrándose en la viruta , si no fuera por el pringue del aceite que logró detener a una . Pleased with herself , Lía smiled and congratulated Río , who lowered his head so she could scratch his ears . She hugged him and sighed . She loved the feel of his smooth , warm hair and his honey smell . She remembered the times that cuddle had comforted her , especially when her dad had left .

Lía sonrió satisfecha y felicitó a Río , que agachó la cabeza para que pudiese rascarle entre las orejas . Ella lo rodeó con sus brazos y suspiró . “Good job” she softly whispered . “I do believe that thanks to your delicate , white hooves we’re closer to finding out exactly what’s going on here” .

he situation soon got out of hand . What had started out as a strange technical hiccough at local level that was completely ignored by the authorities , soon filled the newspaper front pages and became the top story on the news . The crisis was now nationwide .

Not a single book , instead a sea of fluffballs accompanied by the allpervading stench that was becoming a regular fixture . Lía was intently listening to the news , incessantly taking notes while devouring a hot tomato , cheese , bacon and gherkin sarnie . As soon as she finished , she once again took the precaution of making a hard copy on paper , summarising the most relevant points of her investigation in her notebook . Satisfied , she went to her bedroom to take a look at the fluffball which she’d bathed with her mum’s shampoo after long deliberations over the best product to use . It turned out that it was extra-volume shampoo , for

All that remained were the bugs from her carefully categorised collection . “Well , you’re obviously not a carnivore” , she concluded .

s soon as she got up the next day , a sunny , pleasant Sunday , she went back to her gastronomic investigation of the fluffball . After innumerable trials it became clear that it only ate woody substances , wood , paper and its derivatives . It found everything else disgusting , and made this patently obvious by grimacing and pulling faces .

“You know what?” , Lía commented to Helium , “The whole point of this case was to put my detective agency into the limelight , and in the end I’ll have to keep it under wraps . The only client I have is a classmate who needs help finding a lost watch without her parents finding out . It’s not fair” , she concluded , yanking a huge backpack that her dad had left in the loft . The backpack moved in a somewhat peculiar manner . “Is there far to go?” , Lía asked Marta . “No , we’re almost there” , she replied . “Look , there at the back on the right , you can make out the sea” . “It’s been several hours since I last sprayed them with lime blossom tea , and they’re beginning to wake up” , she whispered to Helium .

-¿Falta mucho? -preguntó Lía a Marta . -No , ya estamos muy cerca -contestó Marta- . Mira , allá al fondo a la derecha , ya se ve el mar . -Hace ya varias horas que no las pulverizo con tila y se están despertando -cuchicheó Lía a Helio . “I think we may have finished” , said Lía . They gazed at the water for a while until there was no longer any sign of the fluffballs .
