Project Presentation

The project is located in Rafina, Athens, Greece, in the boarder area of the existing port. Rafina provides easy access to the airport and it is connected by sea with many islands of the Aegean. The idea was the creation of a center of maritime activities (mainly sailing and rowing) and the construction of a marina alongside with the designing of an outdoor part of the existing harbor of Rafina.

This 1:500 scale model (Figure 1) illustrates the building and landscape idea in the concept design stage and it was created to demonstrate the relationship between the proposed architectural solution and the environment. A minimalistic approach was decided to avoid elements of the new constructions to stand out. The model is 100% handmade, no laser cut or 3D printing machines were used. It consists only of one material (grey cardboard of 1mm thickness) to highlight the integration of the building in the surrounding landscape. For the sea, the same cardboard was used and was coloured with pencil shavings using a cotton pad for a smooth finish.

Small simple models (Figure 3) made of a combination of cardboards (different types, colours and thicknesses) were used in the final presentation of the project to illustrate the stages of exploration in the concept design, mainly experimentation on the building’s shape. A section model and a bigger one illustrating the surrounding landscape.

This 1:200 scale model (Figures 4-12) illustrates the building and landscape idea with all the necessary details for that scale such as facades, staircases, materials, outdoor benches, decks etc.

I was responsible for the completion of the model from the early beginning until the end. I modified the architectural drawings to files ready for the laser-cut machine and the preparation for the cutting of the model pieces, which was not difficult for me as I took part in the design process of the project. Then I cut, painted, refined and assembled the pieces. The rest of the team participated in the assembling of the difficult or big parts of the model as well in the experimentation of materials in the early stage.

A range of materials and equipment were used:

The base is a wood board, thick enough to resist the weight of the ‘rock’.

The ‘rock’ is solidly made from corrugated cardboard of low tichkness to achieve a fine result and illustrate the height changes of the rock.

A piece of metal sheet was chosen for the demonstration of the sea because we thought that it will reflect the light and create the sense of water. The colour of the sheet is not the original one as we tried to oxidise after trying several methods.

Balsa was used mainly for the columns and painted grey to be more similar to their actual material which would be concrete.

The boat masts as well as the outdoor lamp posts are made of metallic wire.

For the rest of the building and the marina grey and hard brown cardboards of several thickness and finishes after different proceccing were used.

A laser-cut machine was used for specific parts of the model and particularly the facades and the three circular windows. The rest of the elements (including boats,people and the landmark church) are handmade.

The 1:100 concept model (Figure 14) is the first architectural model created to illustrate the design idea. It is minimal because the main goal was to experiment on the materials and in particular the one of the ‘auditorium’.

Painted balsa was the first idea we tried but it was rejected due to the poor output of the metallic texture.

The project is located in Alexandroupolis, Greece and is an “Audiovisual Activities” center with interactive spaces and exhibitions. A place for exploration and experimentation that will contribute to the development of the area.The main idea was to integrate a new structure inside the old one. The two buildings, old exterior and new interior (a small scaled cinema hall) do not touch each other and they have seperated structure systems.

Physical Model

This 1:100 scale model (Figure 15-22) illustrates the existing walls of the building and all the new additions in the interior space. The materials used were two types of cardboard, grey and brown, to represent concrete and wood respectively. Also, balsa was used for the structural system as well as for the window frames after being painted black. Black Canson paper was used to demonstrate the sea and real plants as trees. The most eye-catching element, the auditorium, was created with grey cardboard and coated with copper foil painted on top with a special technique to acquire the desired outcome.

The project is located in the centre of Xanthi, Greece and is a Museum of the history of the city with permanent and temporary exhibitions. There are two entrances from both the north and the south to serve different parts of the city. The building consists of two main wings with the east one hosting the exhibitions and the west the offices, the restaurant/cafe and workshop rooms. Also, in the middle part of the building which connects the two wings, we can find the foyer, the museum shop, lifts and toilets.

This is 1:200 scale model (Figure 23,25) illustrates the building and the surrounding area in the schematic stage of design. The materials used are mainly grey cardboard of different thicknesses that represent the different thickness of the walls and brow hard cardboard to highlight the second material that would be used for the building either wood or metal. Also, the east part opens to have a look at the inside (Figure 23), where balsa was used as columns painted in the same colour as the grey cardboard (walls) implying that would be concrete as well.

Physical Model 1:100

This 1:100 scale model (Figure 26-39) illustrates the building with a lot more details than the previous model (1:200) such as window frames, blinds and furniture. The materials were used the same way as in the previous model with an exception for window frames that are made of balsa painted in a metallic dark grey colour. Also, vertical corrugated cardboard is used as a representation of the exterior green areas and real branches as trees. Both of the wings, east (Figure 26) and west (Figure 27) are removable to give visibility to the interior space including the partition of the rooms and the type of furniture selected.

The project is located on the island of Thassos, close to the port and an ancient theatre. The area is full of rocks and the facilities of the hotel are placed between the road and the beach. The hotel consists of two buildings, the central one where the reception area and communal spaces such as restaurant, gym, multipurpose hall are located and one in the south which is dedicated to hotel rooms and private studios. Also, on the other side of the rock on the beach, there is a small cafe that is connected to the hotel area through a path.

The 1:200 scale model in (Figures 42-46) illustrates the hotel area, in specific the two buildings and the surrounding landscape design. The buildings are represented with grey cardboard, the outdoor wooden decks with brown cardboard and the pools with black Canson paper. On the other side, the sea is made of cork painted in a dark colour. The big rock where the hotel is located and the smaller rocks in the sea are made of thin corrugated cardboard and some branches are used for vegetation.

The project is located in the port of Kavala, Greece and the goal was the reconstruction of the old port facilities in the area and the conversion to culture and sports activities facilities for leisure and relaxation. The design consisted of the landscape design of the whole old port and the architectural design of the building that would host some of the activities.

Two physical models illustrate this project. The first one in scale 1:500 (Figures 46,47) demonstrates all the area of the old port and the proposed landscape reconstruction. The second more detailed model in scale 1:200 (Figure 45,48,49) is a closer look at the building its outdoor area. In both models, the same materials were used. Grey carton for the platform and the building that represents concrete, brow carton for the wooden deck. Also, cork was used for the earth, black Canson paper for the sea and wire for some metallic elements in the buildings. All the details such as the people, the outdoor lamp posts and benches are made of cardboard and balsa painted accordingly to fit well in the model.

In Figures 51-55 the more detailed 1:200 model is demonstrated. In Figure 51 there is one of the building’s facades where different types and colours of cardboard have been used to represent the range of materials that will be used in the construction. In the rest of the figures, there are mainly views and details of the outdoor area where an elevated sloping square was designed to give access to the multipurpose hall and open exhibition space.

Figure 50 demonstrates the physical model in scale 1:500 that was created to experiment with the shapes and the position of the building concerning the surrounding area and the relationship with the road that separates the site in two parts. It is a minimal model that illustrates the hill close that exists in the area as well as the neighbouring blocks of buildings.

The 1:200 scale model (Figure 57) illustrates the residential complex. The main materials used are grey cardboard to demonstrate concrete, thin and shiny brow cardboard for the wooden elements, corrugated cardboard for the ground and black Canson paper for the sea.

The model is more detailed and we can see for example the difference of materials in the yard with two different brown cardboards used one for the physical ground and the other for the designed path.

jeWELLERY Silversmithing Courses

During a 3-month silversmithing course, I experimented with a range of materials and techniques. I worked with brass, alpaca, silver 925, titanium, Murano glass, smalto, concrete, stones and beads. I learned sawing, soldering, filing and polishing the metal as well as stone setting, enamelling and wax carving. Also, I got familiar with all the workshop hand tools like saw frame, needle files, hammer, cutter, pliers and types of machinery such as disk sander, bobbin sander and pillar drill.

I created designs of every shape to get experience in the techniques using different metals. Here you can see some samples of my work.
