It’s been two decades since the award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne changed the game with her debut studio album, Let Go. In 2002, the “Complicated” singer altered the music landscape with her pop-punk sounds and distinct style, bucking against the pop norms of the early ‘00s.

Early in her career, fans and critics tried to label her style, dubbing Lavigne the “Princess of pop-punk” and categorizing her as “post-grunge,” comparing her to artists like Alanis Morissette. Love Sux (her first under Travis Barker’s DTA Records) features vocal collaborations with artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear, and Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus. Songs such as “Bois Lie” and “Bite Me” tap into the nostalgic sound Lavigne embraced 20 years ago, inspiring a new generation of girls with her empowering progressive pop-punk ways.

py). Another one, my Downtown favorite, Slider Inn, is where fun vibes meet mouthwatering sliders. Pair your meal with their signature drinks, Jameson Slushie and Melty Mary, and it becomes a must-add stop to your Memphis experience.

DESTINATIONS Broad Avenue Arts District has grown a lot in the past few years. It’s now a hotspot for artists, art collectors, or anyone who appreciates art in general. Yet, even the art scene reminds us that this city is as bluesy as ever.

If Memphis is your destination of choice, May is an incredible time to go. The city’s month-long celebration includes a variety of food tastings and events. The celebration starts with an epic music festival, opening the streets to locals, travelers, musicians, artists, and lovers from all walks of life. There’s nothing that compares to the Beale Street Music Festival. It’s a giant celebration that reminds us why Memphis is known as “The Blues City” and is undoubtedly “The Birthplace of Rock and Roll.” While exploring Beale Street, don’t miss the iconic B.B. King’s Blues Club where live blues, classic soul, and rock and roll will soothe your soul - especially with their pre-dinner signature drinks on the menu. Right down the street awaits a true Memphis BBQ destination. Rendezvous - a circa-1948 BBQ spot in a basement serves up racks of smoked ribs and sausages with dry-rub spices. It’s a classic – you must try!

In Memphis, the Mississippi River is considered the city’s North Star. It guides you to your destination, even if you’re simply following the food and music, wandering about the city. The bridges light up at night. There’s the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge, which sits between both states. If you stand in the middle of the bridge, you literally have one foot in Arkansas and the other in Tennessee. There is also the Hernando de Soto Bridge. Both names never really stuck, so everyone calls them the Old Bridge and the New Bridge instead.

This is a tale of the “Home of the Blues.” A city where beloved artists created the music that impacted so many hearts from all over the world. Memphis is more than just a destination - it’s a real-life, present-day piece of American history.

n Tuscany, the sun always shines. Autumn brings a very special meaning to Tuscany. The countryside is rich with porcini and truffle mushrooms, and the afternoons are bathed in golden light and magical landscapes that take your breath away. Barga is known for its beautiful landscapes, interesting history, Scottish influence, famous prosciutto, pecorino cheese, olives, honey, and unique local ingredients specific to that region. The local eateries offer Tuscan specialties in the most authentic way. Barga has a cultural connection to Scotland, resulting in their annual fish and chip festival, Sagra del Pesce e Patate, which happens every summer.

Barga’s famous and magnificent duomo stands iconic against the landscape of the postcard-perfect Tuscan mountains. Walk the Ponte della Maddalena (Devil’s Bridge) and visit the unforgettable Grotta del Vento of Fornovolasco, where time stands still through many centuries, displaying magnificent imagery to remember.

The beautiful Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa is Barga’s hospitality gem overlooking the peaceful Serchio Valley. Craft mouthwatering local dishes, master Tuscan pasta, bake Tuscan pies and then enjoy it all on a beautiful terrace with a view among old or new friends while sipping delicious local wines.

The outdoor pool is situated among the picturesque mountains, inviting you to relax and observe the panoramic views.

But when you are in the mood for outdoor activities and some exercise, visit Cinque Borghi and hike through the little villages and vineyards. You can visit local churches, discover tales of the locals, then indulge in a well-deserved lunch at Agriturismo Pian di Fiume, where you can appreciate freshly picked porcini and local ingredients well mastered with their Tuscan dishes.

Visit Tuscany’s legendary countryside, explore its gorgeous medieval towns, discover beautiful Renaissance churches, and enjoy delicious cuisine from the Tuscan region.

One of the best traditional Tuscan activities includes a visit to the Charming city of Lucca! The artistic town of 100 churches.

Lucca is a famous destination for serious music lovers. It’s the home of Giacomo Puccini, the famous Italian composer of “Madame Butterfly” and “La Bohème.” Lucca is also known for its famous Lucca Summer Music Festival in July, where grand international artists perform live; John Legend, Zucchero, and Justin Bieber, just to name a few...

Another beautiful historic church in the center of Lucca is the Basilica di San Michele which displays a unique front façade. The original church is from the 8th century. You can find many hidden symbols and drawings on the columns inside and outside of the cathedral. Above the main arches of the façade are four rows of ornate arches and columns that feature various colors and designs. Above each arch, there are beautiful artworks depicting various wild animals. The stonework around the rose windows shows exquisite craftsmanship, as important artworks by Luca della Robbia and Filippino Lippi are inside the cathedral.

The truth of omakase lies in the word. Directly translated, it means, “I leave it up to you.”

The idea of U Omakase started during the dark days of lockdown. Husband and wife co-owners Luis and Kate moved for three months to Connecticut and rented the house next to Kate’s parents. Luis couldn’t find any good sushi and started taking trips to the fish market, making sushi for the family. His passion as a foodie transformed into a passion for feeding people and seeing how happy that made them. Around that time, Yasu closed his restaurant in Forrest Hills, and the two began imagining a new restaurant in Brooklyn. U was inspired by the desire to bring people together in a space that is about more than food. Yasu and Luis, together with seasoned business owner Kate (founder of YO BK and co-owner of Novela Cafe Social), and seasoned business owner Arnon Magal (founder of Gotan NYC and Novela Cafe Social [Miami] and co-owner of YO BK Wynwood), dreamed of creating a space that would encourage their patrons to stay a while.

Head chef Yasu Hirashiki is a veteran sushi chef with nearly 50 years of experience. Yasu was born and raised in Okinawa and spent his childhood diving for sea urchins off the Japanese coast. He brought in whatever he didn’t eat on the beach to his father’s restaurant. By 13, he was working there. That’s where he began an apprenticeship under several master sushi chefs - one of which is a two-time winner of Japan’s “Iron Chef.”

In his 20s, Yasu Hirashiki moved to America and eventually opened a fish market that served sushi from a small storefront. In the true fashion of an artist, he experiments with tastes, textures, and colors, designing one-of-a-kind dishes. As his reputation grew, so did his experience. With a loyal customer following and his surprise dishes, he expanded Sushi Yasu to Forest Hills. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, Sushi Yasu was forced to close its doors. However, to everyone’s delight, Yasu Hirashiki has found a new home at U Omakase.

Co-owner and chef Luis Durand was born in Asuncion, Paraguay, and moved to the U.S. at nine years of age. Luis became his family’s official translator, interacting with the various cultures of Woodside, Queens.

In his early 20s, Luis suffered an accident that left him bedridden for a year and caused him to gain significant weight.

Fate had a date when he met Yasu while he was working for the Health Department. Yasu insisted that he shift his diet in favor of vegetables and raw fish. From that moment, a friendship was born - one that has lasted decades. That also marked the beginning of Luis’s obsession with sushi. That love was passed along to his 10-year-old son, Jake, who could remarkably taste the difference between salmon and king salmon by three years of age.

Luis worked as a contractor and interior designer before opening U Omakase. He met his wife, Kate, while building her yoga studio in Greenpoint. Kate and Luis partnered in parenthood and in the restaurant, making both of their dreams come true.

asabi offers traditional Japanese dishes fused with Japanese-Indonesian flavors and a French influence. Robby has crafted the restaurant’s innovative menu from his life experiences, creating each plate with a tasty purpose and a beautiful aesthetic.

The story of how Wasabi came to be what it is today started with the first time Robby and Cristin met. They both come from the same village in Indonesia but hadn’t met until they were both in New York. Cristin was working as a cashier at Wasabi, and Robby, who had originally landed in Philadelphia, came to the restaurant hoping they could utilize his skills as a master sushi chef. As fate would have it, the two instantly fell in love and decided that together, they would buy Wasabi and make it their own.

While they’ve owned several restaurants through the years, Wasabi remains their love child. They pour their heart and soul into the establishment, making it a place where people come in hungry and leave happy.

Everything in the restaurant - from top to bottom - has been made by the Wijaya family. Robby handcrafted all the furniture and the light fixtures, while their son Brandon Matthew Wijaya drew fantastical images of Samurai to adorn the walls. It is a family establishment in every sense, making every customer who walks through the door feel like they’re coming home.

Wasabi is unique in other ways because of what they import. They are the only wholesalers who receive their fish directly from Indonesia. Up until recently, the importation and exportation of tuna from that country were run by a private company. The new government changed its policy and has granted Robby and Cristin sole rights to the tuna imported into the United States. Their exclusive shipments of fresh fish began in April and are now delivered every couple of days because it’s in such high demand. Everything has come full circle for the couple

as they now give back to the communities and fishers in Indonesia who rely on the economic opportunities only, they can bring.

Making his mark worldwide, Robby has become the authority on innovative Japanese cuisine through the years. Locally, he’s catered for productions that film in the area, such as “Sex and the City,” “30 Rock,” “Blue Bloods,” and “Elementary.” He has also curated special dishes for the prestigious Silver Cup on the East and West Coasts.

HAUTE CUISINE Robby started from nothing when he came to this country in 1998 and worked his way up to create a beautiful life for not only his family but also the residents of Brooklyn. The Manhattan Avenue location remains a cornerstone of the community.

Robby and Cristin are the pioneers of Greenpoint, proving that when opportunity knocks, you should always open the door and walk through it. While their goal is to grow the restaurant and the wholesale business, ultimately, Robby just wants to share his knowledge with people. He and Cristin want people to leave Wasabi feeling better than when they walked in.

This year Wasabi celebrates their 22-nd anniversary at their annual Tuna Cutting Event. They bring a 300 pounds fresh tuna from Indonesia and welcome locals to experience a traditional Japanese tuna specialty. Chef Robby cuts the tuna in front of the guests and creates delicious Japanese-Indonesian appetizers from fresh tuna paired with unlimited sake and beer from their partners: Ozeki sake and Iwai Japanese whiskey. Guests will be served delicious drinks at the event supported by their alcohol sponsors. This year the event will take place at Wasabi on November 10th from 6.30-9.30 pm.

Wasabi’s signature dishes and welcoming environment are the kind of thing that people appreciate about Brooklyn. A lot of love goes into Wasabi. Robby and Cristin hope you take some of that love with you when you leave.

ami Nori, which means “to surf” in Japanese, calls all the temaki sushi lovers to Brooklyn.

Nami Nori is a Japanese restaurant specializing in open temaki from partners Taka Sakaeda, Jihan Lee, and Lisa Limb, with locations in New York’s West Village and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While working under the only three-star Michelin sushi chef in the country, chef Masa Takayama, the trio teamed up to open the doors of Nami Nori in October 2019.

The restaurant has received two stars from The New York Times and was highlighted as one of Esquire’s “Best New Restaurants in America 2020,” Robb Report’s “10 Best New Restaurants in America,” and Bloomberg’s “Best Restaurant Dishes of 2019.”

Hand rolls (temaki) are basically the taco version of sushi rolls. A single large piece of crispy seaweed on the outside with the same variety of ingredients – raw fish, seafood, vegetables, rice – on the inside spilling out from one end to the other.

The Williamsburg Brooklyn location has two temaki counters. While the interior is flawlessly minimalistic with comfy, cozy vibes, there are also large glass doors that fully open, leading to the patio-outdoor seating section which overlooks the iconic McCarren Park. Samantha Tan amantha Tan grew up in a small town north of Toronto called Gormley. While her mom worked as a mutual fund manager downtown, she and her little brother spent a lot of time with their dad. Samantha’s dad is a passionate car enthusiast and used to watch a lot of Formula One, so she went to car meets and track days with him as a kid.

That’s when she quickly fell in love with the feeling of speed. “I remember always egging him on to go faster when he drove me to school,” Samantha tells INLOVE. “When I was finally old enough to reach the pedals, my dad enrolled me in some performance driving schools so I could learn car control for our lovely Canadian winters.”

t just 14 years old, Samantha had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Ferrari Driving Experience at Circuit Mont Tremblant, making her the youngest participant ever. “At the end of the program, I got to go on a hot lap in a Ferrari 458

Challenge race car with a pro driver. The extremely late braking, hard acceleration, and G-forces just blew me away. As soon as I stepped out of the car, I made the decision that I wanted to be a race car driver as well,” she recalled.

Samantha started the process of obtaining her racing license when she was only 15 and competed in her first regional races at 16. “My first ever race car was a 1991 Honda Civic, and I’m proud

to say I podiumed in one of my very first races at VIR. I went on to race in my first national Series, the Canadian Touring Car Championship, and was crowned Rookie of the Year after finishing the season 5th out of 22 cars. I moved to pro racing in Pirelli World Challenge the following year with the KIA team, Kinetic Motorsports, and in 2017, I started my very own race team, Samantha Tan Racing, with two BMW M235iRs. Since then, I’ve been a proud BMW partner and

slowly moved up the classes in sports car racing, racing touring cars and GT cars around the world — and my dad was with me every step of the way,” she went on to explain.

During this time, Samantha was also balancing being a full-time student at the University of California, Irvine, and eventually graduated with a degree in Economics in 2020.

In 2017, she had the biggest crash of her career — hitting a wall at 100mph. Her car was almost totaled. “I sprained my ankle, my self-confidence was shattered, and I couldn’t find the motivation to pick myself up off the ground for a while,” Samantha shared.

“I remember I started receiving hate comments like ‘woman driver moment,’ ‘you’re not a pro driver, you’re just an amateur,’ or ‘you’re more of a model

than a race car driver.’ I sincerely debated giving it all up because I didn’t know if I’d ever have the skills to succeed. At the time, I didn’t have a pro podium to my name. I was 20 years old and trying to find my place in the world. In hindsight, I was spreading myself too thin trying to balance having a social life, being a full-time student, and being a full-time racing driver.”

ELITE PERSONALITIES It made her realize her potential in the sport and that if she wanted to win, she had to fully dedicate herself to honing her skills. Samantha ended up taking a quarter off school to refocus, prioritize seat time and training, and re-discover the balance she needed to manage both school and racing. “I had to fine-tune my time management and mental discipline and chose to make many sacrifices in order to continue progressing,” Samantha says. “After a couple of years, the results started to show.”

She credits that experience with giving her the resilience she has today. “Racing has taught me many life lessons: one of them being how to learn from failure and adamantly push through self-doubt,” she continued. “I am so grateful to my younger self for choosing herself and her dreams; I would have never known the feeling of standing on the top step of the podium and making history without giving myself the grace and self-love I deserved.”

Samantha and her brother are first-generation immigrants, as both their parents immigrated to Canada from Southeast Asia when they were young, looking for better opportunities. They came to Canada with nothing and had to work extremely hard with the limited resources they had to build their careers into what they are today. They showed the pair that success could be found through dedication and hard work. “We aimed to be just like them and are forever grateful for the opportunities they provided us so that we would not have to live like they did growing up,” Samantha said.

“Growing up, we lived in a predominantly White community, and my brother and I were some of the very few Asians at school. The only glimpses we had of our culture were at family events, such as dim sum lunches or dinner parties at our relatives’, and watching Hollywood portrayals of Asian culture like ‘Mulan.’ I definitely had the token Asian-Canadian identity crisis growing up, which became increasingly evident at school. Unfortunately, I used to hate my culture,” Samantha admits. “I hated being Asian because it meant that I was different. In school, it separated me from my White classmates, so I rejected my culture in every way that I could. I said I despised Chinese cuisine, rejected learning Mandarin, and degraded my own race in an effort to conform to the Whiteness that surrounded me. I never felt like I belonged. The more ‘Asian’ jokes I made, the more my friends seemed to like me, even though I was perpetuating stereotypes and deteriorating my own self-confidence. I never realized the impact this had on me until I found myself defining who I was by the stereotypes assigned to me.”

Samantha says that, regrettably, this internalization was something she continued to hold onto until the start of her career. “We all know the stereotype, ‘Asians can’t drive.’ To have this constantly reinforced by the media and society, I initially doubted whether I would ever be successful in racing or if I would be hindered by my race,” she voiced. “I had no role models in the industry that looked like me.”

ELITE PERSONALITIES But as Samantha navigated the motorsports world, grew in her career, and regained confidence by re-discovering her culture and heritage, she realized how important it was to be the representation she lacked in a sport that deserves diversity. She learned that she could define herself on her own terms. “My culture and identity are now a reminder of the barriers I’ve broken, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the successes I’ve achieved,” Samantha expressed.

“It reminds me of my family, who have always supported me and worked tirelessly to ensure that I had the foundation needed to succeed, and it’s something I am endlessly proud of.”

Samantha’s specialty is sportscar racing, which is composed mostly of street cars converted into race cars.

GT3 cars are basically the ultimate racing versions of what car companies can do with their production cars – most of the cars you see racing, you can buy the street-legal version at a dealership. The race cars are light, compared to the road-going versions, but still very heavy compared to single-seaters and have a closed cockpit. Most sports car races also take place on road courses and can have the format of sprint, 30 minutes to 3 hours, or endurance, where races can be between 4 to 24 hours long.

“I’ve been a BMW fangirl for as long as I can remember, which again started with my dad, as he had a eurospec E36 M3 that he would drive my brother and me to school in,” Samantha explained about her love of BMW Motorsports. “My first car was the iconic BMW 1M, a very special first car. I learned how to drive manual with it, went to racing school in it, and eventually got my racing license in Quebec with it as well. The car ended up becoming one of my best friends - strange to say I have befriended an inanimate object - because it’s been through so much with me. I was introduced to the car community and made so many wonderful friends because of it, and I can confidently say I will never sell it. When I had the opportunity to become a partner with the brand, it was a dream come true. Altogether, it’s that excited, inner child feeling I get every time I’m behind the wheel of my 1-series or M4 race car that makes me love BMW with all my heart.”

At 25, she has already accomplished so much. She’s not only a professional race car driver, but she’s the team owner of Samantha Tan Racing. Samantha says she’s proud and thankful for her little Canadian team. “I am always so grateful to have such supportive co-drivers and team members; it is what I attribute my successes to today,” Samantha asserted.

“When my dad and I first started the team and were at our first racing events, no one took us seriously. No one thought that this little female-owned Canadian team would be able to compete against long-established racing teams.

Last year even at our first race in the 24H Series, I remember talking to someone that we wanted to win the championship, and they actually scoffed. We finished last year winning all six titles we were eligible for,” Samantha declared.

ELITE PERSONALITIES “We are by no means the biggest team in the paddock,” she continued. “By that, I mean we are relatively new to the game, we don’t have the biggest budget, and we’re up against teams that have been racing longer than I’ve been alive. Despite this, Samantha Tan Racing has represented our country at some of the most prestigious racing events on the planet and proven that with hard work, tenacity, and genuine passion for its goals, we can do anything we set our minds to. In the future, I hope to bring my team with me to the 24H of LeMans and become the first Asian woman to win. Along the way, we hope to win more championship titles, start a Junior Program to help the future generation chase their dreams as I have, and prove that women have always had the ability to be successful in places of leadership.”

Samantha is now the first Asian woman to win a major international endurance racing championship. She’s also the Ambassador for the AAPI Victory Alliance. “Becoming the first Asian woman to win a major international endurance racing championship was surreal,” Samantha shared. “I’ve always been obsessed with becoming the role model I never had, and I feel that this achievement made me considerably closer to that goal. I feel that Asian women have generally been perceived as docile, submissive, not strongwilled, and not outspoken. I want to redefine this stereotype. When someone sees an Asian woman, I want them to see us as powerful, independent, and valued. That’s why representation is so important – if you can see it, you can be it.”

Samantha says that she herself felt incredibly empowered by the Asian excellence she saw in the 2020 Olympics. “I hope that seeing my journey and successes will inspire and empower them,” She added. “I hope it makes them feel deeply proud of who they are.”

This year, Samantha and her team made history at the 12 Hours of Mugello race in Italy – marking her first win overall and the first-ever win for the new BMW M4 GT3.

There are a ton of firsts that happened in this one instance. “It’s always amazing to be the first, but I also hope it doesn’t mean that I’m the last,” said Samantha. “I hope that my achievements help inspire other girls to pursue their passions unapologetically.”

It was one of her favorite moments of the year. It was the culmination of so much

hard work, character-building moments, and learning experiences. “Everything was executed flawlessly, from the strategy to the pit stops and the stints driven by myself and my co-drivers,” she remarked. “We not only won in our class, we won overall. This meant we took BMW’s first-ever win with the BMW M4 GT3. It meant we were forever going to be a part of BMW’s history books. When we stood on the podium with the Canadian flag being raised behind us once again, I couldn’t help but think about all the times people doubted us and doubted me and how we rose above them all. I still can’t describe the flurry of emotions I felt.”

Earlier that same month, Samantha had her debut in the Ferrari Challenge series at Circuit of the Americas. She became the first woman to pole [qualify first] and win a race in the Pirelli class. She also set a class track record that weekend. It all aligned, coincidentally, on International Women’s Day. “Another cool opportunity I had this year was hosting the Tag Heuer Miami GP event and getting to interview Red Bull Racing’s World Champion Max Verstappen and Checo Perez,” Samantha said. “Never in a million years did I expect that I would go from a small town in Ontario to meeting two of the most famous drivers in the motorsport industry.”

She also attended the Ferrari Spring/ Summer 2023 fashion show at Milan Fashion Week. Samantha said it was a whole new experience for her, and seeing the artistry and design that went into each of the runway looks fascinated and inspired her. “In the future, I hope to bridge the fashion, lifestyle, and sportscar racing world in the same way Lewis Hamilton did for Formula One,” Samantha announced. “Next year, I’ll be competing in the biggest sportscar racing series in North America, IMSA, as I slowly take the next steps towards achieving my ultimate goal of LeMans.”

On finding yourself and going after your dreams, Samantha says, ”No matter how many times society tries to put you in a box and hold you back, to tell you who and what you should and can be: you will always have the power and freedom to be who you want to be, achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself, and define success on your own terms, because I firmly believe there is no limit to what you can accomplish.”

rom human to vampire, J. August Richards is still slaying. The actor, who has made numerous TV and film appearances in fan favorites throughout the decades, rose to fame in 2000 when he landed the role of Charles Gunn - one of television’s most beloved vampire slayers - on “Angel.”

Since then, Richards has continued “Raising the Bar,” portraying a long list of endearing characters, including Mike Peterson [Deathlok] in Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and Dr. Oliver Post in NBC’s “Council of Dads,” as well as standout roles in other popular shows such as “Notorious,” “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World,” and “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.”

In September, the Daytime Emmy nominee returned to the world of the undead, this time as royal vampire Victor Dashkov, in Peacock’s “Vampire Academy,” based on the popular YA book series by Richelle Mead.

Sari: Let’s go back to where it all started. Your role as Charles Gunn on “Angel.” What did you love most about playing that character?

J. August Richards: I loved his confidence. I loved that everything he did was to protect his family — first, his sister, who, ironically, he had to kill, and then Angel Investigations — The people he considered family.

Sari: What do you miss most about doing that show?

J. August Richards: The people. Oh, and working around the corner from my house at Paramount Studios. Fortunately, I just shot an episode of “The Rookie” there.

Sari: You reunited with the cast and crew in 2019 to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary. Could you ever see an “Angel” reboot or revival happening on air?

J. August Richards: I can see it. I think it would be great.

I would hope they’d allow a new generation of actors to take the roles, but I would also hope for a cameo!

Sari: You’ve played some of my favorite characters in MULTIPLE shows. If you could pick your top three and put them into one role, who would they be, what would your new character’s name be, and what would the genre or title of the show be?

J. August Richards: That is a thought experiment that is causing my brain to fritz! My characters are sacred to me. I spend a lot of time and thought thinking about them — thinking AS them — I couldn’t Frankenstein them and spit out the perfect creation. However, I will say that Victor on “Vampire Academy” feels like a “classic” J. August Richards role, if there is such a thing!

Sari: You’ve gone from vampire hunter to vampire royalty in “Vampire Academy.” Do you ever pull from your past “vampire experience” when it comes to developing the character of Victor Dashkov?

J. August Richards: I don’t because this is a whole different world with a whole different set of rules — a different tone.

I had to figure out who this character is totally from scratch, and it was a fun journey. The costumes and locations gave me a lot of Victor’s behavior. I’ve never stood so erect in my life!

Sari: What can you tell us about Victor Dashkov, and the character arc we’ll see this season?

J. August Richards: I once heard Meryl Streep say, “Give your character a secret.” Secretly, there was a question I was exploring with this character which was famously asked by Lorraine Hansberry: “What happens to a dream deferred?” I took it a step further and asked, “What happens to a dream deferred that suddenly becomes possible again?” What would it feel like to suddenly have available to you that dream you had once given up on? What would the effect be on the people around you? Then separately, I wanted to explore the question, “When have you gone too far in fighting for what you believe is right?” These questions gave me a lot to chew on with Victor.

Sari: Can we please talk about the incredible costumes they have you in for this role?! How does Victor’s style help you define your character? What does it add to your performance?

J. August Richards: I honestly had no idea how to play this character — a royal vampire who is the head of a royal bloodline and confidante to the 200-year-old vampire queen? He’s also married to Robert and the father of Sonya and Mia, in addition to being godfather and mentor Lissa, who is a newly named head of family. I was CLUELESS! But when I put on the costume [designed by Sonia Grande] and stood in those ancient castles and monasteries, I suddenly knew how to play him. My voice dropped an octave, and I grew two inches from standing up straight. My English got crisp, but my swag went to 100. I remember doing a take and asking the director if I could “do one for the hood.” What I meant by that was I wanted to bring some of what J. August Richards considers royal to the table — swag, and bravado.

Sari: Last time we caught up, you were starring in “Council of Dads.” What was it about that show and that character that was so special to you?

J. August Richards: Again, the people. My work is very important to me, so I am proud of the fact that I gave myself the freedom to speak about the experience from a truthful place.

That show will always be important to me.

Sari: We have to discuss your role as Mike Peterson/Deathlock in “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” What can you share with fans about what it’s like being part of the MCU and what that experience meant to you personally?

J. August Richards: I’m sure I sound like such a pretentious actor, but that role was very personal to me as well because in my life at that time, my back was up against the wall in the same way that Mike’s was in the pilot. I remember thinking, “If I could just speak to all the people out there who feel the same way, then it would have been a successful performance.” From attending conventions throughout the world, it touched people in just the way I had hoped.

Sari: What dream role, dream project, or dream collaboration would you love to do in the future?

J. August Richards: When asked what my dream role is, my mantra is always the same — “The next one!” I believe it is my job to figure out why the role I am tasked with is my dream role.

Victor is a dream role for the reasons I stated earlier. Whatever you see me in next, know that I have figured out for myself why it is my dream role.

Sari: Let’s talk love since we are INLOVE Magazine. We love seeing you so in love. What are some things we can all learn from you when it comes to having a happy and healthy relationship?

J. August Richards: Thank you! Yes, we are very happy! We had only been dating for two months when I got the role in “Vampire Academy,” which required me to move to Spain for seven months. He put his life on hold and moved to Spain with me while I shot. I’d say the willingness to sacrifice is important.

Sari: You’ve talked about teaching on Instagram before. What would a class with you look like?

J. August Richards: [Laughs] Yes, I’d love to teach. A class with me might look like it’s about acting, but it’s really about artistry — being an artist. What I would teach, I hope, could be applied to any art form.

Sari: What advice would you offer new actors, or anyone, really, when it comes to advocating for yourself?

J. August Richards: Actors are groomed to show a lot of deference and “just be happy to be there,” but if you don’t advocate for yourself in a healthy way, it can literally lead to abuse. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and most importantly, if you’re not sure, find a colleague whose career you respect and get their take on the situation. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Sari: What is a fun fact about any one of the shows you’ve been on that would surprise fans?

J. August Richards: I auditioned to play Lafayette on “True Blood.” Obviously, the role went to the late, great Nelsan Ellis, who I was lucky enough to call a friend.

Some Like It Hot Rafael Cebrián Season 2 of “Acapulco” debuted on Apple TV+ in October, which means Rafael Cebrián (also known for “Narcos,” “Borgia,” “Greenhouse Academy,” and most recently - “The Calling”) is back as Hector.

“I

n season 2, we are going to see Hector’s hopeless romantic side in full display,” the actor tells INLOVE. “He’s looking for love, words are his weapon, and you’ll see how that affects him throughout the 10-episode storyline. Coming from season 1, I think our audience will be surprised with Hector this time around. Sometimes we are quick to judge someone based on the decisions they make, but I believe we need to know who that person really is to fully understand why they make those decisions. That’s why I was excited to jump back into Hector’s shoes for a second time. I get to show the man living behind the hairspray and the short shorts.”

Sari: Season 2 picks up where season 1 left off. What can fans expect from the show this season without giving too much away?

Rafael Cebrián: Season 2 is better, bigger, stronger, and more pink! Season 1 was all about setting the stage and creating the world of “Acapulco.” Now, in season 2, we get to play, explore, and have fun in that world. The ensemble in the show really comes to light this time around. The writers did an amazing job giving every single character an arc of their own this season. Audiences are going to know more about the background of the workers at Las Colinas. I know they will be surprised by where the story will take them in season 2. Expect the unexpected.

Sari: Is there anything you learned about playing a poolside attendant that you didn’t know before you started this project?

Rafael Cebrián: I always thought I didn’t need to wear sunscreen. Playing Hector has proved me wrong. I need sunscreen in my life.

Sari: The first season of “Acapulco” was shot during the pandemic. How was it shooting this time around?

Rafael Cebrián: One of the many beautiful things you get from filming abroad, on location, is the fact that you get to fully immerse yourself in the culture of the country you’re working.

I love walking around local neighborhoods and restaurants and going to concerts in local bars. Unfortunately, during the first season, we didn’t get to that at all because we were all in a bubble due to the pandemic. Season 2 was a little different.

We had the chance to leave the hotel and explore the city a little more. Not as much as we would’ve liked to, but enough to understand the cultural background of where we were filming.

It’s beautiful down there. I really hope we get to go back for a third time around. Mexico always feels like a second home to me. The “joie de vivre” is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been.

Sari: Last time we caught up, we talked about how you played “Jump” by Van Halen before you started every scene. Did you keep that tradition for season 2, or did you choose a new theme song this season?

Rafael Cebrián: It was all about “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood this time around.

Sari: Critics and fans alike have raved about “Acapulco.”

What’s been the most thrilling part of this journey for you so far?

Rafael Cebrián: As a storyteller, I’ve always dreamed of telling stories that would resonate in people’s hearts. “Acapulco” is one of those stories, and I am so grateful for having the chance to be a small part of it. It’s also exciting to be part of a series showcasing the Latinx/Hispanic experience to its fullest.

Latinos/Hispanics come in many shapes and forms. We are Mexicans, Colombians, Argentineans, Venezuelans, Dominicans, Spaniards - but we all connect through our language. We all share the same culture. There’s an immense amount of value in telling it as it is and showing it as it looks. “Acapulco” does that, and it does it through comedy. To me, that’s exciting.

Sari: You recently switched gears from comedy to drama for David E. Kelley’s new Peacock crime drama, “The Calling.”

What can you tell us about Brad Holt?

Rafael Cebrián: I’ve never played a character like Brad Holt before, and I was up for the challenge. It was also my return to drama after a couple of years in the comedy world, and I was thrilled about that. I started work on “The Calling” a week after I wrapped on “Acapulco,” so it took some adjusting on my end at first.

Sari: What kind of show will we get from “The Calling?” What do you think it is about the story viewers will enjoy the most?

Rafael Cebrián: “The Calling” follows Detective Avraham, played by the amazing Jeff Wilbusch, as one particularly dark and twisty case upends everything he thought he knew. The show toes the line between earnest investigation and wry commentary. It is not your typical detective series, which grabbed me from the jump.

Sari: You really had an all-star team at the helm. David E. Kelley and Barry Levinson as EPs, and Hans Zimmer serves as co-composer. What was it like being in a collaborative effort with those forces?

Rafael Cebrián: David E. Kelley and Barry Levinson are television maestros who deeply understand rich and multilayered characters. Their specific imagination, combined with the overall brilliance of the whole cast and crew I got to work with, made it a joy to come to set every day. I was lucky to have had the chance to contribute to the world they created and learn from such talented people.

Sari: You once told me that your approach to acting is very musical. Can you tell me more about that?

Rafael Cebrián: To me, acting is music in the sense that, just like in a tune, there are beats, cadences, silences, and harmonies in a scene. That’s why I believe that every actor is a musician but not every musician is an actor.

Sari: Are there any music projects in your future?

Rafael Cebrián: I’m surrounded by musicians daily, and I’m always writing, coming up with melodies and lyrics. Lately, I’ve rekindled my relationship with drumming. I’m focused on my career as an actor and writer right now, but who knows what can happen one day? Maybe I’ll step back into music.

Sari: Are you working on anything else right now?

Rafael Cebrián: I’m developing a TV series based on a fascinating IP I recently acquired. I’m very excited about it. It’s a fascinating story that’s very close to my heart, unlike anything I’ve ever seen on TV before. I can’t tell you more at the moment, but you’ll hear more about it soon.

Sari: What are you most INLOVE with right now?

Rafael Cebrián: The 1975’s new album Being Funny in a Foreign Language and Celeste Ng’s new book “Our Missing Hearts.”

Sari: Any words of wisdom or a bit of advice you’ve learned that you’d like to pass on to readers?

Rafael Cebrián: I’m not one to give advice. I’m always looking for advice myself! I guess - lead with your gut, and your truth will follow.

etta Walker comes from a family full of artists. “We just never had the money or the resources to pursue the things we loved the way wealthier people had, so I watched my family make their art just because they loved it,” the “All American: Homecoming” star tells INLOVE.

“My mom is an incredible seamstress and designer and was a model in Japan when she was younger. All three of my older brothers are incredibly artistic people as well. I’ve been lucky enough to grow up watching all of their processes. It’s been pretty easy to be inspired.”

That inspiration led Walker to pursue a career as an actress, model, writer, director, and producer. She’s also an activist. Walker used her voice to bring light to the sexist, sexual, physical, and racist abuse she and many other students faced while pursuing theatrical degrees at Roosevelt University. That, in turn, allowed hundreds of others to speak out about their experiences as well.

Sari: When did you know you wanted to use your voice as an environmentalist and a social justice advocate?

Netta Walker: When you’re born a Black and Asian woman, there’s not really a choice in whether or not you’re going to be a social justice advocate. My parents taught me that right before I started elementary school, around when I was four years old. In terms of environmentalism, it would’ve been around that same time. I really wanted to be an astronomer after my dad showed me the movie “Contact” for the first time. He got me my first telescope and every book on space he could find, and I’d ask him so many questions. Do other planets have life? Are we alone in the universe? Which made me really scared. I think I was a bit too young to handle that. But I really didn’t want our planet to become like the ones I was learning about.

Sari: As someone who uses their platform to change the world for the better, how do you hope to continue to do that, and how would you encourage others to do the same?

Netta Walker: I’d hope to inspire others to want to do the same, to care about people, and to care about the planet that gives us life. I plan to continue to follow my intuition and speak up when I feel compelled to. Everyone has a voice, and I think it’s very important to use it to stand up for what’s right, so I’d encourage others to remember that.

Sari: The second season of “All American: Homecoming” debuted in October. What will we see from your character this season, and how have you used your real-life experiences to create Keisha McCalla?

Netta Walker: You’ll see Keisha learn what it really means to be in a conservatory program this season.

If you’ve been in that setting, you know it’s a histrionic experience. I studied musical theater voice in a conservatory program at university, so her story hits really close to home. I low-key carried a lot of trauma from those three years in school, so much so that I didn’t even finish and get my degree. I quit singing and dancing almost entirely when I dropped out because I was so used to being told I wasn’t good enough and would never be. Conservatory programs have long histories, many of which carry very dated teaching processes that often create a lot of mental, physical, and emotional turmoil in students. So that storyline has been a wild journey to re-explore.

ENTERTAINMENT Sari: What are three traits you admire about the character of Keisha McCalla?

Netta Walker: I admire her honesty, her willingness to work on herself and that she’s not afraid to share that vulnerability with the people she loves, and how she values her relationships.

She loves very deeply and sincerely.

Sari: What’s your favorite thing about playing her?

Netta Walker: Sometimes it feels like cheating getting to play her. She’s so similar to who I was my first few years in college. In a way, it feels like I get to cosplay as my younger self and work out some traumas I wasn’t capable of understanding at the time.

Sari: I know one of your teachers significantly impacted you and directed you toward the theater. How did that influence you and how has your theatrical work has changed your life?

Netta Walker: Without Shirley Kirby, I wouldn’t have gotten through high school. She gave me theater, which gave me a chance at living.

She gave me a good group of theater kid friends, who kept me on the straight and narrow and showed me that show tunes couldn’t hurt anyone.

She taught me not to be afraid of shining or doing things differently because my uniqueness was beautiful.

She got me to travel to New York City to see productions and do thespian festivals so I could see that there was work outside of my hometown bubble and that there were artists who were living and breathing Shakespeare, Shaw, and Sondheim. Shirley gave me something to be passionate about.

Theater became the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m forever indebted to her.

Sari: This CW show marks your first major role. Regarding acting, what do you hope to see out of your career?

Netta Walker: I just hope I have a long and fulfilling career and that I’m happy. And I’m just crossing my fingers for season three. Otherwise, I’m excited to venture into independent film.

ENTERTAINMENT Sari: What kind of stories do you hope to tell as a writer/director/producer?

Netta Walker: Stories that show real people from all walks of life with honesty and complexity. I love complicated stories. I’ve still got so much to learn, though. I really want to shoot something in Jacksonville. I want to shoot something about my family and our little slice of life in my hometown. That would be insane.

Sari: What do you love most about modeling?

Netta Walker: The play and trial and error of it all, it’s like I get to act out what the outfit feels.

It’s also kind of like I get to jump into an alter ego and just play around. My brother Anthony and my mom used to make me model all of the pageant dresses my mom used to design when I was really little, so doing it now makes me kind of feel like that kid again.

Sari: What do you see for your future, and what kind of impact do you hope to have on others?

Netta Walker: I hope to have a career that gratifies me artistically and that I can help folks feel seen in some way. But mainly, I hope my work as an actor can allow me to become the philanthropist, I wish I saw more of. I want to be able to open doors for people who wouldn’t have had the access before and to open doors to conversations people may be nervous about having.

Sari: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Netta Walker: Hopefully happy, whatever that looks like at that point in my life.

Sari: Is there something that means a lot to you that you’d like to share with readers?

Netta Walker: Over 80 percent of Jackson, Mississippi’s 150,000 residents are Black, and about a quarter of the population lives in poverty.

The neglect of the water system showcases the systemic issues poor Black folks in this country continue to face. We’re still seeing it in Flint, Michigan - it’s been eight years. With the current acceleration of climate change, more and more people of color will face this issue across the world. Environmental racism has historically been a problem and will continue to be one if we don’t fight against it. “I

fell in love with acting when I created a theater space at my high school senior year in order to play Corie Bratter in ‘Barefoot in the Park,’” says Paige Spara. “I loved the community it provided, the creative journey it took us all on to make the stage and props. That was the first time I performed for that long on the stage. I never wanted it to end.”

Doing theater in New York prepared Spara for her breakout television role as Lea Dilallo in “The Good Doctor.” “It really strengthened my ability to think on the spot and to allow myself to be present in the casting rooms in order to be as natural as possible,” the actress tells INLOVE. Spara now stars opposite Freddie Highmore on the ABC drama, having been a fan favorite and series regular since season 2. “I love exploring how she loves and receives love,” the actress says is her favorite part about playing this character.

Sari: Looking back, can you describe that moment when you first found out you were going from a recurring role to series regular in season 2?

Paige Spara: I was in my manager, Genevieve Penn’s, office after a long day of casting meetings. I had to discuss which opportunity I could potentially sign on to be a part of moving forward, as being on “The Good Doctor” the first season really launched interest for future jobs. As Genevieve and I were discussing some of the options, she got a phone call from Sony offering me the series regular job. Needless to say, we celebrated as soon as she hung up the phone. We screamed and ate our faces off that night. It was glorious.

Sari: What has Shaun Murphy and Lea’s love taught you about love in real life?

Paige Spara: Their love taught me the importance of accepting and valuing your partner’s own journey in life and how important it is to hold space for one another - to have the hard conversations together. Through that kind of love, you not only get to explore and evolve into the best person you can be, but you also get to reap the benefits of partnership through that level of security you’ve built. You now have all of this brain space to live life fully - together.

Sari: What has working with Freddie Highmore taught you in real life?

Paige Spara: Freddie has reminded me over and over again how capable I am of doing this job. The confidence and selflove this man instills in me have always checked me to never settle for less. He reminds me that I am loveable and capable and deserving of living my dreams and falling in love with the right partner.

Sari: What has been the most thrilling part about being a part of “The Good Doctor?”

Paige Spara: Every time I look around on set while we are setting up the shot and I feel everyone on the crew coming together to collaborate on the vision that day - all hands on deck - all happy to be there doing what we love - there’s just no greater feeling.

ENTERTAINMENT Sari: What has your process been like as you’ve developed your character arc over these last few seasons?

Paige Spara: My process is to remain curious, nonjudgmental, and flexible in order to authentically process and speak these moments into existence.

Sari: What would you say are the show’s strongest aspects? The reasons people tune in and are so dedicated to it?

Paige Spara: I think the show’s strongest aspects are to tell stories that have two sides to every story. It allows our audience to remain universal in their emotions, all while presenting possible new perspectives on intimate matters that could inspire hope, feeling seen, and feeling validated in their experiences.

Sari: Are there any fun behind-thescenes stories that have happened on set you can share?

Paige Spara: Freddie Highmore has a sixth sense for pranks and is almost impossible to scare and it is my mission to scare him shitless at least once before the series ends. I fail every time [laughs].

Sari: Season 5 ends with Shaun and Lea getting married. What can you tell us about what’ll come in season 6?

Paige Spara: In season 6, Shaun and Lea will be navigating overcoming trauma from Lea’s miscarriage and how they both cope, along with trying to conceive again. As well as navigating marriage and what that means to both of them.

Sari: Where would you like to see yourself grow from here as an artist?

Paige Spara: I would love to continue to tell female-led stories overcoming trauma in relation to themselves and the world. I would love to do a rom-com because they are my happy place. I would love to write and direct one day. I would love to try it all, really.

Sari: Do you have any hidden talents?

Paige Spara: I can eat two Whoppers from Burger King in the same sitting and not get sick because they make me so damn happy.

“I

’ve always been myself, no matter what age or what I was doing,” Avril Lavigne tells INLOVE, reflecting on her career. “I’ve always been a massive fan of music across so many genres, and I write songs that come naturally to me. A lot of the time, when I write, it comes out aggressive and angsty, but other times it is vulnerable and sensitive. Sometimes you will get ballads from me, and sometimes, you will get songs where I am venting about love. I try not to overthink it.”

It’s been two decades since the award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter changed the game with her debut studio album, Let Go. In 2002, the “Complicated” singer altered the music landscape with her pop-punk sounds and distinct style, bucking against the pop norms of the early ‘00s.

Early in her career, fans and critics tried to label her style, dubbing Lavigne the “Princess of pop-punk” and categorizing her as “post-grunge,” comparing her to artists like Alanis Morissette. But, the “Sk8er Boi” singer made it clear from the jump that she would make her own rules - and that she has as she consistently defines and redefines her voice with great success.

In 2022, Lavigne released her seventh studio album. Love Sux (her first under Travis Barker’s DTA Records) features vocal collaborations with artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Blackbear, and Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus. Songs such as “Bois Lie” and “Bite Me” tap into the nostalgic sound Lavigne embraced 20 years ago, inspiring a new generation of girls with her empowering progressive pop-punk ways.

While Lavigne continues to headline festivals worldwide and put out new music - like her single “I’m A Mess” with Yungblud (featured in the deluxe version of Love Sux) - she reminds everyone why she is, and always will be, pop-punk royalty.

Sari: People have tried to fit you into a genre, but I love how you have always called your own shots. How would YOU classify yourself as an artist, and how has your view of that changed over the years?

Avril Lavigne: I’ve always called myself the Mother Fuckin’ Princess because I am my own boss [smiles]. My view hasn’t really changed much, other than the fact that I started out as a 17-year-old, and I’m a woman now. Different emotions bring out different styles in me, so it all depends on how I’m feeling.

Sari: You were breaking records by age 17. How did you not lose yourself in the process of becoming the artist you are today? How have you kept a solid head on your shoulders, having found success at a young age?

Avril Lavigne: I am so lucky to have always been surrounded by great people and role models. When L.A. Reid signed me, he never once tried to change who I was. [He] told me to be myself and really trusted my vision. He gave me the confidence I needed to create. I’ve always kept my family close. A couple of them have been on the road with

me, and they always keep it real. Having people around you who have your best interests at heart and have your back is more valuable than anything else.

Sari: How has your personal evolution gone hand in hand with your evolution as an artist?

Avril Lavigne: They both go hand in hand together. As I go through life and have different experiences, that comes out in my music. I only know how to write about my life, so my artistry grows with me.

Sari: How has writing lyrics changed for you from adolescence to adulthood? Did your songwriting process evolve?

I know different albums meant different things to you or had different messages. At what points in your life were certain topics more relevant than others?

Avril Lavigne: On my first album, I wasn’t thinking about my message. I was writing about my life, angst, and what I was going through as a teenager and still living at my parent’s house. It was really incredible to see how my music resonated with my fans and how they related to it. I still keep that in mind when I am writing now. I try to keep a message of confidence and strength, and that is what I pull from. It is not intentional, but it is how I like to write, and I think it empowers people.

Sari: You earned praise from Shania Twain after you covered one of her songs. Is it possible that your next album could be a country album? Of course, Shania would be the obvious collaborator, but what other country music superstars do you dream of collaborating with?

Avril Lavigne: Never say never. I grew up listening to country, and I still love country. I have a truck, and I’ll drive around in it listening to country. Shania was super influential on my career, and I sang with her on stage at 14 in Canada. We’re both from small towns in Ontario, and she’s kept in touch with me throughout the years.

I’d love to do a country song or collab one day.

I’m a massive Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris fan as well.

Sari: You just performed at the When We Were Young Festival. You’re headlining shows all over the world. You’re standing on stage, performing in front of massive crowds, fans singing your lyrics back to you. What does that feel like after all these years?

Avril Lavigne: It never gets old. There is no better feeling than seeing people get lost in the moment with you.

Here’s to Never Growing Up Sari: Let’s discuss your collaboration with Yungblud on “I’m A Mess.” People have been talking about this for over a year. You’re good friends.

How did this all unfold?

Avril Lavigne: He asked me to perform “I’m With You” on his Livestream over the pandemic, and we hit it off. He’s so fun and amazing to hang out with. We worked together in the studio, and we wrote “I’m A Mess.” It came together so quickly and naturally. But timing is everything.

When it came time to talk about next releases, I knew this song had to come out. He is so insanely talented and has so much energy in the studio.

We’ve been together in the studio a lot recently, working on other things too.

Sari: Tell me about the deluxe version of Love Sux. What makes it deluxe?

Avril Lavigne: I am adding the Single “I’m A Mess” with Yungblud. We have a beautiful acoustic of “Love Sux,” “Bois Lie,” “Love It When You Hate Me,” and “Bite Me.” As well as two songs no one has ever heard before.

Sari: Now you’re signed with Travis Barker’s label. What does it mean to you to work alongside him in this manner?

Avril Lavigne: I love everyone I work with, and that’s what it’s all about; enjoying yourself. I am so lucky to work with someone so talented and iconic, but I’m even luckier to call them my friend.

INLOVESTORY COVER WITH FASHION Sari: You recently got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Years ago, when you were 16, you took a photo lying down on another star. I love how you recreated the pose from your initial visit to L.A. First, do you remember whose star you took a photo on? Second, what was that feeling like being able to make that dream come true?

Avril Lavigne: The photo we took was on film, and the flash blurs out the name. We’ve tried so hard to figure out who it is! We think it might be Tom Cruise. That day was so magical, and it truly was a full-circle moment. It really helped encapsulate what the last 20 years of my career have been, and it’s such an honor to have my name alongside so many greats.

What do you hope your journey teaches them?

Avril Lavigne: I hope they learn that you don’t need to be like anyone else to be great. You can only be yourself, so be the baddest person you can be.

Sari: You also just celebrated the 20th anniversary of your debut album, Let Go, which includes fan favorites like” Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated.” The release of your expanded edition features six bonus tracks, including your newly-recorded studio version of “Breakaway.”

What was it like revisiting this album as an adult, and what did you learn about yourself in the process?

Avril Lavigne: That album has always stayed very present in my life, but re-recording “Breakway” was a really cool experience. Kelly Clarkson did such a great job with it, but that song comes from a very special time in my life, so it felt right to put it on the record.

Sari: Looking into the future, what does the new era of Avril look like? Sound like?

Avril Lavigne: I’m working on new music in the studio, and you’re going to have to wait and hear it. I am also working on making “Sk8er Boi” a film, a documentary, and other creative ventures.

Sari: Looking back at where you started, how has the industry changed, and how has it affected you and your songwriting, especially with the growth of social media?

Avril Lavigne: The industry has changed a lot. People buy fewer albums and stream more than ever. Social media obviously plays a huge part in it, and I enjoy using it when it comes naturally to me. But my whole life, music has come first. The music has to be great before anything else matters.

My Happy Ending Sari: You’re not only known for setting trends in music but style as well. You just did this collection with Killstar. Do you feel like style has been another outlet of expression for you? And how does the way you express yourself translate into your designs?

Avril Lavigne: It absolutely is. I dress how I feel. The Killstar collection was super cool because I got to dive into things with them and design it in a cool way for other people to wear. We wanted to make things rock and roll but sophisticated and elegant.

Sari: You’ve designed clothes, developed fragrances, acted, been nominated and won over 100 awards. What’s something you haven’t done yet that you’d like to do?

Avril Lavigne: I’d love to have my own cooking show one day! That would be so fun.

Sari: As a female artist representing the music of the 2000s, you’re paving the way for other females now.

Avril Lavigne: I was talking the other day; I would love for the jelly bracelets to come back [laughs].

RIDE rock O’Hurn’s greatest escape as a kid was the movies. As he watched his heroes on screen, he knew he wanted to become that and give that same feeling back to others. “Movies saved me in a way,” the actor, model, fitness trainer, and producer tells INLOVE Magazine.

O’Hurn first garnered international fame via Instagram circa 2016 when he turned the man bun into a trend that’s still popularized today. The 6-foot-7 native Californian captured hearts worldwide with his smoldering good looks and chiseled physique, cemented his status as a longtime fitness expert, and became one of the most recognized male models, amassing millions of followers across his social media platforms.

In 2016, he made his big screen debut in Tyler Perry’s “Boo! A Madea Haloween,” a role he reprised in the 2017 sequel. After a series of TV appearances, including HBO’s smash hit “Euphoria” and more recently playing Torsten in the HBO comedy “The Righteous Gemstones,” O’Hurn is on the path he first dreamt of as a child.

“Be true to thine own self” and “Bring your own uniqueness into the world” are quotes that O’Hurn lives by. Underneath his ruggedly handsome exterior is a humble, family-oriented, kind, talented, and genuine human who strives to make the world a better place.

O’Hurn now has a slate of projects in front of the camera in the comedy realm, including Netflix’s “Players” (starring alongside Tom Ellis, Gina Rodriguez, and Damon Wayans Jr.), Tony Kaye’s film “The Trainer” (due out in 2023), and a role in an upcoming Hulu series. In between all this filming, he co-hosts his Studio 22 Podcast alongside film producer Will Meldman, where he dabbles in conversations about entertainment, sports, and business. He is also the founder of two companies: O’Hurn Media Inc. and Outlaw Logic Pictures.

On a hot summer’s day, O’Hurn left Hollywood and came riding into Joshua Tree on his Harley to meet with INLOVE Magazine to shoot the Cover of our winter 2023 issue.

What Women Want Sari: Do you believe in a soulmate?

Brock O’Hurn: I do. I believe we have more than one. Not always romantic and even in a twin flame.

Sari: What does being INLOVE look like to you?

Brock O’Hurn: It looks like a lot of things, but above all else, I’d say it’s finding safety in a partner. Commitment to the one you choose.

Sari: Describe your perfect woman.

Brock O’Hurn: I don’t think there is perfect.

Male, female, or anyone. And I think that is where the beauty truly lies.

Sari: You leave women speechless all the time but has a woman ever left you speechless?

Brock O’Hurn: More than once, and I’ll never forget it.

Sari: What is the most romantic thing you have ever done for a woman?

Brock O’Hurn: I wrote a year’s worth of love letters as a birthday gift. I think that counts as romantic?

Sari: What’s your dream date?

Brock O’Hurn: My dream date would last a week on an island with no cell service. Just great food, sunshine, and each other’s company.

Sari: Do you ever see yourself settling down, getting married, and having kids? If so, what would that life look like for you?

Brock O’Hurn: Yes, on all fronts. Happy and fulfilled.

Sari: What’s the wildest pick-up line you’ve ever gotten?

Either in a DM or in person?

Brock O’Hurn: Some things are not meant to be repeated [laughs].

Sari: Any advice on how a girl could win your heart?

Brock O’Hurn: I can’t say. But I do believe there is one woman out there who will be able to show up for me in all the ways I need and vice versa. Knowing no matter how hard or bumpy it gets, we’ll never quit each other.

Sari: What’s the biggest difference in your dating life going from “normal guy” to “celebrity status?”

Brock O’Hurn: I don’t see myself in any special way, so honestly, all I could hope for is to meet someone who is genuine and kind. I don’t think that’s ever changed for me.

On The Rise Sari: You are obviously so much more than the guy who made the entire world fall in love with a man bun. Was that a shock to you when that trend caught on and you realized that you were the one behind it?

Brock O’Hurn: It was a wild ride to be on and, yes, an absolute shock. Even now, I wonder how that happened!

Sari: How do you feel about man buns now?

Brock O’Hurn: Well, I wear one every day to get my hair out of my face, so I’m a fan.

Sari: How do you feel about trends in general?

Brock O’Hurn: I think trends are awesome. It’s another way for people to connect, and I think we need that.

Sari: When things started to take off for you, was there a specific moment when you realized you had turned into this international sex symbol?

Brock O’Hurn: Absolutely not [laughs]. I still haven’t realized that, if that’s a thing.

Sari: I know you realized that you wanted to be an actor at a young age. You recently did six episodes of “The Righteous Gemstones.” How or when did you figure out that comedy was your thing?

Brock O’Hurn: I have always loved comedy, but with my size and look, people just think of me to be more of a dramatic actor. I was very excited to have the opportunity to be with such a great and funny cast and be able to make people laugh.

Sari: Let’s talk about the new Netflix comedy, “Players.”

What can you tell me about your character in that?

Brock O’Hurn: My character is a fly fisherman, and I think I can say it seems he’s looking to have a little fun before he moves out of town…

Brock O’Hurn: “Seek and Destroy” by Metallica INLOVE: Any advice the Brock of today would offer the Brock of yesterday, pre-celebrity status?

Brock O’Hurn: I guess the same thing I’ve always said to myself. No matter what, just stay positive.

INLOVE: Favorite meal?

Brock O’Hurn: It’ll always be a great pizza.

INLOVE: Do you prefer to cook or order out?

Brock O’Hurn: I love to cook but ordering out a good meal is always a win.

INLOVE: Go-to karaoke song?

Brock O’Hurn: This one is more for the crowd. It’s “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys.

INLOVE: Funniest dad joke?

Brock O’Hurn: I don’t know if it’s the funniest, but I like it ...

Sari: I know you also have a big project coming out on Hulu that we can’t discuss quite yet. Is there anything you can share or tease that will get fans excited about what to expect?

Brock O’Hurn: What I can say is that this show is easily stacked with more celebrities and comedic geniuses than anything I’ve ever done previously. You will, without a doubt, see me in a light no one ever has before!

Sari: You’re also working on Tony Kaye’s new dark comedy, “The Trainer,” due out in 2023. What can you tell us about your role in that?

Brock O’Hurn: We shot hands down the most physical fight sequence I have ever been a part of, and I have a feeling it’s going to be something to see!

Sari: You’ve also founded two media companies; how do you hope to keep growing all you do?

Brock O’Hurn: Stay the course, work hard, and dream big.

I think as long as my passion for films and filmmaking alike remains, I will always pursue storytelling.

Sari: You are around other celebrities now all the time. Do you ever get super starstruck? Any good stories you can share if you have?

Brock O’Hurn: I don’t get starstruck, to be honest. For some reason, I never have. But the first time I met Vin Diesel, he told me his kids were big fans of mine from the “Madea” movies. So that was pretty wild.

Sari: You also put out a comic book over the summer KANE. What can you tell me about that? Where do you plan to go with that in the future?

Brock O’Hurn: KANE is an absolute passion project for me and my friend Will Meldman. It follows Kane as he discovers his mysterious past and life that intertwines with the Gods. It’s an absolute fantasy/action epic. Our goal is

Sari: You two also have a podcast. What can fans expect to hear when they tune in?

Brock O’Hurn: Our goal with Studio 22 Podcast has always been to spread positivity and give insight into leaders in business, entertainment, and sports.

Sari: Is there anything you haven’t done yet that you’d like to do?

Brock O’Hurn: There are plenty of things. I guess I could start with a day off. One day, of course [laughs].

Sari: What does the future of Brock O’Hurn look like to you today?

Brock O’Hurn: I don’t know what the future holds, but I have always believed I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be when I’m supposed to be there. I’ll let you know when I get there.
