EL COMERCIO DE COSTA RICA DURANTE EL DECLIVE DEL COMERCIO ESPAÑOL Y EL DESARROLLO DEL CONTRABANDO INGLES: PERIODO 1690-1750

Abstract. The first half the eighteenth centu ry w as a p eriod of rad ical change in the d evelop m ent of CostaRica`s foreign trad e. At the end of the seventeenth centu ry, settlers of Sp anish d escent confronted both a d eclining Ind ian p op u lation and the clou su re of the Panam anean m arket to w ich they exp orted p rovisions p rod u ced w ith Ind ian labou r. They therefore sou ght w ays of d iversifyng trad e. The d evelop m ent of cacao cu ltivation in the Matina Valley and the exp ort of cacao to N icaragu a and Portobelo, (in Panam a), tem p orally enabled them to continu e im p orting good s u navailable in Costa Rica. In the eighteenth centu ry, how ever, Jam aica, Cu racao and the Mosqu ito Shore becam e the p rincip al ou tles for cacao exp orts and su p p liers of im p orted Eu rop ean m erchand ise. The Costa Rica settlers thu s forsook their trad itional layalty to the Sp anish Crow n by trad ing w ith Sp ain’s colonial rivals. They also exp orted m u les to Panam a and established trad ng links w ith variou s Pacific p orts in Central Am erica, Mexico and Peru . Resumen. La p rim era m itad d el siglo d ieciocho constitu yó u n p eríod o d e transform aciones rad icales en el d esarrollo d e las relaciones m ercantiles d e Costa Rica con el exterior. Al térm ino d el siglo d iecisiete los colonizad ores d e origen hisp ánico tu vieron qu e enfrentar tanto el d escenso d em ográfico d e los ind ígenas com o el cierre d el m ercad o p anam eño, hacia d ond e exp ortaban los abastos p rod u icd os con la m ano d e obra d e los ind ígenas. Por ello, d esd e estos años iniciaron d iversas tentativas p ara d iversificar su com ercio. Con el d esarrollo d el cu ltivo d el cacao en el Valle d el Matina y su exp ortación hacia N icaragu a y Portobelo (en Panam á) m om entáneam ente lograron m antener su s im p ortaciones d e bienes no obtenibles en CostaRica. N o obstante, en el siglo d ieciocho los p lazas com erciales d e Jam aica, Cu razao, y costa Mosqu itia se convirtieron en los centros p rincip ales d el com ercio d e exp ortación d e cacao y d e im p ortación d e m ercancías eu rop eas. De esta form a los colonos costarricenses rom p ieron su trad icional fid elid ad a la Corona esp añola entabland o relaciones com erciales con colonias d e sú bd itos d e coronas rivales a Esp aña. Pero este no fu e el ú nico com ercio qu e se m antu vo estos años p u es tam bién se exp ortaban m u las hacia Panam á y se establecieron vincu laciones m ercantiles con d iversos p u ertos d el Pacífico, tanto d e Centroam érica com o d el Perú y México.
