Táin Arts Centre
An Táin Arts Centre is the new arts space for Dundalk, Co. Louth based in the former Táin Theatre, Town Hall, Crowe Street. Established as an independent organisation earlier this year, the board of An Táin Arts Centre has been working behind the scenes to reimagine this wonderful space as a point of access to arts and culture for the people of North Louth, and together with a small team of staff, aims to provide a diverse programme of local arts, national tours, workshops, visual arts and in-house productions. It is heartening to see the commitment of Louth County Council towards the provision of arts to this community and we are in a fortunate position to have a three year funding agreement in place for An Táin Arts Centre. This support is not a privilege we take lightly, and in developing our programme of events we are ever cognisant of the rich heritage of the arts in this community - and in this building. It is telling that one of the first events to take place during the handover of the space to An Táin Arts Centre was the launch of the newly installed photographic collection curated by Joe Corcoran, ‘As You Like It’, in the Balcony Foyer. This unique collection documents some of the key participants in the Dundalk dramatic scene over the last century, and acts as a constant reminder to us of the creativity and ingenuity of the people in our community. This inaugural programme marks the launch of
An Táin Arts Centre, and a reimagining of this beautiful building. As well as housing a 355 seat theatre, a 55 seat studio theatre, a visual arts gallery and several workshop spaces, the ambition of An Táin Arts Centre extends far beyond these walls – so don’t be surprised to find our events throughout the locality. Programme highlights are numerous and include cinema in the Studio Theatre, opera and dance in the Theatre, three visual arts exhibitions in the Basement Gallery, and classes in drama, art and creative writing in our workshop rooms. Booking for events has never been easier, and we now have a newly designed website and mobile app where you can choose your seat and book your tickets at a time that suits you. Our box office will also be open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 to 16.00, and our staff will be more than happy to help you with your booking in person and by telephone. Double Back Ciaran O’Sullivan
An exhibition of new paintings by artist Ciaran O’Sullivan. This is O’Sullivan’s second solo show in the Basement Gallery, with works including both figurative and portrait paintings. Although he works within the traditional genre of life painting, the techniques and methods used are far from traditional. Amongst the colours and textures of thick oil paint, we find figures within the scene, sometimes hidden, sometimes not. Each piece has its own mood or theme but the interpretation of such is often left up to the viewer.

Irish Youth Opera in association with Wexford Festival Opera present The Rape of Lucretia, an opera by Benjamin Britten. In this opera of devastating beauty a state of perpetual war exists. Terror has a grip on the land. Justice has been put on hold, truth blurred and only the strong prevail. In such times a public story must still be told, a story to make sense of a world in turmoil. A secret crime will be committed for which a public explanation must be found. Will it herald change or a whitewashing? What should we be allowed to know about how our history is shaped and civilisations are formed? This bold updating of Britten’s chamber masterwork will showcase the best of emerging Irish singing talent in a daring staging of this searing tale of civic corruption, sexual desire and the abuse of power.

M.A.D. Youth Theatre ‘Connor’ is an original short play devised by senior members of M.A.D Youth Theatre. It’s a dark comedy about some of the pressures of being a young male in today’s society. A pretty average teenager Connor has found himself part of the world’s crude and misguided rites of passage of sex, drugs and alcohol. All this to be a man? We will witness this rapid spiral downwards as Connor steps up to be the man who’s not ready to grow up. Saint John of God North East Services at Saint Mary’s Drumcar Personal and creative expression are key aspects of the activation programme for residents of Saint John of God North East Services at Saint Mary’s Drumcar. Artists in residence encounter the natural world through walking, observation and touch, providing the inspiration for art forms that reference the environment as a habitat for art. Peacebuilding through Digital Arts Dundalk Youth Centre and Craobh Rua Through a programme of peace building workshops, digital arts training and study visits, young people from the locality have created a series of digital arts pieces for exhibition. These unique artworks have taken the form of film, photography, animation, music production and web design, and all focus on a particular aspect of conflict resolution or peace building.

Dundalk Musical Society is delighted to bring you their 63rd annual presentation “Fiddler on the Roof”. The story follows father of five, Tevye, as he tries to uphold tradition in an ever-changing political and social landscape. During a period of change for Russian Jews, the family learn to cope with the decline of Tsarist Russia and the tough laws enforced on the family and the village of Anatevka. The musical is extremely popular worldwide, and was the first Broadway show to play for over 3000 performances.
The original production ran for almost 10 years. Numerous revivals and a film adaptation keep introducing the show to new audiences. This production features a stellar local cast who are sure to entertain with some of the greatest musical theatre numbers ever written including, If I were a Rich Man, Matchmaker and Sunrise Sunset to name but a few. Becoming Aoife Ward
Aoife Ward was born in 1993, and was raised in Dundalk, County Louth. Specialising in Fine Art in Belfast’s School of Art, she now studies between Dundalk, Belfast and Den Haag in the Netherlands. Aoife primarily works through paint and video: this is her first solo show. Heavily stained by personal experience in the places she lives, Aoife Ward’s painting and video work depict snippets of repressed emotions from day-to-day encounters. Process is integral to each piece. In her painting work, abstract forms and gestural lines create compositions which focus on the visual interests of colour, tone and
texture. The video and sound pieces explain her thinking, and demystify the painting process. “I use gestural application of paint to describe my experience of creating myself as a woman: the preening, rubbing, shedding and covering in a constant strive towards perfection. The need for us all to project a flawless exterior is reminiscent of an artist’s struggle to create the perfect composition.” ‘Becoming’ is the first instalment of the Basement Gallery’s Emerging Artists series.

The Elixir of Love
( L’elisir d’amore) Donizetti’s Famous for its spellbinding music and sublime arias, especially Una furtive lagrima, Donizetti’s ever-popular romantic comedy The Elixir of Love has it all, from unrequited love to devious deception and thwarted passion. Innovative director Oliver Mears updates the action, transfering it to a university campus, where Adina is a lecturer and Nemorino a nerdy student. Desperately in love with the beautiful but unattainable Adina, Nemorino is conned by fraudster Dr Dulcamara to buy some fake love potion, pledging himself to the army in order to pay for it. Sung in English, The Elixir of Love features a powerful cast led by Anna Patalong as Adina (who recently made her Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut) and Irish Soprano Sarah Reddin making her OTC debut, “who sparkles as the coquettish Giannetta” (Irish Times). Other cast include OTC stalwart John Molloy (Trinity Moses, Mahagonny and Zuniga, Carmen) as the crafty Dulcamara and James McOran Campbell as Belcore the lusty army recruitment officer. OTC Artistic Director Fergus Sheil conducts the 12-member orchestra and professional chorus.
Design is by Annemarie Woods, with costumes by Ilona Karas and lighting by Kevin Treacy. Each workshop is designed to foster and support creativity and confidence, with class sizes affording each child the individual attention they deserve. Through the programme, participants will also be supported in creating a piece of self-devised theatre for performance at the end of term. Grainne Rafferty (B.A. Performing Arts) has been facilitating drama classes for children and teenagers for the past 6 years.

Mockingbird School of Art. For ages 5 years plus. Every child is an artist, all they need is a blank canvas and a brush in their hand! Why not sub-contract the mess out to an experienced artist with oodles of ideas for your little sponge to absorb! In the Mockingbird Art School at An Táin Arts Centre children will develop a variety of ways to express themselves through creativity – and in this school the most important factor in the creative process is always FUN! Classes are run by local artist and arts facilitator Catherine Ennis. All materials provided. Remember to dress for mess!
