ELEMENT IS ECO-FRIENDLY

Element Moving proudly offers Eco-Friendly crates upon request for any customer moving locally. Using reusable crates has dramatically reduced waste that may be produced by using non-reusable materials. They are easy to pack in and are much more cost-efficient than traditional cardboard boxes. They require no tape and no time to set and eliminate the hassle of breaking down and recycling cumbersome cardboard boxes. They stack perfectly and take up much less packing space.

HOW TO PREP APPLIANCES

CLEAN & PREP THE STOVE

The stove should be thoroughly cleaned inside and out with the racks removed or securely fastened. If you have a gas stove, make sure the gas is turned off before disconnecting the line and be very careful. Gas lines can be fragile and need special handling. If you're unsure, call your gas company for help. Tape down the knobs and elements to ensure no parts get lost during the move.

UNPLUG THE FRIDGE

Empty the fridge and freezer. Clean and dry all surfaces. Remove racks or secure them so they do not shift during the move. If your unit has an ice maker, disconnect the water line, and make sure it's completely drained.

EMPTY THE DISHWASHER

Dishwasher units need to be emptied and the utensil holder/rack removed and packed separately. It's a good idea to clean the unit if needed. Run a cycle then let the unit dry before you tape the door closed.

PREPARE THE WASHER & DRYER

Washer and dryer units need special handling. Remove all hoses and pack separately in a box or place them in the washer or diver cavity for safekeeping. You will need to secure the drum for the washer so there isn't any damage during the move.

TAPE ALL THE DOORS & LIDS SHUT

Make sure all doors, cords, extra nuts, or screws are taped and secured before moving.

SECURE CORDS

Unplug each unit and secure the plug to the back using packing tape for all appliances. Don't let cords dangle or come loose.

THE MOST DIFFICULT ITEMS TO MOVE

When it comes to a local move, many homeowners don't realize until it's too late that some items in their homes are extremely difficult to safely relocate. Fortunately, with the help of an experienced moving company, even the most hard-to-move items can get from point A to point B without any issue. Here's a look at the most difficult items to move from your home and how our team of qualified movers approaches specific moving challenges.

PIANO MOVING

Although the sound of the piano may be music to the ears, moving a piano from one home to another can be a nightmare without the right experience. Pianos are extremely heavy instruments that can weigh as much as 1,400 pounds. This means that disassembly is usually required, and even that can result in damage to the instrument and injury to movers without experience. At the end of the day, hiring a professional mover that specializes in piano moves is not only the safest option but the smartest one. Only someone that specializes in the construction and deconstruction of a piano can guarantee fewer risks within the moving process.

ANTIQUE FURNITURE MOVING

Antique furniture can be large, heavy pieces of furniture. In most cases, these pieces are not built for disassembly and must be moved out of a home in one piece. Professional antique movers can secure your furniture, plan out a successful exit path and implement safe practices that mitigate the risk of irreparable damage to your furniture and your home.

FIREARM COLLECTIONS & GUN SAFE MOVING

Although general preparation and moving single firearms isn't exactly difficult to work, many families secure their larger firearm collections in large, heavy safes. Effectively clearing out gun safes and clearing the path for removal can be a difficult task without the help of a professional mover. Ensure that your firearm collection is moved without a dangerous misfire or damage to your valuables with Element Moving & Storage behind your move. We have the experience and equipment you need to safely move your firearm collection and have a stress-free move. We are happy to move your firearms but unfortunately cannot move any ammunition according to DOT guidelines.

WINE COLLECTIONS MOVING

Although wine collections can be easy to physically move, it can be difficult to keep them safe and at a regulated temperature that preserves the quality of your wine. Element Moving & Storage specializes in the relocation of valuable wine collections. We can help you pack your wines in safe, secure containers and ensure they remain at safe temperatures throughout your move. If your new home is not ready to welcome an extensive wine collection, our local storage services serve as an affordable, climate-controlled, and reliable solution to safeguard your wine for easy access when you need it. Ask your relocation consultant about storing your wines in our wine storage facility.

MOVING PLANTS

Move your plants to plastic planters a couple of weeks before the move. This makes the move of a living plant, a less jarring experience for the plant itself. On move day, move your plants into an open container for a mess-free move. Plants are usually forgotten until the very last minute and end up becoming one of the messiest aspects of a move. For your local move, make sure to consider your plants beforehand, so you are not stuck cleaning up any unexpected soil spills. Our tips for easy plant preparation are: Relocate your plants in your own vehicle to ensure they remain in a climate-controlled environment. If you’re moving Long Distance, your plants may be a nice going away gift to a plant lover or a neighbor. Unfortunately, we cannot move plants across state lines and ensure their longevity.

HOW CAN ELEMENT MOVING & STORAGE MAKE YOUR MOVE EASIER?

Aside from our experience with moving valuable collections, pianos, pool tables, and other bulky furniture, Element Moving & Storage comes with the most important aspect of your move; a quality moving plan. Well before your big move-out date, our team will review everything that needs to be moved, the packing supplies you'll need, and how we can safely maneuver your items out of your home.

PACKING TIPS

Empty drawers of breakables, spillable, non-transportable items, and anything that would puncture or damage other items.

Keep all parts or pairs of things together. For example, curtain rod hangers, mirror bolts, and other small hardware items should be placed in plastic bags and taped or tied securely to the article to which they belong.

Wind electrical cords. Fasten them so they do not tangle.

Add cushioning to the bottom of cartons. Place a two- or three-inch layer of crushed paper in the bottom cartons for cushioning.

Fill empty spaces with crushed paper As each layer is completed, add more crushed paper to make a level base for the next layer or use sheets of cardboard.

Pack similar items together. Don't pack a delicate china figurine in the same carton with cast-iron frying pans.

Wrap items individually in clean paper. Use tissue paper, paper towels, or facial tissue for delicate items. Colored wrapping paper draws attention to very small things that might get lost in a carton. Use a double layer of newsprint for a good outer wrapping.

Use newspapers for cushioning only. The ink can rub off & stain fine china.

Build up layers. Place the heaviest items on the bottom, medium weight next, and the lightest on top.

Fragile items need lots of cushioning. Cushion well with crushed paper, towels, & lightweight blankets. Be sure no sharp edges, or rims are left uncovered.

Limit carton weight to about 50 lbs. Avoid overloading cartons but strive for a firm pack that will prevent items from shifting; the cover should easily close without force, but should not bend inward.

Seal cartons tightly with tape. Make sure the tape is secure and that it will come off.

List the contents of the carton.

As you finish with each carton, list the contents on the side (for easy viewing while stacked) & in a notebook. You can also add a number or code the cartons.

Mark cartons you want to unpack first. Put a special mark on cartons you want to unpack first at destination.

Indicate your name and the room to which each carton should be delivered at the destination. Tape a sign on the door of each room at the destination corresponding to the carton labels so movers can get the cartons into the proper rooms quickly.

We take the extra steps to ensure your items get to your new home in the same condition that they leave your old home in. We do understand that things happen and for this reason, we offer a few options for protection at additional cost levels for your budget. Ask your Relocation Specialist if you have any questions.

Please note the following for both options:

Items that are boxed and packed by the client will not be covered.

Only items packed by Element Moving are covered.

All glass, televisions, china cabinets, marble, and any fragile items must be covered with materials beyond the basic moving blankets for us to move them.

Pressed wood items are not covered under the basic coverage rule. These items are fragile and not made to be moved often.

BASIC VALUATION

A household goods carrier's liability for loss or damage to any shipment is $.60 per pound per article. (Included in the cost of your move.)

For local moves, clients have 90 days from delivery to file a claim. For long distance moves, clients have 9 month from delivery to file a claim.

All damages must be noted on delivery.

*This is NOT full-coverage protection. If you wish to purchase additional full-coverage protection ask your sales representative about additional coverage. If you have high-value items, or are moving long distance we STRONGLY recommend purchasing additional coverage.*

FULL REPLACEMENT VALUE PROTECTION (FVP)

BASIC VALUATION

Max policy coverage is $500,000 with deductibles ranging from $0-$1000. If a loss or damage occurs, the company can either repair, replace or give cash value of the item. The policy covers your items for up to 30 days in our company storage. After 30 days the policy needs to be renewed monthly at a lesser rate.

In the event of damage, the client has 45 days from delivery date to file a claim directly with our 3rd party insurance provider.

Once FVP is purchased you will receive an insurance certificate. All damages must be noted on delivery. Items over $500 must be listed on a “high value list” before the move begins.

CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE/ WORKERS COMP

If you’re hiring a moving company, verifying their USDOT (for interstate moves) and TXDOT (for local moves) and checking their credentials to ensure they meet all necessary regulatory requirements is good.

YOUR RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHEN YOU MOVE IN TEXAS

CHOOSING A LICENSED MOVER

All household goods motor carriers (movers) operating within Texas are required to have an active certificate of motor carrier registration and abide by the motor carrier rules and regulations under Chapter 218 of title 43, Texas Administrative Code. This includes major van lines, as well as local movers with trucks and trailers. If you are planning to hire a moving company in Texas, we want you to be aware of your rights and responsibilities when choosing a mover. Find more information at www.TxDMV.gov.

Choosing Your Mover

There are many moving companies, so choose your mover carefully. Shop around to find the best prices and services. TxDMV does not regulate fees charged by movers and as a state agency, we will not recommend specific moving companies. However, we do provide a searchable database on our website (www.TxDMV.gov) that you can access to verify whether your mover is properly registered. By contacting the department’s Enforcement Division at 1(888) 368-4689, you can obtain information regarding your mover’s complaint history. You can also contact the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) for additional information regarding your mover.

Proposal for Moving Services

Once you’ve selected your mover, make sure you get everything in writing. Movers are required to provide you with a written proposal prior to loading your items. The proposal may be either a binding proposal (states the exact price of the move) or a not-to-exceed proposal (states the maximum price of the move), and must be signed by both you and the mover.

For movers to give you an accurate estimate, you must be clear about the items you want moved and advise the mover of any special conditions, such as stairs, long carries or elevators that are involved in the move. The proposal should also indicate when payment is due, and what forms of payment are accepted, such as personal checks or credit cards.

Moving Services Contract

Your mover is also required to provide you with a moving services contract prior to loading your items. The agreements on the written proposal provided by your mover also become a part of your contract and can actually be one combined document. The contract should contain all the information about your move including your name, the mover’s name, the origin and destination points and the amount of the mover’s limitation of liability for loss or damage of your property.

Be sure all agreements between you and your mover are written into the moving services contract.

Do not rely on any verbal agreements. READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL DOCUMENTS CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING YOUR NAME.

DURING YOUR MOVE

Mover’s Liability

All licensed movers have a standard liability of 60 cents per pound article. For example, if a 50–pound television is damaged as a result of a move, the mover is only required to reimburse you $30 (50 lbs. X 0.60 = $30). Some movers will assume a higher level of liability, however, it must be agreed upon by both parties and additional fees may be assessed by the mover. Keep in mind that the mover’s limits are not the same as insurance. You, as the shipper, can obtain additional insurance to protect your items.

Insurance

Some movers may offer to sell you transit insurance, which helps cover loss or damage to your goods, or you can purchase this type of policy from a separate insurance company. Your mover is required to provide you with a copy of the policy and any other appropriate evidence of insurance purchased. Transit insurance is not regulated by TxDMV or the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), so be sure to carefully read the policy to fully understand your coverage and any deductibles.

Inventory of Goods Being Moved

Some movers may offer to prepare a descriptive inventory of your items for an additional cost. If an inventory is prepared, it should list all items to be moved and their condition. It should also be signed by both you and the mover prior to and after the move. As with any shipping document, you should review it for accuracy before signing.

Important: Inventories are often used during the claims process; inspect your shipment carefully. Make sure all items are accounted for. If there is obvious loss or damage, note this on the inventory at the time of delivery.

Pickup and Delivery Dates

Advise your mover of any deadlines that you might have with regards to pickup and delivery dates and times Note these deadlines either on your written proposal or moving services contract. If you are not available at the agreed upon times, contact your mover immediately. If you alter the pickup and/or delivery dates or times you may be charged additional fees.

Delivery

Your mover must provide you with a completed copy of the moving services contract signed by both you and the mover upon delivery of your shipment. Check the condition of your property and make any damage notations on the contract document before signing.

Paying the Moving Company

Remember that the last amended contract or written proposal lists the total price that you will be required to pay at the time of delivery. You should be prepared to pay the maximum amount shown on the written proposal provided by the mover.

IN CASE OF A PROBLEM

Claims

If you have any disputes about charges, loss or damage to your items, you need to file a written claim with the mover within 90 days of the delivery date and must include enough information for the mover to investigate your claim along with any specific monetary amounts requested or other solutions you are seeking. Your mover has 20 days to respond acknowledging your claim and has 90 days to pay, deny or make a settlement offer. If your claim involves damaged goods, you should preserve the containers and the damaged goods. The mover has the right to inspect any containers or damaged goods within 30 days of receiving your claim.

Important: If your mover does not receive the claim within 90 days of delivery, your claim can be denied.
