ABOUT ME Hello! My name is Eleanor Aloisi and I am a fourth year undergraduate architecture student. I enjoy free hand drawing, painting, building physical and digital models, and working out design problems with creative solutions.

EXPERIENCE Hardin County Performing Arts Center | 2014-2016 During my time at Hardin County Performing Arts Center, I worked several theater-oriented jobs, such as lighting operator and stagehand. I also learned scenic design concepts I later applied to my own work.

UTSA Honors College Sustenance and Sustainability Expo | 2018 For the Honors College S&S Expo, I helped plan and raise funds, design the shirt given out to all who attended the event, and invite several vendors in architecture-related professions. I also displayed some of my own work, assisted by Professor David Matiella of the UTSA College of Architecture.

UTSA Extended Education & Downtown Special Events | 2017-2019 While working with Downtown Special Events, I refurbished an older theater with my boss, Jerod Jerry, and learned to use the technical equipment, as well as worked as a stage manager and lighting operator at several events.

UTSA Office of the Facilities | 2020-Present At the Office of Facilities, I work under Mr. Benjamin Perry, the University Architect. Throughout this internship, I worked to create a CAD drawing of all the landscape features on campus, as well as design my own for areas that were lacking.

01 The Adaptable Floor Plan Created in Fall 2019, this project was intended to explore the cultural complexities of San Antonio. We worked to define the term “puro,� which loosely means the deeply engrained cultural spirit of the people of San Antonio, which is heaily based in the historical and demographical representation of the city. Including this cultural spirit in our design of a simple residence was vitally important. We studied residential architecture through several parts of the city and defined characteristics many places shared. We also researched the economic makeup of San Antonio, and created clients and budgets to match an average or below-average person living in San Antonio.

Things I chose to reference in my design include the materiality of the exterior and the rooftop, and the mullions in the windows subdividing.

FIVE SCENARIOS

For my client, I chose my own family. I used figures from their finances to pick a plot of land and set a budget, and I plotted their day-to-day schedule to see which spaces would be necessary. In the end, I developed a concept to create a changing floor plan that is rearranged to accomodate the client’s every need. Five scenarios were developed based on the family’s schedule and the need for a certain combination of spaces at a specific time.

02 Modularity Modularity is an apartment tower on the Riverwalk in San Antonio with a cafe on the second floor and a restaurant on the river level. I devised the formation of the tower based on the modular construction of the individual units out of structural concrete. Each wall edge is treated with a diagonal slope to create the honeycomb-like appearance of the facade, which changes depending on the perspective. There is also a garden to the side of the tower.

03 Study Abroad in Urbino, Italy During my study abroad trip to Italy in Spring 2020, I visited several cities and practiced my photography and freehand sketching, examples of which I have included in this section. We also did a studio project based on the worldwide pandemic that developed while we visited Italy and the events that followed. Our prompt was to design a memorial for Italian victims of coronavirus, to be placed in Urbino, a place of historical and cultural significance in Italy.

REMEMBRANCE - ITALIAN MONUMENT TO CORONAVIRUS VICTIMS With my memorial, I wanted to invoke mourning, provide a respectful tribute to victims, and create an aura of remembrance. To do this, I created a memorial placement for each victim’s name to be recognized, with a light as representation of the soul. This idea is reminicient of a columbarium, which is a room or building with niches for funeral urns to be stored. Italian cemeteries or columbariums are also often park-like places for friends of the deceased to visit. This led me to create a memorial garden with columbariums strategically placed throughout. I also selected a site with Roman ruins, and by shaping the way users view these ruins while approaching them and utilizing the concept of columbariums, I create a place in which the past and present meld together, creating a sense of timelessness within the wall that serves as the memorial.

03 Scenic Design - Into the Woods I designed this set for Into The Woods based on the plotline. The first act of the musical is much like a lighthearted, typical fairytale, and the second act goes to a much darker place, exploring themes of life, love, and loss. I reflected these in the presentation of color in my set, with the green, cheery, stereotypical colors used in the framing piece, and those colors melding together with a striking purple. The scene changes are done with a combination of props brought on and off stage, and projection screens used to set the scenes on each platform.

The use of a projection screen on each platform creates a small, specific area for each place needed throughout the musical.
