Architectural Intern—UTSA Office of the Facilities | 2020-2021 At the Office of Facilities, I worked under Mr. Benjamin Perry, the University Architect. During this internship, I worked to create a CAD drawing of all the landscape features on campus, as well as design my own for areas that were lacking.

UTSA Extended Education & Downtown Special Events | 2017-2019 While working with Downtown Special Events, I refurbished an older theater with my boss, Jerod Jerry, and learned to use the technical equipment, as well as worked as a stage manager and lighting operator at several events.

The Adaptable Floor Plan Created in Fall 2019, this project was intended to explore the cultural complexities of San Antonio. We worked to define the term “puro,” which loosely means the deeply ingrained cultural spirit of the people of San Antonio, which is heavily based in the historical and demographical representation of the city. Including this cultural spirit in our design of a simple residence was vitally important. We studied residential architecture through several parts of the city and defined characteristics many places shared. We also researched the economic makeup of San Antonio, and created clients and budgets to match an average or below-average person living in San Antonio.

FAMILY’S SCHEDULE DIAGRAM

For my client, I chose my own family. I used figures from their finances to pick a plot of land and set a budget, and I plotted their day-to-day schedule to see which spaces would be necessary.

In the end, I developed a concept to create a changing floor plan that is rearranged to accomodate the client’s every need. Five scenarios were developed based on the family’s schedule and the need for a certain combination of spaces at a specific time.

FIVE SCENARIOS

SAN ANTONIO “PURO” CHARACTERISTICS

These five scenarios were developed by the need for specific spaces at each certain time. Each family member had 200 square feet dedicated to them, and each 20 square foot box has a certain roof slope, which makes different roof combinations when moved around.

Things I chose to reference in my design include the materiality of the exterior and the rooftop as well as the subdividing qualities of the mullions in the windows. I also considered ornamental additions that were prevalent in most puro houses in San Antonio.

Alamo Gardens

02 Alamo Condos and Mercado

Concept Sketch

Located in the Downtown San Antonio area in sight of the Alamo Plaza, this building sits on two different sites crossed by an intersection. The programming is condos and a mercado with both permanent eatery establishments and temporary market stalls. The concept for this project is the shape of the gardens in the Alamo Plaza as well as to include public space and greenery into the building, which is accomplished with extensive gardens and landscaping, as well as the roof of the mercado acting as a public space up to the middle level of the residential building. The mid level of the residential building includes public amenities and a cafe.

03 Study Abroad in Urbino, Italy During my study abroad trip to Italy in Spring 2020, I visited several cities and practiced freehand sketching, examples of which I have included in this section. We also did a studio project based on the worldwide pandemic that developed while we visited Italy and the events that followed. Our prompt was to design a memorial for Italian victims of coronavirus, to be placed in Urbino, a place of historical and cultural significance in Italy.

With my memorial, I wanted to invoke mourning, provide a respectful tribute to victims, and create an aura of remembrance. To do this, I created a memorial placement for each victim’s name to be recognized, with a light as representation of the soul. This idea is reminiscent of a columbarium, which is a room or building with niches for funeral urns to be stored. Italian cemeteries or columbariums are also often park-like places for friends of the deceased to visit. This led me to create a memorial garden with one large columbarium as the central focus. I also selected a site with Roman ruins, and by shaping the way users view these ruins while approaching them and utilizing the concept of columbariums, I create a place in which the past and present meld together, creating a sense of timelessness within the wall that serves as the memorial.

04 Modularity Modularity is an apartment tower on the Riverwalk in San Antonio with a cafe on the second floor and a restaurant on the river level. I devised the formation of the tower based on the modular construction of the individual units out of structural concrete. Each wall edge is treated with a diagonal slope to create the honeycomb-like appearance of the facade, which changes depending on the perspective. There is also a garden to the side of the tower.

Scenic Design - Into the Woods

02. Into The Woods - Intro Scene, 2021

01. Into The Woods - Physical Model, 2017 I first designed this set for Into The Woods in 2017, which can be seen in the physical model representation above, then revisited the design in the spring of 2021, utilizing both traditional and digital skills I acquired since then. In readdressing this design, I looked at the looked the logistical side of things, like transportation, modularity useful for various stage sizes, etc.

I storyboarded every scene to create a flow of movement through each platform to the backstage.

In recreating the backdrop and side pieces, I envisioned a light board used to light up abstract cut outs of trees in the foreground, and the side pieces were still watercolor painted, but this time inserted into a digital model to stimulate different lighting cues possible for various scenes in the musical. I also utilized projection screens, a concept I began with in the 2017 version, as well as color theory to symbolize the bright beginnings of the musical and the dark overtones near the end.

I started designing T-shirts by sketching the designs in my sketchbook, and editing the background in photoshop. I designed most of these for fun, but I have designed for specific organizations, such as the UTSA Honors College, and the UTSA Marching Band.

In addition to frogs, I also drew raccoons. The last design, band frogs, I designed for the UTSA Marching Band.
