Bueno, ¿Qué puedo decir?, justo cuando pensábamos decir adiós al invierno, otra vez la lluvia torrencial causa confusión en la zona.

Cuando estoy aquí sentado en Sabinillas en la oficina escribiendo esta editorial se produce un colapso de tráfico debido a la inundación del puente de la A7. No tengo dudas que estos problemas se repiten en otras zonas y que el pronóstico del tiempo nos dice que habrá más lluvias en los próximos días. Pero pienso en aquellas personas que viajen a o desde Reino Unido, cuyos vuelos han sido cancelados debidos a la erupción del volcán en Islandia. Ahora, ¿Qué os dije el mes pasado cuando escribí que el mundo nos estaba poniendo a prueba?

Para no preocuparnos este fin de semana, se celebra el Día de los extranjeros en Estepona en el Palacio de Congresos de la ciudad.

Este festival con tanto colorido permite a la gran diversidad de la comunidad extranjera enseñar su cultura, tradiciones, música y cocina y siempre tiene una gran acogida por parte de visitantes. Un programa de eventos incluye actuaciones por parte de Reino Unido, Argentina, Colombia, España, etc. Y habrá mucha comida y bebida al alcance de todos, así que desayunar poco. Este es el día perfecto para salir en un Domingo lluvioso y como es habitual The Resident estará en el stand de Prensa, así pues ¿Por qué no visitarnos y saludarnos?

El mes próximo también tendremos la Feria de San Isidro Labrador en Estepona, en la cual la ciudad celebra el día de su Santo Patrón con un programa de actividades y eventos junto con la romería y procesión. Y hablando de romerías, San Roque también celebra el día de su Patrón con una romería a finales de este mes, más información en la edición de este mes.

A un poquito más lejos y el próximo mes, la ciudad de Cordoba abre sus puertas, jardines, terrazas y parques para visitantes con sus famosos Patios. Esta histórica ciudad se hace famosa en estas fechas por su derroche de color, en donde todos sus habitantes engalanan sus patios. El Departamento de Extranjeros de Manilva está organizando un viaje, VivAndalucía da información de todo ello en nuestra última página.

Con las anunciadas Elecciones Generales en Reino Unido, merece la pena mencionar que dentro de 12 meses España celebrará elecciones locales, en las cuales los residentes de la Unión Europea tendrán derecho al voto. Con esto en mente para los meses siguientes, publicaremos información de utilidad con referencia al proceso de las elecciones y quién es quién políticamente.

Bueno, eso es todo por este mes, ¡Voy en busca de mis botas de agua otra vez!

Well what can I say, just when we thought we’d said goodbye to winter, a particularly wet one at that, once again torrential rain causes havoc throughout the region.

As I sit here penning this editorial Sabinillas is in gridlock due the A7 underpass being shut due to floodwater. I’ve no doubt that these problems are repeated in other areas, and the forecast is for more rain over the coming days. But spare a thought for those people travelling to and from the UK whose flights have been cancelled due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Now what did I say last month about the world trying to shrug us off?

Not to worry though because this weekend sees the celebration of Estepona’s Foreign Residents Day at the town’s Palacio de Congresos.

This colourful festival allows Estepona’s diverse foreign community to showcase their culture, traditions, music and cuisine and is always a big hit with visitors. A packed programme of events includes performers from the UK, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, etc. and there will be plenty of food and drink available so have a light breakfast. This is the perfect day out on a rainy Sunday and as usual The Resident will be manning the Press Stand, so why not pop over and say hello. For more information and the full programme see page 14.

Next month also sees Estepona’s Feria de San Isidro Labrador in which the town celebrates its patron saints with a programme of activities and entertainment along with a romeria or pilgrimage, and talking of romerias, San Roque also celebrates its patron with a romeria later this month, details in this month’s issue.

A little further afield and next month the city of Cordoba throws its doors open, well gardens, terraces and parks to be more accurate to visitors of its world famous Patios Festival. This historic city becomes a riot of colour as its green-fingered residents show off the horticultural skills. Manilva Foreign Residents Department is organising a trip, as are VivAndalucia details of which can be found on the inside back cover.

With the announcement of the UK General Election, it is worth mentioning that in just over 12 months Spain will be holding its local elections in which all EU citizens resident in Spain have the right to vote. With this in mind in the coming months we will begin publishing useful information regarding the election process and who’s who politically.

Romería de San Roque 2010 Comenzará el sábado 24 de abril a las 11.00 horas con la oración a San Roque en la Ermita y salida del Santo Patrón en carreta. Minutos más tarde se inaugurará en la zona de Nuevo San Roque la calle “Concejal Pepe Barberán”, para continuar la Romería hacia el Pinar del Rey por las calles: Camino del Almendral, Avenida del Ejército, Ejido Alto, La Cruz, Cayo Antonio Pietro, Camino Viejo de Gaucín y Carretera del Albarracín.

La organización ha pedido que todas las personas que acompañen al Santo Patrón lo hagan ataviadas con traje típico.

A las 14.00 habrá una parada y descanso en al Finca Salomón, donde la Asociación Parroquial Romeros de San Roque invitará a arroz y cerveza

a sus asociados y acompañantes. A las 17.30 se retomará el camino hacia el Pinar del Rey, para finalizar el camino cerca del Aula de la Naturaleza.

En cuanto a la jornada del domingo 25, a las 12.00 se celebrará en el Pinar del Rey una Misa Rociera y habrá bendición de medallas. A las 15.00, la Asociación Amigos del Caballo La Polaina organizará la tradicional carrera de cintas a caballo, frente a la entrada de la zona recreativa.

A las 18.30 horas está previsto el inicio del regreso del Santo Patrón, que saldrá del Pinar atravesando la Finca Salomón, carretera del Albarracín, Camino Viejo de Gaucín y entrada en San Roque hasta la Ermita, yendo acompañado por caballistas y carretas.

La escuela de fútbol Arsenal de San Roque gana el III Trofeo Ibérico por la Paz. La escuela de fútbol Arsenal de San Roque gana el III Trofeo Ibérico por la Paz. La competición de fútbol Internacional organizado por la escuela Arsenal en España ha terminado con una victoria por parte del equipo español. Los cinco equipos participantes demostraron un gran comportamiento fuera y dentro del campo, permitiendo al espectador disfrutar de los tres días de competición.

El torneo este año fue presentado por el municipio de Castellar y a lo largo de estos tres días de competición todos los equipos demostraron un gran nivel futbolístico con goles, estratagemas, trabajo de equipo en conjunto con deportividad y respeto.

Sólo los “gunners” mantuvieron un record insuperado a lo largo de todos los partidos, enfrentándose al equipo Danés Oresund en los partidos finales, donde ambos equipos competían para

conseguir el puesto más alto.

A pesar de que ambos lucharon por conseguirlo duramente e intentaron hacerlo lo mejor que pudieron, sólo un equipo pudo llegar y los dos goles marcados por el equipo Español significaron la victoria convirtiéndoles en ganadores en el torneo de este año.

El entrenador Manuel Angel expresó su satisfacción ya que los chicos “demostraron un gran trabajo de equipo y buenas maneras dentro y fuera del campo, poniendo en práctica la buena manera de trabajar del Arsenal”.

La escuela está ahora deseando que lleguen las actividades de verano con sus campamentos de fútbol en diferentes acontecimientos en la Costa del Sol, Soria y Asturias, al igual que sus dos torneos futbolísticos: la Copa Duero que se llevará a cabo en Soria a finales de Julio y el Festival de Fútbol Internacional del Arsenal en Agosto.

San Roque’s Arsenal Soccer School wins III Iberian Peace Trophy

San Roque Romeria San Roque celebrates its Patron Saint with an annual romeria (pilgimage) to the Pinar del Rey woodland behind San Roque.

This year the Romeria is on the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday, 25th April.

The event begins on Saturday afternoon when the procession leaves leaves San Roque for Pinar del Rey, along Camino del Almendral, Avenida del Ejército, Ejido Alto, La Cruz, Cayo Antonio Pietro, Camino Viejo de Gaucín and Carretera del Albarracín.

During the procession the participants will rest at Finca Salomón where there will be rice and beer served. At 5.30 pm the

procession will continue on to the Pinar del Rey. On the Sunday, after a sacred mass at 12 noon, there is usually a number of equestrian events held at the entrance to the Pinar del Rey’s recreation area.

Thousands of people flock to the fiesta in the Pinar del Rey woods to celebrate the town’s patron.

By early evening it is time for the Saint to return in procession by carretera del Albarracín, Camino Viejo de Gaucín and finally La Ermita (chapel).

The international football competition organized by the Arsenal school in Spain has concluded with a great performance from the Spanish team. All five participating teams showed great comportment both on and off the pitch, letting spectators enjoy the 3-day tournament.

The tournament this year was hosted by the municipality of Castellar and throughout the 3 days of competition all the teams put on a great display of football with goals, tricks, team work and overall sportsmanship and respect. Only the gunners maintained an unbeaten record through all the games, and faced the Danish team Oresund in the final games, where both teams were competing for the top spot.

Although both worked hard and tried their

best, only one team could get through and the 2 goals scored by the Spanish team meant victory and thus become the winners of this year’s tournament.

Their coach Manuel Angel expressed his satisfaction as the boys “showed great team work and manners both on and off the pitch, putting into practice the “Arsenal Way” of playing football with an eyecatching performance”.

The school is now looking forward to their summer activities which include football camps in different venues in the Costa del Sol, Soria and Asturias as well as their two football tournaments, the Duero Cup held in Soria at the end of July and Arsenal’s International Football Festival in August.

Casares Costa contará con un club de playa La Costa de Casares contará con un club de playas. La mesa de contratación del Ayuntamiento de Casares se ha reunido la semana pasdad para adjudicar la construcción y explotación de las nuevas instalaciones.

El nuevo club de playa irá ubicado en una parcela municipal, de 6.042 m2, situada junto a la Playa Piedra Paloma, en el sector UR-C3 que será adjudicado conforme a las bases publicadas en el Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de Málaga del pasado 18 de febrero.

Tan solo ha presentado oferta una empresa para esta concesión administrativa dirigida especialmente a instalaciones hoteleras del interior del municipio, ha explicado el concejal de Costa Juan Jesús Rodríguez. Se trata de Single Home S.A., propietaria del complejo turístico Finca Cortesin, que en principio parece cumplir con los requisitos de solvencia económica, financiera, técnica y profesional, solicitados por el Ayuntamiento al contratista.

Ahora los técnicos municipales deberán

revisar la oferta para que la concesión se haga definitiva, ha informado el concejal de Casares Costa, tras lo cual, la empresa concesionaria deberá iniciar los trámites para la construcción de este equipamiento de playas que podrá explotar por un periodo de 40 años.

El canon anual de explotación es de 70.000 euros más el incremento del IPC. Además, explica el concejal de Costa las nuevas instalaciones compuestas de piscina, restaurante y club de playa supondrán ampliar los servicios que se ofrecen a los turistas que pasan sus vacaciones en Casares, además de la creación de nuevos puestos de trabajo en el municipio.

La mesa de contratación ha estado presidida por la alcaldesa de Casares y compuesta por los concejales de Urbanismo, Pedro González, de Playas, Juan Jesús Rodríguez, y el edil del PP, Javier Quero, además de técnicos de los departamentos jurídicos y de infraestructura del Ayuntamiento de Casares.

Amigos y residentes de Marina de Casares Habiendo sufrido recientemente el mal tiempo la asociación de residentes y amigos de Marina de Casares fueron bendecidos con el buen tiempo cuando se llevó a cabo el torneo de golf en el campo de golf Casares Gardens.

El ganador, Brian, se presentó con la “Copa Pérgola” en la celebración después de la cena del torneo, la cual tuvo lugar en el restaurante La Pérgola en el Puerto de la Duquesa. Dieciséis jugadores, más esposas e invitados disfrutaron de dicha cena. A los jugadores se les entregaron premios, los cuales la mayoría fueron donados por Brian.

Parece que todo Casares fue al rastrillo

que tuvo lugar en el club de la Asociación, donde socios y amigos fueron capaces de vender sus “pequeños tesoros sobrantes” y requeridos para otros.

El próximo bingo familiar se llevará a cabo el sábado 17 de abril a las 5 de la tarde, se ofrecerá té con pastas gratis a todos los participantes.

La próxima excursión organizada por la asociación será a Jerez el 5 de Mayo, con la visita a la exhibición de caballos y el famoso museo del reloj, pararemos para almorzar. El coste de la excursión será para los no socios de 42 euros.

Friends and Residents of Marina Casares

New beach club for Casares costa Casares council’s Tendering Committee met recently to approve the granting of a concession for the construction and operation of a beach club adjacent to the Playa Piedra Paloma beach, close to the Salt Tower.

There was only one bid submitted for this concession, which was from Single Home SA, owners of the Finca Cortesin Resort, which was accepted by the committee subject to approval from the municipal

technical department. Once approved construction should start immediately.

The concession has a 40 year term at a cost of 70,000 euros per annum payable to the Casares Town Hall.

The facilities should include a swimming pool, restaurant and beach club which will provide improved facilities to visitors to the area, as well as creating new jobs in the municipality.

Having suffered the recent bad weather the Residents and Friends of Marina Casares Association were blessed with warm sunshine when they held their Golf Tournament at Casares Gardens Golf course.

The winner Brian was presented with the ‘Pergola Cup’ at the celebratory a er tournament dinner which was held at La Pergola Restaurant in Duquesa Port. Some 16 players, plus wives and guests enjoyed the dinner at which the a ending players were awarded prizes most of which were generously donated by Brian.

It seemed that the whole of Casares turned out for the ‘Table Top’ sale held

at the association’s club room where the members and friends were able to sell their li le treasures that were surplus to requirement.

The next family bingo evening is on Saturday, 17th April at 5 pm and tea and biscuits will be served free of charge to the participants.

The next coach trip organised by the association will be to Jerez on the 5th May, visiting the Andalucia Horse Show and the famous Clock Museum, and stopping for lunch. The cost of the trip to non-members is 42 euros.

Reuniones los miercoles La Mancomunidad se abre a los residentes comunitarios Las Delegaciones de Extranjeros Residentes y Participacion Ciudadana, dirigidas por el Concejal Diego Urieta, quieren informar que todos los Miercoles de cada semana, desde las 12.00 hasta las 14.00, mantendremos reuniones con todas aquellas personas, representantes de comunidades, asociaciones, etc., que quieran transmitir sus sugerencias, peticiones, quejas o que simplemente quieran transmitirnos sus opiniones.

Estas reuniones deberan ser concertadas con las delegaciones en cuestion de antemano, podran hacerlo mediante correo electronico: extranjeros@ ayto-manilva.com o bien en el telefono: 952 893 548, se les asignara una cita segun la agenda.

Con esta iniciativa pretendemos incrementar el servicio a todos los ciudadanos del municipio, sin importar cual sea su nacionalidad, raza, cultura o religion, nuestro objetivo es conocer de primera mano a todas las personas que tienen la necesidad de transmitir sus inquietudes.

Juan Sánchez, presidente de la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, acompañado por Antonia Muñoz, delegada de Residentes Extranjeros, ha presentado la Primera reunión con extranjeros residentes.

En palabras de Juan Sánchez, se trata de “una nueva línea de trabajo abierta a la importancia de los colectivos de los ciudadanos comunitarios en la comarca”, que trata de convertir la Mancomunidad “en un instrumento útil para ellos, a fin de conseguir una integración real”.

En ese sentido, el presidente de la Mancomunidad señaló que se ha realizado a los representantes de los veintidós colectivos que asistieron a la reunión, una serie de propuestas entre las cuales destaca la incorporación “al Consejo Económico y Social, un órgano consultivo y de participación que tiene una enorme importancia”. También avanzó Juan Sánchez que se solicitará al Parlamento Europeo que, de forma periódica, visite la comarca algún parlamentario a fin de realizar encuentros con ellos

para estos colectivos.

Por su parte, Antonia Muñoz incidió en la importancia de la campaña de empadronamiento que viene realizando su Delegación, a fin de que, por una parte, “los residentes extranjeros puedan acceder a los beneficios que supone estar empadronado, y por otra, ayudar a los ayuntamientos a tener un cómputo real de su número de habitantes y optar así a los ingresos del Estado. Sabemos que el sesenta por ciento de los residentes extranjeros son mayores de 60 años, personas que cada vez necesitan más ayuda, y sólo con el empadronamiento podremos ayudarles”.

Asimismo, destacó el proyecto denominado “Conoce tu comarca”, a través del cual los residentes extranjeros podrán girar visitas guiadas a los municipios del ámbito mancomunado y conocer mejor el entorno, “lo que sin duda facilita enormemente la integración”, señaló Antonia Muñoz.

Calendario actividades de primavera - Delegación de Extranjeros Residentes Ampliacion de atencion al publico La Delegacion de residentes Extranjeros de Manilva, les informa que hemos ampliado los horarios de atencion al publico. Desde primeros de Abril tambien atendemos en la oficina de turismo del Puerto de la Duquesa: De Lunes a Viernes desde las 15.00 hasta las 20.30. Sabados desde las 10.00 hasta las 14.00 En el Castillo, la oficina permanecera abierta como siempre de 08.00 a 15.00, de Lunes a Viernes.

Viaje a tanger El pasado 19 de Marzo, la Delegacion de Extranjeros Residentes, realizo el viaje que tenian programado a Tanger.

Con una gran participacion de personas de diferentes nacionalidades; Suecos, Noruegos, Ingleses, Belgas, Ucranianos y españoles, de nuestro municipio, por un dia disfrutaron de la cultura, costumbres y gastronomia de una tierra llena de lugares y paisajes con un encanto especial.

La excursion fue muy diversa, con las visitas a las Cuevas de Hercules, segun la leyenda aqui es donde la mitica figura de Hercules descanso despues de realizar sus 12 tareas. Estas son, segun cuenta la historia, parcialmente articiales y en parte naturales.

La vieja Medina, con sus calles estrechas y sus gentes, parece que el tiempo se haya detenido.

Los participantes de este gran viaje disfrutaron de una deliciosa comida tipica de la tierra, amenizada por un grupo musical marroqui.

Wednesday meetings

The ‘Mancomunidad’ is open to all residents

The Foreign Residents and the Citizen Participation departments, directed by councillor Diego Urieta have announced that each week on Wednesdays, between 12 noon and 2 pm time has been set aside during which representatives of local communities, associations, etc., can meet with council officers to discuss problems, suggestions, complaints, etc.

These meetings must be scheduled in advance with the relevant department and can be done so by phoning 952 893 546 or by email extranjeros@ayto-manilva.com.

This is part of the government drive to improve its services to all sections of the local community, regardless of nationality.

Last month Juan Sanchez, president of the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol (Mancomunidad), accompanied by Antonia Muñoz, delegate for foreign residents, held a meeting with representatives of some twenty-two groups and associations representing the Costa del Sol’s foreign community.

The aim of the meeting was to acknowledge the importance of this section of the community and to put the resources of the Mancomunidad at their disposal with the aim of improving closer integration. A number of proposals were presented including a request to the European Parliament for periodic visits from MEPs to the area to hold meetings with representatives.

campaign being run by her department. She stressed that by registering on the municipal registers (Padron) foreign residents have access to all the benefits available, as well as helping municipalities to have a real census of the number of residents and therefore be eligible for state funding commensurate with those figures. With a large number of foreign residents being over 60 years old and increasingly requiring assistance of some kind, registration will help the local authorities to effectively provide such help.

The project “Know your Region” was also highlighted.

This scheme organises guided tours throughout the area in which foreign residents can learn more about the region and its environment.

Foreign Residents Department - Spring Programme of Events 23rd April - Flamenco Dinner at Meson Reina Come and enjoy an evening of traditional food in a friendly atmosphere with music and dancing to local flamenco performers. Price 20 euros per person includes dinner, a drink, and coffee or dessert. Date and venue to be announced.

Tangier trip The Trip to Tangier, organised last month by the Foreign Residents Department was a great success. The visit was well subscribed with local residents of various nationalities, including Swedes, Norwegians, British, Belgian, Ukranian, Romanian and Spanish enjoying the culture, customs and cuisine of this interesting and exotic country.

During the trip the group visited the Caves of Hercules, where legend has it that Hercules rested after completing his twelve ‘labours’. There then followed a visit to the old Medina, with its narrow streets, where time appears to have stood still. The visit was rounded off with a delicious meal of traditional dishes with entertainment provided by local musicians.

Presentation of Spring programme of events Last Friday, 9th April the II Day of the Tapa was enjoyed by a large number of foreign residents, who sampled the various tapas available at the new El Molino restaurant in

Locals throw open their gardens and terraces to visitors who can enjoy the riot of colours and scents created by the green-fingered residents of the city. There is no itinerary so visitors can go where they wish. Why not visit the Los Jardines de Los reales Alcázares gardens, La Mezquita and the old Jewish Quarter.

Firmada el acta de reinicio de las Sabinillas Sports Complex to be completed by Spring 2011 obras del Complejo Deportivo de Sabinillas Documents were signed today representing schedule and terms. the final act in the resumption of works on the Sabinillas Sports Complex begun in 2005 but mothballed due to funding problems.

In an official ceremony held at Manilva’s Infrastructure and Public Works office in Sabinillas, members of the local council along with representatives of the contracting consortium, and the Mancomunidad’s architect, signed the revised agreement setting out the revised

The total contract is worth 7.7 million euros of which more than 1.2 million has been paid to the contractor.

The Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz, commented that not only would the complex provide top-class sporting facilities for the municipality, but also provide much needed employment.

Works are to resume immediately with a scheduled completion within one year.

Restaurant & Lounge El proyecto del nuevo Complejo Deportivo de Sabinillas va tomando forma para convertirse dentro de 11 meses en una realidad. Ese es el plazo designado a las obras de la aportación pública más importante jamás realizada en el municipio.

Y esa realidad a corto plazo para una obra de tal embargadora ha dado un paso más en la mañana de hoy, ya que la alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez y los ediles de Obras y Deportes, Mario Jiménez y Diego Urieta han firmado con la UTE Vera y Gea y la arquitecta en Mancomunidad, Elena Gallego, el acta de reinicio de las obras de estas infraestructuras deportivas.

Los citados responsables municipales, acompañados por sus homónimos en el Equipo de Gobierno han lanzado un mensaje de optimismo con respecto a los plazos establecidos para poder disfrutar de las instalaciones y el

día de hoy lo han catalogado como uno de los principales en la historia del municipio en cuanto a servicios al ciudadano se refiere.

Cabe recordar que el global de la obra asciende a 7.700.000 euros más iva y que 1.200.000 han sido abonados a la empresa adjudicataria. Por lo tanto, un acuerdo de compromiso por ambas partes, donde el Ayuntamiento buscará recursos económicos para afrontar el resto del pago y la UTE Vera y Gea de finalizar las obras en un año.

En declaraciones de los responsables municipales, han coincidido en afirmar que además de dotar al municipio de Manilva en general y a Sabinillas en particular de unas instalaciones que serán la envidia de la provincia, generará puestos de trabajo, ya que otro compromiso adquirido con la citada empresa es la de contratar a personas del municipio.

Promoción e imagen organiza un concurso de fotografía PRESENTING THIS MONTH’S TOP THREE BEST BUYS La delegación de Promoción e Imagen del Exmo. Ayto. de Manilva, cuya concejala delegada es Noelia López, convoca un concurso de fotografía para premiar las fotografías que mejor reflejen la esencia del término municipal de Manilva.

La participación en el presente concurso presupone la aceptación íntegra de todas las cláusulas contenidas en las bases y en particular la autorización, por parte del autor, para publicarlas en la página web de turismo, página web del Ayto. de Manilva y en actuaciones promocionales que la delegación de Turismo realizará, así como la cesión de derechos establecida en la Base 6.

Entrarán en concurso las fotografías recibidas entre el 30 de marzo 2010 hasta el 31 de mayo 2010 ambos inclusive, la delegación de Promoción e Imagen se reserva el derecho a suspender, aplazar o cancelar el concurso, en cualquier momento anterior a su finalización, siempre que existan causas que así lo justifiquen, asimismo podrá ampliar y reducir el

Prohibido llevar animales de compañía a las playas La delegación de Playas del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, cuya concejala delegada es Noelia López, está colocando la cartelería que, basada en las ordenanzas municipales, prohíbe los animales de compañía en todo el litoral.

Para ello, cada una de las playas contará con esta advertencia, que será controlada por la Policía Local

y que podrá tener una multas que oscilarán entre 50 y 300 euros.

Como ha afirmado la citada edil: “tenemos que asegurar la tranquilidad e higiene de los bañistas cuando acudan a las playas, y según recoge Costas en sus ordenanzas, los animales no pueden estar en estos lugares”, finalizó.

The Provincial Tax Collection Agency, Patronato de Recaudación de la Diputación Provincial de Málaga, has announced that the payment period for motor vehicle tax (IVTM) is now open and payments can be made up until 20th May after which there will be charges levied on late payments.

You should have received notice of payment, with which you can pay the due amount at any of

the banks listed. If you have not received the payment notice then you should go to your local Patronato office, which in Manilva is next to the Local Police Station on Calle Doctor Alvarez Leiva.

Encuentro de autocaravanas En reunión mantenida en la delegación de Turismo ubicada en el Puerto de la Duquesa, los concejales de Juventud y Deportes, Diego Urieta, Comercio, Gabriel Recio y Turismo, Noelia López, han perfilado el programa de actividades que se llevará a cabo con motivo del primer encuentro de autocaravanas “Villa de Manilva”, organizado por estas tres áreas.

Cabe recordar que el edil de Juventud y Deportes Diego Urieta, se reunió hace unas semanas con el presidente de la asociación Andaluza de Auto caravanistas (Asandac), Antonio Clavijo Vargas, y el representante de esta asociación en Manilva, Jorge del Águila Torres.

En aquel encuentro se puso fecha a esta concentración. De esta manera, se celebrará en Manilva en el recinto ferial los días 23, 24 y 25 de abril.

Con motivo de esta concentración de autocaravanas, en la que esta previsto que participen unos 300 vehiculos de estas caracteristicas, se llevarán a cabo diversas actividades de ocio.

Los participantes podrán asistir además a una conferencia sobre Manilva en la que conocerán más a fondo nuestra historia y todo lo relacionado con nuestro municipio.

Se celebrará también una jornada de senderismo en la que se visitarán rincones emblematicos de esta zona.

El Ateneo Organiza el Festival de Cine Manilva Fantastika El Ateneo José Román, de Algeciras, será el encargado de organizar entre los próximos días 20 y 23 de mayo el Festival de Cine Manilva Fantástika, que tendrá como escenario el Castillo de la Duquesa, según el concejal de cultura, Diego José Jiménez.

El presidente del Ateneo, Juan Emilio Ríos Vera, confirmó que, efectivamente, ya está firmado el convenio con el Ayuntamiento de Manilva y cerrado el extenso programa de actos de un festival que rendirá un cálido homenaje a dos grandes del cine ya fallecidos: el director Carlos Aured y el actor Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina), como confirmó el edil de cultura, Diego José Jiménez.

El Festival que organiza el Ateneo de Algeciras con entrada gratuita- dará comienzo el jueves 20 de mayo con el acto inaugural a cargo de las autoridades y la apertura de una exposición pictórica del algecireño Víctor Jerez, que ha centrado su muestra en el cine.

Seguidamente se proyectará una selección de cortometrajes de cine fantástico realizada Ángel Gómez Hernández.

El día concluirá con dos «platos fuertes»: el primero, la proyección de \’El espanto surge de la tumba\’, dirigida por Carlos Daudet y protagonizada por Paul Naschy.

Seguidamente y como cierre de la jornada, se presentará el \’trailer\’ de la última película que dirigieron Daudet y

Naschy: \’Empusa\’. Se da la circunstancia que Carlos Aured comenzó a dirigir la película, pero falleció a mitad del rodaje. Lo remató Naschy, que logró terminarla, y después falleció. La película aún no ha sido estrenada.

Está previsto que asistan la viuda de Paul Naschy, Elvira Primavera, y su hijo, Sergio Molina.

El viernes, se realizarán dos proyecciones de terror en horario de tarde: \’La novia de Frankestein\’ y \’El exorcista.

El domingo se rendirá homenaje a Eugenio Martín, director de \’Pánico en el Transiberiano\’ a quien se le otorgará el primer premio \’Paul Naschy\’.

Posteriormente se cerrará el festival con la presentación del libro de Ángel Gómez y Juan Emilio Ríos Vera \’La mirada dual\’, un trabajo que mezcla textos poéticos y narrativa, centrados en el terror y la fantasía.

PA+PSA Manilva cierra la candidatura en Manilva

El pasado viernes 19 de Marzo, el Comité Local del PA+PSA Manilva, reunió a sus Afiliados, Simpatizantes y Amigos para la celebración de una Asamblea Extraordinaria en la sede del PA+PSA de Manilva, sita en Calle Cruces n 64, local bajo. En dicha Junta se llevó a cabo la votación, puramente democrática, del cierre de Candidatura para los próximos Comicios Electorales, los cuales, tendrán lugar en Mayo 2011.

En tiempo y forma establecidos y por unanimidad, se aprobó el Acta en la que quedó

nombrada Doña Lidia Maldonado Yuste, Candidata a la Alcaldía de Manilva.

Actualmente también ostenta el cargo de Secretaria Local y máxima representante de Los Andalucistas en nuestro Municipio. En un plazo no superior a 60 días, bajo el consentimiento y aprobación de la Comisión de Enlace de Málaga, cuyo mayor representante es el Secretario del Provincial Sr. Salvador López, y de la Comisión de Enlace Nacional PA+PSA “Los Andalucistas”, cuya Secretaria General es Doña Pilar González Modino, se celebrará el cierre definitivo de la Candidatura en Manilva.

Manilva Festival of Horror and Fantasy Cinema Next month Manilva’s Castillo de la Duquesa will be the venue for the I Manilva Festival of Horror and Fantasy Cinema, organised

by Ateneo José Román, de Algeciras cultural association in collaboration with the Manilva Cultural Department.

From the 20th to 23rd May film fans can enjoy a packed programme of events, screenings and tributes.

The association’s president, Juan Emilio Ríos Vera, and Manilva’s Councillor for Culture, Diego José Jiménez, confirmed that the programme had been finalised and subject to minor changes is as follows: On Thursday, 20th May there will be an inauguration ceremony and the opening of an exhibition of paintings on a cinematic theme by Algeciras artist Victor Jerez. This will be followed by a selection of short films by fantasy film director Angel Gómez Hernández.

The day will conclude with a couple of classics from two greats from the world of Spanish horror films, Director Carlos Aured, and Paul ‘The Wolfman’ Naschy both recently deceased. Being screend will be ‘El espanto surge de la tumba’ (Horror Rises From The Tomb) and a trailor for ultimate film ‘Empusa’. Aured died during the filming of this last film, but it was finished by Naschy, who unfortunately also died shortly afterwards, and the film is yet to be released. It is expected that Paul Naschy’s widow Elvira Spring and his son, Sergio Molino will attend.

On Friday there will be two screenings in the afternoon - ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ followed by ‘The Exorcist - The Director’s Cut’.

On Saturday morning the fantasy classics ‘Sinbad and the Princess’ and ‘Dragonwars’ will be shown with the afternoon

given over to science fiction fans with ‘Forbidden Planet’ and Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds’ on the bill.

Saturday continues with the introduction of the magazine DATA by Algeciras resident ‘Garry’, which is devoted to the Manilva Festival of Horror and Fantasy Cinema and the evening will conclude with an award ceremony with the presentation of the ‘Lobisome’ to Angel Gómez Rivero for his contribution to the genre.

Finally on Sunday, 23rd their will be a tribute to Eugene Martin, director of ‘Panic on the TransSiberian’ who will be awarded the top ‘Paul Naschy’ prize.

The evening will be rounded off with the presentation of the book ‘The Dual Eye’, a combination of poetry and narratives focussing on horror and fantasy, authored

by Angel Gomez and Juan Emilio Ríos Vera.

Last month the local committee of the Manilva branch of the PA+PSA held an Extraordinary Assembly at the branch headquarters in Manilva, the purpòse of which was to finalise the candidate list for next year’s May local elections.

The PA+PSA was formed by a union of the Partido Andalucista the Partido Socialista de Andalucia last year.

During the meeting Lidia Maldonado Yuste was named as the party’s candidate for mayor of Manilva. Both the PA and the PSA at provincial level are fully behind the election of Lidia Maldonado, considered the best representative for the party in

Manilva There is a period of no more than 60 days, subject to the approval of PA+PSA Malaga Liaison Committee, represented by Provincial Secretary Sr. Salvador López, and the National Liaison Committee, under Secretary General Doña Pilar González Modino, after which the canditure for Manilva will be closed.

Help Haiti campaign update – The Prayer for Haiti Helping Haiti - HM The Queen acknowledges Costa del Sol ‘Help Haiti Campaign’.

Her Majesty The Queen has sent her best wishes for the continued success of the Costa del Sol’s fundraising efforts for Haiti.

A letter received from Buckingham Palace reads ‘Her Majesty was interested to learn that the British expatriate community in the Costa del Sol have raised over €20,000 for the Haiti Earthquake Fund... Her Majesty conveys warm good wishes to you and all concerned’.- 15th March 2010 ‘I heartily commend the British community in Costa del Sol for making such a positive effort to help raise funds for the Help Haiti Appeal.’ Mr Giles Paxman - HM Ambassador to Spain – 24th March 2010 On Saturday 27th March, Stephen LloydMorgan and Rebecca Tate joined a wealth of Spanish Stars and Celebrities including the world famous soprano Montserrat Caballé and her daughter Marti among many others at ‘The Children for Peace’ Gala at the Hotel Incosol, Marbella.

During the evening Steve and Rebecca sang “The Prayer for Haiti” to rapturous applause from all those present.

Lamia Khashoggi (wife of businessman Adnan Khashoggi who was also in attendance) is Vice-President of ‘The Children for Peace’ Charity and alongside President Debbi Mace later thanked and congratulated Steve and Rebecca for their performance.

Fundraising events on the Costa del Sol during February & early March; a celebrity golf tournament, two Gala Dinners and a 12 hour music marathon among others; have now raised a substantial €30,000 for the children of Haiti following the devastating earthquake.

An on-going campaign instigated and spearheaded by Maurice Boland of Talk Radio Europe; 100% of the proceeds have reached Haiti in record time via The Ark Christian Fellowship in Spain direct to The International Child Care Ministries, who have maintained a presence in Haiti for nearly 44 years; currently supporting over 9,000 children in 52 schools.

The money raised so far is not only helping to rebuild many of these schools, but critically will provide urgent and essential shelter before the four month Atlantic Hurricane season begins in late May. During a radio interview in March, Pastor Varnel Jeune , Director General of Radio Lumière Haiti, told Maurice Boland that he believed the actual death toll following the earthquake far exceeded UN official figures, and was ‘at least 500,000, but could be as many as a million’. He feared the death toll would continue to rise dramatically if shelters

were not provided. Haiti ever vulnerable to hurricane damage left 800,000 homeless and many thousands dead in 2008 alone.

This year with so many already homeless, a combination of stagnant groundwater and the freshly buried, sudden flooding could potential result in the spread of deadly diseases nearing epidemic proportions according to officials.

A crucial part of this continuing campaign to raise funds for Haiti, was the recording of a charity single “The Prayer for Haiti” in February. Co-produced by celebrated tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, his manager Nick Holland and Maurice Boland in association with Essential Marbella Magazine; the song, a cover version of the Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli’s highly emotional ballad, ‘The Prayer’, features acclaimed professionals as well as talented newcomers and combines a powerful eclectic mix of singing styles. The line-up includes ITV’s X Factor finalist Rowetta, tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, WoW Factor runner-up Rebecca Tate, Mayte, Daniel Boland, The Unity Gospel Singers and the popular classical group Tres Divos.

Recorded with just 4 days notice and without any funding whatsoever; dependant entirely on the selfless generosity of so many and the time and resources they were freely willing to provide, this single stands as the first recorded and released ‘classical cover’ song for charity!

As well as in Spain and the UK, the single was recently released throughout North America, Canada and 19 other countries worldwide.

It is hoped an equally significant amount is raised from the sale of this charity single which can be downloaded from the internet music store iTunes.

Also commending the Help Haiti Campaign, Marbella Tourist Minister Jose Luis Hernández wrote ‘the expat community is giving us an example of generosity and commitment in view of the magnitude of the devastation suffered by Haiti...even in these moments of economic crisis...our society, and particularly our expat community, is giving such an evident proof of commitment with the suffering of human beings that did not have anything before the tragedy and, after it, the only thing they have is pain and hopelessness. British Consulate Pension, Benefit and Healthcare Team Bereavement In last month’s issue we provided information on financial support available for those not yet in receipt of their pension. In this edition we focus on the help available for pensioners and those whose spouse or civil partner worked in Spain.

If you are in receipt of a pension and your spouse or civil partner was in receipt of a UK State Pension when they died, rather than receiving the allowances mentioned in last month’s newsletter, you may be eligible for an increase in your own State Pension payments.

If, however, your late spouse or civil partner was not in receipt of a pension, you may also be entitled to a Bereavement Payment of £2000.

Disability living allowance, attendance allowance and carer’s allowance Part of the new eligibility criteria for first-time applicants abroad is that they must have been resident in the UK for 26 out of the previous 52 weeks to their claim.

Recently, however, the government published new information for those who lost their

entitlement to benefit because they moved abroad before the 2007 ECJ ruling. If you have found yourself in this position, the new rules mean that, providing you moved abroad no earlier than 8th March 2001, you will now no longer have to satisfy the residency criterion when applying for reinstatement of benefit.

The Pension, Disability and Carer’s Service will be writing to all those who have already applied for the reinstatement of their benefit with further information. If you have not reapplied, but now wish to do so, you should contact the Exportability Team. Their contact details and more information on the above can be found at www.direct.gov.uk.

Back in October 2007, the European Court of Justice ruled that Disability Living Allowance (care component), Attendance Allowance and Carer’s Allowance may be paid to people who leave the UK to live in another part of the EEA. Pension reform The Pension Reform Act came into effect on 5th April 2010, bringing with it important changes to the rules regarding the UK State Pension. In particular it will introduce changes to the state pension age for women and to the number of years you need to work to get a pension from the UK. If you are already a pensioner, be rest assured your pension entitlements will not be effected by the new rules. However, if you have not yet reached state pension age, find out more about how the changes may affect you at www. direct.gov.uk.

Programa de Senderismo Deportivo “Los caminos de Estepona” Primavera’10 El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que el domingo, 11 de abril, tendrá lugar la proxima ruta de primavera, incluida en el Programa de Senderismo Deportivo “Los Caminos de Estepona”, organizado en colaboración con el “Programa de dinamización de senderos” de la diputación provincial de Málaga (rutas provinciales), y las delegaciones municipales de Deportes y Juventud (rutas locales).

El programa completo de este periodo es el siguiente: • Sábado, 24 de abril: ruta circular Río Velerín-Los Altabacales. Distancia: 19.000

Hiking programme “Estepona Trails” Spring 2010 Estepona’s Sports and Youth department has organised, in collaboration with the provincial authorities, a programme of hikes for the this spring.

You can book a place on any of these hikes anytime up to 8 pm on the Thursday before the specific hike, at the Deportes or Juventud offices in Estepona.

AREME AGM Estepona’s Foreign Residents Association, AREME, will be holding its annual general meeting on Monday, 26th April at 11 for 11.30 am. The meeting will be held in the Salon de Prensa on the first floor of the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre in Estepona.

New members are welcome to attend (enrolment is just one euro) and a reminder goes out to all current members that their annual subscription is now due and must be paid if they wish to vote.

It is important that as many foreign residents as possible join so that

the voice can become a voice in the community for all foreigners.

AREME is a non-political group, with one of its purposes being to help raise money for local charities at the various events it intends to hold during the year.

The first of these events will be a coffee morning at the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre’s cafeteria on Friday, May 21st at 11 am when it is hoped the Councillor for Culture will give a talk and guided tour of the centre.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona y la ONG Emaús firman un convenio de colaboración para la puesta en funcionamiento de un comedor social El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación municipal de Bienestar Social, informa que hoy ha tenido lugar la firma del convenio de colaboración entre el Ayuntamiento y la ONG Emaús, Obra de Amor, para la puesta en funcionamiento del que será el primer Comedor Social de la localidad, cuya inauguración oficial tendrá lugar el próximo lunes, a las 18:00 horas.

El acto ha estado a cargo del alcalde, David Valadez, la concejala de Bienestar Social, Yolanda Franco, y el presidente de Emaús, Antonio Abril, entidad que también se hace cargo, desde hace diez años, de la gestión de los Comedores Sociales de Torremolinos, Baza y Guadix.

El Ayuntamiento ha invertido 18.000 euros en las mejoras necesarias llevadas a cabo para el acondicionamiento de un local de 150 metros cuadrados destinado para tal fin, situado en la zona de Saladavieja, que cuenta con salón comedor, barra para

atención al público, cocina industrial, dos congeladores... y todo lo necesario para la prestación del servicio, y cuyo mobiliario y menage ha sido aportado por Emaús. Además, el Ayuntamiento entregará a la ONG la cantidad de 4.000,00 € mensuales (3.000,00 para gastos de personal y 1.000,00 para la compra de alimentos), y abonará los recibos de agua y luz.

Según ha anunciado el alcalde, este proyecto supone todo un logro añorado desde hace años por todas aquellas entidades sociales que trabajan por una sociedad más justa, igualitaria e integradora. En el ámbito de sus competencias de prestación de servicios sociales, el ayuntamiento, consciente de que la situación actual de crisis económica está provocando un incremento inusual de personas necesitadas, pretende dar respuesta a todas aquellas personas en situación de emergencia y con riesgo de exclusión social que requiera ayuda, así como a personas mayores, todas ellas

derivadas de los Servicios Sociales Comunitarios, dependientes de la delegación de Bienestar Social, en función de su situación económica y personal. En este sentido, el alcalde ha agradecido el impulso dado al proyecto por la edil del área, así como la labor de todos los colectivos sociales que contribuyen a dar respuesta a situaciones de emergencia social.

El presidente de Emaús ha explicado que el servicio de comedor, que estará abierto de 09:30 a 16:00 horas, facilitará a los usuarios desayuno, comida y cena de carácter frugal, estará atendido por tres empleadas fijas para la cocina y personal voluntario, y funcionará de lunes a sábado todos los días del año, excepto los domingos, el 25 de diciembre y el 1 de enero, si bien el sábado se repartirá la comida para el domingo. Además, se realizarán servicios de reparto de comida a domicilio para todas aquellas personas incapacitadas y familias que lo soliciten.

Estepona Town Hall and the Emaús Social Foundation to provide soup kitchen Estepona Town Hall and the NGO Emaús have signed an agreement which will see the town’s first soup kitchen in operation by the middle of April.

The agreement was signed by the Mayor, David Valadez, the Councillor for Social Welfare, Yolanda Franco, and the president of Emaus, Antonio Abril. Emaus have been operating similar ‘social dining centres’ for the past ten years in Torremolinos, Baza and Guadix.

The Town Hall has invested some 18,000 euros in the necessary alterations to the 150 square metre premises which

will house the soup kitchen in the Saladavieja area of the town.

The centre will be equipped by Emaus with the town centre providing 4,000 euros a month for employees, food purchases and pay the electricity and water bills.

According the mayor this project is something that has been needed for years, and the timing is perfect with the current economic crisis creating an even higher demand for this service.

According to the mayor announced, this project is an achievement for years longed

for by all the social organizations working for a more just, equitable and inclusive. In the scope of its mandate to provide social services, town hall, aware that the current economic crisis is causing an increased need.

The soup kitchen, which will be open from 9.30 am to 4 pm will provide users with a breakfast, lunch and dinner of a frugal nature and will operate from Monday to Saturday all year round, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. In addition there will be a delivery service at home for people with disabilities and families by request.

Carta abierta a mi Hermano Mi querido Miguel: Tras un invierno de desastres y calamidades ajenas, estábamos esperando la ansiada primavera para disfrutar de la naturaleza, que tanto nos gustaba vivirla, sobre todo a ti, que venías a vernos y pasar con nosotros todos los fines de semana para disfrutar de tus baños romanos, de montar en bicicleta, de tus paseos y baños en la playa del Castillo con mis niños, que también eran los tuyos, ya que los parimos los dos a la vez, y sobre todo, de hacernos reír con tus cosas. ¡Qué lástima que ya no podamos disfrutar juntos y poder contarte mí día a día y desahogarme contigo, como algunas veces hacía!

No eras hombre de dar consejos y consuelo pero a veces los silencios son más elocuentes que las palabras. ¡Qué injusta y cruel es la muerte que tiene nuestra vida cogida por cualquier extremo, no le importa si es al principio, al final o en cualquier otro punto, y además sin avisar y de un hachazo!

Daniel promises to return before the first game of the Brazilian National Soccer Team in the Cup. The boy is left in Bom Retiro, a Jewish and Italian neighborhood, and waits for Mótel in front of his apartment. Estepona Floral Art Club

DFAS de la Frontera, part of the NADFAS association of decorative and fine arts societies, is now in its fourth season and going from strength to strength with a record number of members joining this season.

Lectures are held at the San Roque Golf and Country Club between October and May and this March was a particularly busy month with the culmination of their inaugural Young Arts Project which incorporated a film making competition for students of Sotogrande International School.

Members voted on the best three minute short film on the subject of ‘It’s a Wonderful

World’ and the €500 prize was presented by actor Gerald Harper, best remembered for his television roles as Adam Adamant and Hadleigh.

All the eight finalists produced entries of a very high standard but the prize was awarded to talented filmmakers Jessica Hodgson and Lia Newman. NADFAS encourages societies to become involved in the Young Arts Project giving children and teenagers the opportunity to expand their horizons through their involvement in creative arts activities, and de la Frontera look forward to playing a part in future projects with young people from Andalucía.

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva Foreign Residents Day Foreign Residents Day enables local associations and organisations to show local people what they are all about. Age Concern is no exception and will be present at the Palacio de Congresos, Estepona on Sunday April 18th running two stands. One will be selling teas, coffees, and produce of all kinds. The other will be running a tombola and also selling items of all kinds, including clothes. To make the event a huge success they need your support – both in making produce to sell, running the stall, or simply coming along to support their worthwhile cause. They need cakes, biscuits, quiches (always a great favourite), pies, sausage roll, anything edible! Sponsored Walk Shortly after the Foreign Residents Day, Age Concern is holding a sponsored walk.

This will be taking place on Sunday May 2nd. There will be two walk options – an easy river and country walk of about 4 kilometres, and a mountain track walk to the ruins of the Castle of Nicola which will take about 4.5 hours return. Both walks will start at Laguna Beach, Estepona – the harder walk starts at 10.00, the easier one at 11.30.

All walkers will receive a reflective jacket and water, and plenty of marshals will be on hand to guide people on their way. As well as the walk a photographic competition will be held (snaps of the walk), you can buy lunch at Chiringuito Crusoe or simply bring a picnic to eat on the beach, and throughout the afternoon there will be music, fun, and games!

This month, Tuesday, May 18th, the club is very pleased to welcome Susan Philips, NAFAS National Demonstrator, London & Overseas Area, from Orpington, Kent.

This will be a very interesting programme she will be demonstrating some very different styles of flower arranging and use of colour.

The demonstration will be from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm at The Benavista Country Club, Benavista, N340 (Km167). Please arrive in plenty of time so as not to miss this exciting afternoon’s programme.

There will also be some well stocked Sales Table for you to browse through and make your purchases for items for flower arranging.

On Friday, May 28th, the club is delighted to welcome ‘Bonham’s Auctioneers’ who are to visit the club, to give a short talk followed by valuations. This event will begin at 11.00 am, at The Benavista Country Club, so bring along your antiques or items that you would like valued, and maybe you just might have something in your cupboards that is worth a fortune!

If anyone wishes to stay on at the Club for lunch they are most welcome.

An entrance fee of €2.50 for members and €3 for visitors will be charged to include a cup of coffee. Please put this date in your diaries, it should prove to be a very interesting morning and hopefully profitable for those with items for valuation.

The Summer Event this year will be held on Wednesday, June 16th at The Benavista Country Club.

This is going to be “A Day at Ascot Races” Ladies you will have the opportunity of dressing accordingly for this event and it is hoped to see some wonderful hats!

The day will consist of a drink on arrival, followed by a 3-Course Lunch, to include wine, water, or soft drink, bread roll and butter, with coffee to finish.

There will also be a ‘Floral Display’ which will be raffled at the end of the meal.

‘Nothing to declare but my genius’ – Oscar Wilde and the Aesthetic Movement The final lecture of the DFAS de la Frontera season highlights Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) who was, like several of the previous lecture subjects, a controversial figure who continues to influence modern perceptions of art and design in the Saatchi era. Wilde encouraged everyone to see themselves as artists, in the home or in the way they dressed, if not on paper.

He helped raise shopping at Liberty’s and Morris and Co. into an art form in its own right. ‘Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates life’, he claimed in 1891. Lecturer Dr Anne Anderson is a broadcaster and the author of several books including Art

Go along at 11.00 am on Tuesday 18th May to the San Roque Golf and Country Club (A7, Km.127) to learn more about Oscar Wilde and his effect on the Aesthetic Movement of the time. Vets Corner - El Veterinario Oscar, el gato que huele la muerte Tiene cinco años y sobrepeso, su pelaje combina los colores blanco y pardo, le llaman Óscar y al poco de nacer fue adoptado por un centro geriátrico en el Estado americano de Rhode Island.

Los que le tratan a diario, coinciden en que es un gato nada sociable pero se ha hecho famoso al demostrar una inquietante habilidad para predecir la muerte. Cuando pasa junto a un paciente que el animal considera en la recta final de la vida, entra y se acurruca en la cama.

Si no le dejan entrar en la habitación, el gato araña la puerta con insistencia.

Aunque su presencia lo dice todo. Su historial -bastante infalible en cuanto a olfato luctuoso- abarca el haber acompañado a medio centenar de pacientes durante las últimas horas de sus vidas. Incluso en más de una ocasión ha dejado en evidencia las previsiones del personal médico de “Steere House”, residencia especializada en enfermos que sufren demencia grave.

Aunque ese centro médico situado en la ciudad de Providence alberga otros cinco gatos como mascotas para dar consuelo a sus residentes, ninguno ha demostrado una habilidad similar.

Cuando las enfermeras colocaron en una ocasión a Óscar sobre la cama de un paciente que pensaban próximo a la muerte, el gato se escapó hacia la habitación de otro enfermo que murió aquella misma tarde. Mientras que el primero vivió otros dos días más.

Este peculiar ángel de la muerte viene siendo estudiado con atención por el doctor David Dosa, especialista en geriatría y profesor asistente de Brown University. Hace dos años, el médico ya escribió una historia en el “New

England Journal of Medicine”. Y ahora sus observaciones han sido plasmadas en un libro recién publicado, cuyo título puede traducirse como “Pasar visita con Óscar: el extraordinario don de un gato ordinario”.

«Modus operandi» El médico reconoce que cuando el gato entra en acción, es hora de alertar a la familia del paciente en cuestión sobre un cercano desenlace fatal. El “modus operandi” de Óscar, de acuerdo a las observaciones del doctor Dosa, empezó a partir de los meses de edad y “no es que pase un rato entretenido junto al paciente, es como si literalmente se encontrase celebrando en una vigilia”.

El doctor Dosa no tiene una explicación científica pero su hipótesis es que Óscar tiene una capacidad similar a la de los perros que supuestamente son capaces de olfatear rastros de cáncer en personas. Es decir que el gato es capaz de detectar algún tipo de compuesto orgánico producido cuando las células del cuerpo humano empiezan a morir.

El médico también ha explicado que se quedó con mala conciencia cuando divulgó la habilidad de Óscar en el 2007. Porque el animal se hizo acreedor de una escalofriante fama de “mal fario” que no se merecía.

Según el doctor Dosa, el gato con su presencia ofrece cierta medida de confort y sosiego tanto a los pacientes en agonía como a sus seres queridos.

En su opinión, “no creo que Óscar sea único pero creo que se encuentra en un ambiente único y está claro que los animales son capaces de sentir cosas que nosotros no podemos percibir”.

Oscar - A Cat That Can Predict Imminent Death Oscar is a five year old grey and white overweight Domestic Shorthair Cat that was adopted as a very young kitten by a geriatric center in Rhode Island U.S.A. Those who care for him on a daily basis at the center agree that he is not a very sociable cat but he has become famous by demonstrating the disquieting ability to predict or sense impending death! It has been observed that when passing near a patient that he senses is nearing the end of their life he curls up in the bed.

If he is not allowed into the room he scratches unceasingly at the door. His history, rather infallible, due to his tragic sense of smell, has found him keeping company of well over 50 patients in the final hours of their lives. On more than one occasion Oscar proved wrong the medical staff of Steere House a residence specializing in caring for patients suffering from serious dementia in the area near Providence, Rhode Island. This center is home to five other cats used as pets to console their residents, none of them has ever demonstrated similar behaviour. When the nurses place Oscar on a bed next to a patient thought to be near death, he would escape and go to another resident’s room that died that same day, while the first resident survived another two days!

This cat has been studied by geriatric specialist Dr. David Dosa, also an

assistant professor at Brown University, who wrote about his observations two years ago in the New England Journal of Medicine, which have now been included in a book about Oscar: On Rounds With Oscar, the Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. Dr. Dosa notes that when Oscar enters into action it is time to alert the family of the patient in question. He does not offer a scientific explanation but his hypothesis is that Oscar has a similiar capacity to dogs ability to detect cancer by smelling. That is that Oscar is able to detect some kind of an organic compound produced when the cells in the body begin to die. He also explains that he was left with feelings of a bad conscience when he exposed Oscars’ ability, which led to the cat being branded as the purveyor of bad omens, which was not deserved.

According to Dr. Dosa the cats presence offered a certain degree of comfort and peace to both agonizing patients and their loved ones. In his opinion, “I do not think that Oscar is unique rather I think he is in a unique environment and it is clear that animals are able to sense things that we are unable to percieve”.

Last month the Golden Bells Handbell Group shared their music with the patients and staff at Cudeca’s day clinic in Arroyo de la Miel.

There is something very special about the sound of handbells; relaxing and yet, at the same time, energizing. The ringers’ evident joy in ringing passed between performers and audience as the audience hummed along with the well-known tunes.

The concert ended; the bells packed away,

thanks and farewells exchanged, everyone was left with the feel-good factor.

The Handbell Group, under the direction of Marianne Wicks, an honorary life member of The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain, is formed from members of Club Charity and Pleasure, El Paraiso, Estepona.

Salvador Pendón presenta el balance de la Semana Santa 2010, con datos que muestran incrementos El presidente del Patronato Provincial de Turismo de la Costa del Sol, Salvador Pendón, ha presentado el informe del Patronato de Turismo sobre el grado de ocupación hotelera de la Semana Santa, que este año ha aumentado un 10 % con respecto al año pasado. La ocupación hotelera en la Costa del Sol durante la Semana Santa 2010 ha superado el 76 %.

Según el presidente del Patronato Provincial de Turismo Costa del Sol, Salvador Pendón, “ha sido una Semana Santa excelente en habiéndose incluso superado las previsiones”. No en vano, añadió: el grado de ocupación durante esta semana de vacaciones ha aumentado un 10 % con respecto al pasado año.

El presidente mostró su satisfacción, sobre todo, porque la tendencia, de este 2010, es que se estabilice la llegada de turistas e incluso se pueda registrar un aumento de algunos puntos con respecto al año pasado. En concreto, desde el lunes 29 de marzo al miércoles 31, la ocupación ha sido del 65,24 % y desde el jueves y durante todo el fin de semana, el grado de ocupación se ha situado en el 86,89 %.

Por zonas, la costa ha registrado el 69,5 %; el interior, el 71,9 %; y la capital, el 86,49 %. España es el destino líder internacional de todos los principales mercados emisores hacia la Costa del Sol. De otra parte, y según la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) para el 2010, las previsiones para nuestro destino son favorables. El presidente del Patronato presentó algunas previsiones para el verano de 2010 según la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT) : España, al igual que en 2008 y 2009, sigue siendo el destino preferido por los europeos para sus vacaciones (10,4%). Le siguen de cerca Francia (con un 9,9 %) e Italia (con un 9,2

%). Sin embargo, todavía no se ha decidido por ningún destino el 17 % de los residentes de la UE que tienen intención de ir de vacaciones. Es importante destacar que España es el destino líder internacional de todos los principales mercados emisores hacia la Costa del Sol. Dos de cada tres turistas españoles afirman preferir para sus vacaciones un destino tradicional (62,6%), y otra cuarta parte, se decanta por destinos emergentes (25,9%).

Igualmente el 64% de los turistas españoles afirman que el destino planificado para sus próximas vacaciones en el año 2010 es un destino interno de España. Los siguientes destinos más importantes elegidos por los españoles para sus próximas vacaciones en el año 2010 son Italia y Francia (3% cada uno).

El 60% de los británicos se decantan por destinos tradicionales frente a un 30,3% que prefieren destinos emergentes. Según los resultados de la encuesta del Eurobarometro, España es el principal destino internacional planificado por los británicos para sus próximas vacaciones en el año 2010 con una cuota del 10%.

Los destinos vacacionales tradicionales son los preferidos mayoritariamente por el mercado turístico alemán, elegido por el 56,7%. El destino emergente es la opción del 31,9% de los turistas. España junto a Italia es el destino líder internacional en la planificación de las vacaciones de los turistas alemanes para el año 2010, elegido por el 7% cada uno.

El 58,6% de los irlandeses se decantan por destinos tradicionales frente a un 34,7% que prefieren destinos emergentes. España, se posiciona como principal destino de los irlandeses para sus próximas vacaciones en el año 2010, elegido por el 16%, por encima de los destinos internos del país, elegido por el 14%.

Los destinos vacacionales tradicionales son los preferidos mayoritariamente por el mercado turístico francés, elegido por el 57,4%. El destino emergente es la opción del 31,9% de los turistas. España, junto a Italia, y después de los destinos internos del país, son los destinos preferidos de los franceses par sus próximas vacaciones planificadas para el año 2010, mencionado por el 4% y el 2% respectivamente.

This ruling does not apply to anyone who is employed and paying their social security in Spain, or claiming a Spanish pension. Some British pensioners have already received notification of this new decree.

Salvador Pendón releases Easter 2010 report, showing increases The President of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, Salvador Pendón, has released the Tourist Board’s Easter 2010 hotel occupancy report, showing a 10% rise in rates over 2009. In Easter 2010, hotel occupancy rates on the Costa del Sol were higher than 76%.

According to Mr Pendón, “This has been a great Easter season; we’ve even gone beyond expectations.” “Occupancy rates were 10% higher than last year,” he added.

Our President was satisfied with these results, especially because the trends identified are expected to become steadier throughout 2010 in terms of the number of visitors, with rises at some points vis-à-vis 2009. From Monday, March 29 through Wednesday, March 31, the hotel occupancy rate was 65.24%, whereas from Thursday to Sunday it rose to 86.89%. Broken down by areas, the rate was 69.50% for coastal towns, 71,9% for villages in the hinterland, and 86.49% for Málaga City. The leading

outbound market was Spain.

In a similar fashion, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO)’s estimates for our travel destination this year are favourable.

Some of them, concerning the summer season on the Costa del Sol, were revealed

by Mr Pendón.

Just as in 2008 and 2009, Spain heads the ranking of most popular holiday destinations in Europe (10.4%). It is followed by France (9.9%) and Italy (9.2%). 17% EU-residents, however, have not chosen a place to go on holidays.

With regard to Spanish travellers’ preferences, two thirds choose traditional holiday destinations (62.6%), whereas a quarter prefer emerging ones (25.9%).

64% Spanish tourists say they will go on holidays in Spain. France and Italy are the other two popular choices, but they trail far behind domestic destinations (3% each).

In the UK, 60% travellers choose traditional holiday destinations, whereas emerging markets are chosen by 30.3%. According

to the Eurobarometer surveys, Spain is the most popular international choice for their 2010 holidays, with a share of 10%.

As to Irish travellers, they also seem to prefer traditional to emerging destinations (58.6% vis-à-vis 34.7%). Spain is the most popular choice with them; our country holds a share of 16% in the 2010 holiday market, even above domestic destinations (14%).

Finally, 57.4% French tourists choose traditional destinations for their holidays, vis-à-vis 31.9% who prefer emerging ones.

Spain and Italy are the most common international choices (4% and 2%, respectively), but they are less popular than domestic options.

Mind, Body and Spirit Fayre in aid of Cudeca Hospice On 2nd April, La Chispa a Mind, Body and Spirit Fayre was held at the Hippodrome in Mijas Costa to raise funds for Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice. The event included a variety of stands offering Holistic therapies, Wellness, Mind Body and Spirit, and Arts and Crafts.

Phil Speirs, editor of La Chispa magazine said, “The fayre was a great addition to the day’s racing at the Hippodrome. There was a great range of stalls offering hand made jewellery, crafts, home made produce and lots of interesting gifts as well as therapists and mediums to add the mystic touch.”

Thanks to the support of the stall holders and the public, a fantastic 630€ was raised for the Hospice. These funds will continue to help Cudeca offer the “Special Kind of Caring” to patients suffering from advanced cancer and support to their families. A special thanks to Phil Speirs for organising such a successful charity event.

Aunque este invierno ha llovido mucho, los primeros días de primavera envuelven de luz al pueblo y las nubes viajeras se han marchado a otros lugares. Si ponemos atención a nuestro oído, se oye cómo cae el agua sobre caseríos, valles y montañas.

Aurelio está dispuesto a completar sus ejercicios de matemáticas, pero tendrá que darse prisa, queda muy poco tiempo para la cena, y después de cenar a él le gusta relajarse un poquito, antes de acostarse. Algunos ejercicios no los comprende. Aurelio ha pensado pedirle a su profesor que se los explique nuevamente. El profesor de matemáticas es simpático, alto y de nariz alargada. No quiere que ninguno de sus alumnos suspenda, pero no le queda más remedio que hacerlo cada vez que alguno no pone atención a los temas que día tras día va explicando en clase. Aurelio es un niño inteligente, pero le da mucha pereza estudiar, además, no comprende demasiado bien los quebrados. El profesor le dice que tiene que saber primero qué es un numerador y un denominador, y le propone leer y oír con atención para comprender, le recomienda consultar todas las veces que lo desee, tanto en el libro como en su ordenador, y por supuesto, a él. Le aconsejó que tomara el estudio como un aprendizaje que poco a poco terminará por agradarle, como una novela en la que cada día, capítulo a capítulo, encontrará aventuras nuevas, donde la cultura se hace apetecible para conocer más. Y así hizo Aurelio, consiguió entusiasmarse cada vez más por la geografía, las ciencias, las matemáticas, la historia, la música, las artes plásticas y lengua, aprobando cada trimestre todas las asignaturas.

Cuando pasó los cursos de primaria, Aurelio se hizo un joven escritor, y le decía a todo el que le preguntaba que era escritor porque las matemáticas le ayudaron a razonar, y porque su maestro le ayudó a amar la lectura y el aprendizaje, viéndolo desde una perspectiva distinta, aprendiendo con entusiasmo y sintiéndose complacido después de cada jornada

de estudio.

Aurelio era un escritor. El ordenador le facilitaba el trabajo y así, cada día, enviaba cuentos a sus amigos por el correo electrónico. (Porque la informática, si se utiliza para un bien, es algo estupendo para lograr hacer buenos trabajos.) En una ocasión una de esas historias fue leída por la madre de un amigo, y a ésta le gustó tanto que llegó a entregarla a un hermano suyo. Éste era editor, y la historia tuvo la suerte de ser publicada. El cuento tuvo mucho éxito, pero para Aurelio lo más importante era que los demás pudieran sentir distintas emociones con lo que él había escrito.

En ese cuento se narraba la historia de una gaviota. El ave vivía en el jardín de un parque de un pueblo pequeño, jovial y pescador. La Gaviota Generosa, le decían, porque contaba, sin pereza, historias sobre unos Dígitos de Mar, a todos los que paseaban por ese hermoso parque. Algunos jilgueros le decían a la gaviota que se marchara a la playa y al mar, porque ese era el lugar donde debía estar. La gaviota le insinuaba a los jilgueros que se fueran ellos, y apreciaran y sintieran más de cerca el mar y su brisa. Los jilgueros terminaron descubriendo a los Dígitos de Mar. Así era como se llamaban unos peces, parecidos al pez lápiz, que se ven mucho en los acuarios, y que antes de ser peces fueron niños que aprobaban los exámenes de matemáticas. Aurelio, aunque sabía que aquello era únicamente un cuento escrito por él, se puso triste por los niños que no aprobaban y fue a ver a su profesor de matemáticas, que ya no impartía clases en el mismo colegio donde él estudiaba el bachiller.

Aurelio saludó al profesor de matemáticas, que en ese momento descansaba en el parque y comía una manzana. En su regazo sostenía un trozo de pastel, y le comentó: –He escrito un cuento sobre una gaviota que habla de los peces.

Son peces que antes fueron niños y se convirtieron en Dígitos de Mar cuando estos aprobaban los

exámenes de matemáticas. Ellos tienen el privilegio de nadar cuando quieren con los demás peces y vivir aventuras bajo el agua azul.

El profesor, extrañado y sorprendido, miró al muchacho y descubrió en sus ojos la luz de la sabiduría, esa que es capaz de emprender los viajes por éste y por otros planetas, conociendo hombres, fieras, seres mitológicos, países diferentes; esa luz que debe tener un joven entusiasmado por Nivel Medio Medium aprender más y más.

–¡Conque te has hecho escritor! Me alegro mucho y me agrada que hayas escrito un cuento que hable de un profesor de matemáticas. Tendré que leerlo y conocer bien a esos peces.

Quién sabe si yo alguna vez no me convierto en uno de ellos.

–Seguro que sí. Usted es profesor de matemáticas y para llegar a eso ha tenido que aprobar muchos exámenes –afirmó el muchacho.

–Creo que no se trata solamente de ser inteligente. Hay que tener fantasía y mucho interés en descubrir cada Difícil Hard día cosas nuevas y distintas –dijo el profesor ofreciéndole un trozo de pastel que se estaba comiendo después de haber terminado de merendarse la manzana.

–Me gustaría venir a verte más a menudo.

El cementerio de Manilva cuenta ya con el horno crematorio Después de casi dos años de trabajos, la Delegación de Cementerio, ha anunciado que el lunes 12 de abril comienza a funcionar el horno crematorio que se ha instalado en el cementerio municipal.

Estas obras han sido realizadas en su totalidad por trabajadores municipales, que han tenido que acondicionar toda la zona para la colocación del nuevo equipamiento. De este modo se ha instalado el horno y un depósito.

Tal y como ha informado la primera edil manilveña ya se han recibido todos los permisos necesarios para que este nuevo equipamiento empiece a funcionar.

Estos trabajos han supuesto una inversión de unos 100.000 euros por parte del Ayuntamiento, aunque hay que recordar que la Junta de Andalucía ha subvencionado parte de ellos.

De este modo, los vecinos que lo deseen pueden contar con los servicios de cremación en Manilva, ya que el horno cuenta con un sistema de incineración tanto para cadáveres como para restos.

Manilva crematorium fully operational After nearly two years the new Manilva cemetery’s crematorium is now fully operational after the incinerator was installed recently.

The cost of the project has been some 100,000 euros of which a part has come by way of grants from the Regional Government.

This means that local residents can now have their cremation services in Manilva, rather than have to travel to Estepona as they have in the past.

The Royal British Legion April 18th is the International Day at The Palacio de Congresos, Estepona and once again Joan Mason and her team will be selling good second hand clothes and other items, so if you have any further donations make sure you get them to her as soon as possible. The Legion have been lucky to obtain a larger stand this year and hope to do really well for The Poppy Appeal. Update on the euro from Moneycorp Since November the pound has been wandering, more or less aimlessly, along a six-cent wide channel three cents either side of €1.1250. In November and December the action centred on €1.11. In January and for most of February the focus was €1.14 and the end of February it dropped to €1.10. March has seen a catch-

up process during which sterling has recovered to the middle of its four-month range.

The lack of direction suggests a steady relationship between the pound and the euro but it would be fairer to describe the alliance as a marriage of inconvenience.

For the euro and the pound the underlying problems are the same ones that have dogged them since the end of last year; debt and politics.

The common thread throughout has been the way investors have been following the opinion polls.

The more level the reading for the main two parties, the more investors shrink from buying sterling. They see a real danger in an election result that leaves neither with a working majority.

The chancellor’s budget on 24 March was plainly a piece of election theatre. No-one can be in any doubt that there will be another budget after the election.

Investors seem relaxed about that postponement as long as somebody wins. Two hands - or more - on the nation’s financial tiller would be a scarier prospect.

The woes of the euro stem almost entirely from the maladministration of previous Greek governments. In a situation dating back to Greece’s fudged membership of the euro (many said at the time it should not have gone ahead) the Athens government of the day used financial derivatives to conceal the true scale of its indebtedness in order to meet the Maastricht criteria for euro membership. The EU Commission would dearly love to put together a rescue package, funded within the euro zone. Chancellor Merkel and the German populace disagree. After weeks of negotiation and several reported ‘agreements’ there is still no common ground in Brussels.

That one could run and run, and the UK election campaign will certainly run until 6 May. A benign UK election result and resolution of the Greek drama might level the playing field for the pound and the euro but the chances of both happening at the same time are remote. Whoever sorts out their problems first will be the currency winner, if only in the short term.

Las gimnastas Manilveñas siguen cosechando éxitos El 21 de Marzo 12 alumnas de la Escuela Municipal de Gimnasia Rítmica de Manilva participaron en el Torneo Interprovincial de Algeciras.

Las participantes, del nivel B en la modalidad de conjuntos y categoría alevín y senior, obtuvieron buenos resultados, con un meritorio segundo puesto de las seniors.

En la modalidad Individual, participaron 5 alumnas, quedando Raquel Alberto Romero, 2ª clasificada en categoría Junior.

En el Nivel C, en la Modalidad de conjuntos, participaron 12 alumnas, en las categorías Prebenjamin: Amber Smith, Nuria Benitez, Nerea Galan, Maria Castro, Paola Gil y Tilly Chamberlain y en Benjamin: Anastasia Walters, Marcia Caldarelli, Alba Zenteno, Laura Dormido, Ana Muñoz y Connie Smith.

De todos los municipios participantes: Gibraltar, Algeciras, Los Barrios, Mijas, Ronda, La Línea de la Concepción, Tesorillo, Palmones, Manilva participó en minoría, y pese a ese significativo dato, las alumnas quedaron las primeras, en ambas categorías.

En el Nivel B, en la Modalidad de Conjuntos, participaron 10 alumnas, en las categorías Alevín y Senior, quedando María Gil, Raquel Alberto, Josefina González, Yolanda Alberto y Ana Martín en 3º puesto.

En el mismo Nivel B, en la Modalidad Individual, participaron 6 alumnas, de las cuales obtuvimos un primer puesto en la categoría Junior Raquel Alberto Romero y un segundo en Senior conseguido por Yolanda Alberto Romero Cabe destacar que el próximo sábado 17 de abril, 24 alumnas se desplazaran a la localidad de Ronda, para disputar un Torneo Interprovincial.

La siguiente competición será en Ceuta, donde serán siete las alumnas participantes en las categorías mayores y avanzadas. A partir de ahí, las citas para nuestras gimnastas será en Palmones, Mijas y La línea de la Concepción.

Posteriormente, pasado el meridiano del mes de mayo, el día 22, tendrá lugar en nuestro municipio el “III Festival de la Primavera - Villa de Manilva”, que este año se introducirá a nivel de competición.

Good results for Manilva’s gymnasts Last month 12 students from the Manilva Municipal Rhythmic Gymnastics School took part in the Algeciras Interprovincial Tournament.

Manilva participated in the ‘Senior’ and ‘Alevin’ categories in the Level B team events taking second place in the senior event.

In the individual competition, 5 students took part with Raquel Alberto Romero taking second place in the Junior category.

In the Level B team event 10 students took part in the ‘Alevin’ and ‘Senior’ categories with Maria Gil, Raquel Alberto, Josefina González, Alberto and Ana Yolanda Martin taking 3rd place.

In the same Level B, individual event, 6 students participated, of which Raquel Alberto Romero took first place in the Junior Raquel , whilst a second place in the ‘Senior’ event went to Yolanda Alberto Romero.

Next Saturday, April 17th, 24 students will compete in Ronda, in the Interprovincial Tournament.

The following competition will be in Ceuta, where the students will be participating in seven major categories. Thereafter, competition for our gymnasts will be in Palmones, Mijas and La Linea de la Concepcion.

On May, 22nd, Manilva will host the III Spring Festival - Villa de Manilva.

II Maratón BTT Villa de Estepona El próximo 18 de abril se va a celebrar en nuestra localidad el Maratón BTT “Villa de Estepona” 2010, perteneciente al XII Circuito Provincial de Bicicleta de Montaña de Málaga. La prueba esteponera dará el pistoletazo de salida a este circuito, puesto que es la primera de un total de seis maratones programados. El resto están previstos en Casares, Alhaurín El Grande, Ojen, Coín y Álora.

Después de participar durante varios años en este circuito provincial en la modalidad de Rally el pasado año se decidió optar por la modalidad maratón debido a la gran aceptación que están teniendo este tipo de pruebas en el mundo del ciclismo, y efectivamente los buenos resultados obtenidos han propiciado que se celebre nuevamente en este año.. El Maratón BTT “Villa de Estepona” 2010 está organizado por la Diputación Provincial de Málaga,

el Ayuntamiento de Estepona en colaboración con el Club Radikal Bike y la concurrencia de la Federación Andaluza de Ciclismo.

El maratón tiene una distancia total de 65 kilómetros, siendo 48 la distancia competitiva, ya que desde el Polideportivo El Carmen, lugar donde se entregarán las placas y se realizará la entrega de trofeos, se irá de forma neutralizada unos 9 kilómetros hasta la salida del tramo competitivo en la zona denominada “Cortijo de Nicola”. El recorrido trascurre por unos parajes de gran belleza natural de Sierra Bermeja desde los que se pueden contemplar unas fantásticas vistas de la Costa del Sol y el Campo de Gibraltar. Este maratón viene a dinamizar nuevamente la sierra de Estepona, la cual es de gran interés tanto para los deportistas como para los amantes de la naturaleza.

Estepona MTB Mountain Bike Marathon On Sunday, 18th April Estepona will host the Estepona MTB Mountain Bike Marathon, part of the XII Malaga Provincial Mountain Bike Circuit. The Estepona trial will be the first of six legs that will make up this year’s competition. The others will be held in Casares, Alhaurin El Grande, Ojen, Coin and Alora.

After a number of years as a rally competition this year’s circuit will be held in marathon mode due the popularity of this form of the sport.

The Estepona MTB Mountain Bike

Marathon has been organised by the Malaga Provincial Council, Estepona Town Council, Radikal Bike, in collaboration with the Andalucian Cycling Federation.

The marathon is over a 48 kilometre course with competitors making their way from the El Carmen Sports Centre to the start of the race at “Cortijo de Nicola”. The marathon will run through the Sierra Bermeja, an area of outstanding natural beauty and with fantastic views of the Costa del Sol and Campo de Gibraltar.

Concurso de pesca de Medsports, Sábado 27 de Marzo

U. Estepona CF continúa su campaña para permanecer en Segunda B

El mes pasado, Sábado 27 de Marzo, la tienda de pesca Medsports organizó un concurso de pesca de carpas en el Lago El Dorado en Alhaurín el Grande. Algunos de vosotros recordaréis el evento, aquí fue donde la BBC filmó la serie televisiva El Dorado.

Hubo un gran ambiente y los 22 participantes llegaron sobre una hora antes para prepararse y empezar con la pesca. Después de un largo periodo de lluvias, éste ha sido el primer concurso de pesca este año organizado por Medsports. Hubo variedad entre los participantes, algunos de los cuales participarán en el campeonato de mundo de pesca que se celebrará en abril en Portugal.

Si pasan esta fase, participarán en el campeonato mundial que tendrá lugar en Francia en Septiembre.

Los cebos usados en el evento fueron por supuestos verduras, chufas, maíz y cáñamo y algunos otros más.

Aunque no se pescaron grandes peces ese día, abajo encontramos la lista de resultados.

Steve Walker- 1º premio: 100 € junto con un trofeo, con un peso total de 22 libras 2 onzas.

Terry Golf (Del equipo de Medsports)2º premio: 50 €, con un total de 16 libras 4 onzas de peso.

Una victoria de 2-0 en casa ante el Águilas el fin de semana pasado puso a Estepona un paso más cerca del objetivo para este año, de permanecer en Segunda B. Después de un pobre comienzo de temporada, y la incertidumbre financiera fuera del campo, Unión Estepona, finalmente ha dado un gran salto, y un acuerdo de patrocinio con la empresa constructora local Solís B ha permitido al equipo concentrarse en su trabajo y permanecer en segunda B. Faltando cinco partidos en esta temporada, y estando en la zona baja

Medsports Fishing Competition, Saturday 27th March Last month, on Saturday, 27th March, local fishing tackle and sports equipment store Medsports held a Carp fishing competition at Lago El Dorado, Alhaurin el Grande.

A few of you may remember the venue, this is where the BBC filmed the ill-fated TV series El Dorado.

There was a great atmosphere and the 22 entrants arrived over an hour early to get set up and start fishing. After the long period of wet weather this was Medsports’ first Carp fishing competition this year.

There were certainly some variety among the competitors, some of whom are fishing in April’s World Championship qualifiers in Portugal. If they get through this leg they will be entering the World Championships in France in September.

The baits used at the event were of course Boilies, Tiger Nuts, Sweet Corn and Hemp plus much more. Although no really big fish came out that day, listed below are the results.

U.Estepona CF continue their campaign to stay in Segundo B A 2-0 win at home against Aguilas last weekend put Estepona another step nearer this year’s main goal of staying up in Segundo B. After a poor start to the season, and financial uncertainty off the pitch, Union Estepona finally got into their stride, and a sponsorship deal with local construction company B Solis has allowed the team to concentrate on the job in hand.

With five games left of this season, Estepona are 6th from the bottom, but

favourable results in other matches last weekend mean that the local side are only 3 points off a mid table spot.

Union Estepona are away to Atlético Ciudad in a midweek match followed by Sangonera on Sunday. The following two matches are away to Jerez Industrial on the 25th April, then a home derby against Marbella on May 2nd. The concluding match will be against Betis B in Seville on the 9th May.

Every Thursday - (lunch optional add 12.00€) During May Cordoba celebrates its world famous Patios Festival. Our trips on the 6th and 13th of May fall within the festival, so book early to avoid disappointment. This elegant city was once the capital of Islamic Spain. As a result of this it boasts the “Mezquita”, one of the most fascinating buildings in the world. This building was the most beautiful and largest mosque outside of the Middle East and is now the cathedral of Cordoba. It is also possible to just wander through the old Jewish Quarter or just take in the beauty of the city’s gardens, fountains and parks.

Seville

Every Friday (lunch optional add 12.00€) - Seville is the capital of Andalucia. One of Seville’s major landmarks is its cathedral minaret “La Giralda”, built in the 12th century and the third largest temple in christianity.

Upon arrival, we take a short tour, including a visit to the majestic Plaza de Espana, La Giralda, and the Cathedral. (entrance fee included in price). Spanish lakes Every Friday - (lunch optional + 12€) The trip takes you inland to an old olive mill, for a fully guided tour, and when in season, we see the full olive oil production process (light refreshments included). Then on to the citurs fruit farm, with over 17,000 trees, where we sample fresh fruit straight from the tree.
