Initially in English only, The Resident Plus will plug the gap between issues of The Resident which is published in the middle of each month, and will act as a supplement keeping our readers up-to-date with what’s going on in our region.

Welcome to The Resident Plus, the new supplement, published online at the beginning of each month.

In the four-and-a-half years since launching The Resident we have endeavoured to provide a publication that serves the local community and responds to its needs as well as staying abreast of developments in the publishing and communications world.

In 2008 due to a strong demand from local residents The Resident became a bilingual publication with items in both English and Spanish, and in 2009 The Resident launched its Facebook page which has proven a useful addition and enabled more interaction with our readers.

For a couple of years now we have used online software which allows us to make The Resident available on the web in a form that reproduces as close as possible the experience of reading a newspaper, a service that has proven increasingly popular.

With the rise of the smartphone, and ‘tablets’ such as the IPad, it now makes it practical for us to produce a supplement that fills the gap between publications, and which isn’t limited by the logistics of printing and distribution - thus is born The Resident Plus.

The British Consulate and San Roque Borough Council plan open day

The Mayor of San Roque, Fernando Palma is pleased to announce that the British Embassy in Malaga’s Pension, Benefit & Healthcare Team will be holding an open day in San Roque town centre on Thursday 3rd February 2011, in association with San Roque Council’s Foreign Residents Information Office.

This open day event in San Roque has been devised to offer advice on issues relating to British people living in Spain.

Nevertheless, it is essential to clarify that the Consulate will not be advising people on Gibraltarian Healthcare and Benefits, which is exclusively an internal issue competence of the Government of Gibraltar.

Information will be provided on the services offered by the Consulate, how working in Spain will affect your pension rights and where to apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).

The Pension, Benefit and Healthcare Team will provide essential information about what can be claimed in Spain, what help is available from the UK and the services that the team can offer.

One-to-one appointments can be pre-

booked using the UKinSpain website.

The event will take place on Thursday 3rd February 2011 at 11.00am at the Teatro Juan Luís Galiardo, Alameda Alfonso XI, 11360, San Roque, Cádiz.

Personnel from the Foreign Residents Information Office in San Roque will be attending the event as well and will be happy to advise British residents on any matter related to Spanish bureaucracy.

The Mayor stated that it is an important event for British residents in the borough of San Roque, but is open to other UK citizens living in the Gibraltar Area or the Sotogrande catchment zone. The British citizens living in the municipality of San Roque make up 7% of the local population, although the number of British people in the Sotogrande area make up more than half the total number of foreign residents.

Palma added that this is the first event of its kind in the Gibraltar Area, previously the British Consulate have organized similar events on the Costa del Sol as far as Estepona and in the province of Cadiz at the town of Chiclana.

Luxury rural ‘Biohotel’ proposed for Estepona Plans were recently announced for the construction of a 110 room luxury ‘Biohotel to be built in the La Tejilla area of Estepona.

The proposal, which has the approval of Estepona’s local authorities, looks to create a top class ecological friendly hotel using the latest bioclimatic architecture

and providing a range of facilities and infrastructure aimed at outdoor pursuits and rural tourism.

This privately funded venture is expected to have a budget of some 10 million euros, and is merely awaiting approval from the regional government.

16 foreign residents sign up as first time voters in San Roque With the period for foreign residents to register on the electoral roll for this year’s local elections ending on the 31 January, some 16 new voters were registered in the borough of San Roque.

Of these sixteen, 13 were EU citizens and 3 were from other countries who have an agreement with Spain for their nationals to vote.

In the European Parliamentary elections two years ago there were 19,863 voters in San Roque, 311 of whom were from EU countries other than Spain.

These local elections will be the first in which certain non-EU residents will be able to vote, albeit only those from

countries with special arrangements.

Curiously, of the 13 EU residents who signed up for the first time, all of them were Romanian nationals.

Construction of the long-awaited footbridge over the mouth of the Rio Manilva river connecting the Sabinillas and Casares Costa promenades should begin in the near future.

The 32m long, 1.8m wide wooden footbridge is estimated to take 3

months to build, at a cost of 112,000 euros which will be borne by the Coasts Authority.

The project is just awaiting certain bureaucratic processes before commencement.

Presentation of foreign residents’ programme of events and activities Manilva’s Foreign Residents Department will present their programme of events at the Restaurante Rey Arturo on the Paseo Maritimo in Sabinillas on Friday 4 February from midday.

The presentation will cover events and activities during the period February through to May, which includes a visit to Castellar Zoo, a trip to Benaoján, a

New sports hall provides facilities for a thousand children

The project which will see major improvements to access and facilities on the Casares Costa takes a step closer after Construcciones Bonifacio Solís S.A. were recently awarded the 400,000 contract.

Among the works are an elevated footpath which will connect Playa Chica with the Promenade in front of La Perla;

lighting; improved vehicular access and parking, etc.

The aim will be to improve connections between the beach and the Rosario Gardens by way of a new footpath and to create a beachside walk from the banks of the Rio Manilva right through to the border with the borough of Estepona.

San Roque’s new Pabellón Cubierto de la Bahía sports hall will provide sporting facilities for a thousand children according to San Roque’s Mayor, Fernanco Palma, speaking at the inauguration ceremony last week.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Junta de Andalucia’s sports minister, Luciano Alonso, and a packed grandstand of local residents, who were there not just for the opening

ceremony but also for the programme of sporting activities put on to celebrate the occasion.

Spectators were treated to displays of Rhythmic Gymnastics, Taekwondo and Basketball during the day-long spectacle.

After the inauguration, Mayor Palma thanked the regional government for their continuing investment in the San Roque’s sporting infrastructure.

Gibraltar to issue Royal Engagement commemorative stamp The first Gibraltar stamp issue of 2011 will commemorate the Royal Engagement between HRH Prince William and Miss Kate Middleton. This will consist of a stamp sheet featuring an official photograph of the Royal couple taken during the press conference announcing their engagement.

Gibraltar is proud to be one of the first countries to issue a stamp of the Royal Engagement and will become the first Commonwealth country to feature Miss

This stamp will form part of a set, which will also include a Royal Wedding stamp sheet, which will be issued later this year and will feature an official photograph of the Royal Wedding.

Estepona will be holding its annual ‘Carnaval’ celebrations later this month from 24 to 27 February.

Mayoress meets with local residents and businesses The Mayoress of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, visited Duquesa Port last Thursday to have an informal chat with local residents and discuss their concerns and ideas.

She dropped into the H2O cafe bar where she met with a number of business people and residents. Amongst the topics that were brought up was concern about security in the area, another hot topic was the Port’s image

and state of disrepair.

Sra Muñoz outlined a number of improvements scheduled for the coming weeks and months, including creating a more impressive entrance; more parking; and improved rubbish collection points.

The Mayoress was pleased at the outcome of the meeting and intends to make it a regular event, news of which we will bring you in future editions.

Portillo bus company in dispute with Town Council over debt Estepona’s Town Council has reached a unanimous decision to withdraw the concession to operate the town’s urban bus service from its current holders CTSA-Portillo.

The step was taken after the transport company halted the service on January 3 claiming the council owed it over 1.3 million euros, the debt allegedly being run up between 1999 and 2007. The company is also claiming legal costs and interest.

Negotiations between the company and the Town Hall broke down, Mayor Valadez stating that “the last meeting with the company lasted only ten minutes”.

In the meantime the coach company Autocares Ricardo has been brought in to provide an interim service on a 40day contract, although it is expected to provide the service between Avenida

Twenty families who were evacuated from their homes in the former Mediterranean Hotel building on Gibraltar’s Eastern Beach have been told there is little chance of them being able to return.

The families were forced to leave just before Christmas after engineer’s were unable to guarantee their safety after an investigation into structural defects in the former hotel turned apartment block.

The families, some of them tenants and others owners, were put up at the Caleta and Bristol hotels whilst further surveys have been carried out. The government of Gibraltar has in the last week contacted the residents to inform them that the possibility of returning to their homes in the near future is practically nil and that they would continue to pay their room and board at their hotels at least until February 18.

Manilva’s Youth and Foreigners departments have organised a trip to Extremadura and Valle del Jerte The excursion will take place from 24 to 27 March, during which visits will be made to the towns of Trujillo and Caceres, along with the Yuste Monastery.

In addition visitors will be treated to the breathtaking landscape of the Jerte, famous for its cherry blossom.

Emmerdale script writer runs courses in Spain WriteScript Productions are providing an exciting opportunity for aspiring writers this spring. Writing for Stage and Screen is a four day course led by professional theatre and television writer Philip Meeks aimed to give a practical insight into the world of script writing Open to writers of any experience, the course to be held in the Manilva area April 7th-10th, will consist of a series of workshops, lectures and group sessions opening the doors on trade secrets including how to tell a story, how to develop characters and how to write sparkling dialogue. It will provide a relaxed informal and friendly atmosphere for group members to hone their skills, learn something new and support and share with each other along the way. The aim is that every one attending will leave with the start of an exciting idea they will have been given the confidence to continue working on after the course has ended.

WriteScript Productions is the brain child of journalist and business woman Francine Cohen who says “Having made the Costa del Sol my second home I know how popular writing is as an activity in the area. My aim is to provide a unique experience by bringing over an accomplished writer who is currently in much demand in the UK. Philip is also an experienced teacher and any course will be pitched to appeal to everyone regardless of their level of experience.

He regularly teaches at several leading universities in the North of England and recently saw the publication of his first prose, a ghost novella in The Obverse Book of Ghosts and a modern fairy tale published by Duality Press.

Francine Cohen has been a leading entertainment journalist for almost two decades being one of Hello’s key correspondents in the North of England and writing extensively for the Daily Express, Daily Mail and countless women’s and television periodicals.

Manilva winter hiking programme Manilva’s environment department have published their programme of walks for the winter season. The hikes are aimed at families and are free for children under 14.

The routes are: Sunday Feb 13 - Jacinto Porro - Alcorrin.

Distance 9 km. Category: Easy.

General conditions: Participants must be over 6 years of age.

All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants should be of an appropriate level of physical fitness for the distances and level of difficulty of the walk.

Guides reserve the right to refuse those

deemed unfit for a particular route.

Places can be booked up until the Wednesday prior to that particular walk.

Originally celebrated in the week or two prior to Shrove Tuesday, nowadays the dates are little more flexible as its religious origins are overlooked.

In fact the Carnival in its present form owes its popularity to 17thC merchant seafarers who spread the tradition, from its origins in Venice throughout the

Mediterranean and to other ports of call on both sides of the Atlantic, with some of the most famous celebrations in Cadiz, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. Those same sailors also brought back with them influences from the New World which add an element of the exotic to the festivities.

There are a number of theories on the origin of the name Carnival, the most common of which is that the

Burying the Sardine Some towns such as Estepona and La Linea continue the old Carnival tradition know as Entierro de la Sardina or the Burying of the Sardine.

On the last day of the Carnival people dress in black and hundreds of grieving “widows” shed tears as they march in the funeral procession in honour of the poor dead sardine.

The roots of this tradition appear to go back to the Carnival celebration held in Madrid, where on Ash Wednesday a sardine was buried. Earlier, however,

and perhaps more in line with Lent, which was what the ritual was meant to announce, a pig was slit down the middle and buried. In Spanish cerda or cerdina means pig and it is thought that the word was somehow deformed into sardina.

In a slight variation on the tradition, here the ‘Sardine’ is borne to the beach where it is burnt on a bonfire, after which a firework display rounds off the Carnival celebrations.

Foreign residents sometimes find it difficult to grasp the meaning behind some of Spain’s more unusual traditions:

name comes from the Italian carne- or carnovale, from Latin carnem (meat) and levare (lighten or raise), literally “to remove the meat” or “stop eating meat”.

It has also been claimed that it comes from the Latin words caro (meat) and vale (farewell), hence “farewell to meat” or “farewell to the flesh”, letting go of the earthly or bodily self). Another theory states that it originates from the Latin carrus navalis, which was a Greek cart carrying a statue of a god which featured in the Roman winter solstice celebrations.

The biggest event in Andalucia is the Cadiz carnival enjoyed by thousands of people thronging the streets of this historic city, many dressed in extravagant costumes and entertained by wandering groups of musicians. Cadiz has moved away from the glitz and glamour of many of the other major carnival and has acquired a reputation for a more rowdy and politically irreverent festival which is epitomised by the performances of satirical musical groups, something of a cross between barbershop and Monty

Python. These compete for the coveted title in a contest which is followed with close scrutiny by aficionados.

Silhouette Showgirls are a 5 piece progressive rock band from Wiltshire formed in the summer of 2007. Acoustic songwriters and lifelong friends Daniel Gibb (vocals) and Matthew Coombs (lead Guitar) decided to form the band, looking to expand and develop on their unique sound. One time heavy metal drummer Joel harding and Bass player Ben Whelan ( both ex Scarlet Carson) joined the band along with good friend Matthew Green (guitar and backing vocals) and have been working incredibly to shape a sound that is now being recognised across Britian.

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva Shop Volunteers Get Together

Twenty-Six of the Age Concern shop volunteers gathered in the Age Concern Centre in Calle Zaragoza, 25, Estepona last Wednesday (the 26th) for a get together. Everyone bought some food along and enjoyed sharing that, plus a drink, as they got to know each other and chat about the work they undertake

on behalf of the charity. An Executive Committee member welcomed them and stressed how important the work of running the shop was to the finances of the charity, particularly now that a Centre was being opened for elderly people in the area on February 7th.

Drop-In Centre Work is almost finished on completing the first Age Concern Drop-In Centre.

The doors will open on Monday 7th February at 10 am. Initially the Centre will open three mornings a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) from 10 am to 1 pm. It is situated at 25, Calle Zaragoza in Estepona.

The Centre is for older people who are looking to socialise with others, or

looking for advice and information. In the future it is intended to run activities in the Centre.

The club organises a wide range of activities such as free English and Spanish classes, painting lessons, dressmaking, dance and theatre workshops, trips and outings, lunch and

dinner parties, golf, darts, pool and table tennis tournaments.

The club is currently in temporary accommodation whilst their usual premises in the Marina de Casares Commercial Centre are being renovated, which is expected to be completed by the end of March.

David Hockney, painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, was an important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Caps is a none profit making organisation that tries to help different charities along the coast from Cudeca to Aspendan and at Christmas they gave out hampers to the needy through the church in San Pedro.

Caps meets every Wednesday morning at 11am for coffee at the El Paraiso Country Club.

A day at the Ascari Resort with the RS Academy

y day began an hour earlier than it should have.

Excitement was my alarm call, and the anticipation ran through my veins like a caffeine hit from the first coffee of the day. I was awake and ready for what lay ahead, the RS Academy experience at the Ascari race resort just outside Ronda. It was going to be a thrilling day of pure speed and adrenaline; little did I know that it was going to be more than just that. Rob Stanbury the Managing Director of the RS Academy, and his team had kindly invited myself and some of the Talk Radio Europe team up to the Ascari track for a racing experience which surpassed all expectations.

We arrived at the Ascari resort after negotiating the Ronda road in a journey that seemed to take only a few minutes.

Rob, and his team Barry, James and Bertie from the RS Academy were there to welcome us. The setting of the Ascari resort was stunning, with a deafening silence that was soon to be broken by the roar of a FERRARI F430 CHALLENGE, a ruthless, 200mph racing Ferrari that goes 0-60mph in just over 3 seconds. The other car that we were going to be driven in was the CATERHAM SUPERLIGHT, an open top 2 seater , 2 litre track car, or a “very light car with a ridiculously big engine” As M.D. Rob described it with a smile on his face. The Caterham goes from 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds and will achieve speeds of about 140 mph on the straights. After being advised on the safety procedures over a cup of coffee and refreshments we were provided with proper racing suits, crash helmets and shoes, the time had come. Rob, James and Bertie were our professional drivers, highly trained and with plenty of experience, you could see motor sport

was in their blood. Stephanie Miller was first out in the Caterham. 3 laps went by rather quickly and her reaction when she returned to the pit lane was simply,” exhilarating”. I must add this was said with a smile spanning the length of her face.

I was up next, it was the Ferrari I wanted and it was the Ferrari I got. Bertie was my driver, he is the quickest driver of the 3 ( Steve Gilmore will vouch for that).

I was ready, harnessed in by the racing belts, helmet firmly tightened, and my heart rate increasing by the second, not through fear, but sheer adrenaline. What lay ahead was 3 laps, 1 lap consisting of 23 corners and 5.4 km, my trust was with

Bertie and I had no problem with that.

Bertie is a professional driver, having completed more than 3000 circuits of Ascari, I was in safe hands this is his job. The pit Marshall waved the green flag and we accelerated. The power of the Ferrari F430 consumed me. The speed was incredible and Bertie’s skill behind the wheel was unquestionable.

The back straight dissipated in a matter of seconds as the Ferrari hit about 175180mph. The traction control dealt with the corners as though they had known each other for years. This was a racing experience, a proper racing car on a proper racing track. Despite the speed I managed to catch a glimpse of a Marshall on almost every corner, at no stage did I feel my life was in danger, it was thrilling! My only disappointment

was when Bertie pulled into the pit lane, 16 km, 69 corners in only 6 and a half minutes, it was over, and I wanted more!

Another 3 laps was to follow in the Caterham Superlight, a completely different racing experience, plenty of fun but not as serious as the F430 Challenge. 3 hot laps with James at the wheel, the son of our host Barry. James has been behind the wheel from the age of 6 and has competed very successfully in British kart championships over the years, this was clear to see. His racing lines were immaculate, and his control around the corners made me realise this is where he belongs, behind the wheel!

After the morning session of racing it was time for lunch. A delicious buffet of hot and cold food in the Ascari clubhouse, and a relaxing chat with the RS Academy guys. The hospitality was matching the racing, it was clear to see everybody was enjoying themselves immensely.

After lunch we were treated to a guided tour of the superb facilities at the Ascari resort. A selection of racing, classic and sports cars that had my full attention.

For half an hour I marveled at one of the biggest private collection of cars in the world including a 1957 Ferrari California, 2 Le Mans 24 hour racing cars, the collection of Ascari supercars built by Ascari, and unbelievably the Benetton F1 car driven by Michael Schumacher during his first formula 1 world championship winning season

and the 2 Ferrari Formula 1 cars driven by team mates Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger. We were also told that that the entire fleet of Jaguar F1 cars was in the process of being rebuilt. I was in my element.

One last spin in an AC Cobra replica brought an unforgettable day to a close.

The whole experience provided by the RS Academy was unique and incredible, and truly a day I will never forget. My sincere thanks to Rob and his team for looking after us so well.

On reflection 24 hours after the event, I can see what Rob and his team are trying to achieve. Previously the Ascari resort was always regarded as being very inaccessible, you have to be a member or know somebody that is a member and so on. This is no longer the case. The RS Academy can give anybody a chance to enjoy the Ascari Resort. This is not a place for only motor racing fans. Paul Casey’s victory in Bahrain books him a place at the Volvo World Match Play Championship

Paul Casey has earned himself a place in the Volvo World Match Play Championship with a win in the Volvo Golf Champions which took place at Bahrain’s Royal Golf Club last month.

Casey joins a growing list of golfing heavyweights who will contest the Match Play Championship which will

be held at Finca Cortesin Golf Club, Casares from 19 to 22 May 2011.

Already confirmed are Graeme McDowell, Y E Yang, Ross Fisher and Søren Kjeldsen, with others being added to the roll as the tour calendar progresses.

Estepona grab a point from Sevilla Atletico fixture Union Estepona Club de Futbol snatched a valuable point from their match away to second place Sevilla Atletico on Sunday to keep their hopes alive of staying up this season. Despite falling behind to an Atletico goal shortly after the half time break, an 81 minute equaliser by Cabello gave them the valuable draw over a superior side.

After the turmoil and poor results of

the last few months, the change of management at the club, with Antonio Montero ‘Nene’ taking charge of coaching last month, has resulted in no losses. Estepona now need to start clocking up some wins if they are to continue in national level football next season.

Their next match is at home this Sunday, 6 February to Roquetas.

New signings for U Estepona CF To help with the team’s campaign to stay up, ‘Nene’ has signed up midfielder Adrián Ruiz Ortiz, who has seen action with Marbella, Caravaca, Malaka, Puerto Malagueño and Pliego de Córdoba, and has strengthened his attack team with

new forward Pablo Valencia Rivada, formerly of Jerez CF, Don Benito, Sevilla Atlético, Los Barrios and Villanovense.

Barbarians U18s give a good account of themselves versus Marbella RC

Before Christmas, the Under 18 Gibraltar CG Ice Barbarians lost away to Malaga 43-14 and following the Christmas break, the team has been looking forward to continuing their season with a fresh new start, putting their previous results behind them.

Considering the previous encounters between Gibraltar and Marbella, many would have thought that this game would have been a walkover. However, with the arrival of Paul Forster and his coaching, the players have been guided though a different approach to training and set out to apply what they do in training to the match situation.

The team were given several goals to achieve in this match, regardless of the score, if those goals were achieved, the team were considered successful. Right from the kick off Marbella attempted to use their backs to run at our defensive line, through the middle of the pitch.

To their surprise, the Gibraltar defence held strong and prevented their backs from breaking through the middle of the defence. With the new tactic of five channel rugby, with three selected runners, Gibraltar was able to put their opposition under pressure.

The match started of being evenly contested, with possession changing over and each team battling hard to get over the gain line. However, Gibraltar was managing to put the Marbella team under intense pressure, leading them to slowing the ball down illegally. Although Marbella showed ill discipline, Gibraltar was unable to capitalise on this and came away from their twenty-two with no points. A well contested first half ended with the score at 0-0, much to the shock of the opposition.

The second half began much like the first, with both teams attempting to gain territory and score. A powerful forward drive, from Marbella, five meters out from the try line put them onto the score sheet. The try was converted and Marbella took the lead with seven points to zero. Marbella continued to put Gibraltar under pressure, and with Gibraltar playing into the wind this half, they struggled to relieve the pressure.

A five meter attacking scrum and with quick hands, Marbella scored into the corner and the try was converted.

Gibraltar refused to let all this hard work go to waste. They continued to

use their five channel ball tactic and their three runners were taking the ball laterally and at pace and were breaking the opposition defensive line.

From their own twenty-two meter line, Gibraltar battled hard and made good yardage into the Marbella twenty-two.

A powerful run saw Sean Simmonds break the defence and fend off a tackle to score Gibraltar’s first points of the game. The conversion was missed but Gibraltar was in the game with the score at 14-5.

Once again, the game returned to one that was evenly contested but Marbella were able to seal the win with another converted try at the corner flag to put them 21-5 up.

Regardless of the result, Gibraltar walked off the pitch victorious as they had achieved what they set out to do.

Considering their last result against Marbella was 85-5, 21-5 was a respectable score line, which the opposition worked hard to gain. This result has given the team a great deal of confidence going into their final three games of the season. Every player put one hundred percent effort into the game but Moussa Tuznani was selected Man of the Match for brilliant attacking rugby, carrying the ball into contact successfully and getting over the gain line every time.
