Editorial Bienvenido a la edición de abril de The Resident. Tras tener varias semanas para volver a acostumbrarme a la silla del editor, creo que es el momento de compartir con vosotros algunos de nuestros planes para el periódico The Resident, el sitio Web de The Resident y el sitio Web de Manilva Life.

Cuando lancé Manilva Life en Internet hace unos 12 años, era con la intención de proporcionar una plataforma comunitaria para los residentes y visitantes de habla inglesa de Manilva. Esta misión se extendió dos años más tarde, cuando lanzamos The Resident en formato impresos, que pronto creció para incluir noticias e información en inglés y español. A pesar de las difíciles condiciones comerciales a finales de la pasada década y principios de la actual, The Resident y Manilva Life siguieron cumpliendo su función. Finalmente, he recibido opiniones muy positivas de nuestros lectores, muchos de los cuales lamentaron la pérdida de los Sudokus mensuales. Bueno, te alegrará saber que desde este número los Sudokus han vuelto. No sé si me lo agradecerás o me odiarás por ello, pero eso es otra historia.

Welcome to the April issue of The Resident. Having had a few weeks to settle back into The Editor’s chair I feel it’s time to share with you some of our plans for The Resident Newspaper, The Resident website and Manilva Life website.

When I launched Manilva Life online some 12 years ago, it was with the aim of providing a community platform for English speaking residents and visitors of Manilva. This mission was expanded two years later when we launched The Resident in print form which was soon expanded to include news and information in both English and Spanish. Despite difficult trading conditions at the end of the last decade, and the beginning of this one, The Resident and Manilva Life continued to fulfill this role.

At the end of February, the paper’s owners passed the reins over to The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George which has presented a unique opportunity to create a truly community based media platform to provide news, information and articles to as wide a section of the local population as possible, representing a broad range of interests.

To do this we are looking for volunteers to help with content for the newspaper and websites, photography, helping to manage our websites and social media platforms, etc. You can do as much or as little as you like, and don’t forget any profits generated go to supporting the St George Charity’s projects in the local community.

If you are interested in this, or in volunteering for the St George Charity in any way, then contact editor@theresident.eu. Thank you in advance.

Finally, I’ve had a lot of great feedback from readers, many of whom lamented the loss of the monthly Sudokus, well you’ll be glad to know that as of this issue the Sudokus have returned. Whether you’ll be thanking me or cursing me though is another matter.

El 3 de julio, easyJet lanzará un servicio bisemanal a Manchester

julio, la aerolínea ofrecerá otros dos vuelos a Londres Gatwick, martes y jueves por la tarde, lo que elevará a 13 el número de vuelos semanales en los meses de temporada alta estival. La ruta a Bristol, inaugurada en abril de 2015, constará de tres vuelos semanales martes, jueves y domingos. Monarch Airlines

easyJet

On 3rd July easyJet will launch

a new twice weekly service to Manchester on 3rd July, flying on Wednesdays and Sundays.

From 19th July easyJet will provide an additional 2 services to London Gatwick on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, offering a total of 13 services per week in the peak summer months. Services to Bristol, which started in April 2015, will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays; but a larger A320 aircraft will operate on Sundays, offering an additional 48 seats per week.

Monarch Airlines

Monarch Airlines will operate an

additional weekly service from Birmingham. Furthermore, the regular schedule will change; Birmingham flights will no longer operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays instead.

Sunday flights will continue as normal.

On 1st May Monarch Airlines will offer a London Gatwick service.

This will operate four times weekly, on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Monarch Airlines will thus service Gibraltar from 4 airports: London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester and Birmingham.

ás de 500 canciones de casi 30 países participaron en el Festival Internacional de la Canción de Gibraltar de este año, de las cuales el jurado seleccionó a 14 finalistas, que competirán para ganar en la Noche de Gala, que se celebrará en el Tercentenary Sports Hall de Gibraltar el sábado 23 de abril a partir de las 7:30 de la tarde. Junto con los finalistas, la audiencia podrá disfrutar de la actuación invitada de Bootleg Beatles, descritos por el difunto productor de los Beatles, Sir George Martin, como “un espectáculo increíble”.

Los finalistas de este año son artistas de Cuba, Israel, Italia,

Noruega, Polonia, España, Reino Unido y Gibraltar.

Los organizaciones estuvieron impresionados con la calidad de los participantes, que mejora año tras año, augurando un buen futuro para el concurso, que fue resucitado en el año 2007.

Los participantes lucharán por varios premios en efectivo, siendo el máximo galardón de 4.000 £.

La ganadora del año pasado fue la canción “Love Is” escrita por el español José Manuel Moles e interpretada por Mo Anton, de Alemania.

14 finalists to battle it out in the 2016 Gibraltar International Song Festival

O

ver 500 songs from nearly 30 countries were entered in this year’s Gibraltar International Song Festival, from which the judging panel selected 14 finalists who will battle it out at the Gala Night to be held at Gibraltar's Tercentenary Sports Hall on Saturday 23rd April from 7.30 pm. Along with the finalists, the audience will be able to enjoy a performance by the guest act the Bootleg Beatles, described by the late former Beatles producer, Sir George Martin, as a “terrific show”.

This year's finalists are drawn from Cuba, Israel, Italy, Norway, Poland,

Spain, the UK and Gibraltar.

The organisers were impressed with the quality of the entries, which improves year-on-year and which bodes well for the future of the competition which was resurrected in 2007.

The contestants battle it out on the night for a number of cash prizes, the top award being for £4,000.

Last year's winner was the song 'Love Is' written by Spain's Jose Manuel Moles, and sung by Mo Anton from Germany.

El poder de las olas para cumplir con el compromiso de Gibraltar con la energía renovable El promotor israelí Eco Wave Power ha finalizado la construcción de un generador de 100.000 W alimentado por el oleaje marino en Gibraltar. En este momento se están realizando las pruebas del mismo.

Según el Acuerdo de compra de energía entre EWP, Gibelec y el Ministerio de Medioambiente, Energía y Cambio Climático de Gibraltar (liderado por el Honorable Ministro Dr. John Cortés), Eco Wave Power construirá una estación energética de 5 millones de W en dos fases. Durante la primera fase, Eco Wave Power construyó una estación energética de 100.000 W en el Ammunition Jetty, y en la segunda fase la planta será ampliada a un tamaño de 5 millones de W, lo que cubrirá hasta el 15% de las necesidades eléctricas de Gibraltar. Este porcentaje permitirá a Gibraltar cumplir con su compromiso de energía renovable con la UE en el 2020.

Eco Wave Power obtuvo con éxito la subvención cofinanciada de la UE bajo el Programa operativo de fondos para el desarrollo regional europeo en apoyo a la energía renovable que está pensado para asegurar que Gibraltar cuente con una energía segura y respetuosa con el medioambiente, usando al mismo tiempo métodos de producción de energía más inteligentes para combatir el cambio climático y crear innovación empresarial.

Mr. David Leb, fundador y CEO, y Ms. Inna Braveman (Co-fundadora) dijo: “Estamos muy agradecidos y entusiasmados con la oportunidad de construir nuestra planta de energía de las olas en Gibraltar, con la ayuda de la UE. La energía del oleaje es una industria creciente y la contribución financiera realizada por la UE es muy significativa y muestra un progreso positivo en la dirección correcta”.

Wave power to fulfil Gibraltar's commitment to renewable energy Israeli developer Eco Wave Power has completed construction of a 100kW wave powered generator in Gibraltar with testing now underway.

According to the Power Purchase Agreement between EWP, Gibelec and the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Change in Gibraltar (led by Honorable Minister Dr. John Cortes), Eco Wave Power will construct a 5MW wave energy power station in two phases.

During the first phase, Eco Wave Power built a 100KW power station on the Ammunition

Jetty, and in the second phase the power plant will be expanded to a size of 5MW, which will provide up to 15% of Gibraltar’s electricity needs. This percentage will enable Gibraltar to meet its renewable energy commitments to the EU by 2020.

Eco Wave Power successfully obtained the EU co-funded grant under the 2014-2020 European Regional Development Fund Operational Programme in support of renewable energy that is meant to ensure that Gibraltar has secure, affordable and climate-friendly energy,

Un cambio en la ley de Gibraltar prohíbe fumar en coches con niños

Fumar en el coche mientras haya niños en su interior será ilegal desde el jueves, 31 de marzo del 2016, anunció el Gobierno de Gibraltar.

El cambio en la legislación está diseñado para proteger a los menores de edad de los efectos dañinos de ser fumador pasivo.

La nueva ley se aplica a cualquier vehículo privado cubierto total o parcialmente por un techo, incluso si el vehículo está abierto, el aire acondicionado encendido o el fumador está sentado con la puerta del vehículo abierta.

Las investigaciones demuestran que ser fumador pasivo pone a los niños en riesgo de graves enfermedades como meningitis, asma, cáncer, bronquitis y neumonía.

Desde el 31 de marzo, será un delito que cualquier persona menor o mayor de 18 años fume en un vehículo de motor cerrado cuando haya un niño en el interior del vehículo y el vehículo esté en un lugar público.

La nueva legislación sigue a la Ley de espacios libres de humo del 2012, que estipula como delito fumar en lugares públicos cerrados y en vehículos de transporte público en Gibraltar.

Existe una ley similar en Reino Unido, Francia, Sudáfrica, gran parte de Australia, Canadá y Estados Unidos, entre otros países.

Esquivando ballenas en la Bahía de Gibraltar Se ha pedido a los buques de la Bahía de Gibraltar que tengan cuidado ya que se ha avistado repetidamente una joven ballena jorobada.

El libre movimiento de estas criaturas está protegido por ley, y se pide a los navíos que les den espacio, definido por la ley como de 60 metros, para evitar molestarlas y causarles estrés.

Gibraltar bans smoking in cars with children

Smoking in cars carrying children will be illegal as from Thursday, 31st March 2016, the Gibraltar Government has announced.

The change in legislation is designed to protect children and young people aged under 18 from the damaging effects of second-hand smoke.

The new law applies to any private vehicle enclosed wholly or partly by a roof, even if the window is open, the air conditioning is on or the smoker is sitting in the open doorway of the vehicle.

Research shows second-hand smoke can put children at risk of serious conditions such as meningitis, asthma, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia.

As from March 31st, it will be an offence for anyone aged 18 or over to smoke in an enclosed motor vehicle when there is a child in the vehicle and the vehicle is in a public place.

The new legislation follows the Smoke-Free Environment Act 2012, which made it an offence to smoke in enclosed public places and in public service vehicles in Gibraltar.

Similar legislation is already in place in UK, France, South Africa, much of Australia, Canada and the USA and several other countries.

Whale dodging in the Bay of Gibraltar Vessels in the Bay of Gibraltar have been warned to be extra vigilant following repeated sightings of a young humpback whale.

The free movement of these creatures is protected by law and vessels are being asked to give them a wide berth, defined in law as a 60 metres, to prevent disturbing them and causing distress.

El Plan de Promoción Turística y Gastronómica de Casares avanza a buen ritmo La empresa Bookealo y el Ayuntamiento ya están difundiendo los anuncios promocionales de bares y restaurantes a través de las redes sociales.

El convenio firmado entre Ayuntamiento y “Bookealo.com” conlleva la realización de una promoción totalmente gratuita de los negocios del municipio ligados a la hostelería.

La intención del Plan, ha explicado el alcalde Pepe Carrasco, es potenciar la presencia de restauradores y productores locales en canales de difusión en apogeo, como internet y Redes Sociales, lo que va a servir para promocionar a Casares como destino turístico, va a dar a conocer los productos locales, y consecuentemente, va a mejorar la economía local creando empleo.

El convenio ha supuesto la introducción de la totalidad de los Restaurantes en la guía del portal de reservas Bookealo, con sus datos traducidos por especialistas nativos a 5 idiomas (Español, Ingles, Francés, Alemán y Ruso).

En la guía se contempla toda la información relevante para los potenciales clientes, como son descripción, fotos, localización,

Casares signs agreement with online restaurant guide Bookealo The local authorities in Casares have signed an agreement with the online bar and restaurant booking site, Bookealo, to provide free promotion for the businesses in municipality’s hospitality sector.

The initiative will boost the presence of these businesses across the most important social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram and YouTube.

The restaurants will also feature on the Bookealo Guide which includes

carta, horarios, teléfonos, menús especiales y comentarios realizados por sus comensales.

Esto trae consigo que el jurado deberá proponer un listado de los proyectos valorados por orden, para que en caso de que alguna ONG no atienda al requerimiento e n cuanto a la presentación de documentación la subvención pase al siguiente más puntuado.

Casares invites entries to this year’s Blas Infante Awards

asares has announced that applications for projects for this year’s XI Blas Infante awards will be accepted up until April 16th with the award ceremony being held on July 3rd, Blas Infante’s birthday.

These awards, which were first held back in 2002, celebrate social causes at regional, national and international levels with prizes for humanitarian and educational

projects.

The local government in Casares commits 0.7% of its annual budget to these awards, which this year translates to a total fund of some 50,000 euros.

ONG Prodiversa de Málaga, Somidars Solidaris de Mallorca, Asociación Escuela Sansana, Fundación África Directo, and Batang Masaya, were among last year's recipients.

En este momento desde el Ayuntamiento se están elaborando las bases de esta segunda edición. Al igual que el pasado año, podrán participar todos los vecinos y vecinas del casco histórico de Casares que lo deseen. Los callejones y fachadas, deberán estar decoradas con elementos naturales y florales del tiempo, en arriates o macetas, con recipientes adecuados, y que permanezcan cuidados durante todo el año.

A los ganadores se les acreditará con una placa. Se establecen dos modalidades de premios, de fachada y callejón, que estarán dotados con 50 euros y 100 euros, respectivamente, en productos y soportes de jardinería, y un premio especial del público de 50 euros.

El III Descenso del Rio Guadiaro en Kayak de El Secadero The III El Secadero to Sotogrande Kayak Descent of the Guadiaro river will be y a Sotogrande se celebra el domingo 24 de abril Tras el éxito de las dos ediciones anteriores, el Ayuntamiento de Casares vuelve a colaborar en el III Descenso del Rio Guadiaro en kayac que se celebrará el domingo 24 de abril.

Se trata de un recorrido fluvial de 10 kilómetros que parte del Secadero para finalizar en la desembocadura del Río Guadiaro, en Sotogrande.

Una prueba deportiva en la que los participantes podrán disfrutar de la belleza del último tramo del cauce y de un gran ambiente deportivo.

En el recinto ferial del Secadero, desde donde tendrá lugar la salida, se va a instalar desde las 9 de la mañana la zona de recogida de material que incluye dorsal, camiseta y barrita energética.

El recorrido de 10 km., se prevé realziarlo en 2 horas y 30 minutos. La prueba finaliza en el Puerto de Sotogrande, donde los participantes celebrarán su llegada con una paella.

Following the success of the two previous editions, the Casares town hall returns to collaborate in the III Kayak Descent of the Guadiaro river to be held on Sunday April 24th.

It is a 10 kilometre route that begins at the feria ground in el Secadero and ends at the mouth of the Guadiaro river in Sotogrande.

This is an event in which participants can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the last section of the river and a great sporting atmosphere.

A station will be set up at the start in el Secadero where participants will be kitted out with a t-shirt, a number and an energy bar.

The 10 kilometre route is expected to take about 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The activity ends at the Sotogrande port, where participants will celebrate their arrival with paella.

The event is organized by the Andalucia Activities active tourism company, with the support of the

Departments of Sports of Casares and San Roque, and Sotogrande port.

Participants of all ages may enter, using their own boat or one of Andalucía Activities’. Minors must have parental consent.

Guzman Ahumada ha explicado esta mañana que el Ayuntamiento prepara la adecuación del callejón entre las calles Barrio Alto y Barrio Bajo de Casares; la creación de una zona verde de recreo con tirolina y otras atracciones junto al Arroyo de la Parrilla, en la zona del cruce de Casares Costa; y en El Secadero, la mejora y ampliación de parque de calle Gaucín.

En la reunión mantenida con los representantes de la oposición,

el teniente de alcalde ha informado a la oposición sobre las actuaciones proyectadas a medio y largo plazo en los Baños de la Hedionda, y sobre los pasos que vienen dando el equipo de gobierno en este sentido.

Recordamos que el Ayuntamiento realiza mejoras en la zona de cara a la nueva temporada, ya se ha desbrozado el cauce del arroyo y todos los alrededores, próximamente se van a iniciar trabajos de mejora en la cúpula y el recinto de los Baños.

Al mismo tiempo, el Ayuntamiento ha solicitado permisos a las Consejerías de Cultura y de Medio Ambiente para realizar una intervención de regeneración integral en toda la zona.

En la reunión de hoy, Guzmán Ahumada ha adelantado las modificaciones de ordenanzas que el equipo de gobierno prepara y que va a llevar al próximo pleno. Entre estas, destaca la reducción de un 50% en las licencias de apertura a emprendedores que provengan del desempleo, las ayudas económicas previstas para la creación de empresas que tendrán medidas específicas para las mujeres y los emigrantes retornados, y la reducción del impuesto de plusvalía en los casos derivados de herencias.

El encuentro de esta mañana está enmarcado en una serie de reuniones que viene manteniendo el equipo de gobierno para mantener informada a la oposición sobre los proyectos en los que está trabajando.

El Concurso de Fotografía del III Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz contará en el jurado con los fotógrafos Mariano Vargas y Fernando Bayona El Festival Nuevo Cine Andaluz de Casares estrena en su tercera edición un concurso de fotografía. Una actividad paralela que tendrá como temática el Cine, entendido de una forma genérica y totalmente libre: una escena basada en una película, algún objeto o edificio relacionado con el cine, o una composición que tenga a juicio del autor carácter cinematográfico.

Los participantes deberán acreditar ser andaluces o estar afincados en Andalucía.El plazo de inscripción estará abierto hasta el próximo 14 de mayo.

El premio para este primer Concurso de Fotografía tiene una asignación económica de 1000 €. En el jurado están integrados, además de miembros del

Colectivo PhotoEstepona que han colaborado en la elaboración de las bases de este concurso, otros fotógrafos de reconocido prestigio como Mariano Vargas o Fernando Bayona.

Entre las obras presentadas a

concurso el jurado seleccionarán 30 que formarán parte de la exposición que se inaugurará durante la semana de celebración del Festival en Casares, y posteriormente recorrerá diversos espacios expositivos.

La Liga de Futbol 7 finaliza este sábado con la victoria de Casares Chico

A falta de la última jornada de la liga de Futbol-7, que se juega el próximo sábado, Casares Chico ya tiene asegurado el campeonato y Green Team el puesto de subcampeón. Por su parte los casareños de Simblanka F.C. son lo que tiene más opciones de llevarse el título de mejor equipo del torneo.

La jornada comienza a las 10:00

h., con los encuentros Casares Chico - Amibos de Valle y Activa Deportes - Green Team.

La competición ha estado organizada por la Concejalía de Deportes del Ayuntamiento de Casares, y ha contado con 3 equipo de Casares: Casares Chizo, El Cuartel y los Simblanka F.C., y otror tres de fuera: ActivaDeportes de Tesorillo, Amibos del Valle de Benarrabá y Greem Team de Estepona.

Finalizada esta liga el próximo lunes comienza un campeonato de Fútbol Sala que se jugará en el polideportivo de la Huertezuela los lunes, martes y jueves de 20 a 22 horas.

Organizada por jóvenes de Casares con apoyo de la Concejalía de Deportes en esta nueva liga participan 6 equipo locales en los que se han integrado 60 jóvenes mayores de 15 años.

Mariano Vargas (San Fernando, 1964), residente en Algeciras, es un referente indiscutible en la fotografía erótica nacional e internacional, lo que atestiguan los diversos premios internacionales de temática erótica que ha recibido o que la reconocida editorial Taschen lo haya integrado en su lista de los 100 fotógrafos eróticos del siglo XX. Sus composiciones, ajenas a las modas, retratan escenas propias de su particular universo onírico donde aúna una técnica impecable con un elegante y turbador erotismo que mezcla tradición renacentista y contemporaneidad.

Fernando Bayona (Montizón, 1980) desarrolla su trabajo entre Granada y Madrid. Licenciado en Bellas Artes en Granada, encamina su carrera tras un master en fotografía y diseño visual en la NABA de Milán.

Sus trabajos han sido expuestos en numerosos centros expositivos y ferias internacionales, y distinguidos en premios nacionales e internacionales como el prestigioso SONY World Photography Awards, en 2011. Su obra artística, de excelente factura, plantea escenas grupales de gran poder narrativo en el que se tratan temas tan variados como la violencia, el sexo, la pasión o la represión, siguiendo líneas argumentales inspiradas en los evangelios, el mundo del circo o los cuentos infantiles.

The III New Andalucian Film Festival photography competition will feature photographers Mariano Vargas and Fernando Bayona in the jury The III New Andalucian Film Festival will showcase a photography competition during this edition. The theme will be the generic and completely free interpretation of ‘cinema’ through a scene based on a film, any object or building related to cinema, or a composition which the author considers to be cinematic.

If you are a British citizen living abroad, you can apply to be an overseas voter.

You must have been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years and be eligible to vote in UK Parliamentary general elections and European Parliamentary elections.

If you were too young to register when you left the UK, you can still register as an overseas voter.

You can do this if your parent or guardian was registered to vote in the UK, as long as you left the UK no more than 15 years ago.

Nicole King and TV programme Marbella Now are holding a free summit on Tuesday 5th of April at Laude International College San Pedro. La delegación de Fiestas, dirigida por Alba Jiménez, informa que se abre el plazo para optar a Reina, Dama y Míster para la feria de Agosto.

Las Bases por las que se han de regir la elección de las Reinas y Damas, tanto en su modalidad infantil como juvenil de la Feria de Agosto de 2016, así como las de Míster son las siguientes: Podrán presentarse a dicho concurso, candidatos empadronados en el Municipio de Manilva, ya sea a título personal o representante de cualquier entidad cultural, recreativa, vecinal, etc.

Las candidatas deberán tener cumplidos los 10 años de edad, en el caso de las infantiles y 18,19,20 y 21 años en el caso de las juveniles; ambas deben inscribirse acreditando fotocopia del D.N.I y certificado de empadronamiento. Para el caso de los Míster deberán igualmente tener cumplidos los 18,19, 20 y 21 años y deberán inscribirse utilizando el mismo procedimiento que en el apartado anterior.

A partir del día 9 de marzo, y hasta el 6 de Abril a las 15:00 horas, estará abierto el plazo de inscripción Durante el cual podrán presentar solicitudes todas aquellas entidades o candidatos interesados.

Las personas elegidas serán, en el caso de la modalidad de reina y damas infantiles, 3 damas y una reina; en el caso de las juveniles, serán elegidas cuatro personas con los títulos de: 1 reina y 3 damas; Para el caso de Míster, los títulos otorgados serán: Míster Elegancia, Míster Simpatía y Míster Manilva 2016.

El Jurado que participará en la Elección de las Damas y Reina será aprobado por la Delegación de Fiestas, y estará compuesto por el Presidente y cuatro personas más como vocales designados por el Ayto.

De Manilva. Todos ellos tendrán voz y voto en dicha elección.

En caso de empate entre dos candidatas el voto del presidente será considerado doble.

Dicho Jurado realizará una valoración de los candidatos, atendiendo los conocimientos y aptitudes demostradas durante el concurso, la actitud que presente y todas aquellas peculiaridades que le sean útiles para determinar a las tres Damas y Reina de la Feria, en ambas modalidades, así como a los míster.

La elección de reina y damas infantiles se hará mediante un sorteo público donde participarán las propias candidatas. Cada candidata extraerá un papel de la

urna donde se le indicará si ha sido elegida o no.

La Elección de la Reinas y Damas, en sus dos especialidades y el concurso de Míster se celebrará el día 16 de abril, pudiendo llevar cada uno de ellos la indumentaria que crean oportuna sin que exista ninguna obligatoriedad. El lugar de celebración del acto se anunciará con tiempo suficiente al desarrollo del mismo.

Los premios que se otorgarán serán un traje de flamenca para cada una de las tres Damas elegidas y Reina en la modalidad, tanto de infantil como de juvenil. Este traje será la indumentaria que deberán lucir el día de la Coronación de las mismas en la Feria de Agosto, así como en los distintos actos que han de participar, los cuales serán comunicados previamente. En el caso de los ganadores al título de Míster, el premio consistirá en 100€ para gastos de vestuario.

There are two categories for the Feria Queens: Infantiles, 10 year girls; Juveniles, girls aged 18, 19, 20 or 21. Misters must also be aged 18, 19, 20 or 21.

Entry is open until 3 pm on April 6th and applications should be submitted at the Delegación de Fiestas, situated in Plaza Martín Carpena (next to the football ground in Manilva) accompanied by a passport size photo, a copy of DNI or passport and current padron certificate.

There will be one Queen and three Ladies-in-Waiting chosen in both categories, and for the men there will be elections for Mister Elegant, Mister Congenial and Mister Manilva 2016.

The elections will be held on Saturday, 16th April when the ‘Infantiles’ will be selected by lottery.

The ’Juveniles’ and ‘Misters’ will be chosen by a panel of judges.

The winners will be given a flamenco dress, whilst the Misters will be given a 100€ to spend on clothes.

The winners will be expected to carry out various duties during the Summer Feria which will be held from 10th to 14th August, 2016.

Foreign Residents Department to offer new liaison service with National Police for documentation purposes From the 11th of April you will be able to get fully informed and professional assistance for free for any kind of application such as Residence, NIE or None Residence Certificates etc., from the Foreign Resident Department office in the Castle in Castillo. They will keep on file all the necessary application and tax forms, where applicable, and further help you with filling everything and make the final appointment for you to go to the National Police station in Estepona to carry out your application. The one and only thing this department won't be able to do for you, is to go with you to the appointment.

department office manager for Manilva, has recently completed a training course with the National Police Extranjeria division in Estepona.

Dean Tyler Shelton, the councillor for Foreign Residents in Manilva, stated that the main intention of this service is to help cut down on the amount of wasted trips people have to make to carry out what should be a simple transaction.

"In so many cases we are reliably informed by both applicants and the National Police that it can take up to as many as five trips to the Police station for people that are unprepared" stated Councillor Shelton, "this in turn leads to

wasted police time, longer queues, and a very annoyed and frustrated member of the public.

By us providing this service it should cut the trips down to a maximum of two trips, one to present the application and the other to collect the required document."

Lastly, Dean wants to publicly convey his appreciation and thanks to the National Police force in Estepona for providing invaluable support and assistance in this matter project.

Roadrunner Leisure SL launched their new leisure equipment hire business on Saturday 19th March.

Fiona Callander and Wendy Coles are co-owners of Roadrunner Leisure, a new venture to Puerto de la Duquesa. Two determined, or it could be said that 'too' determined women, set about fulfilling a common passion to have a business which was fun, would interact with people and above all make some money. Well it's all about being honest.

With a wealth of experience between them in business, finance and customer focus, they set about their plans.

At the launch, which was extremely well attended, Fiona said: “Wendy and I have been and continue to be overwhelmed by the level of support we have received.

Thank you to all our friends for their encouragement and for coming today and helping us celebrate.

Thank you also to the many friends who have helped us in the last couple of weeks and also to the many tradesmen who offered their time to sort out some issues.

I decided on Puerto Duquesa and purchased ‘The Bar’ July 2015 and landed in the middle of summer with my Brother Stuart to start our new life in business here, which has given knowledge in this area for business opportunities.

In the Bar throughout the summer we were asked frequently by our customers where they could hire bikes and it became evident that this could potentially be a good business as there was nowhere in the Port hiring bikes.

Fiona and I got together and coupled with Fiona’s idea’s we saw an opportunity of which Roadrunner Leisure SL was born.

Esta mes inician los talleres dentro del programa Venus en Marte's Esta mes se pone en marcha el programa de talleres por iniciativa de la delegación de la Mujer bajo el nombre de Venus en Marte’s.

Como anunció hace unos días la edil responsable del área, Patricia Recio, espera que las mujeres de la localidad participen en estas interesantes propuestas que se prolongarán durante todo el año.

El mes de abril traerá a este espacio un taller de autoestima. El día 26 se pone en marcha “Todo empieza por mi”, en el que las féminas conocerán técnicas que ayudan a las mujeres a conectar con ellas mismas, estableciendo una nueva relación con su yo más íntimo.

El mes de mayo le tocará el turno a la Bioguía y vida interior.

A través de este taller se darán a conocer remedios caseros, nutrición y cosmética natural.

Además se desarrollará una sesión de relajación y habrá una introducción breve y práctica de

mindfulness.

En junio nos espera un taller de estética práctica. Durante septiembre uno relacionado con las mujeres autónomas, mujeres autosuficientes.

In May there will be a guide to biology and inner life. Home remedies, nutrition and natural cosmetics will all be covered. In addition a relaxation session will take place and there will be a brief introduction and practice of mindfulness.

In June the workshop will touch on aesthetic practice. September’s will relate to self-employed, selfsufficient women.

October will be dedicated to women entrepreneurs and November to self-defense.

On December 13 the programme will officially end with a retrospective exhibition of photography of the most outstanding images from all these months.

IVTM Vehicle Road Tax now due The Patronato de Recaudación, Malaga Province’s revenue collection agency, has announced that the payment period for the IVTM vehicle road tax is now open.

Vehicle owners have until 20 May to pay their annual vehicle tax, notification of which they should

have received in the post. This can be paid at any of the banks listed on the payment notification, if you haven’t received your notification this can be obtained from the Patronato office next to the police station in Manilva.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha sacado a licitación la rehabilitación del edificio municipal del mercado de abastos para su explotación con uso de hostelería o de venta de productos como mercado gourmet. El concejal adscrito al área de Comercio, José Antonio Vílchez, ha destacado que el objetivo del Consistorio es renovar y fomentar la actividad en este recinto porque “la ubicación del mercado de abastos es inmejorable, ya que se encuentra en pleno casco antiguo de la ciudad, por lo que creemos necesario darle una nueva imagen y renovar sus instalaciones para favorecer y revitalizar la actividad comercial en la zona”.

El edil ha señalado además, que este proyecto se complementa con la mejora, puesta en valor y embellecimiento de todo el entorno donde se ubica el

mercado de abastos con la iniciativa 'Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol', que ha supuesto la eclosión comercial y turística de la zona. Por tanto, ha señalado que este proyecto será “el colofón” a la revitalización que se ha experimentado en los últimos años.

Las empresas que opten al concurso deberán seguir las especificaciones técnicas elaboradas por los técnicos municipales para la rehabilitación del edificio, situado en la céntrica calle Villa. De esta manera, y debido a la proximidad de la torre del Reloj que es un Bien de Interés Cultural del municipio, las obras no podrán exceder el volumen que tienen en la actualidad. Además, deberán conservar los elementos de la edificación actual que tienen interés tradicional o histórico. La remodelación tampoco podrá incluir ninguna instalación en

el subsuelo debido a que es una zona altamente protegida por los restos arqueológicos. Por otro lado, se valorará a la empresa que presente en su proyecto mejoras en el entorno.

La empresa concesionaria podrá explotar el edificio durante 20 años y deberá abonar al Ayuntamiento un canon mínimo anual de 9.412,20 euros más 1.976,56 euros de IVA. No obstante, se valorará aquellas ofertas que presenten un canon superior. El pliego contempla, también, que los actuales comerciantes que ocupan el mercado tendrán derecho de preferencia para instalarse en la futura explotación. Las proposiciones se presentarán en horario de 9 a 14 horas en la Tesorería del Ayuntamiento, sita en el edificio Puertosol en el plazo de 15 días naturales a contar desde la publicación del anuncio de licitación.

Estepona Town Hall has invited tenders to renovate the municipal indoor market located in Calle Villa, in the shadow of the Torre del Reloj.

The aim is to see the current food market upgraded into a restaurant or gourmet market in keeping with the improvements already made in this area. According to the Councillor for Commerce, José Antonio Vilchez, “the old market is in an unbeatable location in this historic part of town, and so it needs a new image and upgrade to be an asset to the commercial activity in the area”.

Companies wishing to put in a tender must follow the strict technical specifications set out for the project, given its proximity to the Torre del Reloj, and must also

preserve elements of the current building which are of traditional or historical importance. No excavations may be carried out either due to the archaeological importance of the area.

The successful bidder will gain the concession to operate the site for 20 years and must pay a minimum annual fee to the Town Council of 9,412.20 plus iva.

The specification also requires that the current market traders have the option to participate in the future activities on the site.

Interested parties have 15 calendar days from the publication of the contract notice to present their proposals at the Treasury Office in the Puertosol building in Estepona Port.

El Ayuntamiento embellecerá la ciudad con 120.000 plantas más tras duplicar la producción del vivero municipal El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa de que los operarios de Parques y Jardines han comenzado a colocar las 120.000 plantas que embellecerán las zonas verdes municipales durante los meses de primavera y verano. El teniente alcalde del área Sociocultural y Servicios, Blas Ruzafa, ha señalado que esta actuación se realizará con especies del vivero municipal, que ha conseguido duplicar su producción anual tras las obras de mejora efectuadas en sus instalaciones.

El edil ha explicado que durante el mes de abril se colocarán 40.000 ejemplares y durante los meses de mayo y junio otras 80.000 unidades de plantas de temporada, de manera que los jardines ofrecerán su mejor imagen de cara a la temporada alta turística. A ese respecto,

Ruzafa considera que la mejora y el embellecimiento de las zonas verdes contribuyen a consolidar el proyecto 'Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol'. Además de la plantación que se efectuará durante los próximos tres meses, el Consistorio tiene previsto colocar otras 120.000 plantas para la temporada otoñoinvierno.

En ese sentido, el responsable

municipal ha añadido que el objetivo del equipo de gobierno es que la ciudad disponga de unos de los jardines públicos “más importantes de España”, por lo que las plantaciones se efectuarán tanto en las principales avenidas, paseo marítimo y plazas del casco urbano, como en las zonas del extrarradio.En total, se prevé intervenir en casi 390.000 metros cuadrados de superficie.

The plants have been grown in the council's own nurseries which has

doubled it its annual production thanks to improvements made at the facilities.

This seasonal planting will ensure that Estepona presents its best image as the peak tourism season approaches, and will cement its

place as 'Estepona - The Garden of the Costa del Sol'.

The nurseries have already begun propagating some 120,000 plants which will be ready for this year's autumn and winter season.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa de que el Museo Arqueológico Municipal ha superado las 27.000 visitas desde que abrió sus puertas en marzo de 2013. El concejal adscrito al área de Patrimonio Histórico, José María Guerrero, ha señalado que el 40 por ciento de los visitantes registrados son extranjeros, mayoritariamente ingleses, alemanes y escandinavos, lo que “pone de manifiesto el interés que despierta la arqueología y la historia en los turistas”.

El Museo Arqueológico Municipal, que exhibe más de

400 piezas, dispone de cuatro salas que comprenden diferentes periodos históricos.

En concreto, la sala 1 está dedicada a los primeros pobladores, los navegantes fenicios y la conquista romana, la sala 2 se centra en el esplendor del Imperio Romano, mientras que la sala 3 comprende el periodo que va desde el Imperio Bizantino al Califato Omeya. Por último, la sala 4 está dedicada a objetos y restos de cuando Estepona fue una medina islámica y el patio central exhibe piezas pertenecientes a épocas posteriores.

Estepona's Archaeological Museum opened its doors in March 2013, and since then has received over 27,000 visitors, 40 percent of whom are foreigners, mostly British, Germans, and Scandinavians.

The Municipal Archaeological Museum, which displays more than 400 pieces, has four rooms comprising different historical periods.

Specifically, Room 1 is dedicated to the first settlers, the Phoenicians and the Roman conquest, Room 2 focuses on the splendour of the Roman Empire, while Room 3 comprises the period from the Byzantine Empire to the Umayyad Caliphate. Finally, Room 4 is devoted to objects and remains from when Estepona was an Islamic medina and the central courtyard exhibit pieces from later periods.

El Ayuntamiento reparte 70.000 entradas gratuitas a los empadronados para visitar el Parque Selwo Aventura

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona repartirá un total de 70.000 entradas para que los ciudadanos empadronados en la ciudad puedan visitar gratuitamente las instalaciones del parque Selwo Aventura. Las invitaciones son posibles gracias a un acuerdo de colaboración firmado entre el Consistorio y Parques Reunidos, la empresa responsable del recinto, según ha explicado el alcalde, José María García Urbano.

El regidor ha señalado que Selwo Aventura se ha convertido en uno de los enclaves símbolos de la localidad y “de visita obligada para los turistas, ya que es uno de los mejores parques de animales de Andalucía”. En ese sentido, ha indicado que el Parque creó un verdadero foco de atracción turística y de creación de empleo;

se ha convertido en una de las principales ofertas de ocio del municipio y ha subrayado que “nos ayuda a diferenciarnos de otros destinos turísticos”.

La directora del Parque Selwo Aventura, María José Marañón, que ha hecho entrega al alcalde de las entradas, ha animado a los ciudadanos a que conozcan estas instalaciones, que están “vivas y siempre con novedades”. Cuentan con más de un millón de metros cuadrados de extensión y más de 2.000 animales procedentes de distintos continentes viviendo en semilibertad.

Las entradas se podrán recoger en el Ayuntamiento de Estepona, en el edificio Puertosol o en las instalaciones municipales ubicadas en la plaza Blas Infante.

Selwo presents 70,000 free tickets to Estepona residents Estepona Town Hall has taken receipt of 70,000 entrance tickets to Selwo Aventura Nature Park for distribution amongst local residents registered on Estepona’s Padron register.

This is part of an agreement which has run annually since the park opened and was part of the original planning consent.

Selwo Aventura is a unique animal, nature and adventure park, located in Estepona. More than 2,000 animals from across the whole Planet live in this huge terrain, in conditions similar to those of their natural habitat, animals such as elephants, Bengal tigers, giraffes,

white rhinoceros, lions… and Kanvar, the only Asian elephant to be born in Spain. The visitor gets to see the animals up close as part of a tour which takes place partly on foot and partly in all terrain lorries.

Selwo Adventure has a variety of adventure activities such as the longest zipwire in Europe, camel rides or the Path of the Hanging Bridges.

by Guardia Civil officers during an operation to smash a drug ring smuggling hashish into Spain from

Morocco by helicopter.

Police also seized a ton and a half of hashish, along with 220,000 euros in cash, a truck and two helicopters.

The Felipe VI Theatre has published its programme for the new season The new season of performances got under way in March with an acoustic concert by the pop rock group Revolver.

On April 2 it is the turn of the singer David de Maria from Jerez, who is currently on tour with his latest album “Séptimo Cielo”, out on April 1. Fans of Spanish copla will be in for a treat on April 9 when two of its greatest exponents, Joana Jiménez and Antonio Corté, unite to present the musical spectacular “Alma de Copla” (Soul of Copla).

Impuestos en la compraventa de una vivienda En Andalucía, casi un tercio de las compraventas son llevadas a cabo por un extranjero. Málaga y, en particular Manilva, ha visto crecer su población de extranjeros en los últimos años.

Cuando dos particulares se disponen a comprar una vivienda, deben tener en cuenta que deberán pagarse una serie de impuestos por la transmisión de la propiedad.

Se debe tener en cuenta los impuestos que hay que pagar en una compraventa para aprovisionarlo a la hora de descontarlo del precio de la transacción.

PAGO CORRESPONDE AL COMPRADOR/A:1. Impuesto De Transmisiones Patrimoniales: Cada vez que se produzca una transmisión deberá pagarse el ITP. Este impuesto es cedido por las CCAA y tiene que presentarse a los 30 días de la celebración de la compraventa. Se calcula sobre el precio de venta, Como regla general se aplica el 8% de los primeros 400.000€ del precio venta.

TAX CORRESPONDING TO BUYER:1. “IMPUESTOS DE TRANSMISIONES PATRIMONIALES” (ITP) - This tax is payable whenever a second hand property changes hands whether by sale or inheritance. It is charged by the autonomous region, (CCAA), in which the property is situated and is generally calculated at a rate of 8% of sale prices up to 400,000€. If the selling price is higher other increased percentages are applied to the difference. It should be paid within 30 days of the signing of the purchase deed by the buyer.

2. VAT +ITP - In the case of the purchase of a new property when the buyer is the first occupier the tax charged would then be VAT, which is calculated at a rate of 10% of the sale price of the property and in addition 1.5% ITP would also be applied.

There will also be live music to create a festival atmosphere, workshops and games and activities for the kids from Marbella nursery Coleta, all set in the beautiful Urban Allotments at Arboretum. Visitors will also have a chance to learn about Arboretum, with guided tours and information.

This Spring Fair will be raising funds for charity Arboretum. To attend the fun day is free of charge but donations are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring a book to donate and the donated books will be on sale to raise funds for this fantastic environmental charity.

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva The Shop is Open for Business At the moment thaere are plenty of road and building works in Estepona and one of them is having an effect on the charity shop Age Concern runs in calle Zaragoza, Estepona. This is the rebuilding of 'Egg Square' to make an underground car park. The shop is still reachable on foot, and by car from Avenida Andalucia. If calle Zaragoza is, as is rumoured, also refurbished reaching the shop may become more difficult â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but not impossible! We are still open for business and require more donations to keep the quality of items on sale at a high standard.

ICE Club members enjoy a trip back in time ICE club members’ memories may go back a long way, but none go back quite to prehistoric times! So it was an excursion into unknown territory when a party of about 50 travelled the steep and winding road to Ronda on March 23rd to visit Finca Algaba, a scientific project which is in the process of reconstructing a Neolithic settlement typical of those which have been found in Andalucía and which date back 5000 years. On the rather chilly and windswept hillside members were introduced to the flora and fauna, village culture and farming methods of the era. The guide and her translator explained how to make tools and pots to kill, skin and cook animals, how to construct a dolmen, how to grind corn, how to mix paints, and how to keep warm inside a hut made of mud and thatch. It was a fascinating insight into prehistoric life in a beautiful, unspoilt location,

but somehow the lure of the 21st century restaurants and shops of Ronda was even more attractive, and that was where the rest of the day was spent. Many thanks to Wilma for organising such an enjoyable visit.

MĂĄlaga â&#x20AC;&#x201C; La Concepcion Botanical Gardens

I

n the 19th Century the Marquis of Casa Loring built a country house and planted the gardens with tropical and sub tropical flora from America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. In 1943 it was declared a historical and artistic garden. In 1990 it was purchased by Malaga City Council and opened to the public in 1994. Since then the gardens have been developed, the last portions being opened

to the public in 2009. There are routes within the park suitable for everybody. Some are suitable for wheelchairs, some for those who enjoy a short stroll and the forest walk is best undertaken in good shoes or trainers. Altogether there are over 4 kilometers of paths and tracks to explore.

Throughout the park there are benches and picnic areas and there is a restaurant with service

areas near the entrance. This is a day out that can be enjoyed by every member of the family.

There are two times in the year when the gardens are at their best, autumn and spring after heavy rain.

In autumn you may expect to see some flowering trees and exotic ground plants from the jungles of South America and Africa whilst in spring the wisteria and water plants are at their best.

In the pools the water lilies are flowering and the magnificent wrought iron pergola alongside the Loring mansion is enveloped in blue Wisteria.

In the middle section of the park a stream has been diverted into a series of pools and streams that cascade down the hill in a natural defile planted with monstera deliciosa, strelitzia, small palms and other plants normally found on a sun dappled jungle floor. The result is a lush green panorama with occasional bursts of vivid reds and oranges. Rising through them are various species of ficus, many with intricately columned and twisted trunks and exposed roots providing a striking architectural framework.

Further up the hill the trees become thinner and you emerge onto a Mediterranean sun scorched slope with native species such as ipomea and every colour of bindweed and dog rose vying for attention. At the western end of this area cactus from all over the world find a hospitable environment to thrive.

Slightly lower than the cactus

garden are the formal gardens.

A Roman style circular pergola stands at one end of a long pool with stately, slender Cyprus trees providing an avenue of view over the whole of Malaga city. The hillside below is ablaze with bougainvillea and the banks are covered with fragrant blue rosemary and other herbs.

The eastern end of the park is a complete contrast. This area was originally the orchard supplying the estate and there are still orange,

lemon and pomegranate trees, some nearly 200 years old and still flowering and fruiting.

The remainder of this part is devoted to trees from all over the world. A tall, exotic Erythrina crista-galli from Uruguay has an umbrella shaped crown covered in orange flowers similar to a lily. The first flowers actually appear before the leaves to attract the first of the new seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s insects. Normally conservative explorers, seeing this tree for the first time, called it the Cockspur Coral Tree in a rare burst of poetic exuberance.

Nearby is an equally exotic Bauhinia from the Chinese Himalayas with huge pink flowers similar to an hibiscus but much more delicate and with a very pale green leaf.

Not for nothing is it known as the Orchid Tree.

Returning to the centre sections you can cool off walking in the shade of 10 metre high stands of black bamboo, each stem is an ebony black wand with a tuft of green leaves at the tip. Nearby is the more common golden bamboo that can grow at the rate of 1 centimetre per day.

Cambridge Global Payments Autumn in the Botanical Garden

B

efore even out of the car in the car park you will see towering over the dividing wall, an unusual tree in full flower, a succulent, deciduous, flowering tree from Argentina and Brazil. The Chorisia has a fleshy trunk and branches with huge thorns to ward off any animal likely to consider it a meal.

The flowers are large funnel shaped and in shades of pink and white.

Inside the gardens, luxuriant after the rains, it resembles wandering through a jungle with tall palms and bare trunked exotic trees and their high branches, closely planted beneath with plants normally found on the jungle floor, there is a second unusual flower near a 12 foot high poinsettia with its brightly coloured bracts, a creamy coloured flower on a Monstera deliciosa.

ne article can only give a taste of the plant treasures that you will encounter at every turn of the path.

For adults the gardens are a place of wonder and the nearest most will get to a jungle without donning a pith helmet and taking up a machete. For children it is a

Between these treasures there is a host of flowering mid level shrubs, all striving to find a little ray of sunshine, including the spectacular Erythrina or Coral Tree, and a lovely double flowered, deep red Hibiscus.

Back to ground level there are any number of more common flowering plants and a favourite on this visit, a perfect specimen of a Strelitzia.

How to get there

Drive to Malaga on the A7. Take the A45 signposted Antequerra. The turnoff is signposted after about 1 kilometre. Drive back under the A45 to a roundabout where you take the last turning on your right.

The car park is about 1/2 kilometre further.

Sterling has remained under pressure in recent times, hitting fresh lows against the Euro and Dollar on a regular basis. In February, we saw it have the worst day in six years against the US Dollar, also hitting a 7-year low of 1.40, possibly eyeing the 1.35 lows we saw back in 2009. To beat those, you have to go back decades. Against the European currency, losses have been similarly catastrophic, wiping out the gains made in 2015, which was Sterling’s best year against the Euro, boasting a high of nearly 1.45, which now feels a lifetime away, not merely a handful of months.

So we must first analyse what has gone wrong for the UK to see its currency under such sustained, heavy fire from all angles. GDP is solid, in fact better than most other major world economies, and significantly higher than the Eurozone. Unemployment is going down, and people’s take-home pay has increased by an annual average of 3% in recent times.

The only thing holding back the Pound (until recently) was the anaemic inflation number, which has remained persistently weak, fuelled by a declining oil price.

This has one benefit – if people’s earnings are going up, yet inflation is near zero, it means the general population have more disposable income, as the price of buying household goods is also not rising.

However, the downside to low inflation is that it stops a central bank, in this case the Bank of England (BoE) from raising interest rates and this is what fuels strength in a currency. Interest rate hike expectations have moved back to 2018 in the eyes of some analysts, so investors know they are going to get a poor return from British investments for the foreseeable future, thus they are moving money out of Sterling.

The new problem on our doorstep is the EU referendum, and

specifically, Boris Johnson. Boris’ announcement that he is joining the ‘leave’ camp has given them a figurehead, someone more palatable to the electorate than a George Galloway or Nigel Farage figure, and bookmakers slashed the odds of a Brexit down to 2/1 – the lowest they have ever been, with some opinion polls in newspapers now predicting that Britain will indeed leave the party.

This event on 23-June provides great political uncertainty, and we don’t have to look too far into history for how severe consequences can be when a country’s currency is faced with political turmoil. In the run up to the Scottish Independence Referendum, the Pound weakened by 3% against most majors on the news that Scotland was looking to break ties. In 2010, we had the first hung parliament in a general election for a century, and Sterling dropped by over 5% on the day after the result. Similarly, when the hung parliament was avoided in 2015, Sterling surged as investors took comfort from the fact there was going to be a stable government free of coalition infighting, regardless of whether or not they supported Cameron’s Conservatives.

As we get closer to decision day at the end of June, Sterling is likely to remain under pressure, and losses are likely to be greater against the Dollar than the Euro, which will also suffer to a small extent, as a Brexit would be bad for the continent too.

Exposición fotográfica de Amancay Dreckmann Pérez en la Casa de la Juventud de Estepona La Casa de la Juventud, sita en la Plaza de las Flores, acogerá desde el próximo día 1 de abril, a las 20:00 horas, una exposición de fotografía conceptual de Amancay Dreckmann Pérez.

La muestra, que lleva por título “Todos somos Estepona”, estará compuesta por un total de 11 obras en las que la artista capta el importante trabajo que muchas personas hacen por su ciudad, en su rutina diaria, y que pasa desapercibido a nuestros ojos; de esta forma “consigue darles su pequeño regalo”, manifiesta la artista, y podrá ser visitada hasta el 29 de abril en el horario habitual de la Casa de la Juventud de Estepona, de martes a viernes, de 09:00 a 13:30 y de 17:00 a 20:00 horas, y sábados de 10:00 a 14:00 horas, con entrada libre.

Amancay Dreckmann Pérez

Nació en Madrid el 2 de noviembre 1987, y poco después, su familia decidió trasladarse al sur de España, concretamente a Estepona.

Gracias su tío, gran fotógrafo aficionado, descubrió la fotografía siendo muy pequeña, y en 2005 comenzó sus estudios de fotografía en el IES Guadalpín de Marbella. Luego continuó en la Escuela de Arte de Granada, consiguiendo el título de Fotografía Profesional, y más tarde, la titulación Fashion Photo Challenge London.

Ganadora de diversos concursos nacionales, Londres le dio la primera oportunidad de exponer su obra en el famoso Teatro-café White Hard, y entre sus experiencias, también ha trabajado como reportera en el periódico “La Tribuna” de Marbella.

Mr Henderson’s Railway Mr Henderson’s Railway as it is known, more formally the Algeciras to Ronda line, was built at a time when Britain was a colonial power, her industry led the world and, as far as her industrialists, financiers and entrepreneurs were concerned, nothing was impossible.

In an age when it was considered a privilege to be born British and everybody else was somewhere further down the ladder the British accomplished extraordinary feats. One such feat was the Algeciras to Bobadilla railway, not just a project to build a railway line, it was a just one part of a plan to connect the disputed territory of British held Gibraltar to the outside world through, if not enemy then less than friendly territory, Spain.

‘Mr Henderson’s Railway’ is the story of a remarkable enterprise undertaken at the end of the 19th century by the British in Spain.

The railway connects Algeciras with Bobadilla through some of the most difficult terrain in the world. The stretch from Algeciras to Ronda is famous as much for its majestic scenery as for the engineering proficiency of the men who built the line. Once completed villages previously all but cut off from the outside world found new life and markets. The line and complimentary passenger ferry from Gibraltar to Algeciras also connected Gibraltar with the rest of Europe for the first time in 200 years an objective welcomed by the British but not always by the Spanish.

Brian’s HALO jump for charity Plucky (or mad) local resident, Brian Forgie, is setting off to Tennessee in the US to fulfill a lifelong dream of carrying out a HALO parachute jump. This technique is often employed by special forces and stands for High Altitude Low Opening and involves leaving the aircraft at a high altitude, in this case around 9.5 kms and freefalling for some two and a half minutes before opening the 'chute.

This is not an exercise to be undertaken lightly, only some 120 civilians have ever jumped from this height, and the facility in Tennessee is the only one to offer the opportunity to none military personnel. Some of the dangers include possibility of heart attack, in the rarified atmosphere Brian will reach speeds of up to 300 mph, that's more than double the terminal velocity expected at lower

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain weekly surgery The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm.

The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme.

If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy.

Estepona Floral Art Club Well Easter has been and gone and Estepona Floral Art Club are getting ready for their penultimate demonstration before the AGM when members will decide the future of their Club.

The next demonstration is April 19 when the Club look forward to welcoming back Jo Poulter who last visited the in 2012. Jo, who is based in Peterborough, is a very busy lady. She has her own floral design business which specialises in Weddings and events, why not have a look at her website, bespokebuds. com to see some of her wonderful designs. She has also been demonstrating for a few years and is regularly asked to return to Clubs. Jo has also competed at Chelsea and arranges flowers at Peterborough Cathedral in fact she is taking over the running of Peterborough Cathedral Flower arranging Guild.

Jo’s demonstration is on Tuesday April 19 starting promptly at 3 o’clock at Agro Jardin, Cancelada. Her demonstration is titled “Over the Rainbow” so there are going to be lots of lovely colours in the wonderful designs which Jo will create on stage.

Everybody is welcome, visitors fee is 10€.

Sadly Jo’s commitments in the UK mean she is unable to stay in Estepona so there won’t be a workshop this month.

How to safely remove a tick from your dog

Las garrapatas son uno de los inconvenientes más molestos y de miedo a llevar a su perro al aire libre. En algunos lugares, que son tan plagados que los perros regresan de un paseo de quince minutos con decenas de ellos.

Y no es cosa de risa. Hay muchos tipos de garrapatas y conllevan muchas enfermedades, no sólo la temida enfermedad de Lyme.

Otras enfermedades incluyen: • babesiosis • anaplasmosis • fiebre manchada de las Montañas Rocosas • tularemia Obviamente, usted no quiere estas cosas están encima su perro, pero que puede ser muy difícil sacarles de manera segura.

Y no creo que se irán solo por su cuenta.

Deer ticks feed a day or so faster than Lone Star ticks and American dog ticks.”

One of the biggest issues is that everyone has conflicting and unclear advice when it comes to tick removal.

They do mention that if part or all of the hypostome (the barbed parts of the tick that go into the skin) is what stays in, there is probably no risk for continued contamination.

What about all those old home remedies?

For decades people have used all sorts of creative ways to removes ticks, including fire, grease, soap and water, etc. LymeNetEurope. org says doing anything to “irritate” tick to get it to release on its own is a BAD IDEA.

Why?

“All methods that involve irritating the tick, potentially increase the chance that the tick produces extra saliva or vomits its stomach contents, which could contain pathogens.”

(LymeNetEurope. org).

Another popular way to remove a tick is to “twist” it off. There is even a “Tick Twister” tick remover.

The idea behind rotating the tick came from the misconception that ticks screw themselves into the skin and so you can remove by “unscrewing” them. However, ticks don’t do this. They do attach their hypostome, and the barbs can get stuck in the skin if you rotate the tick, but not always.

So what IS the best way?

The first thing to realize is that marketing is marketing and business is business. People selling tick removal kits are going to tell you theirs is the “safest, best, most effective, etc.” But that doesn’t mean it’s true.

LymeNetEurope.org says this: “Scientific research shows that tick removal with a fine point tweezers is one of the best methods, and in general the recommended method.

Such a tweezers is easy to handle and the chance of squeezing the tick is small.”

They make an important distinction here – be sure to use fine point tweezers and not the normal broad, flat tip tweezers because with the flat ones you run the risk of squeezing the tick (which could release more pathogens) and/or you could break the tick apart.

Moscow Ballet Ara Malikian "15" - Giselle The world famous Moscow Ballet will present a performance of Giselle, a masterpiece of romantic ballet, at La Linea's Palacio de Congresos on Tuesday 19 April from 8.30 pm. III Sabinillas Scooter Day

L

os entusiastas, del Club Scooterista de Sabinillas, aficionados a las Vespas y Lambrettas, en la colaboración con el Departamento Deportivo y Juvenil de Manilva, encabezado por Agustin Vargas, recientemente presentó el III Día de Scooter, que este año tendrá lugar el 23 de Abril.

El punto de quedada, al igual que en otros años, será en la gasolinera Repsol de la localidad, a las 10.00 de la mañana. Donde

habrá oportunidad de hacerse fotos con las motos de la localidad tanto como con las venidas del resto de Andalucía, otras partes de España y Gibraltar.

A las 11.00 se procederá con la ruta, en esta ocasión, nos dirigiremos a Sotogrande, pasando por San Martín del Tesorillo y finalmente, subiendo a Manilva, para finalmente, proceder con la comida de hermanamiento scooterista.

Después de este, la acción se

trasladará al Paseo Marítimo de Sabinillas, donde tendremos una tarde festiva, cargada de música, este año nos acompañarán dos bandas, Mentally Ska´d, banda de ska y reggae, afincada en el Norte de Málaga y The Lambrettas, desde el Reino Unido, venidos especialmente para esta ocasión.

Banda mítica de los 70, del revival mod, donde podremos escuchar tanto sus últimas canciones, como sus ya clásicos, incluyendo su hit "Poison Ivy".

Las bandas estarán acompañadas por los mejores DJ´s de la escena, pinchando sus vinilos para disfrute del público.

En este escenario se estará hasta las 23.00, posteriormente, la fiesta se traslada al hotel "La Mecedora", donde se podrá continuar disfrutando de la música y el baile hasta que los piés aguanten, los DJ´s amenizarán la velada con sus discos de northern soul, R&B, Motown, Trojan. Recordar que todas las actividades son gratuitas y que todo aquel que quiera acudir, es bienvenido.

anilva scooter enthusiasts Pist'n'Broke - Sabinillas Scooter Crew, in collaboration with Manilva's Sports and Youth Department, headed by Agustin Vargas, recently presented this year's III Sabinillas Scooter Day, to be held on Saturday 23 April.

The day kicks off at 10 am when all the scooteristas gather at the Repsol garage in the centre of Sabinillas where there will be plenty of photo opportunities and a chance to see the scooters. This year, there will be Vespas and Lambrettas from Cadiz, Jerez, Malaga and Marbella on show.

At 11 am the scooters head off on a ride out, taking in San Martin,Sotogrande, Manilva, and back to Sabinillas.

After a spot of lunch the action shifts

to the promenade in Sabinillas where there will be a free concert starting at 5 pm with Malaga ska, rocksteady and reggae outfit Mentally Ska'd. At 6 pm it is the turn of 70s mod revival stars 'The Lambrettas' who will be performing their latest tracks along with some old favourites including hits such as 'Poison Ivy', etc.

The bands will continue alternating sets until 11 pm when the party transfers to La Mecedora, on the main road between Sabinillas and Duquesa Port, where a number of DJs will keep you dancing to classic mod, northern soul, Motown, Trojan, hits until the early hours of the morning.

There will be snacks available and the concert and party are open to everyone.

The Fat Man of Europe!

One in four British adults is obese, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, prompting fears that the UK has become the “fat man of Europe”.

The UK has the highest level of obesity in Western Europe, ahead of countries such as France, Germany, Spain and Sweden, the 2013 report says.

Obesity levels in the UK have more than trebled in the last 30 years and, on current estimates, the obesity crisis will see almost three-quarters of men and two-thirds of women in the UK being overweight in 15 years, health experts have said.

researchers lay bare a problem “of enormous proportions” facing many countries over the next decade and a half.

Ireland leads the trend, with new figures to be presented on Wednesday to suggesting that 89% of men and 85% of women in the country will be overweight or obese by 2030.

In the UK, the comparable figures will be 74% for men and 64% for women, up from 70% and 59% respectively five years ago. The statistics for 57 countries are based on analysis of existing data for 2010 and projections which involved the UK Health Forum, an alliance of public interest and professional groups.

Obesity levels among children have also been rising during this period. 1 in 3 children in the UK are now overweight, while 1 in 5 is obese.

The cause of the rapid rise in obesity has been blamed on our modern lifestyles, including our reliance on the car, TVs, computers, desk-bound jobs and high-calorie food and drinks and the lack of physical exercise or daily movement.

“The UK is the ‘fat man’ of Europe,” writes Professor Terence Stephenson .

A person is considered overweight if they have a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29, and obese with a BMI of 30 and above.

Today’s obesity levels are more than three times what they were in 1980, when only 6% of men and 8% of women were obese.

Most people who become obese put on weight gradually between the ages of 20 and 40, but there is some suggestion that the path is set in early childhood.

“Overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults,” says Susan Jebb, professor of diet and population health at the University of Oxford.

SO! - What can we do?

Firstly, eat less!

Get out of your seat and get moving, walk somewhere, ditch the car, take up a sport or fitness class, enrol your kids in sports clubs, try doing things as a family, an old mantra of mine that has proven to words of wisdom, .

Our sedentary lives have become normal, we have normalised being unhealthy, being overweight is our number 1 health risk and it is affecting the health of our next generation and only WE can reverse this trend.

Most of us have no idea what it feels like to be really hungry, we couldn’t imagine sending our kids to school every day without at least a snack, well for many families along the coast, this is a daily occurrence. There are 40 children in Estepona alone that go all day until they eat a meal, and this meal is actually supplied by The Soup kitchen In Estepona.

Jojo France and Dorte Isolas under the guidance of The St George Charity are putting together various fund raising events to raise money for this appeal, one of which is the Family Fun Day on Sunday 24 April at Kiddibank, San Roque Club from 10 am to 2 pm.

25 teams of 4 people will compete in 12 challenges of fitness, mind and agility.

There will also be entertainment, live music, dancing, bar, cakes, barbecue, face painting etc. There will also be table top sales.

l Real Club Valderrama se ve mejor que nunca tras someterse a mejoras en anticipación al Open de España, que se celebrará del 14 al 17 de abril, organizado por la Fundación Sergio García.

El Real Club Valderrama se presenta mejor que nunca para el Open de España - Fundación Sergio García tras las últimas reformas.

Los jugadores disfrutarán de la nueva zona de prácticas de juego corto diseñada por Kyle Phillips y apreciarán la renovación de los tees y los bunkers para ponerlos al mismo nivel de excelencia que las calles y los greenes.

Se han podado muchos alcornoques para favorecer un juego más agresivo desde el rough y se ha instalado un sistema de riego de última tecnología, que no solo mejora las condiciones de juego, sino que optimiza el consumo de agua y el gasto energético.

Real Club Valderrama is looking better than ever after undergoing improvements in preparation for the Open de España, from April 14 to 17, hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

The iconic layout now boasts a state-of-the-art short-game practice area, designed by Kyle Phillips, and significant work has been done on the bunkers and tees on the course, bringing them up to the same high standard as the fairways and greens.

Many of the cork trees lining the course have been pruned, allowing more aggressive play from the rough, and a brand new hightech pumping system has not only improved playing conditions but has dramatically reduced water and energy costs.

Javier Reviriego, General Manager of Real Club Valderrama, said: “We are excited to stage on our course such a storied event as the Open de España, and we couldn’t have a better host than Sergio García, a great friend of Valderrama. Our maintenance team is making a big effort to have the course in top condition.”

In Category I, victories in the three legs were divided between Joseba Iraola (Demon Car), Cesar Rodriguez (BRC) and Christian Broberg (Radical). The latter being awarded overall victory by 2-3 ahead of second place Rodriguez, with Manuel Aviles (Demon Car) taking up third place on the podium.

In Category II Javier Villa (BRC)

said: “The hosting of the Open de España is a first class asset, not only for our tourism but for our sports promotion. At present, only around 14-15% of our golf tourists are Spanish, therefore we have a large margin of growth with regard to internal tourism.

“We are redesigning our promotion strategy, and we believe that the best way to attract golfing tourists is to show what we have.

This tournament is a step in the right direction, as Valderrama is synonymous with excellence.”

Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: “The Open de España is the second oldest tournament in Europe and represents Spain’s great contribution to golf in Europe and worldwide.
