Editorial Bueno, ha pasado otro mes y me encuentro de nuevo en el teclado para presentar la edición de The Resident de junio, un mes que tiene pinta de ser bastante movidito.

Vamos a empezar con el plato fuerte, y con esto me refiero al referéndum sobre la UE el 23 de junio. Una filosofía que me ha mantenido a flote a lo largo de los años es la de no preocuparme por las cosas que no puedo controlar, y ya que el Gobierno Británico me ha liberado de tener que tomar ninguna decisión sobre este tema, eso es exáctamente lo que voy a hacer. Aún mejor, de hecho, voy a adoptar una actitud positiva y esperar a ver qué sucede en la Costa una vez se haya tomado la decisión y todo el mundo pueda seguir con sus vidas.

Afortunadamente, en vez de estar pegado a la televisión esperando los resultados, será mejor que nos acompañes a una de las muchas fiestas de San Juan que se celebrarán por toda la costa el 23 de junio, ya que la gente celebra la llegada del verano con hogueras, música y baile hasta la madrugada.

Poco después del referéndum, será el turno de los españoles de intentar, por segunda vez en seis meses, elegir al mejor de lo peor en las elecciones generales. De nuevo, no puedo participar en estas elecciones, pero como dije antes, todo lo que puedo decir sobre el asunto es ¡buena suerte!

Y ahora las buenas noticias. Este verano tiene pinta de ser uno de los más exitosos de los últimos años a nivel de turismo, incluso parece que se superarán las cifras de récord del año pasado. Muchos turistas han elegido a España debido a la situación incierta y peligros potenciales de países como Turquía, Egipto y Túnez, lo que viene a demostrar que no hay mal que por bien no venga. Aquí en The Resident estamos deseando que llegue el verano y hemos hecho algunas mejoras en nuestro sitio web y mejorado la calidad del papel donde se imprime la revista, haciendo que sea más atractiva para lectores y anunciantes.

Y eso es todo. Espero que disfrutéis de la edición de este mes y ¡nos vemos el mes que viene!

Well another month has passed and I find myself at the keyboard again to introduce this month’s issue of The Resident, and what a month June promises to be.

So let’s begin with the elephant in the room, and by that I’m referring to the impending EU referendum on June 23. One philosophy that has stood me in good stead over the years is not to worry about things over which I have no control, and as the British Government has seen fit to disenfranchise me from this decision, that is exactly what I’m going to do. In fact better still I shall adopt a positive attitude and await the boom that will hit the Coast once a decision has been made and everyone can get on with their lives again.

Fortunately rather than glued to the television awaiting the results, you’d be better off joining in one of the many San Juan parties that will be taking place up and down the Coast on June 23 as people turn out to celebrate midsummer with bonfires, music and dancing into the early hours of the morning.

No sooner have we got the EU referendum out of the way, than it is the turn of the Spanish to try, for a second time in six months to pick the best of a bad bunch in a rerun of last year’s failed general election. Once again I will be sitting this one out, but I mentioned that in a previous whinge so all that is left for me to say on the subject is good luck!

So now on to the good news. The summer is already shaping up to be one of the busiest ever with last year’s record breaking tourism figures looking set to be beaten, with many holidaymakers choosing Spain over the uncertainties and potential dangers of places like Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, which goes to show every cloud does have a silver lining.

Here at The Resident we are also looking forward to the summer and have made a few improvements with a new look to our website and an upgrade to the quality of paper on which The Resident is printed, making it even more attractive to both readers and advertisers alike.

Con el verano, llegan las medusas

El verano ha comenzado, y llega la temporada del baño, pero a medida que el mar se calienta, también llega la amenaza de las medusas, que han estado causando problemas de la costa del Mediterráneo en los últimos años.

Existen numerosas razones por las que el número de medusas ha aumentado. El exceso de pesca ha llevado a la reducción de su depredador natural, el atún, y a una reducción del número de peces más pequeños que compiten con las medusas por el plactón con el que se alimentan.

El aumento de la temperatura del mar, junto con una reducción de las corrientes frías que llegan al mar desde los ríos, también ha provocado el aumento de esta plaga.

Estas medusas no son solo una molestia; ocasionalmente causan el cierre de las zonas de baño, suponiendo una seria amenaza para el sector turístico español.

Afortunadamente, aquí en España no tenemos que enfrentarnos a los tipos más

peligrosos de medusas, como la cubozoa y la avispa de mar, pero su picadura puede ser dolorosa y estropear un buen día en la playa.

La mayoría de las picaduras se producen cuando los bañistas entran, accidentalmente, en contacto directo con los tentáculos de la medusa. Las estructuras punzantes de los tentáculos se llaman nematocistos, que están cargados con glándulas de veneno que contienen tubos pequeños, huecos y afilados. Los tubos liberan las toxinas.

Los nematocistos se activan con el contacto físico directo. Cuando la piel humana entra en contacto con una medusa, el veneno se inyecta en las capas más externas de la piel, causando la reacción tóxica de una picadura típica.

La mayoría de las picaduras provocan erupciones cutáneas, que aparecen como un sarpullido doloroso, inflamado y rojo que pica. La erupción normalmente se limita a la zona de piel que entró en contacto directo con la medusa.

Qué hacer en caso de picadura Enjuaga la zona afectada con agua salada o con ninguna. NO enjuagues la zona afectada con agua potable, porque activa aún más los nematocistos y empeora la reacción.

Usando guantes protectores o pinzas, extrae los tentáculos que aún puedan estar en contacto con la piel de la víctima.

Un buen enjuague con vinagre de vino blanco desactivará los nematocistos no descargados y la toxina, y ayudará a aliviar los síntomas. Coloca un paño empapado en vinagre sobre la zona afectada (no frotes) durante 30 minutos más o menos. Es

una buena idea llevar una botella de vinagre y unas pinzas en tu bolso de playa, junto con otros artículos esenciales como la crema solar o el agua.

Debe administrarse además un analgésico antiinflamatorio, como el ibuprofeno.

Existen numerosos cuentos de viejas relacionados con el tratamiento de las picaduras de medusas, como el orinar sobre la zona afectada.

Se nos ha asegurado que esto no es solo ineficaz, sino también poco agradable, y puede ganarnos algunas miradas extrañas de los otros bañistas.

Summer heralds the jellyfish season Summer has begun, and the bathing season is upon us, but as the sea warms up so comes the threat of swarms of jellyfish, known as blooms, which have created problems along Mediterranean coasts in recent years.

There are a number of reasons for the increase in numbers, over fishing has led to a reduction in their natural predators such as tuna, as well as reducing the number of smaller fish which compete with them for the plankton on which they feed.

Rising sea temperatures along with a reduction in cold water flowing into the sea from rivers, has also led to an increase in these pests.

These jellyfish blooms are not merely an inconvenience, occasionally causing the closure of bathing areas, but a serious threat

to Spain’s tourist industry.

Fortunately here in Spain we do not have to cope with the more dangerous types of jellyfish such as the Box Jellyfi sh and the Sea Wasp, but stings can still be painful and spoil a good day on the beach.

Most stings occur when bathers accidentally come into direct contact with the tentacles of jellyfish. The stinging structures on the tentacles are called nematocysts, which are springloaded venom glands that contain small, hollow, sharp tubes.

The tubes release toxin.

The nematocysts are triggered by direct physical contact. When human skin comes into contact with a jellyfish, the poison is injected into the outermost layers of skin, causing the toxic reaction of a typical sting.

Most jellyfish stings result in skin eruptions, which appear as a painful, raised, red rash that itches.

The rash is usually limited to the area of skin that came into direct contact with the jellyfish.

Using protective gloves or tweezers, remove any tentacles still in contact with the victim.

La nueva y pionera planta de energía de las olas fue inaugurada oficialmente ayer, anunciando una nueva era en energías renovables en La Roca.

La nueva planta, construida por la empresa israelí Eco Wave Power, está ubicada en Ammunition Jetty en el lado oriental de Gibraltar, y ha sido descrita como la primera planta de energía de las olas de Europa conectada a una red eléctrica.

Pueden recogerse las entradas gratuitas para niños en el Ministerio de Cultura del Ayuntamiento, John Mackintosh Square (Piazza) desde el lunes 6 de junio entre las 10 y las 14:00 horas.

Las entradas gratuitas son válidas solo para la Entrada General. No hay entradas gratuitas para niños

para la zona VIP. Deberás demostrar en la oficina de entradas (con documentación original) que eres el padre/ madre o tutor legal del niño/ niños. El adulto también deberá presentar una entrada adquirida previamente para el festival.

Free GMF tickets for kids aged 12 and under Gibraltar's Culture Ministry has announced that children aged 12 and under will be allowed free entry into the Gibraltar Music Festival on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4 September. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Children’s free tickets can be collected from the Ministry of Culture at the City Hall, John Mackintosh Square (Piazza) as

from Monday 6 June between 10 am and 2 pm.

Free tickets are valid for the General Entry area only. There are no free children’s tickets for the VIP area.

You must be able to prove at the ticket office, (with original documentation), that you are the parent or legal guardian of the child/children as well as the age of the child/children. A previously

purchased valid entry ticket to the festival must also be produced at the ticket office by the parent or guardian.

Rotary Charity Car Run to the beautiful lakes of the Guadalhorce Valley

As one of its charity fund-raising events, the Rotary Club MarbellaGuadalmina has organized their third annual sponsored car run on Saturday 4th June. Departing from Marbella the run goes to the beautiful Guadalhorce valley, "The Lake District" of Andalucía, passing the famous "El Chorro" gorge and the newly constructed Camino Del Rey. The event will raise much-needed funds for the Hogar Betania Project, in La Línea de la Concepción, which provides food and accommodation for the local destitute of the La Linea area, one of Spain's designated

poorest areas. Hogar Betania feeds approximately 300 people in their soup kitchen every day.

They also arrange summer camps for children, take care of socially marginalized people, like single mothers in need, women who faced domestic violence and they provide shelter to the homeless, offering support to help them get back to a normalized life. The Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina has supported the charity for 2 years and recently raised nearly 10.000 euros for this same project during their annual Spring Garden Party.

The car run participation fee is 50€, half of which goes to Hogar Betania and the rest for lunch with wine and cool drinks. There is a pre-lunch stop at El Chorro for aperitifs (not included in the cost.)

Sotogrande Family Fun Day After last year’s very successful Family Fun Day Spring Fair our Primary Student Council would like to invite all family and friends of SIS and Fundamentals to a Family Fun Day Spring Fair on Saturday Jun 4th from 1.00 – 4.00pm.

This special day is one of our Primary Student Council main initiatives for this term and they have already started working hard in planning and preparing for it.

During the afternoon there will be an opportunity to take part in

many different organised activities and games, socialise and catch up with friends, listen to some performances from our primary students and enjoy some food and drink.

La Junta de Andalucía amplía 15 días más el plazo para la firma de la adjudicación de la pasarela que unirá Casares Costa con Sabinillas

The Junta de Andalucia extends the deadline for the signing of paperwork awarding the contract for the construction of the footbridge linking Sabinillas and Casares Costa

ras haber anunciado públicamente que se firmaría el 30 de mayo, la Junta de Andalucía traslada la fecha para la adjudicación de la obra de la pasarela sobre el río Manilva al 15 de junio.

El Consejo Rector del Plan Qualifica se reunía ayer con un orden del día en el que destacaba el nombramiento de interventor y tesorero, un paso necesario para poder adjudicar el proyecto del puente sobre el río Manilva, según dijo el pasado 17 de mayo la Delegada de Salud Monsalud Bautista, quien aseguró que la obra estaría terminada para este

verano.

Un día antes de la movilización vecinal del pasado 18 de mayo, en la que los vecinos unieron los municipios de Casares y Manilva a través de una cadena humana, la Delegada de Turismo de la JJAA en Málaga, Monsalud Bautista, anunciaba al alcalde y de forma pública que el 30 de mayo se firmaría la adjudicación de la obra. La firma no se ha efectuado, pero el alcalde de Casares, Pepe Carrasco ha explicado que el Consejero de Turismo, Francisco Javier Fernández, se ha comprometido a efectuar dicho trámite el 15 de junio.

Carrasco confía en que tras el nombramiento del tesorero e interventor, la Junta ya proceda a adjudicar la obra de la pasarela peatonal en la nueva fecha señalada. El alcalde ha mostrado toda su confianza en el compromiso del consejero, no sólo hacia el equipo de gobierno, sino hacia los vecinos, para que pronto esta unión a través del río sea una realidad.

Una vez adjudicada la obra, la Junta deberá realizar la contratación con la empresa adjudicataria para que puedan comenzar los trabajos.

Casares se promociona como destino turístico en Euroal, la Feria de Turismo de la Costa del Sol Casares participa desde esta mañana en el Salón Turismo de la Costa del Sol, EUROAL 2016, que se celebrara en el Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Torremolinos los días 2, 3 y 4 de junio.

Personal técnico de Turismo del Ayuntamiento ofrece información sobre el municipio a los visitantes en el stand de Casares, al tiempo que participa en mesas de trabajo con tour operadores de países de Europa, Asia y América Latina.

La previsión es mantener una decena de reuniones diarias para promocionar la visita a Casares dentro del recorrido de la Costa del Sol y estancias en alojamientos rurales del municipio.

Además, en esta edición el Ayuntamiento va a promocionar productos gastronómicos locales

Comienza la fase de evaluación de los proyectos presentados a los premios Blas Infante Desde el Ayuntamiento se está ofreciendo información de los proyectos presentados a todas las personas que quieran formar parte del jurado, que está abierto a todas las personas que lo deseen. Radio Casares comenzará a emitir a partir del próximo miércoles 1 de junio, una serie de programas especiales para dar a conocer a los vecinos algunos de los proyectos presentados por las distintas ONGs que concurren a los premios en esta edición. El objetivo es difundir la imprescindible labor que llevan

Finalizado el proyecto del tramo de la Senda Litoral que unirá en Casares el arroyo La Jordana con Estepona La Diputación de Málaga ha concluido la redacción del proyecto de un tramo de la Senda Litoral en Casares de 470 metros, entre arroyo La Jordana y el límite con Estepona.

El proyecto -realizado por la sociedad Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol- permitirá crear un sendero peatonal de tres metros de ancho, con elementos de protección y una zona de vegetación lineal autóctona.

Además, se recuperará una superficie importante de playa, de 2.672 metros cuadrados, actualmente ocupada por el paseo existente y rellenos de tierra y escollera. Y se adecuará el entorno con actuaciones de revegetación de praderas en playa de manera que se produzca una adecuada integración paisajística.

Para entregar la documentación

relativa a este proyecto, la vicepresidenta de la Diputación, Ana Mata, visitó el pasado lunes el Ayuntamiento de Casares donde se reunió con los tenientes de alcalde Antonia Pineda y Guzman Ahumada.

El presupuesto de licitación de este tramo de la Senda Litoral será de 241.806,63 euros. No obstante, antes de proceder a la contratación de las obras, el proyecto tendrá que recibir el visto bueno de la Delegación de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio de la Junta de Andalucía.

La Diputación de Málaga va a redactar también el proyecto de otro tramo de la Senda Litoral, cuyo trazado final aún está pendiente de concretar. En ambas actuaciones, la institución provincial sufragará el coste de las obras.

Radio Casares have begun broadcasting a series of programmes focusing on some of the projects submitted by the NGOs involved in this year's event.

Coastal footpath in Casares The Malaga Council has concluded the drafting of the project for a 470 m section of the coastal footpath in Casares between the Jordana stream and the border with Estepona.

The project, carried out by the Costa del Sol Tourism and Planning society, will create a three metre wide pedestrian path with structures to offer some shelter and an area of ​​native vegetation.

Working in Gibraltar but Living in Spain Thousands of people cross the border from Spain to Gibraltar every day to go to work. Many of these people feel that they are in a kind of “Limboland” because they are not fully part of either state’s systems. Even though they pay tax and social security to the Gibraltar government, they are not entitled to free education for their children, nor automatic free health care. If they do not pay tax and social security in Spain, they are not always entitled to the facilities in that country either.

Contrary to popular belief, the two countries do co-operate in many areas. Social security and health care are areas of great co-operation

between the two. They also have a reciprocal arrangement for income tax.

Each individual working and paying social security in Gibraltar can elect for those payments to be transferred to their local social security office in Spain. It is a fairly easy procedure, in that you go to the social security office in Gibraltar and ask to fill in the form to transfer your social security payment to the seguridad social of your area of residence. The Spanish office then send confirmation of receipt of payments and issue you with a Spanish social security card.

You are then entitled to Spanish state health care, unemployment

benefit, sick pay etc, and once enough contributions have been made, the Spanish state pension.

Many people worry that if they do this, then they would not be entitled to any health care in Gibraltar should they have an accident or fall ill while at work or visiting Gibraltar. Gibraltar is part of the European Union’s health care system and once you have your Spanish social security card, you can go to your local officina de seguridad social and ask for a “Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea” which is produced on the spot once a check is made to ensure that your social security payments are up to date in Spain. This card is valid in all EU countries and Switzerland (including Gibraltar).

To be fully legal, if you live in Spain for more than 183 days in any one year, you should also make a tax return in Spain. Unless you are a high rate tax payer in Gibraltar then you should have no more tax to pay. All it will cost you is the Gestor’s fee for submitting your annual tax return.

As children grow it is important that we continue to foster these impulses and provide opportunities for charitable activities. The benefits of actively fostering these charitable urges are enormous.

Making a difference in someone’s life boosts self-esteem and encourages children to think of others.

It is easy to encourage children to help others and to incorporate such events into daily life. By creating a culture of giving in the home and setting the right example, children will be more likely to want to participate in charitable events outside of the home. Finding opportunities to give back to your local community, such as donating food or clothing, can help make giving a part of your child’s life.

At Mayfair International Academy we regularly involve our students in events related to charitable causes, as well as providing opportunities

We are the longest standing supporters of the Nyland Knight Charitable Foundation, a local charity that works with a school in The Gambia. Our students have raised funds for school supplies, collected books for the library, exchanged letters with the children and enjoyed talks by the founder of the charity.

Each year we also find local and

Last year our students participated in a sponsored walk to raise funds for Acción Contra el Hambre and also participated in a variety of sponsored activities, the funds from which were donated to the local charity Avoi.

La Coral de Manilva muestra su talento en el Concurso Música Viva La Coral de la Escuela Municipal de Música de Manilva asistió por segunda vez consecutiva al concurso “Música Viva 2016” celebrado en la Escuela de Música, Danza y Teatro de Roquetas de Mar. Nuevo servicio para la tramitación de documentos

partir de ahora la concejalía de Residentes Extranjeros ofrece información y asesoramiento profesional de forma gratuita para la obtención de documentos como residencias, NIE, certificados de residencia, etc..., desde su oficina en el Castillo.

A través de la citada área se podrán obtener todos los formularios de solicitud y tasas.

Además ayudarán a completar todo lo necesario y a concertar una cita en la comisaría de la Policía Nacional en Estepona para completar el proceso de solicitud.

La trabajadora municipal perteneciente a la delegación de Extranjeros, María Tomé, ha completado recientemente un curso de formación en la comisaría de Extranjería de la Policía Nacional de Estepona, por lo tanto será la encargada de llevar a cabo dichos trámites.

Manilva celebra su romería anual

anilva celebra su Romería el sábado 4 y el domingo 5 de junio de este año.

Esta peregrinación anual a la

Manilva

Virgen de Fátima está organizada por el Departamento de Cultura de Manilva y la Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores y Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, y

comienza el sábado a las 10:30 en la Iglesia de Santa Ana en Manilva, con una bendición de la procesión antes de atravesar el pueblo hacia la Ermita de San Adolfo, justo antes de los Baños Romanos de La Hedionda.

La procesión estará acompañada por jinetes de la Asociación de Jinetes de Manilva, junto con los miembros del club de excursionismo local “Los Kruos”, que acompañarán a la Virgen a la zona de picnic junto a la capilla.

Allí disfrutarán de comida y entretenimiento con la Escuela de Baile de Eva Cabrera y con el grupo “Compás Flamenco” desde las 15:30 horas.

Desde las 10:30 habrá música y baile hasta la madrugada con el grupo “Buenas noticias” que interpretan canciones del pop español de los 80 y los 90.

El domingo 5 se celebrará una Misa a las 13:00 horas, seguida por la actuación del Coro Santa Ana de Manilva. Más tarde actuarán la banda El Sexto Sonido y la escuela de baile de Jessica Quiñones a las 17:00 horas.

Los asistentes podrán disfrutar de una paella y otros manjares en el bar instalado para la ocasión.

“In so many cases we are reliably informed by both applicants and the National Police that it can take up to as many as five trips to the Police Station for people that are unprepared” stated Councillor Shelton, “this in turn leads to wasted police time, longer queues, and a very annoyed and frustrated member of the public. By us providing this service it should cut the trips down to a maximum of two, one to present the application and the other to collect the required document”.

Lastly, Dean would like to publicly convey his appreciation and thanks to the National Police force in Estepona for providing invaluable support and assistance in this project.

Manilva celebrates its annual romeria

Manilva celebrates its Romeria on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June this year.

This annual pilgrimage to the Virgen de Fátima is organised

by Manilva's Culture Department and the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores y Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno brotherhood and begins on Saturday at 10.30 am at the Santa Ana Church in Manilva with a blessing of the procession before heading off through the town towards the Ermita de San Adolfo just before the La Hedionda Roman Baths.

The procession will be accompanied by riders from the Manilva Riding Association along with members of the local hiking club “Los Kruos” will accompany the

Virgen to the picnic area next to the chapel where they will enjoy refreshments and entertainment with the Eva Cabrera Dance School and the music group “Compás Flamenco” from 3.30 pm.

From 10.30 pm there will be music and dancing into the early hours with the group “Buenas Noticias” performing 80s and 90s Spanish pop.

On Sunday 5 there will be a Mass at 1 pm, followed by a performance

by Manilva’s Santa Ana choir after which the band El Sexto Sonido will perform into the evening with a performance by Jessica Quiñones dance school at 5 pm.

There will be paella and various other treats available from the bar and a number of stalls in the area.

It’s the old pagan midsummer celebration which has been ‘Christianified’ by tacking it on to a convenient Saint’s day (if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em sort of thing).

There are a number of traditional ways of celebrating Saint John’s Night most of which involve a good bonfire.

In Estepona the central celebration is the ‘Quema de los bigotes de San Juan’ - literally ‘burning of the moustaches’ - where large papier mache figures, many of

a satirical nature, are paraded through the town before being burnt on the beach.

In Sabinillas a huge tableau is

constructed on the beach a few days before the event.

This work of art is based on a different theme every year, and it is almost a crime when, around midnight, the whole thing is set alight. It is also customary at this time to walk into the sea to wash away any bad luck.

Another tradition is for the young men of the town to jump or dive over the bonfires once they have died down a bit, the higher the flames, the greater the challenge.

The night is usually marked by firework displays, live music and dancing until the early hours of the morning.

El Ayuntamiento de Manilva cuenta con unas Ordenanzas Municipales de Limpieza, Ornato Público y Gestión de Residuos, las cuales fueron publicadas en el boletín nº 69 13/04/09 y que recogen también las denuncias por irresponsabilidad.

Como ya hiciera con las denuncias a las personas que depositan las

bolsas de basura fuera de los contenedores, la Policía Local velará, bien de uniforme o de

paisano, porque se salvaguarde el interés general y que este problema se erradique.

he Manilva Town Hall continues its efforts to educate the public to take responsibility for their pets when they are in public places.

An antisocial attitude, aside from polluting the streets, causes a high risk to public health.

The Town Hall has Municipal Cleaning, Public Decor and Waste Management ordinances, which were published in the No. 69 13/04/09 bulletin and also contain sanctions for those in breach of local bylaws.

As it has already done with the

complaints made against people who deposit garbage bags outside the containers, the local police will ensure, either in uniform or civilian clothes, that general interests are safeguarded and that this problem is eradicated.

The schedule for this basketball event will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As usual, an elite player will visit

the young athletes. In this instance, Unicaja player Alberto Diaz will take on the role.

New holiday rental laws in Andalucia

A

fter years of discussion about the need to register private rental properties and a lot of pressure from the hotels here in Andalucía the Junta de Andalucía (regional Government) finally drafted a new law to regulate the private rental market here in Andalucia which came into force from 11 May 2016 The intention, we are told, is to ensure the quality of accommodation offered and allow recourse to visitors if the accommodation or service provided falls below the standard expected therefore maintaining a positive image of Andalucia to the millions of tourists visiting each year.

The official Decree is 28/2016 There is a lot of confusion about what people need to do to comply with this new law and who it is applicable to.

Duquesa Estates, the largest supplier of this type of accommodation in the Manilva area, are outlining below the information we have been given directly from the department responsible for its implementation.

What is required from me to register What type of property needs to be my property? registered?

A certificate of first occupation or Cédula de Habitabilidad.

If you currently advertise or intend to advertise your property for holiday rental you will need to register and display your registration number on any advert that you have if the property is one of the following A property that is built on land classified as residential or in a residential building.

The property is to be rented to tourists on a short term basis, daily, weekly or even by the month If the property is listed with an intermediary like estate agent, on any reservation system or on line property portal such as airbnb, ownersdiect, etc or on any website or publication for the purpose of renting out to tourists.

Which properties are excluded?

Properties that are not advertised for rental and where no money changes hands, i.e you lend the property to family and friends.

If you rent out for 2 month or more to the same person then this would be classed as a long term rental and subject to that particular law.

Rural properties on land classified as rural Landlords owning 3 or more properties (Apartmentos Turisticos, effectively classed as an hotel and subject to those laws)

You should have received this from your solicitor at the time of purchase or it can be obtained from the town hall in Manilva.

Your NIE or passport number (if using a passport you will also need to submit a copy of this passport).

Referencia Catastral. 20 digit reference. You can find this on an IBI bill (annual council tax) Title deed registration number along with date and name of the Notary where you completed your purchase, you can find this information on the front cover of your title deeds or at the end of a Nota Simple.

The name and contact details of the registered key holder along with their company details if they are a company or the person’s name, NIE number and contact information if not a company.

Property requirements All bedrooms must have windows and shutters or curtains for when needed.

Lounge and bedrooms must have air conditioning during the summer (between May and September) and heating in the winter (October to April) you will have until May 2017 to install this if you don’t have this already.

A first aid kit must be available in all properties.

Information must be given on local facilities, i.e doctors, taxis, parking, restaurants, maps of the area etc , this can be printed or electronic information.

An official complaints book along with large sign advising

guests that one is available for guests to use in case of a complaint.

The property must be cleaned before and after every guest and included in the advertised price and a second set of linen should be provided.

Contact information and telephone number of key holder for any emergency or for complaints.

A copy of any community rules and bylaws must be clearly displayed in each property.

Advertised prices should be inclusive of electric, water and cleaning.

Upon arrival at the property.

A detailed holiday rental agreement or contract is to be given to guests and a copy kept for a year in case of inspection, this should include The address of the property and the registration number The owner’s name The amount paid for the accommodation The names of all guests and passport numbers Arrival and departure dates.

Registering guests A registration form will also need to be filled in by those arriving in Spain to comply with Spanish security, similar to registration in a hotel, the registered key holder will then have 24 hours to submit these plus copies of all passports for everyone over 16 to the Guadia Civil via their online database, a username and password can be obtained for this from the Guadia Civil in Malaga only.

Registration forms need to be held for 3 years in case of inspection by the Spanish security services.

In conclusion It is possible to fill in and register the property yourself and the process of obtaining the registration number is completely free of charge however it is a 7 page document only available in Spanish with a lot of room for error.

This law came into effect from the 11th of May and even though the registration process didn’t start until that date the Junta de Andalucia now expect everyone to have submitted their application by that date.

If possible it would be advisable to get someone to do it on your behalf to avoid delays, most solicitors and accountants appear to be charging around a hundred euros to submit the application for their clients which covers their time, Duquesa Estates are registering our client’s properties at no charge.

The registration however is just the first step in the process and what is not being widely reported is the ongoing responsibilities associated with processing and managing the bookings once the law is applicable so it is important to use only registered agents for key holding who can and will fulfill the Spanish side of an owner’s obligation to

register guests properly and deal with any issues because it will be the owners of the property who could be fined if the property fails an inspection further down the line and with fines ranging from €2000 to €150,000 this new law should to be taken seriously .

Implemented correctly we believe the new laws are actually a good thing providing accountability in the private letting market and will only enhance visitors holidays hopefully bring them back for years to come.

The number of properties being offered for rental will most certainly drop later this year boosting bookings for owners who are prepared to offer a decent standard of accommodation and service.

Demand this year is at an all time high with Spain being more popular than ever and the Manilva area becoming a firm favourite with visitors from all over Europe.

La antigua estación de bomberos de Estepona tendrá una nueva vida como centro de baloncesto Han comenzado los trabajos para convertir la antigua estación de bomberos de Estepona en un centro de baloncesto según el acuerdo entre el Ayuntamiento y el club de baloncesto Club Amigos del Baloncesto.

A cambio de la donación del edificio, el club realizará todos los trabajos necesarios para la conversión y mantenimiento general del edificio, que tendrá una pista de baloncesto y dos pistas de minibasket.

Según el Alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, esto proporcionará instalaciones de entrenamiento para los 200

El sábado 11 de junio, en la Avda. Padre Cura, previa inscripción en la delegación municipal de Cultura, hasta las 14:00 horas del 10 de junio

stepona will be hosting a paella contest on Saturday 11 June in the town’s Huerta Nueva area.

Organised by the Bar Mena El Tobalo in Avda. Padre Cura in collaboration with the Culture Department and the Monica Peña Dance Academy, who will be giving a performance at 12.30 pm, there will be an opportunity to sample dozens of paellas and rice dishes submitted by the up to 20 contestants.

Padre Cura, en colaboración con la delegación de Cultura y la Academia de Baile de Mónica Peña, que ofrecerá una actuación a las 12:30 horas, podrán tomar parte todas aquellas personas mayores de edad que lo deseen.

La participación podrá ser por grupos o por personas individuales, con un máximo de 20 participantes.

Todo el material necesario para la elaboración de las paellas, tales como paellera, rosco de gas, etc... será por cuenta de los concursante, así como los ingredientes a utilizar para su cocinado, a excepción de un litro de aceite y dos kilos de arroz, que será facilitado a cada participante por la organización.

La hora de llegada a Huerta Nueva para la asignación de números y ubicación a cada participante, será a partir de las

9:00 horas, debiendo estar las paellas finalizadas a las 14:00 horas, para su presentación al jurado, que estará formado por reconocidos profesionales del sector de la restauración.

Se podrá elaborar cualquier tipo de paellas o arroces en todas sus variedades y presentaciones, que podrán ser degustados por el público, al precio de 2 € la ración.

La recaudación será destinada íntegramente a la Asociación Pro-Discapacitados Psíquicos de Estepona, Aprona.

All the contestants provide their own ingredients according to their personal recipes except for a litre of oil and two kilos of rice which are provided by the organisers.

The cook off begins at 9 am and all the dishes must be ready for judging at 2 pm. A specially selected jury will judge the paellas after which the general public can enjoy them for just 2 euros a portion.

All proceeds go to Estepona’s mentally handicapped association, Aprona.

Impuestos en la compraventa de una vivienda

D

e acuerdo con la legislación española, todo individuo que resida en España más de 183 días al año es considerado residentes fiscales en España y debe pagar impuestos en nuestro país por sus ingresos obtenidos en todo el mundo.

Muchos extranjeros que viven permanentemente en España, o sea más de 183 días al año, no pagan ningún impuesto en España, o no presentan declaraciones anuales de la renta. Algunos no presentan la declaración de la renta por ignorancia, y otros porque piensan que si los impuestos en España son muy altos, etc. Sea cual sea la razón, es importante saber que el desconocimiento de la ley no excluye de su cumplimiento. La declaración de la renta debe presentarse anualmente, y los impuestos deben ser pagados cuando sea aplicable a todos los residentes fiscales en España.

Hasta el día de hoy, la Agencia Tributaria no ha estado controlando la situación de

aquellos extranjeros que viven de forma permanente en España, a pesar del hecho de que las autoridades son conscientes de la importancia de este grupo de personas. Ahora la situación ha cambiado, debido a la crisis económica el gobierno español ha intensificado los controles sobre este grupo de personas (extranjeros que viven en España) para garantizar que éstos paguen sus impuestos cuando tengan obligación de hacerlo.

Y es que uno de los principales motivos por el que el gobierno español ha iniciado una nueva campaña en busca de aquellos que no hacen su declaración de la renta es para evitar que miles de personas reciban asistencia sanitaria gratis sin pagar impuestos y sin tener derecho a recibirla. Es por ello que se han endurecido los requisitos necesarios que permiten a las personas obtener la tarjeta sanitaria española. Al contrario de lo que ocurría en el pasado, ya no será suficiente con registrarse en el ayuntamiento (empadronarse) para obtener asistencia médica.

Por todo ello, si aún no ha presentado su declaración de la renta como residente fiscal, éste es el momento de hacerlo mediante la presentación de la declaración de la renta del año 2015, durante los meses de mayo y junio de 2016.

Hay muchas buenas razones para hacer ello. Esto permitirá a los extranjeros residentes: 1. 1.Confirmar a la Agencia tributaria sin ninguna duda, que ellos son residentes fiscales en España, que viven permanentemente aquí y pagan sus impuestos cuando tienen la obligación de hacerlo.

2. 2.Tener derecho a recibir tarjeta sanitaria que permite el acceso al sistema público de salud español.

3. 3.Evitar el 3 % de retención aplicable a no residentes cuando venden un inmueble y no pueden probar que son residentes fiscales en España.

4. 4.Beneficiarse de las ventajas y deducciones que el impuesto de sucesiones y donaciones aplica a los residentes fiscales (por ejemplo, eliminación del impuesto de sucesiones entre esposos, sobre la vivienda habitual, etc..).

5. 5.Ser considerado residente fiscal en España, y así evitar el impuesto sobre la renta presunta aplicable a los no residentes que son propietarios de bienes inmuebles en España (modelo 210).

Es importante mencionar, que la mayoría de los extranjeros que viven en España son pensionistas, cuyos ingresos mensuales no son muy altos, por lo que deben ser conscientes que lo más probable es que no tengan que pagar ningún impuesto de la renta en España ya que el resultado de su declaración de la renta será probablemente cero o en el caso de tener que pagar ésta será una pequeña cantidad. Sin embargo, es recomendable presentar dicha declaración (incluso cuando el resultado es cero y no hay impuestos que pagar), para poder así aprovecharse de los beneficios descritos anteriormente.

No esperes más, Si eres extranjero y vives de forma permanente en España (más de 183 días entre el 1 de enero 2015 y 31 de diciembre

2015 ) te recomendamos presentar tu declaración de la renta del año 2015 durante los meses de mayo y junio 2016.

Haciendo esto, confirmarás a la Agencia tributaria que eres, sin lugar a dudas, residente fiscal en España, evitando problemas posteriores y posibles multas, teniendo todos los derechos que las leyes españolas reconocen a todos los individuos que residen legalmente en España y pagan sus impuestos aquí.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE TAX RESIDENT IN SPAIN - THAT’S THE QUESTION According to the Spanish Law each individual who lives in Spain for more than 183 days a year is considered a tax resident in Spain, and should pay taxes in Spain for their worldwide income.

Many foreigners living in Spain permanently, (i.e. more than 183 days a year), do not pay any taxes in Spain, or submit annual income tax returns. Some do not submit annual tax returns out of ignorance of the law, and others because they are afraid of paying high taxes, etc. Whatever the reason, is important to be aware that ignorance of the law is no excuse. The Tax return declaration should be submitted annually, and taxes should be paid when applicable by all tax residents in Spain.

Up to date, the Spanish Inland Revenue has not been controlling the situation of those foreigners living permanently in Spain, despite the fact that authorities are aware of this important group of people. Now the situation has changed, due to the economical crisis, the Spanish Government has intensified controls of this group of people (foreigners living in Spain) to ensure that they pay taxes where due.

...Continued from previous page One of the main reasons why the Spanish Government has launched a new campaign in search of those who do not submit their Tax return is to avoid thousands of people receiving free health services without paying taxes and without having the legal right to get them. For that reason, they have strengthened the legal requirements that allow people to get Spanish health cards. Unlike in the past, now it will not be enough to just register with the local Town Hall (called “Empadronamiento”) in order to get treatment.

Therefore, NOW is the time to formally become a tax resident in Spain by submitting your annual income tax return for the tax year 2015, This should be done during the months of May and June 2016.

There are many good reasons for doing this. It will enable foreign residents to: 1.Confirm to the Spanish tax authorities without doubt, that they, the tax resident, is living in Spain, and paying taxes when applicable.

2.Have the legal right to receive a health card which allows access to the Spanish Public health system.

3.Avoid the 3 % withholding tax when a real estate property is sold. This tax is applicable to foreigners who sell a property and cannot prove that they are a tax resident in Spain.

4.Benefit from the inheritance tax advantages and allowances applicable to tax residents in Spain (i.e. no inheritance taxes between spouses on the main home).

5.Be considered a tax resident in Spain, thus avoiding the income tax applicable to non-resident foreigners who are owners of a real estate property in Spain (tax form 210).

It is important to mention that most foreigners living in Spain are pensioners with low monthly pensions, so they should be aware that they probably will not have to pay any income tax in Spain as the result of their tax return would most likely be zero or in the event they have to pay, this will be a small amount. However, it is still recommendable to submit an annual tax return, (even if the result is zero and no tax has to be paid), to enable them to be able to take advantage of the above points.

Don´t wait any longer, if you are foreigner living permanently in Spain (for more than 183 days between 1st January 2015 and 31st December 2015) I would recommend that you submit an annual income tax return for the tax year 2015, during the months of May and June 2016. By doing so,confirming to the Spanish Tax Authorities that you are, without doubt, a tax resident in Spain, you will avoid any potential problems, or fines, and will have all the legal rights that the Spanish Laws recognizes are due to all individuals residing legally in Spain and duly paying their taxes here.

Concierto de Rondalla Municipal El Ayuntamiento de Estepona informa que la Rondalla Municipal, dependiente de la Delegación de Cultura, ofrecerá el próximo sábado, 11 de junio de 2016, a las 20:00 horas, un Concierto Extraordinario en el Auditorio Felipe VI, con el que conmemorará su X Aniversario.

Bajo la dirección de Juan Gamero, el público asistente podrá disfrutar de una velada musical de la Rondalla, compuesta por casi una treintena de miembros de todas las edades, quienes interpretarán una mezcla del repertorio clásico de rondalla,

formado por obras muy populares de varios estilos, como pasacalles, valses, pasodobles, boleros, sevillanas, rumbas…, con otros temas de autores contemporáneos, clásicos y populares andaluces.

La entrada al concierto será gratuita, hasta completar el aforo, previa recogida de invitación, a partir del 1 de junio, de 18:00 a 20:30 horas, en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel, hasta agotar localidades.

La Rondalla Municipal de Estepona Comenzó su andadura en el año 2005 con alumnos del Aula de Guitarra del Ayuntamiento de Estepona. En 2006 se agregaron a la formación un conjunto de voces y percusión que consolidaron la agrupación y pasaron a denominarse Rondalla

Municipal de Estepona, compuesta por casi una treintena de miembros de todas las edades.

La Rondalla está formada por instrumentos de pulso y púa, (bandurrias, laúdes, mandolina), guitarras, bajo, percusión y coro.

Concert by the Estepona Rondalla group Estepona’s Cultural Department presents a special concert by the Municipal Rondalla traditional music group who will be performing at the Auditorio Felipe VI theatre on 11 June to celebrate the group’s tenth anniversary.

Under the direction of Juan Gamero the audience can enjoy an evening of traditional music by the group which comprises some thirty members of all ages. Amongst the pieces performed there will be

pasacalles, waltzes, pasodobles, boleros, sevillanas, rumbas and other styles of contemporary, classical and regional music.

Entry to the concert is by free ticket which can be picked up between 6 pm and 8.30 pm from the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre.

The Estepona Rondalla Beginning back in 2005 with students from the Municipal Guitar School, in 2006 they were joined by singers and percussionists to form the Municipal Rondalla, a group of thirty members of all ages.

The Rondalla comprises players of a variety of plucked instruments including guitars, mandolins, lutes, and bass, along with choral and percussion sections.

Es verano, es el momento de disfrutar de los chiringuitos Nada es más típico del verano español en la Costa del Sol que una visita a uno de los muchos chiringuitos que llenan la cista. Las playas de Manilva cuentan con gran cantidad de estos establecimientos tan tradicionales, desde el más rústico a los más elegantes. No hay nada igual a sentarse en la terraza, observando las preciosas arenas y el brillo del Mediterráneo, escuchando música en vivo o simplemente el sonido de las olas rompiendo en la orilla, con el olor de la maravillosa comida fresca que sale de la barbacoa, y una bebida bien fría.

Muchos puristas se han opuesto a los recientes edictos del Ministerio de Costas que requieren que todos los chiringuitos se muevan al borde de las playas, y las anteriores

construcciones tipo choza han sido demolidas para crear estructuras más permanentes, perdiendo así parte de su carácter tradicional.

El lado positivo es que muchos chiringuitos permanecen abiertos durante más tiempo, incluso todo el año.

Manilva’s beaches have no shortage of these traditional hostelries, ranging from the distinctly rustic to the more upmarket and everything in between. Many purists have objected to the

Coastal Ministry’s recent edicts requiring all chiringuitos be moved to the edge of the beaches and the previous ramshackle constructions have been demolished to make way for new, more permanent

structures, with a loss of some of the traditional character. The upside to this though is that many chiringuitos have extended their opening season, with some remaining open all-year-round.

Los Alcornocales Parque Natural in Cadiz province By Nick Nutter Los Alcornocales occupies the southern tip of the Iberian section of the Betic mountain range. It covers over 17,000 hectares and ranges in height from sea level just north of Tarifa to the peak of Aljibe at 1,092 metres near the north end of the Parque. Jimena de la Frontera is situated about half way up the eastern boundary of the Parque.

The name Alcornocales gives a clue as to the main type of vegetation, alcornoque is the cork oak and it is this tree that predominates along with its cousin the gall oak. Together with wild olive trees, sarsaparillas and white poplars they make up the largest Mediterranean forest in Europe.

Oak trees are a life support system in themselves. They harbour more insects in and on them than any other tree in the northern hemisphere. Consequently they also attract a great range of birds to feed off the insects and nuts. Los Alcornocales is famous for its bird life. Insect eaters include robins, blackbirds, great tits, nightingales, bee-eaters and swallows. You will see warblers and tree creepers and pied and yellow wagtails in abundance along the streams and rivers. Soaring on the thermals you will see many species of eagle

including booted and short toed and hovering, waiting to pounce, falcons and goshawks. Sparrow hawks hunt the perimeter of copses skimming the earth looking for rodents and smaller birds. There are three main species of vulture here too, griffons, over 800 pairs, and the more rare spotted vulture and Egyptian vulture.

Mammals are also well represented.

Hidden away in the thickets and occasionally seen are deer and roe deer. Badgers and foxes come out at night to join the owls in their

hunt for food. Otters, once almost extinct here, are making a come back in the rivers whilst ferrets are only ever glimpsed streaking between patches of cover.

Drive to Jimena de la Frontera on the Algeciras to Ronda road. On the Ronda side of Jimena take the road signposted Ubrique. Stay on this road for about 22km as it twists and winds through the hills until you see signs for Nucleo Recreativo Ambiental La Sauceda on the left. There is ample parking on the right.

El Club Internacional de esgrima de Estepona participó en una nueva competición de esgrima organizada por la Asociación Gerónimo Sánchez de Carranza coincidiendo las Fiestas del Corpus de Granada. Las categorías fueron divididas en esgrimistas veteranos (mayores de 35 años) y absolutos en el polideportivo de la Ciudad de Albolote (Granada).

Tres tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” participaron en la competición. En la categoría masculina de veteranos el ganador fue nuestro maestro Paul Holder que se enfrentó en semifinales al también maestro Alberto Zerrada que consiguió medalla de bronce. Este competido asalto estuvo cargado de preciosismo, elegancia, entrega, complicidad y emotividad ya que estos dos maestros son grandes amigos dentro y fuera de la pista desde hace más de 10 años.

En categoría absoluta el club estuvo representado por Adr-

yan Agustyn y Alberto Zerrada.

Adryan realizó una gran competición quedando entre los 5 primeros realizando una magnífica poule de clasificación. Alberto Zerrada consiguió en la categoría reina esta vez el subcampeonato de la competición gracias al apoyo del Club, que siempre estuvieron animando poniendo de manifiesto la armonía y compañerismo que existe en el club más laureado de Málaga en la categoría de espada.

Enhorabuena a todos y a continuar con el maravilloso arte de la esgrima. El próximo encuentro tendrá lugar en Madrid en el Criterium Nacional de Menores de 12 años el 12 de junio y el Campeonato Andaluz de Esgrima el próximo 18 de junio en Maracena (Granada). Mucha suerte y valor para nuestros tiradores a los que auguramos un seguro nuevo éxito.

Three new trophies for the International Fencing Club "AndaluZia"

Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter between all peoples was shared by the audience.

We felt honoured that the Jewish Community of the Costa Del Sol had been invited on this very special day.

Other trips have taken us to GRANADA, LUCENA and CORDOBA where we have explored our heritage.

On the lighter side of things, we visited the Honey Factory in Montero.

Owned by a charming family who gave us a tour of the honey making process and of course, a tasting session of some incredible flavours.

We greatly appreciate the cooperation of the Ayuntamiento of Manilva and in particular Dean Shelton and Jan Mitchell.

The International Estepona Fencing Club participated in a new fencing competition organized by the Gerónimo Sánchez de Carranza Association in Granada, coinciding with the Granada Corpus festivities. Participants were divided into two categories, veteran (over 35 years) and absolute, at the sports complex in the town of Albolote (Granada).

Three members of the "Andaluzia" club took part in the competition.

In the men's veteran category club teacher Paul Holder secured his victory opposite Alberto Zerrada, also a teacher, who won the bronze medal in the semifinals. This competitive match showed refinement, elegance, dedication, complicity and emotion as these two teachers have been great friends on and off the circuit for over 10 years.

In the absolute category the club was represented by Adryan

Agustyn and Alberto Zerrada. Adryan made a great effort with a place in the top 5 in the competition. Alberto Zerrada came runner up in the premier class this time thanks to the support of the Club, who were always there to cheer him on highlighting the harmony and camaraderie that exists in the most successful fencing club in Malaga.

Congratulations to all and may you continue the wonderful art of fencing. The next meeting will take place in Madrid in the National under 12’s criterium on June 12 and the Andalusian Fencing Championship next June 18 in Maracena (Granada). Good luck to all our fencers who will surely come away with further success.

Después de una jornada

e congregan los amigos junto al árbol.

Despacio, melódico, el himno de la amistad se oye crujir en la tierra, amigos son de tierra y de fruto en la necesidad de la vida. Amigos son infancia: tiovivos sin feria sobre trenes sonoros de la naturalidad.

Berta, la psicóloga, espera vislumbrar esta noche a los satélites, ellos revolotean en el cielo entregando mensajes de paz.

Lupe, la colombiana, se hiere a sí misma pensando en sus hijos: “Qué lejos están de aquí. Molinos en el cielo. ¡Qué pan de luz les llevará la luna a su mesa!... “¿Qué os parece, los astros son trigo, y dónde está el gran molino: en la luna o en la tierra?...”. Lupe, piensa y piensa hasta que del árbol donde se reúnen ella y sus amigos se desprende una hoja y cae en su frente lisa y ancha, una hoja pequeña, oscura y verde –oscura de noche y verde de día– para que la recoja y la guarde en el libro de su mirada, y así no traspase el sueño la cavilación y lo convierta en recuerdo y nostalgia.

Lupe, Berta, Mario, Ramón… ¡Todos cantan al final de la noche la canción del silencio!

–¡Qué oscuro está el cielo sin canciones! ¡Qué triste es estar lejos de tu pueblo, de tus familiares y amigos! –Berta incita a los murciélagos y a las lechuzas entre canción y canción. Berta es del norte de España y allí el frío no puede con la noche, aunque lo intenta, pero el silencio, a veces, sí que puede, porque el silencio es más poderoso que la oscuridad y el frío–. Es preciso continuar en las noches, inseparables, todos juntos, para llegar a tejer el sueño y volver a ver de nuevo a los nuestros.

–¿Pero cómo será posible eso? Estamos aquí por pura necesidad. Vivimos tan lejos de nuestro país. ¿Cuándo ganaremos lo suficiente como para poder traernos a nuestras familias? –pensó Ramón en voz alta– ¿Creéis que es fácil para mí llevar tres años sin ver a mis hijos?

–Lo terrible es tener que dejar tu pueblo y a tus seres queridos para…

Berta comenzó a llorar sin que nadie se diera cuenta,

No puedo pasar por alto la vida gastándola inútilmente, entonces me pregunto, qué puedo hacer hoy, además de agradecer, de ofrecer y tomar el café en un humo envolvente de esperanzas, sí, puedo escribir este poema para ti, y para el otro, y para mí mismo y para el sapo y la higuera y para los tordos en negro iluminado, y también para las propias palabras, en homenaje a ellas, que son luz, ilusión, canción que canto y dejo para el mundo.

Ninguno de los dos pasamos hambre El campo duerme, en su racimo de noche la madrugada acoge a los murciélagos, a los búhos y grillos, y un puercoespín decide su aventura atravesando el carril para entrar en el sembrado... ...Me despierto, tengo apetito, el gato me mira, y parece decirme: “Si me acuesto sin cenar, me desvelo hambriento, a todos nos pasa. ¿A ti, no?”.

“Sé que me has leído el pensamiento”, le digo al gato mientras lo acaricio; después se acurruca junto a mí, por un instante ninguno de los dos pasamos hambre, y oigo afuera el viento cansando a las ramas del laurel.

Era una mujer de un corazón especial, capaz de percibir los sentimientos de sus amigos y descifrarlos rápidamente. Algunos de los que descansaban debajo del árbol, tenían el corazón endurecido, las adversidades de la vida y los hechos sucedidos en su pueblo natal, añadido a muchos de los acontecimientos ocurridos en los últimos meses en el país donde trabajaban, les había destrozado el corazón. “El mundo está cerrado”, pensó en voz alta un inmigrante.

–Solo nos dan propina, eso recibimos, y a Dios gracias, y a Dios gracias –dijo uno.

–Hay que tener paciencia. Nos hemos conocido y estamos unidos. Somos amigos. Nuestra fuerza es cada vez mayor.

Tratemos de ser cada día mejores profesionales; todo para conseguir… Y somos amigos, que eso es lo fundamental –aconsejó Berta que les pedía calma para llegar al sueño con la disposición de viajar en el satélite que por fin veía aparecer sobre el cielo estrellado.

–Pero tú eres psicóloga y estás aquí por puro trabajo de investigación –comentó uno de sus amigos.

Berta se sintió ofendida. No supo reaccionar y miró en silencio a sus amigos con un gesto claro de tristeza al cerrar los ojos, y dijo: –Y probablemente no seas tú el único que piense eso de mí. Sabéis perfectamente que como psicóloga y como escritora, lo que me ha traído hasta vosotros, es la amistad y el compromiso social que tengo por todos los inmigrantes. Yo misma soy inmigrante. Todos los somos quizás.

–Pues toma buena nota de la insatisfacción y las miserias a las que nos encontramos sometidos…

–No lo haré. No he venido a escribir un libro sobre vuestras desventuras aquí. ¿Acaso en nuestro pueblo no éramos ya lo suficientemente indigentes e infelices? Sé que tuve suerte consiguiendo esa beca y lograr así viajar hasta aquí. He tenido otros éxitos anteriormente en otros trabajos; pero esto es distinto. ¿No os habéis dado cuenta de que llevo ya demasiado tiempo aquí en esta aldea, junto a vosotros, y que podría haber concluido mi obra; y sin embargo, sigo a vuestro lado? Mañana mismo me pondré a trabajar en la recogida de la remolacha y la fruta, esto no es parte del trato que hice conmigo misma, en verdad, se trata de experimentar la realidad laboral en la

He hablado con el propietario del piso donde habito y hemos llegado a un acuerdo de alargar el contrato de alquiler de la vivienda que comparto, como sabéis, con una de mis colegas que trabaja en el centro social. Ella me ha dicho que debo de estar loca si no me alejo pronto de este lugar, dice que a este pueblo, el que llega, le cuesta marcharse. El don de la hospitalidad no la tienen todos los pueblos. Pero yo creo que la loca es mi compañera… –todos miraron a Berta con un sonrisa instigadora.

–Berta, no seas ignorante. Los pueblos no se coordinan.

Buscamos bienestar, trabajo, una mejor vida para nosotros y nuestras familias. Tú eres célebre y ganas dinero. No puedes malgastar tu vida. Has venido a escribir un libro y ya lo has hecho. Márchate. Sigue tu camino. No cargues tu conciencia de detalles. Nosotros, vosotros, ellos; ¿quién puede parar el hambre de pueblos y pueblos enteros si no es el propio hombre en justicia, igualdad y bondad?

No sé lo que habrás escrito en tu libro sobre nosotros.

Somos tus amigos y en realidad no te conocemos. Ahora, después de todo lo que hemos hablado contigo en estos casi cuatro años, seguro que sabrás más de cada uno de nosotros que nosotros mismos, pero no te confundas, no seas engreída, porque lo que de verdad espero, es que en tu libro se refleje el exilio interno del hombre, ese hombre que camina en busca de la felicidad y va de pueblo en pueblo, inmigrante siempre a los ojos del presuntuoso y avaro, habitante del primer mundo, tratante de seres como de cebollas y artilugios para usar y tirar lo sobrante, lo estropeado; también hay hombres de ingenios que ojalá trabajen por algo más que por el consumismo desordenado; hombre, nómada siempre, que va de un lado a otro, revoloteando en las alas de sus sueños. >Pero nosotros, si lo queremos, después de la fatiga y el trabajo, en el descanso, podemos ser el pueblo elegido y próspero, al que retornamos hoy como a un Pentateuco del presente.

Berta miró a sus amigos y sintió que ellos eran algo más que simples inmigrantes buscando bienestar en ese pueblo, y pensó en lo que le dijo su colega de que ella ya no se marcharía nunca de allí. ¿Qué tenía ese pueblo? Ella, tal vez no lo haría ahora, pero estaba segura, conociendo su espíritu inquieto, de que pasado el tiempo, sí que se iría de ese lugar, tal vez, cuando conociera mejor a sus propios amigos, y el misterio de ese pueblo.

Una vez le vino de repente a la cabeza, contemplando la noche estrellada, que quizás se encontraba en el lugar definitivo, pero desechó rápidamente esa idea. Satélites se distinguían en el cielo, esa noche ella los reflejó en sus escritos como un lugar alcanzado por todos los que habitaban esas tierras, y pensó, con modestia, que ella era aún un inmigrante, en un lugar cualquiera del planeta, con algunas epístolas que enviar a otras regiones del mundo

an independent municipality since 1796. Before that it was a part of Casares. It is debateable whether or not it would exist at all if it were not for the Barbary pirates. Why, well you will have to read the book.

'You would be surprised just how much there is to discover about this forgotten corner of the Costa del Sol. We have been able to include subjects such as the history of amphorae and Roman roads, both integral to the development of the area from Neolithic times up to the present'.

Recent ICE Club activites What have we been up to at ICE over the past month?

Some of the most intrepid of us walked the Caminito del Rey up in the valley of the Guadalhorce at the end of April, and an exhilarating experience it proved to be. It’s about 7 km along a path built into the wall of a gorge, so the views are spectacular. The original path was demolished and reconstructed last year, and it’s all quite safe. You even get a safety helmet to make sure.

At the beginning of May a coachload of us headed for Sanlúcar de Barrameda where the river Guadalquivir meets the Atlantic, about a three-hour drive.

We stayed 2 nights in this historic town, which is well-known for its sherry bodegas, and for being one of the main ports from which the conquistadores sailed for the New World back in the 15th century. The first thing we did on arrival was to move to a different hotel, as the first had just had its mains water

cut off because of a broken pipe.

However, this minor hiccough was smoothly dealt with, and we went on to spend the evening at the Jerez Feria del Caballo. Here we enjoyed the sights and sounds of the amazing horses and carriages, the ladies in their feria finery, the bar-lined avenues, the street sellers, the fairground rides, and the market. When the light faded the illuminations were spectacular.

The next morning different groups went to see the local sights or visit a bodega, where many samples of different sherries were enjoyed.

After that it was lunch at one of the many fish restaurants overlooking the estuary, and then a boat trip into the famous Doñana National and Nature Park. We were able to observe the typical flora and fauna along the banks of the river, and had a guided tour of the remains of the settlements. There was a lot left to see of both Doñana and the port of Sanlúcar, and this area is well worth a visit.

On the 22nd it was curtain up for the ICE Summer Show. It was an extravaganza of song, dance and comedy – both intended and unexpected, the latter mainly

courtesy of an uncooperative computer that declined to play backing tracks at the correct speed.

A great evening’s entertainment was had by all.

Then on the 25th it was Castellar Zoo. This is really an animal rescue centre, where they look after animals they receive from other zoos, circuses, or from the customs inspectors who confiscate illegally imported animals. It’s a small centre with excellent facilities,

and we enjoyed getting up close and personal with a panther cub, an ocelot, a penguin, a snake, a monkey, a lemur, and lots more. At the end some birds gave a show. If you’ve never seen a parrot ride a bicycle, this is the place for you.

If you’ve been put off joining ICE by the stairs in the club, then you won’t have to be put off much longer. Our new disabled lift will be completed in July!

The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George is hosting a weekly surgery by Citizens Advice Bureau Spain every Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 1 pm.

The surgery will be held at the St George Charity’s new shop in Calle Aurora de Albornoz, Punta Almina, Sabinillas, and is part of the Charity’s community support programme.

If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy.

All consultations are free but CAB Spain is funded by donations, so if you feel that their advice has been valuable then please make a donation in the tin provided.

El Castillo de la Duquesa

A

ll oeste del puerto deportivo Puerto de la Duquesa, encontramos la pequeña aldea El Castillo. Toma su nombre del Castillo de la Duquesa, una fortaleza del siglo XVIII que se erige a la entrada. La historia de esta aldea de pescadores se remonta al menos a los tiempos romanos, cuando era un bullicioso centro industrial cuyos productos eran el pescado en salazón y una pasta muy peculiar hecha a partir de las tripas fermentadas del pescado, conocida como Garum.

Esta antigua “Delicia de los caballeros” era un producto muy popular en Roma, de forma que trajo bastante prosperidad a este rincón del Imperio.

Los restos del asentamiento romano aún pueden verse. Al suroeste del Castillo, al lado de la Plaza de los Baños, están los antiguos baños romanos. Aunque actualmente están tras una verja cerrada, aún pueden verse los restos de la sala de calderas con su horno e hipocaustos (calefacción bajo el suelo) y una gran bañera de piedra. Además, quedan restos del

suelo original de mosaico.

Entre el Castillo y la carretera principal existe una villa romana de la que pueden verse los cimientos y los omnipresentes hipocaustos. Y al norte, entre el

Castillo y el Puerto, se ubicaban las ollas de salazón y los tanques de fermentación.

El Castillo fue construido en 1760 y el Rey Carlos III le concedió al arquitecto, Francisco Paulino,

el mando de una compañía de caballería por sus servicios. Desde entonces el edificio ha tenido diferentes usos y actualmente se utiliza para exposiciones y eventos culturales, además de

albergar algunas oficinas del Ayuntamiento.

Dirigiéndote a la aldea, verás que es muy compacta, aunque queda sitio para algunas bonitas plazas, bares, restaurantes (algunos de los mejores restaurantes de pescado de la zona se encuentran aquí), e incluso tiene su propia iglesia, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, santa patrona de El Castillo dedicada a los pescadores y marineros. La Iglesia es el centro de la principal celebración anual del Castillo, el Día de la Virgen del Carmen el 16 de julio. La imagen de la Virgen sale en procesión desde el Castillo al Puerto de la Duquesa, donde se embarca en un barco de pesca antes de unirse a la procesión de Sabinillas, donde los devotos pueden admirarla.

El Castillo de la Duquesa está flanqueado por playas a ambos lados, con excelentes chiringuitos, y está a poca distancia a pie del nuevo tramo de paseo marítimo que lleva al bullicioso Puerto de la Duquesa, con su gran selección de bares y restaurantes, y a solo 10 minutos a pie de Sabinillas.

Castillo de la Duquesa Situated just to the west of the marina of Puerto de la Duquesa is the small hamlet of Castillo. Taking it’s name from the Castillo de la Duquesa, an 18th Century fortress which stands at the entrance, this fishing village can trace it’s history back to at least Roman times when it was a bustling industrial centre whose chief products were salted fish and a rather peculiar paste made from fermented fish guts known as Garum. This ancient ‘Gentlemen’s Relish’ was much sought after back in Rome and so brought a great deal of prosperity to this corner of the Empire.

The remnants of the Roman settlement can still be seen today. To southwest of the Castle, next to the ‘Plaza de Banos’, is the old old bathhouse. Although currently behind a locked gate you can still see the remains of the boilerhouse with it’s oven and ‘hypocausts’ (underfloor heating) and large stone bathing tank, as well as patches of the original mosaic flooring.

Between the Castle and the main road is the site of a Roman villa of which just the foundations and the ubiquitous hypocausts are still visible.And to the northeast between the Castle and the Port is where the salt pans and fermentation tanks were located.

The Castle itself was built in the 1760’s and the architect, Francisco Paulino, was

granted command of a company of cavalry

by King Charles III for his services.

Since then the building has had many uses and is currently used for exhibitions and cultural events, as well as council offices.

Heading into the village you soon realise how compact it is, yet there is still room for some very pleasant squares, bars, restaurants (some of the best fish restaurants in the area are located here) and it even has it’s own church – Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, Castillo’s patron saint dedicated to mariners and fishermen. The Church is the focus for Castillo’s main annual celebration, Día Virgen del Carmen on July 16, when the effigy of the Saint is borne in procession from Castillo to Duquesa Port where it is embarked on a fishing boat before joining the Sabinillas procession for a voyage up and down the coast to the adulation of the devoted onlookers.

Castillo de la Duquesa is flanked by beaches on either side both with excellent chiringuitos (beach bar/restaurants), and is just a short walk along the new stretch of promenade to the bright lights of Puerto de la Duquesa, with its cosmopolitan selection of bars and restaurants, and just a further ten minutes into the small town of Sabinillas.

pending too much time outdoors in the summer sun may raise the risk of a common sight-robbing disease later in life, according to a new study.

Researchers found that people who spent a lot of time in the summer sun in their teens, 30s, and after age 40 were twice as likely to develop an early form of age-related macular degeneration

than those who stayed out of the sun.

However, the study also suggests that protective measures, such as wearing a hat and sunglasses, can dramatically reduce some of those additional sun-related risks.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in older people, and few treatments are available for the disease. The

condition leads to an abnormal growth of blood vessels and opaque deposits on the retina, the light-sensitive layer of cells located at the back of the eye. It also causes an increase in the amount of pigment in the retina.

The precise cause of the disease is unknown, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is thought to play a role.

In the study, researchers looked at the association between sunlight exposure and the 10-year risk of age-related macular degeneration among a large group of adults aged 43 to 86 years who were first examined between 1988 and 1990 as part of a medical study.

Researchers found that people who spent more than five hours a day in the summer sun in their teens, 30s, and after age 40 were more than twice as likely to develop early age-related macular degeneration compared with those who reported spending less than two hours per day of sunlight during the same

periods.

In addition, those who got five or more hours per day of summer sun were more than three times as likely to develop increased retinal pigment, a condition commonly associated with age-related macular degeneration.

But the study showed wearing hats or sunglasses at least half of the time reduced the risk of developing deposits on the retina by 50% among those who reported the highest sun exposure levels.

The study also found that people who had more than 10 severe sunburns in their youth were two

and a half times more likely to develop an increase in pigments found in the retina.

No relationships were found between UVB exposure, winter leisure time spent outdoors, skin sun sensitivity, or the number of bad sunburns experienced by the time the study began and the 10year risk of abnormal blood vessel formation or plaque deposits in the retina.

So don’t forget the Three S’s: Sunhat, Sunscreen, and Sunglasses, and enjoy the sunshine safely.

asar demasiado tiempo en el exterior bajo el sol veraniego podría aumentar el riesgo de una enfermedad degenerativa para la visión, según un nuevo estudio.

Los investigadores han averiguado que las personas que pasan mucho tiempo bajo el sol del verano en su adolescencia, y en sus treinta y cuarenta años tienen el doble de probabilidad de desarrollar una forma temprana de degeneración macular relacionada con la edad que aquellos que no se exponían al sol.

Sin embargo, el estudio también sugiere que las medidas de protección, como llevar

sombrero y gafas de sol, pueden reducir dramáticamente algunos de estos riesgos adicionales relacionados con el sol.

La degeneración macular relacionada con la edad es la principal causa de pérdida de visión en los mayores,y del crecimiento de vasos sanguíneos y depósitos opacos en la retina, la capa de células sensibles a la luz localizadas en la parte trasera del ojo. También causa un aumento de pigmentos en la retina.

La causa exacta de esta enfermedad es desconocida, pero se piensa que podría estar relacionada con una combinación de factores genéticos y medioambientales.

La luz solar del verano vinculada con la degeneración macular

E

Pero el estudio demostró que llevar sombreros o gafas de sol al menos durante la mitad del tiempo reducía el riesgo de desarrollar depósitos en la retina en un 50% entre aquellos que reportaron los niveles más altos de exposición solar.

El estudio también descubrió que las personas que habían sufrido más de 10 quemaduras solares graves en su juventud tenían más del doble de probabilidades de desarrollar un aumento en los pigmentos encontrados en la retina.

No se encontró una relación entre la exposición a UVB, el tiempo de ocio en invierno pasado en el exterior, la sensibilidad de la piel al sol o el número de quemaduras solares graves sufridas en el momento en que se inició el estudio, y el riesgo a 10 años de la formación de vasos sanguíneos anormales o depósitos de placa en la retina.

Fiestas organiza un viaje a Algeciras para ver a Malú La delegación de Fiestas del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, dirigida por la concejala Alba Jiménez, está preparando para el próximo 29 de julio un viaje a la vecina localidad de Algeciras para asistir al concierto que ofrecerá la cantante Malú dentro de su gira veraniega “Tour Caos 2016”.

El concierto tendrá lugar en la Plaza de Toros “Las Palomas” de esta localidad gaditana a partir de las diez de la noche. La citada delegación fletará un autobús que saldrá desde Manilva a las siete de la tarde.

Cocktail of the Month PIÑA COLADA

The name piña colada literally means ‘strained pineapple’.

It is a sweet cocktail made with rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, shaken and served over ice. It’s been the national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978 though the earliest known story is of a Puerto Rican pirate boosting his crew’s morale with a drink containing coconut, pineapple and white rum. With his death in 1825, the recipe for the piña colada was lost.

It is revived and alive in Kinsale Bar in Duquesa.

Animales de Compañía en una Comunidad de Vecinos

L

as solicitudes han llegado a mí con respecto a la legalidad, la legitimidad de la tenencia de mascotas en una comunidad. Permítanme decir que no soy más que un veterinario y no un experto legal sobre estos asuntos, pero voy a compartir algunas de las informaciones que he recibido después de preguntar y discutir los siguientes temas con las autoridades locales. Gran parte de la angustia y consternación de algunos propietarios residentes con los animales domésticos que viven en comunidades de casas o apartamentos, es debido a que otros miembros de la comunidad están tomando objeción a la tenencia de animales domésticos, y están tratando de prohibir o limitar dichas existencias compartidos entre algunos vecinos y los animales domésticos. ¿Qué pueden los que viven en estas comunidades hacer con esos animales que eligen para compartir su vida con? Esto se convierte en un delicado problema si no pegajosa, especialmente si han convivido los animales con ellos y lo han hecho por todos los años que han poseído la propiedad en una comunidad, cuando los nuevos propietarios llegan y toman ob-

jeción a la presencia de estos animales domésticos.

En primer lugar, Esta en la Constitución/Estatutos de una Comunidad de Vecinos mención alguna respecto a si se permiten mascotas o no, si no se menciona la prohibición de ellos en una comunidad no existe una base sobre la prohibición de ellos. Si no hay ninguna mención respecto a la tenencia de mascotas a continuación para modificar la constitución o estatutos de esa comunidad deben ser discutidos en la Reunión Anual de Propietarios o Junta Anual Ordinaria y, a continuación, la votación debe ser tomada con respecto a cualquier propuesta de este tipo.

Tiene que haber una mención en dicha Constitución/Estatutos qué tipo de una mayoría está requerida para adoptar una nueva política, ya sea una mayoría simple, mayoría absoluta - con una definición de lo que constituye la mayoría absoluta para una comunidad específica - o una unanimidad. Un voto unánime puede ser necesario en caso de vuelco de una política previamente aceptada de una comunidad de propietarios, una vez más debe estudiar toda la letra pequeña en la formulación de políticas y tiene que

ser descrito en el reglamento de una determinada comunidad de propietarios. No existe una política pueden reemplazar las leyes y reglamentos de un área geopolítica específica, ya sea que, en la región autónoma, la provincia, municipio, unión nacional o europeo. La normativa andaluza y española sobre la tenencia de animales y la prevención de la crueldad a ellos establece que los propietarios son responsables de mantener a sus mascotas bajo control, y que tienen que limpiar que hacen en ensuciar las zonas comunes. Cualquier acto de crueldad dirigida a ellos es un delito sancionable y cualquier intento de eliminarlos, es decir, envenenamiento, está prohibido por ley. Una persona se le permite levantar barreras para impedir la entrada de visitantes inoportunos en su propiedad. Con respecto al lenguaje, no específica en las leyes que rigen donde los gatos pueden o no pueden ser admitidos en las zonas comunes sería, por supuesto, abierto a la interpretación, a menos que esté especificado como la política de la comunidad. Hay ciertos municipios del entorno de Andalucía (y España) que están tratando de establecer el análisis del ADN de

la materia fecal canina con el fin de identificar al infractor y por lo tanto bien al propietario por no limpiar después de que un perro defeca y el dueño no lo recoge.

Esto no ha entrado en vigor completa como la política todavía y es de dudosa legalidad, ya que requeriría un ADN registro / genética de la población canina de un área determinada. Tan insostenible como esto pueda parecer, especialmente en un entorno rural o semi-rural, donde los zorros, tejones, meloncillos, jinetas, viven y deambulan libremente y son especies protegidas, este es el caso y de acuerdo con

equests have come to me regarding the legality, the legitimacy of keeping of pets in a community. Let me state that I am only a veterinarian and not a legal expert on these matters but I will share some of the information that I have received upon enquiring and discussing the following issues with local authorities. Much to the distress and dismay of some resident owners

with pets living in communities of homes or apartments, that others in that community are taking objection to the keeping of pets, and are attempting to prohibit or limit said shared existences between people and domesticated animals. What can those living in such communities do with those pets they choose to share their lives with? This becomes a delicate if not sticky issue, especially if they have kept animals

with them and have done so for all the years they have owned property in a community, when new owners arrive and take objection to the presence of these pets.

First, do the constitution/rules/statutes of a given community make any mention regarding whether pets are allowed or not, if there is no mention prohibiting them in a community there is no basis on banning them. If there is no mention regarding the keeping of pets then to modify the constitution or statutes of that community must be discussed at the Annual General Meeting (A.G.M.) and then a vote must be taken regarding any such proposal. There has to be mention in said constitution/statutes what kind of a majority is required to adopt a new policy, whether that be a simple majority, absolute majority – with a definition of what constitutes an absolute majority for a specific community – or a unanimous vote. A unanimous vote may be necessary in the case of overturning a previously accepted policy of a community of owner’s, again all of the small print on policy

making has to be described in the regulations of a given community of property owners. No policy can supersede the laws and regulations of a specific geopolitical area, be that municipal, provincial, autonomous region, national or European union. The Andalusian and Spanish regulations on keeping animals and prevention of cruelty to them states that the owners are responsible for keeping their pets under control, and that they have to clean up the messes they make in soiling public areas. Any act of cruelty directed to them is a sanctionable offense and any attempt to eliminate them, i.e. poisoning, is prohibited by law. A person is permitted to erect barriers to prevent the entrance of unwelcomed visitors into their property. With regard to the unspecific language in statutes governing where cats may or may not be allowed into shared areas would be, of course, open to interpretation, unless so specified as community policy. There are certain municipalities around Andalucia (and Spain) that are attempting to institute DNA analysis

of canine fecal material so as to identify the offender and thereby fine the owner for not cleaning up after the mess that their dog has made. This has not come into full effect as policy yet and is of questionable legality as it would require a DNA/genetic registry of the canine population of a given area.

As untenable as this may seem, especially in a rural or semi-rural environment where foxes, badgers, meloncillos (mongoose-like animal), jinetas (civet-like cat), live and roam freely and are protected species, this is the case and according to some of my contacts cats have to be confined or at least have their free movement controlled, again this may be a grey area that needs to be clarified within a specific community. At the time of writing this there are still some answers I am waiting for from more official sources, that said at this point this remains an open ended issue which, hopefully will become clearer with reception of the pertinent information which will be published in next months instalment.

a habido mucha publicidad en la prensa recientemente sobre el tema de que ‘la grasa no aumenta nuestra grasa corporal’.

La gente que sabe, como entrenadores físicos y nutricionistas han estado promoviendo comer "grasas buenas" durante muchos años, como el aguacate, aceite de oliva, coco, nueces y semillas.

Sabemos que no todas las grasas son iguales, pero sabemos que la gente que adopta dietas bajas en grasa o productos bajos en grasa puede crear 'desastrosas consecuen-

cias para su salud’.

Durante más de 30 años, la industria alimenticia y de salud ha promovido la consumición de alimentos bajos en grasa, pero de acuerdo con el Dr. Aseem Malhotra, asesor cardiólogo, "este es uno de los mayores errores en la historia de la medicina moderna '.

La proteína también es saciadora, detiene la sensación de hambre y proporciona los aminoácidos esenciales que son los bloques de construcción para la reparación de daños diarios y mantener fuertes a nuestros músculos ayudan a equilibrar los picos en los niveles de azúcar del cuerpo.

Eat fat to get slim, don’t fear fat, fat is your friend!

here has been much hype in the press recently about ‘fat not making you fat’.

The people in the know, such as physical trainers and nutritionists have been promoting eating ‘good fats’ for many years, such as avocados, olive oil, coconut, nuts and seeds.

We know that not all fat is equal, but we know people who switch to low fat diets or low fat products can create ‘disastrous health consequences’.

For over 30 years the food and health industry has been promoting low fat foods, but according to Dr Aseem Malhotra, consultant cardiologist ,’this is one the biggest mistakes in modern medical history’.

Current efforts have failed to reduce the amount of obesity in our society, the proof being that obesity levels are higher than ever before and show no signs of reducing despite the best efforts of the government and its scientists.

Processed foods and items labelled ‘low fat’, ‘light’ ,and ‘low cholesterol’, should be avoided at all costs by all people, and people with Type 2 Diabetes should eat a fat rich diet and not one based on carbohydrates.

Foods such as full fat dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese, butter) that have previously been accused of causing heart disease and high cholesterol have now been shown to actually protect the heart.

We know the number one food that causes obesity is SUGAR and not fats. Filling yourself with food that has a high sugar

content or turns into excess sugar when used within the body can have a massive impact on how our bodies look and how it performs on the inside.

Not only is sugar a killer, but so is overeating.

Sugar leaves you wanting more, whether it be sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks, sugar can quickly become something we need more of, and of course the more we have the more we want, the body will crave it and quickly become very sensitive to it, which can cause some real health concerns.

One in four people within the UK are currently suffering from weight issues, and this problem is growing by the year.

Good fats fill you up, give food its taste and contain lots of nutrients that help repair and protect the body. It will also give the body energy.

Protein fills you up, stops the hunger pangs and provides the essential amino acids that are the building blocks for repairing daily damage and keeping our muscles strong and will also help balance out the spikes in the body’s sugar levels.

Sugar will give you an instant energy hit, but quickly drops off urging your body to want more. The human body can quickly become sensitised to sugar, when this happens one of the first things we notice is an increase in the waist size, other issues can follow fast after that.

90% of what your body looks like is down to what you eat; exercise is only 10% of that process.

The A-Z of Knee Pain - Part One This month Bodyworks Health Clinic present the first of a two-part A to Z of Knee Pain.

We think you’ll find it both interesting and useful, and don’t miss the second part in the July edition of The Resident.

The knee is the largest joint in the body and one of the most complex, making it a very vulnerable joint! It is made up of 4 bones, more than 20 muscles each with a tendon, 4 major ligaments as well as many little ones, and at least 3 layers of cartilage.

Arthroscopy

An operation to “clean” inside the knee joint. Results of a 10 year study reports that arthroscopic surgery is one of the most unnecessary operations performed today, as the results are no better than placebo surgery!! Sadly, despite this monumental finding, thousands undergo this operation each year.

Bakers Cyst

Swelling at the back of the knee, which is a distress signal from the knee, can make walking uncomfortable and it compromises the knee joint function.

Extension

Getting the knee straight is of critical importance and is often the first movement to go. This is what causes the limp. A bent knee can then cause hip and back problems as the whole lower body is out of alignment. Many leg length discrepancies are misdiagnosed and are really lack of knee extension. Special knee extension equipment from America, reduces the pain and makes this an achievable outcome!

Feet

Your knee is the biggest shock absorber for every step you take, so if there is too much shock or twist from the feet, the knee is going to take the strain. Correct support at the feet can relieve the strain on the joint, reduce pain and prevent the situation getting worse.

Glucosamine

This helps lubricate the joints, making movement less painful and for maximum effect it is best taken with Chondroitin.

Hips

Pain from the hips is often referred to the knee. Make sure both are checked before starting treatment!

Researchers in Nashville say that rubbing a cream containing capsaicin is “significantly effective” for osteoarthritis of the knee as the heat distracts the nerves from the pain.

Visceral fat (the fat around the tummy) has been shown to be very toxic to all joints but the knee is particularly vulnerable.

More weight also puts more load on weight bearing joints like the knee.

Knee Movement

If your knee can’t get straight, then this puts huge strain on the joint and stops the muscles working properly. If you can’t get the knee straight, it will not bend properly! There are exercises to help get your knee straight (see the paper).

Limping

If not corrected, limping can cause problems in the back and hips. These problems can’t be resolved until the knee problem is fixed.

Magnetic Resonance Therapy

A German technology for the treatment of osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease. This treatment strengthens and reinforces the cartilage, ligaments and tendons in the joint.

It reduces inflammation and pain, allowing you to get your exercise regime going. We have over a 90% success rate for knees!

Nothing

Unfortunately waiting for it to “go away on its own” doesn’t always work, especially as you get older. It is always best to be proactive, the sooner you act the easier, quicker and more effective treatment is.

Numbs the pain and reduces swelling. Wrap an ice pack or frozen peas in a damp cloth, to prevent ice burns, and apply for 10 minutes.

When the joint has become so damaged, it is replaced with a titanium joint. They are often refused if you are “too young” as they have a lifespan of 5 – 10 years depending on activity levels. Consider this as a last resort!
