EDITORIAL Una vez más me siento delante de mi teclado escribiendo el editorial de este mes e intentando encontrar aspectos y puntos positivos en estos tiempos.

Después de pensar sobre ello, a menos cinco minutos, me sorprendo de cuántas cosas me vienen a la mente. Así, que para dar un rayo de luz, aquí van unos cuantos puntos.

Lo primero de lo primero, hace ya algunos meses comenté sobre la subida del gasoil, disparándose y sobrepasando el precio incluso de la gasolina, pues bien, ahora me alegro de que eso haya pasado y vuelve a lo que debería haber sido, unos pocos céntimos más bajo que la gasolina, precios que no se han visto durante años.

Siguiendo el asunto del combustible, el Gobierno ha anunciado que a partir del próximo mes la bombona de butano bajará considerablemente, ¡bajará tres euros!

La Compañía Telefónica también acaba de anunciar descuentos de hasta el 50% a aquellos clientes desempleados, y los grandes hipermercados se han dado cuenta que aquellos días de boom se han esfumado y han indicado que mirarán reducir los precios en productos básicos.

En cuanto a los asuntos financieros, para todos aquellos que sufren con el cambio en divisas libra esterlinas/euros, para aquellos cuyas pensiones se han visto reducidas, para aquellos de nosotros cuyo ingreso y ahorro son en euros, hay buenas noticias, en caso de que tengamos que volver a nuestro viejo país, los billetes de aviones, los coches de alquiler y el alojamiento es mucho más barato que en el pasado.

Apartándonos de los asuntos económicos, está el tiempo. ¡Vale...!, que hemos tenido un invierno no muy bueno (¡intenta quejarte a alguien que viene de Reino Unido y verás lo que te dice!). Este fin de semana oficialmente es el primer día de la primavera y con el sol fuera y las temperaturas sobre 20 grados, le puede ayudar a sentirse mejor. Levántese y vaya al campo si puede, y disfrute del colorido y del aroma de la primavera . ¡Oh!, no olvide cambiar su reloj a final de este mes retrasando una hora para que podemos disfrutar más de la luz del día.

Bueno, como estoy tan positivo y tan optimista creo que voy a gastar un par de euros en la lotería. Deseenme suerte, como yo les deseo a todos y hasta el próximo mes.

Once again I find myself sat at the keyboard composing this month’s editorial and trying to find some positive points to make in these testing times.

After considerable thought, well at least five minutes, I was surprised to discover just how many I could come up with. So in the interests of spreading a little happiness here are a few of them.

First things first, some months ago I commented on how, almost overnight, the cost of diesel had shot up until it surpassed that of petrol, well I’m happy to report that sorry state has passed and it’s back down where it should be, a few cents below petrol and, at prices not seen for a few years.

Still on the subject of fuel, the government has stated that next month the cost of gas will be substantially reduced, knocking some three euros off the standard ‘bombona’.

Those jolly nice people at Telefonica have just announced that they will be giving discounts of 50% to their clients who find themselves unemployed, and the major supermarkets have finally acknowledged that the boom days are over and have indicated that they will look at reducing prices, particularly on staple items.

Still on matters financial, whilst I have nothing but sympathy for those suffering from the poor sterling/euro exchange rate, diminished pensions, etc., for those of us whose income and savings are in euros, it’s great news, particularly if we have to pop back to the ‘old country’, making air fares, hire cars and accommodation much cheaper than in the past.

Getting away from economic matters, there’s the weather, OK so we’ve had a rough winter (try complaining to anyone from the UK though and see if you get any sympathy) but this weekend is officially the first day of Spring, and with the sun out and temperatures nudging the 20s you can’t help but feel positive. Just get up into the campo if you can and enjoy the riot of colours and heady scents of spring as nature shrugs off its winter coat. Oh, and don’t forget that the clocks go forward at the end of this month heralding in those lighter evenings.

Good grief, I’ve left myself feeling so positive and optimistic I think I’ll go and put a couple of euros on the lottery.

Tiro con arco - San Roque, en la élite nacional La Ciudad de San Roque ya puede presumir de contar con una de las mejores escuelas de tiro con arco de base de toda Andalucía. Así lo reconoció este fin de semana en Jaén el entrenador y seleccionador nacional de arco recurvo, Cho Hyung Mok, que ha participado en una concentración de la Federación Andaluza de Tiro en la que han tomado parte los veinte mejores arqueros de la región andaluza, de los que tres son sanroqueños.

Los arqueros sanroqueños Chema Morilla, Dani Delgado y Juan Luis González han sido convocados por los técnicos de la Federación Andaluza de Tiro con Arco, para tomar parte en la concentración de jóvenes promesas.

Los objetivos de esta concentración, que se ha

celebrado en el complejo deportivo de La Garza ubicado en Linares (Jaén), son continuar la preparación física y técnica de todos los arqueros, así como ir entrenando de cara a los próximos campeonatos de España de tiro en sala o al aire libre que se celebrarán en los próximos meses.

El seleccionador del equipo español se deshizo en elogios hacia el trabajo del técnico sanroqueño y deportistas, ya que considera que está siendo muy positivo el trabajo que están desempeñando, aunque como buen entrenador dejó unos consejos a los tres chavales de la cantera del tiro con arco local, como por ejemplo, la mejora de los ejercicios físicos y tirar a diana más del tiempo establecido de cuatro horas semanales.

San Roque - La Línea

Muere el Alcalde de San Roque El Alcalde de San Roque, José Vázquez Castillo, murió de un paro cardiaco mientras estaba siendo intervenido en el Hospital de Málaga.

El Sr. Vázquez ha estado

enfermo durante algún tiempo debido a un cáncer de pulmón, por su enfermedad cedió la Alcadía de manera provisional a José Antonio Ledesma, líder de USR y primer teniente de

alcalde.

El Sr. Ledesma declara tres días de luto oficial y cancela el programa de carnaval en la ciudad.

Biografía de José Vázquez, alcalde de San Roque José Vázquez Castillo nació el 20 de junio de 1939 en Tánger, si bien casi toda su vida la pasó en San Roque. Casado y con cinco hijos, tenía como profesión la de empresario, si bien no la ejercía desde hace ya varios años.

A finales de los años sesenta del pasado siglo sus ideas progresistas lo llevaron al Partido Socialista Popular de Enrique Tierno Galván, una formación que operó en la clandestinidad hasta la muerte de Franco. Militó en el PSP hasta poco después de las primeras elecciones democráticas parlamentarias, cuando el partido de Tierno Galván se unificó con el PSOE. Ya en las listas del PSOE, en las elecciones municipales de 1979, llegó por primera vez al Ayuntamiento como concejal.

En ese primer Consistorio democrático tuvo bajo su responsabilidad las áreas de Deportes, Hacienda, Patrimonio y Recursos Humanos.

En 1983 decidió salir de la primera escena política, a la que volvió en 1999 como cabeza de la lista del PSOE al Ayuntamiento. En esos comicios ganó la Alcaldía, pero unos meses después pasó a la oposición tras una moción de censura encabezada por Fernando Palma, quien ahora es portavoz municipal del PP. En 2003 volvió a presentarse a las elecciones como número

uno en la lista del PSOE, y tras un acuerdo con USR, retomó la Alcaldía. En 2007 repitió como cabeza de lista de su formación, y tras un pacto con USR y, más tarde con el PA, retuvo el bastón de mando. Durante varios meses, y debido a una enfermedad, cedió la Alcaldía de manera provisional a José Antonio Ledesma, líder de USR y primer teniente de alcalde.

San Roque Mayor José Vázquez dies Archery - San Roque in the national elite San Roque can now proudly boast to having one of the best archery schools in all Andalucia.

This was recognised this month by the Spanish national recurve bow team coach, Cho Hyung Mok, at a meeting in Jaen in which twenty of the best young archers from across the region, including three from San Roque, took part.

These three archers, Chema Morilla, Dani Delgado and Juan Luis González, had been summoned by coaches from the Andalucian Archery Federation,

to take part in a programme to foster promising young talent.

The meeting was held in order to continue the archers physical and technical preparations and training for the forthcoming Spanish championships, both indoor and open air, which will be held in the coming months.

Before departing, the Spanish coach took time to praise the work of the San Roque archers and to pass on a few words of advice, such as improving their physical fitness and to get in at least 4 hours shooting a week.

Mayor of San Roque, José Vázquez Castillo, has died of a heart attack whilst undergoing an operation in a Malaga hospital.

Mr Vazquez had been ill for some

time with lung cancer which had led to his deputy, José Antonio Ledesma, frequently standing in for him.

Mr Ledesma, called for three

days of official mourning, which also led to the cancellation of the town’s Carnaval programme.

Biography: José Vázquez José Vázquez Castillo was born on June 20, 1939 in Tangier, but spent nearly all his life in San Roque. Married with five children, he was a businessman, although he had been retired for several years.

In the late 1960’s he followed the ideology of Enrique Tierno Galvan’s, Partido Socialista Popular, which operated in secret until the death of Franco.

Vázquez was a member of the PSP until after the first democratic

parliamentary elections when the party merged with the PSOE. He featured on the list of the PSOE in the municipal elections of 1979, and in that first democratic government he was councillor for Sports, Finance, Heritage and Human Resources.

In 1983 he decided to quit the political scene, returning in 1999 as head of the PSOE list in the Town Hall.

In these elections he was elected mayor, but just a few months into

his term he was relegated to the opposition after a censure motion, headed by Fernando Palma.

In 2003 he headed the list for the PSOE, and after a pact with the USR, he took over as Mayor.

This process was repeated in 2007, and following a pact with USR and later with the PA, held the Mayor’s baton. For several months, due to illness, José Antonio Ledesma, USR leader, had taken on the Mayoral duties.

Fernando Palma, nuevo alcalde de San Roque Jueves 12 de marzo, Fernando Palma Castillo, del PP, ha sido investido alcalde de la Ciudad de San Roque durante un Pleno Extraordinario de la Corporación.

En sus primeras palabras en el cargo, Palma recordó a su antecesor José Vázquez y dijo que sus prioridades serán garantizar el sueldo de los trabajadores municipales, ayudar a las familias más necesitadas y

apoyar a las pequeñas y medianas empresas. También solicitó a todos los concejales su apoyo para sacar a San Roque “de la situación problemática en la que se encuentra”.

Fernando Palma contó con los siete votos de su formación, que fueron suficientes para su nombramiento porque el resto de los partidos (PSOE, USR, PIVG y PA) presentaron sus propios candidatos y, al no

lograrse la mayoría absoluta, la Ley prevé que la Alcaldía corresponde a la lista más votada por los ciudadanos en los comicios municipales, que se desarrollaron en 2007.

La votación se realizó bajo la presidencia de la segunda teniente de alcalde, Rosa Macías, y se presentaron como candidatos: Fernando Palma, por el PP; Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, por el PSOE; José

En 1996 vuelve a San Roque por circunstancias familiares, y sigue aquí desde entonces. En 1998 entra en política con el GIL, figurando como número dos de la candidatura de ese partido a las elecciones de 1999. El año 2000

fue agitado en la vida política de Fernando Palma. Primero, el cabeza de lista del GIL se marcha y Palma pasa a liderar a ese grupo de concejales, que se constituye como Grupo Mixto.

En segundo lugar, se acuerda la famosa moción de censura entre el PP, USR y Grupo Mixto, y se le elige alcalde, permaneciendo en el cargo hasta las elecciones de 2003. En los comicios de 2003 y de 2007 se presentó como cabeza de lista de la candidatura del PP, que a pesar de obtener el mayor número de votos se quedó en ambos casos en la oposición en virtud de los pactos entre PSOE y USR. Así,

tanto en esta legislatura como en la pasada ha ejercido de portavoz del Grupo Municipal del PP. Además, Fernando

Antonio Ledesma, por USR; Jesús Mayoral, por el PIVG; y Manuel Melero, por el PA. Cada concejal depositó su papeleta en una urna, y el resultado fue el siguiente: Fernando Palma, siete votos; Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, seis votos; José Antonio Ledesma, cuatro votos; Jesús Mayoral, dos votos; Manuel The Animal in Need organisation Melero, un voto; y un voto en which operates the dog refuge in La Linea runs regular fund raising blanco. events. New Mayor for San Roque PP Councillor Fernando Palma Castillo, was invested as Mayor of San Roque on the 12th March after an election to replace the late José Vázquez, the previous mayor who died at the beginning of the month.

In his first words as mayor, Palma paid homage to his predecessor and stated that his priorities

will be ensuring the payment of municipal workers’ salaries, helping those families in most need, and providing support for small and medium businesses in the municipality. He also implored all council members to give their utmost support to San Roque in these problematic times.

As no party has overall majority

in San Roque, each party (PP, PSOE, USR, and PIVG PA) fielded a candidate for Mayor, with Fernando Palma narrowly winning with seven points ahead of Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix (six votes), José Antonio Ledesma (four votes), Jesús Mayoral (two votes), and Manuel Melero (one vote), there was one blank vote.

The vote was held under the chairmanship of the second deputy mayor, Rosa Macias, who has created controversy by casting her vote in favour of the PP candidate Fernando Palma, which has led to calls from her PSOE colleagues for her expulsion from the party.

The IES Sierra Almenara secondary school in Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro is celebrating the 6th edition of the classic ‘People’s Race’, a fun run to be held on the 3rd April.

This race is run through the streets of Guadiaro and Pueblo Nuevo with the finishing line at the Sierra Almenara school.

The poster for this year’s event was designed by Luke Zerh, a 4th year pupil at the School.

Juan Sánchez dejará de ser alcalde aunque continuará como concejal del equipo de gobierno Juan Sánchez presentó el pasado viernes su dimisión como alcalde de Casares ante el Consejo Local de Izquierda Unida, una decisión que según manifestó el primer edil no se debe al cansancio sino para poder dedicar más tiempo a la Presidencia de la Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol .

La decisión, que aunque ha sido ampliamente meditada y consensuada, se hizo pública en la asamblea local de Izquierda Unida el pasado viernes, llevará a la primera teniente de Alcalde, Antonia Morera, a convertirse en la primera mujer alcaldesa de la historia de Casares.

Antonia Morera cuenta con el apoyo de todos los miembros del equipo de gobierno local así como del Consejo Local y de la Asamblea de Izquierda

Unida.

Aunque todavía no se ha puesto fecha al pleno de organización donde se hará oficial la renuncia y el nombramiento de la nueva alcaldesa, desde el Consistorio se prevé que este sea a mediados del próximo mes de Abril.

Juan Sánchez, ha declarado esta mañana ante los micrófonos de Radio Casares que aunque deja la alcaldía no dejará el equipo de gobierno por lo que pasará a ser concejal con las delegaciones que le designe la nueva alcaldesa.

Por su parte, Antonia Morera se ha referido a la generosidad del alcalde, pues a pesar de la amplia mayoría que lo llevó a la alcaldía abandona su cargo por considerar necesaria una renovación política en la localidad.

Juan Sanchez steps down as Mayor of Casares Juan Sanchez, the Izquierda Unida party Mayor of Casares, has stepped down from his role at the head of the Council, stating his decision will allow him more time to devote to his position as President of the western Costa del Sol association of municipalities, the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental.

The decision has been carefully considered, and it has resulted in Casares gaining its first lady Mayor, with the former deputy mayor, Antonia Morera, stepping into the role, with the support of all her party members.

Although no date has been set for the

formal resignation and appointment of the new mayor, it is expected to be some time around the middle of April.

In an interview on Radio Casares, Juan Sanchez stated that although he was stepping down as mayor, he will not be leaving the governing council, and will be happy to accept any roles or departments designated to him by the new mayoress.

For her part, Antonia Morera, referred to the generosity of Señor Sanchez, who despite the huge majority that gave him the leadership, was willing to step down in the interests of political rejuvenation in the municipality.

Premios Blas Infante

Durante la entrega de estos premios el alcalde, Juan Sánchez, dijo que este año es todavía más difícil de explicar que un pueblo como Casares (acaba de llegar a los 5.000 habitantes) destina 91.000 euros a cooperación cuando aquí también nos hace falta, pero es que “hay muchas personas en el mundo cuya supervivencia depende de esta ayuda”. Y que independientemente de la ideología de cada uno de los habitantes Casares este es un pueblo con 5000 personas y un solo corazón.

El Premio Casares por la Humanidad, dotado con 20.420 €, servirá para la construcción de 4 aulas en la Escuela Kilimanjaro de Tanzania. Un proyecto de la organización Tierra de Amani de Mijas con el que se beneficiaran anualmente más de 100 niños huérfanos o de familias desfavorecidas.

Se le ha concedido el total solicitado, 6.235 €, a Caritas Mariana España “Nakupenda Sana”, de Fuengirola, para el proyecto “Libertad: luchas por liberar a las niñas de Gambia de la esclavitud de la ignorancia”, que pretende la integración social y laboral de 50 niñas sin recursos mediante su escolarización.

También se ha subvencionado completamente, con 5.445,50 €, la construcción de un pozo de agua en la aldea de Kakola, en la zona norte de Sierra Leona, que llevará a cabo la Fundación El Compromiso. Se ubicará en terrenos de la escuela con lo que se beneficiarán unos 300 niños y niñas (y sus familias), que podrán asistir a clase al mismo tiempo que cumplen con su tarea diaria de llevar el agua a sus casa.

Los premios Casares Solidario también servirán para construir cocinas ahorradoras de leña para 151 familias del municipio de Uspatán en Guatemala.

La Asociación YOK, de Madrid, también será subvencionada con 17.500 €, que destinará a la construcción de un centro de formación en Kinshasa (R.D. El Congo), en el que 200 chicas jóvenes, en situación de riesgo, podrán tener acceso a formación, ayuda y promoción de la mujer.

Educación para el desarrollo Por su parte, a los premios Casares por España y Casares por Andalucía que esta edición, por primera vez, sirven para subvencionar proyectos de educación para el desarrollo en los ámbitos nacional y regional, respectivamente, se ha destina algo más de 23.000 euros.

El premio Casares por Andalucía recayó en el proyecto de “Mediación en el Medio Abierto” de la Coordinara contra la Droga “Barrio Vivo” de Algeciras, al que se subvenciona con 13.312 € para la contratación de personal cualificado que medie entre menores y la familia, menores y la escuela. Promoviendo la educación para la salud y la resolución de conflictos de forma pacífica.

Y Casares por España servirá para que niños y niñas de la calle de Fortaleza (Brasil) puedan visitar la provincia de Málaga donde darán a conocer la situación de la infancia en su país y sensibilizarán a la población sobre las causas de la pobreza. La subvención, de 10.000 €, servirá para costear los viajes desde Brasil a Málaga.

Vecinos y Amigos de Marina de Casares Club This club (Neighbours and Friends of Marina de Casares) was formed in July 2008 with a view to providing a focal point for local English and Spanish speaking residents to integrate and participate in a number of social activities, including Spanish and English lessons as well as painting and other classes.

Manilva - Programa de dinamización de senderos La delegación de Medioambiente del ayuntamiento de Manilva, esta ultimado los detalles para la puesta en marcha de la campaña de Dinamización de senderos 2009, para la temporada de primavera.

Esta convocatoria ofrece diferentes rutas por distintos municipios de la provincia y están adaptadas a los distintos niveles de condición física.

La primera de las salidas, será el próximo 29 de marzo.

Este programa está impulsado por la Diputación Provincial de Málaga y en él participa Manilva y otros municipios de la provincia.

La finalidad de esta iniciativa está en consonancia con la práctica deportiva y el respeto al

Para la práctica del senderismo es muy importante que los participantes utilicen un material deportivo aconsejable

basado fundamentalmente en ir provistos de calzado apropiado de montaña, ropa adecuada según la época del año. También tendrán que llevar agua y comida para la jornada.

I Concurso de logotipo Delegación de educación La semana pasada, el edil de educación Diego Urieta junto a representantes de los diferentes centros educativos del municipio y miembros de la Asociaciones de Padres y Madres de Alumnos de las diferentes dependencias educativas han elegido el logotipo ganador del concurso convocado por esta concejalía.

El jurado ha estado formado por José Díaz Núñez y Maria del Carmen López del Colegio Maicandil, Antonio González y Ana María Martínez del Instituto las Viñas; Magdalena Crespí y María Linares del Colegio Pablo Picasso; Ana Torroba y Juan Antonio de la Torre del Colegio San Luis de Sabinillas, la técnico del Ayuntamiento Susana Lema, el director de Banesto José Domínguez y el concejal de Educación Diego Urieta.

Los aspectos que se han tenido en cuenta a la hora de elegir el ganador han sido el nivel de estudios de los participantes, la creatividad, la calidad del dibujo, la complejidad de la técnica utilizada y la representación gráfica del tema del concurso.

Tal y como explica el concejal de educación, Diego Urieta esta iniciativa surgió con el fin de que fueran los propios alumnos del término los que creasen la nueva imagen de esta delegación.

En total han participado 399 alumnos de los colegios Pablo Picasso de Manilva, con un total de 73 dibujos, San Luis de Sabinillas, con 152, Maicandil, con 23 alumnos participantes y del Instituto Las viñas, con 151.

La organización estableció dos premios. Uno de carácter colectivo, para el centro con mayor número de logotipos presentados consistente en una enciclopedia Espasa donada por la entidad bancaria BANESTO. En esta categoría el ganador ha sido el Colegio Público San Luis de Sabinillas.

El director de la oficina de Banesto en Sabinillas, José Domínguez, ha sido el encargado de hacer entrega de este premio al centro ganador.

Por otro lado, el logotipo ganador y por tanto que desde ahora representará la imagen de la Concejalía ha sido el realizado por Aaron García del curso 4º B del Colegio San Luis de Sabinillas.

Tras la elección de la nueva imagen de la delegación, el propio Diego Urieta, junto a la directora de área de Educación, Eva Galindo se han desplazado hasta el Colegio San Luis de Sabinillas para entregar el premio, consistente en una bicicleta, al alumno ganador, que se ha mostrado feliz con este regalo.

Education Department logo contest Last week saw the judging of the competition to design a logo for Manilva’s Education Department.

The competition was open to students from Manilva’s schools, and some 399 entries were submitted, with 73 from Pablo Picasso in Manilva, 152 from San Luis de Sabinillas, 23 from Maicandil, and 151 from the Instituto Las viñas.

The jury comprised José Díaz Núñez and Maria del Carmen López from Maicandil school, Antonio González and Ana María Martínez from the Instituto las Viñas; Magdalena Crespí and María Linares from Colegio Pablo Picasso; Ana Torroba and Juan Antonio de la Torre from Colegio San Luis de Sabinillas, Susana Lema from the Town Hall’s Education Department, José

Domínguez, Director of Banesto and the Councillor for Education, Diego Urieta.

The judges took into account the age of the participants, creativity, quality of drawing, complexity of the design and subject relevance to the theme.

There were two awards: The Encyclopedia Espasa donated by the Banesto Bank and awarded to the school which submitted the most entries. This prize was won by the San Luis de Sabinillas School.

The second prize of a bicycle went to the winning entry, and was awarded to Aaron Garcia, who is in the 4th year at the San Luis de Sabinillas school.

Aaron’s winning design will also be adopted as the logo which will represent Manilva’s Education Department.

Los residentes de Punta Chullera exigen respuestas a problemas de infraestructura Una docena de residentes de Punta Chullera visitaron el Ayuntamiento de Manilva la semana pasada para protestar sobre el retraso en las obras de infraestructura en su urbanización, el retraso en estas obras han dejado calles intransitables para vehículos o para viandantes durante las lluvias.

Demandaron ver a la Alcaldesa y le pidieron una explicación del porqué de tal retraso, y del paro en las obras en cuestión.

El año pasado, se llegó un acuerdo con los residentes, para la mejora de las viales que se encuentran en muy mal estado. Tras diversas gestiones, finalmente se acordó que el

Ayuntamiento pagaría un 40% del coste total de la actuación, cuyo importe casi alcanzaba los dos millones de euros, mientras que los vecinos sufragarían el 60% restante.

Los trabajos empezaron la pasada primavera a un ritmo muy bueno, pero desde entonces han habido retrasos y no cumplimientos de fecha de finalización de obra con el contratista debido a pagos no efectuados por el retraso y paro en las obras.

La alcaldesa, Antonia Muñoz, junto con el concejal de Infraestructura y Obras, Mario Jiménez y el Edil de Hacienda, Diego Díaz acordaron reunirse con los residentes, incluyendo

el vice-presidente de la comunidad de propietarios, José Manuel Chaparro, para explicarles las negociaciones recientemente con el contratista Volconso, y la alcaldesa aseguró que los trabajos se empezarán la semana que viene. También entregó al Señor Chaparro una lista de residentes que todavía no han pagado su cuota correspondiente, y mencionó que alrededor del 50% de la cuota a pagar por los residentes todavía no han sido ingresadas.

Durante el encuentro, la oposición José Diego Jimenez (PSOE) y Paqui Tomé (PP) esuvieron presentes.

Manilva contará en breve con un retén de bomberos La alcaldesa de Manilva y delegada de seguridad ciudadana, Antonia Muñoz, ha comunicado que los trabajos del futuro retén de bomberos de la localidad se iniciarán esta semana y tendrán un plazo de ejecución de mes y medio.

Precisamente, el concejal de Infraestructura y obras, Mario Jiménez, se reunió a final de la semana pasada con el director del área de bomberos de la diputación provincial de Málaga, el jefe provincial del consorcio de bomberos y varios

responsables de los parques de bomberos de Antequera y Ronda. Cabe recordar, que el retén de nuestro municipio dependerá directamente del de esta última localidad.

Jiménez informó que se va a construir un aparcamiento para dos camiones autobomba, además de una vivienda acondicionada para el personal que imparta los servicios en el retén. Todo ello irá ubicado en el complejo donde se ubica el parking público y la policía local.

Punta Chullera residents demand answers to infrastructure woes Dozens of Punta Chullera residents visited Manilva Town Hall last week to protest about the continued delays to infrastructure works on their urbanisation which has left many of the roads impassable during wet weather either by vehicle or on foot.

They demanded to see the Mayoress for an explanation as to why, after a number of assurances in the past, work had halted and there appeared to be no end in sight for their misery.

Last year, the current administration drew up an agreement with residents, to implement improvements to the infrastructure which had fallen into serious disrepair over the

years, and to bear 40% of the estimated 2 million euro costs, the remaining 60% to be paid by property owners on the urbanisation.

Works got off to a flying start last spring, but since then there have been delays, and missed deadlines, with the contractor, citing non-payment of stage payments for the lack of progress and ultimate halt to the works.

The Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz along with her councillors for Infrastructure & Public Works, and Finance, Mario Jimenez, and Diego Diaz respectively, agreed to meet with a delegation from the protesters, including the vicepresident of the community of

The councillor reported that Manilva will provide stationing for two fire trucks along with facilities for staff and firefighters. These will be based next to the Local Police Station in Manilva.

Estepona’s museums now open morning and afternoon Estepona’s Cultural Department has announced new opening hours for the town’s museums.

As of the beginning of March the three municipal museums: Bullfighting; Paleaontology; and

Ethnographic can be visited seven days a week in the mornings from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and afternoons from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm, admission is free of charge.

It is hoped that these changes will give locals and visitors more opportunities to make the most of local cultural resources.

Calles San Cayetano and San Jose closed for works Estepona’s Calles San Cayetano and San Jose will be closed to traffic, due to demolition works, from the 19th March for approximately two months, apart from the days 20th, 21st and 22nd, during which period the only access to underground parking located in Calle Caridad is via Avenida de España, Calle Teatro

and San Juan. The rest of the period Calle Caridad and Calle Málaga will be permanently closed to traffic as will be the streets of San Nicolás, San Pedro, San Cayetano and San José.

This is part of the programme of urban development works being carried out by the towns Infrastructure department.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona repartirá casi El Ayuntamiento cierra una semana el 66.000 invitaciones para visitar el Parque Parque de Los Pedregales para proceder a de la Naturaleza Selwo Aventura su fumigación El Ayuntamiento de Estepona va a iniciar hoy la entrega de 65.886 entradas para visitar de de forma gratuita el Parque de la Naturaleza Selwo Aventura, tantas como habitantes hay inscritos en el Padrón de la localidad, a fecha de 1 de enero de este año.

Las invitaciones podrán ser recogidas por las unidades familiares en el departamento de Protocolo del Ayuntamiento, sito en la Plaza Blas Infante, 1 El alcalde, David Valadez, y la directora del Parque, María José Marañón, han presentado el convenio anual de colaboración con Parques Reunidos, por el que todos los ciudadanos empadronados en la localidad tienen nuevamente la posibilidad de realizar una visita gratuita a Selwo.

Asimismo, la directora del Parque ha hecho entrega al alcalde de las entradas, en concepto del Canon anual de Derecho de Superficie, otorgado para la creación, instalación y explotación del recinto en su ámbito territorial originario.

Selwo Aventura ocupa cerca de millón

de metros cuadrados de extensión donde viven en semilibertad y en condiciones similares a su hábitat natural más de 2000 animales de todo el Planeta. Fue inaugurado en 1999 y desde su apertura hasta hoy ha destacado por ser un parque siempre vivo, con numerosas incorporaciones, tanto en la llegada de nuevas especies como de instalaciones.

La directora del Parque ha destacado el desarrollo de programas de Conservación y Reproducción de Especies en Peligro de Extinción. En Selwo Aventura han tenido lugar nacimientos emblemáticos y significativos para la fauna mundial, como tigres de Bengala, ibis eremitas, jirafas Angolensis, pandas rojos, titís emperador, bisontes europeos… y el pasado año nacía Kanvar, el primer elefante asiático en España. Este bebé “gigante” de algo más de cien kilos de peso ya es parte destacada de la corta pero intensa historia de Selwo Aventura y está presente en el logotipo que el Parque estrena este año, con motivo de su décimo aniversario.

Permanecerá cerrado desde hoy lunes hasta el próximo día 23 de marzo, según estimaciones de los responsables de la campaña El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación municipal de Agricultura, informa que hoy han dado inicio las tareas de fumigación de las orugas que se generan con la llegada de estas fechas más cálidas en las copas de los pinos del Parque de los Pedregales.

Como medida de seguridad, y ante las picaduras que ya se han producido sobre algunos de los visitantes, pese a tener varias zonas acordonadas para evitar contacto alguno con estas, los responsables del parque han optado por cerrar el recinto durante esta semana para efectuar con total garantía los tratamientos establecidos y, evitar así la propagación de estas orugas por los pinares.

Por tanto, desde hoy día 16 y hasta el próximo día 23 de marzo las instalaciones estarán cerradas por motivos de seguridad, de forma que el Parque esté en óptimas condiciones.

La Procesionaria del pino es la plaga más importante de los pinares mediterráneos y debe su nombre de “Procesionaria” a que se desplaza en grupo de forma alineada, a modo de procesión, y produce importantes daños, especialmente en pinos, aunque también ataca a cedros y abetos.

Las orugas construyen nidos o bolsones de seda que les sirven de refugio para pasar los fríos del invierno y que, cuando llega la primavera, o finalizando el invierno (desde febrero a primeros de abril), descienden en fila al suelo, se entierran y crisalidan dentro de un capullo.

Pedregales Park closed for fumigation

Estepona residents receive an invitation to visit Selwo Park for free Estepona Town Hall has begun issuing some 65,886 free tickets for entry to Selwo Adventure Park to residents who were registered on the Padron as of January 1st this year.

The Mayor, David Valadez, and the Director of the Park, María José Marañón, recently presented this annual agreement whereby all citizens registered in the municipality have the right to a free a visit each year, which were a provision of the original planning permission for the park.

Parque de la Naturaleza Selwo Aventura occupies almost one million square metres

(almost 250 acres) and is home to over 2,000 animals from around the globe who live in an environment designed to replicate their natural habitat. It was opened in 1999 and since opening has continued to develop its facilities and environment.

The park has an active programme for the preservation and breeding of endangered species, and has some notable successes over the last ten years with the birth of Bengal tigers, Angolan giraffes, red pandas, European bison, and last year Kanvar the first Asian elephant to be born in Spain.

Estepona’s Los Pedregales Park has been closed for a week whilst council teams spray insecticide to combat the Processionary Caterpillars which have emerged with the warmer weather.

Despite the worst affected areas being cordoned off, many visitors have suffered the effects of coming into contact with these creatures, leaving the local authorities no alternative other than to shut the park and begin eradication procedures thus guaranteeing the safety of visitors to this popular recreation area. The park is expected to re-open on Monday, 23rd March.

The Pine Processionary Moth is one of the most serious pests of pine woods in the Mediterranean, and takes its name from the caterpillars’ habit of moving in groups in a single line or ‘procession’.

The caterpillars build silk nests in pine trees, and once the weather warms up they move down to ground level where the pupate within the leaf litter at the base of the trees.

The caterpillars are covered with fine irritant hairs containing a highly allergenic protein

which in humans can cause reactions ranging from mild itching to anaphylactic shock, all contact with sensitive skin regions, your mouth, nose or eyes should be avoided. Children and dogs find these creatures particularly fascinating, which often leads to incidents which can in some case be very serious.

Campaña Gratuita de Detección de Osteoporosis para mayores de 40 años Los interesados pueden pedir cita desde el 3 de septiembre.

La campaña se realizará el 19 de marzo en el Gabinete Geriátrico Municipal.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación municipal de Bienestar Social, informa que el próximo día 19 de marzo se realizará la nueva Campaña de Detección de Osteoporosis.

Esta campaña es gratuita, está dirigida a la población mayor de 40 años, y en la misma se pretende verificar la salubridad de los huesos, realizando para ello una “Densitrometría ósea”, único método para diagnosticar o confirmar la Osteoporosis.

La osteoporosis es una enfermedad de la masa ósea, principal causa de fracturas óseas en mujeres después de la menopausia y ancianos

en general, que no tiene un comienzo bien definido y, hasta hace poco, el primer signo visible de la enfermedad acostumbraba a ser una fractura de la cadera, la muñeca o de los cuerpos vertebrales que originaban dolor o deformidad.

La osteoporosis afecta a una de cada cinco mujeres de más de 45 años y a cuatro de cada diez de más de 75, por lo que se trata de una buena oportunidad para conocer el estado de salud de los huesos.

IV Estepona Trade and Business Fair Estepona’s Employment Department (UTEDLT “Sierra Bermeja”) in collaboration with the Employment and Local Development Departments from the Town Halls of Manilva, Estepona and Casares is holding the IV Estepona Trade and Business Fair at Estepona’s Palacio de Congresos from Friday, 27th to Sunday, 29th March from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm, admission free.

Estepona’s municipal social welfare department has launched a campaign aimed at the early detection of osteoporosis.

The campaign is free and aimed at women over 40 years of age, and using a Bone Densitometer will assess bone density and can diagnose the onset of osteoporosis at an early stage.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones and is the main cause of fractures in post menapausal and elderly women in general, and until recently the first visible sign of the disease tended to be fractures of the hip, wrist, or vertebrae.

Osteoporosis afflicts one in five women over 45 and 40% of over 75s, so it is important to catch it at an early stage.

Anyone interested in these tests can make an appointment at the Gabinete Geriátrico, situated in C/ Terraza, nº 168, Residencial Virgen del Carmen, or telephone 952 792 602 and 952 794 051. It would be useful if you have your height and weight recorded on a sheet of paper to speed the process.

Restaurante Mijas Playa donates 6.000€ to Cudeca Hospice On Wednesday, 25th February a cheque for 6.000€ was presented to Joan Hunt O.B.E., Founder and President of Cudeca, at a sell-out dinner at the restaurante Mijas Playa in La Cala de Mijas. Once again our friends at the Restaurant have come up trumps! Over the festive season John, Jim, and Gerry held a number of lunches and dinners at which raffles and auctions were held in aid of Cudeca Hospice.

As a result of the generosity of the customers, plus some gentle persuasion from John front of house, and host Steve Shappelle, the grand sum was collected.

Joan thanked the owners of the restaurant for their wonderful

support and the people who had bought the raffle tickets and bid in the auctions. She also mentioned the warm response of the public to Cudeca’s appeal for financial support to keep the In-Patient Unit open.

The evening also provided the first opportunity to see and hear Los Divos, an Il Divo tribute group, which was the brainchild of Steve Shappelle who also sang at the event and was again the compere for the evening.

Mavis Tolfree formed the club in April 1999 and under her guidance the club flourished. With a new Chairman, Anne Atkinson, and with the help of the Committee the club is moving forward and introducing new ideas each month. Some month’s we hold ´Workshops´ and also Monthly Teaching Courses for Beginner’s and Intermediate Levels.

To commemorate our 10th Anniversary we will be holding a ´Fashion & Flowers Show´ in June. This will also include a luncheon. Details of this event will be published next month.

Ms Smith is an art historian, guide and lecturer at the Tate Britain and the Tate Modern.

On the same day Linda Smith will give an afternoon talk and round off her examination of modern British art with a study of developments since 1945.

NADFAS de la Frontera NADFAS de la Frontera is an affiliated branch of the Decorative and Fine Arts Society that holds monthly illustrated lectures on a broad range of arts subjects given by highly qualified lecturers flown over from the UK. We meet in the exclusive surroundings of the San Roque Golf and Country Club, Km. 127 (A7), on the third Tuesday of the month at 11.00. a.m. between October and May.

Light refreshments are available at the bar before lectures begin, and informal lunches are held after each lecture providing an opportunity to meet the speaker and fellow members. The Society also organises a series of visits and study days during the year, the next excursion being a four day trip to Morocco in May. Visitors are welcome and entry at the door is €12 and €10 for

members of other DFAS societies, with free entry for members.

Diana Navarro (Málaga, 1978) canta copla desde los nueve años. Tras publicar No te olvides de mí y 24 rosas, donde demostró su capacidad vocal y se presentó al gran público, regresa al mercado discográfico con Camino verde, “el disco que siempre había soñado”, según afirma, cargado de versiones de títulos clásicos del género en el que se inició en la música.

La señorita Julia es quizá el mejor de los textos de Strindberg y la obra más representativa del teatro sueco. Puesta en escena en innumerables ocasiones y países, y fuente de inspiración de películas, óperas e incluso ballets, la trama se centra en la relación brutal y sádica de tres personajes: la señorita Julia, hija de un conde; Juan, su criado, y Cristina, cocinera y supuesta novia de éste.

Instituto Municipal de Fiestas y Juventud Edificio Diego Salinas, San Roque La exposición consta de diez paneles fotográficos basados en el poema Desiderata, texto anónimo del siglo XVII que trata sobre una serie de reflexiones sobre aspectos de la vida, desde la educación hasta el respeto a los mayores.

El poema se va diseccionando en cada uno de los paneles fotográficos (obra de Mariano Vargas), acompañado de imágenes que pueden parecer que son de Marruecos, pero que están hechas en Algeciras. Los protagonistas son marroquíes afincados en la ciudad.

Con esta muestra continúa el calendario de exposiciones de la Sala Joven del Instituto Municipal de Fiestas y Juventud.

This exhibition by Mariano Vargas comprises of ten photographic panels based on the poem ‘Desiderata, an anonymous seventeenth century text which deals with a series of reflections of life.

The poem which is set in Morocco is dissected into each panel of photos which, whilst they appear to be shot in Morocco, were in fact taken in Algeciras.

This exhibition continues the varied programme of exhibitions scheduled for the year.

ADANA empieza su peregrinación al Camino de Santiago.

Temprano en una preciosa mañana de Marzo los 15 perros junto con sus acompañantes de ADANA salen de expedición para hacer el Camino de Santiago. Muchas de las rutas atraviesan caminos romanos con mucha historia, la Ruta de la Plata. El grupo espera poder llegar a su destino dentro de siete semanas realizando 1200 kilómetros.

El grupo fue despedido por alrededor de 100 personas, incluyendo prensa y el Alcalde de Estepona, David Valadez, los cuales los apoyaron y les desearon muchísima suerte.

La expedición, la cual se ha estado preparando durante casi un año, tiene como objetivo recaudar la cantidad de 60.000 € para construir un refugio para estos animales. Por el camino el grupo se encontrará con otras asociaciones de protección de

animales, visitarán escuelas y se hará una campaña donde se abordará el problema existente de tantos animales abandonados.

A demás del grupo de nueve participantes que realizarán la ruta completa, hay otros muchos grupos procedentes de España, USA, Australia, Noruega, Alemania, Austria, Reino Unido y Turquía, los cuales se unirán a la expedición durante una o más semanas.

Bajo la experiencia del guía y autor Patrick Elvin, los peregrinos esperan cubrir aproximadamente 24 kilómetros diarios durante las siete semanas, permaneciendo en hoteles, pensiones, paradores o en camping.

Algunos de los peregrinos llevan a sus propios perros, algunos de ellos, perros de rescate, el resto de perros proceden de

ADANA, los cuales han sido entrenados para este evento durante meses. Todos los perros están en perfectas condiciones y veterinarios locales los revisarán regularmente durante la caminata.

Entre el equipo de apoyo que sigue la expedición se encuentra un equipo alemán, el cual llevará a cabo un reportaje.

Walkies!

Early on a beautiful, sunny March morning the 15 dogs and their walkers from ADANA’s ‘El Camino’ expedition set out on the epic walk to Santiago de Compostela in the north of Spain.

Following for much of its route the historical southern pilgrims trail of old tracks and Roman roads, the Ruta de la Plata, the group expects to arrive at their destination some seven weeks and 1200 kms later.

At a send-off party the previous evening around a 100 well-wishers, including members of the press and the Mayor of Estepona, David Valadez, turned out to wish them the best of luck and to pledge their support.

The expedition, which has been almost a year in the planning, aims to help raise 60,000 euros needed for the new animal sanctuary. On the way the group will meet with other animal protection organizations, visit schools and a media campaign is in place to ensure maximum coverage of the event itself and to highlight the problems faced and caused by abandoned animals.

Besides a core group of nine participants who will be walking the entire route, there are many others who will be joining the expedition for one or more weeks with

walkers coming from Spain, USA, Australia, Norway, Germany, Austria, UK and Turkey.

Under the able leadership of experienced guide and author Patrick Elvin, the walkers expect to cover approximately 24 kms daily over the seven weeks, staying in hotels, pensions, pilgrim hostels or in cabins on camping sites.

Whilst some of the walkers are taking their own, dogs, many formerly rescue dogs, the remaining canine pilgrims are all ADANA dogs who have been in training for this trek for some months, and whilst the animals are all in tiptop condition, local vets will give them regular checks over the duration of the walk.

Amongst the support team following the expedition is a German film crew who will be making a record of this mammoth undertaking.

A weblog has been set up to keep the public up-todate with progress, and will carry pictures of the expedition over the weeks.

Medsports’ Gary Hall recently moved to Spain after retiring from a long career in the British Navy.

Having enjoyed fishing from a very young age both course and sea fishing, having spent many hours catching perch and pike on the River Stour or equally many a cold day sat fishing from Chesil Beach in Dorset.

Gary has decided to channel his knowledge and enthusiasm into a business and after many months research, and seeing a gap in the market for a local fishing tackle shop, Medsports was born.

We opened our doors to the new shop on Sunday 1st March and were delighted to see so many people attend and show their support for this new venture, a very big thank you to all. We heard some great fishing stories on ‘where the best places to fish’ are and ‘what is the best bait to use’ along with ‘what kit is the best’ to get on the market

today. Whilst our shop is still in its infancy our aim is to grow the stock so that we can provide the many types of fishing tackle and baits that are available today. We have new stock arriving every week and if we do not have it in stock, we will do our best to get it for you in a reasonable amount of time.

During the last two weeks, we have heard many queries from fishermen interested in carp and barbel fishing on the lakes and rivers local to Andalucia. We have a local guide and carp guru called Terry who has agreed to provide a free talk once a week in our shop giving advice on carp fishing, and possibly arrange fishing trips to these lakes (for a small fee to cover expenses). If you are interested please email me or phone the shop so we can arrange and co-ordinate mutual dates and times for these trips.

We are also actively seeking good fishing related stories and photographs of known local marks so we can hopefully get together a forum, form a fishing club and arrange monthly competitions.

Finally, one question we have

heard over and over is ‘Do you need a Licence to fish’. The simple answer is YES you do.

For shore and boat fishing the process is relatively simple. You need to take your passport and NIE to Junta De Andalucia’s Consejeria de Agricultura y Pesca, Estepona. Fill out a simple form then take your paperwork to the bank to pay the fee (5.24 euros for beach licence and 10.47 euros for a boat licence), when you return with the relevant bank stamp, the authorities will issue your licence(s). The process for obtaining a lake & river licence is slightly more complicated and will be covered in detail next issue.

Over the past year we have seen billions wiped off the value of shares; we have also seen big reductions in the value of property all over the world, and with interest rates at an all time low it’s difficult to know where to invest our hard earned savings to receive a decent return whilst knowing that there is an element of security in place in the event of the unimaginable happening.

It has become apparent over the past few months that less people are willing to chance their arms investing in not only equity related products but also the once mighty commercial property funds offer little solace with most of the funds showing negative returns over the past couple of years.

Solidity & Solvency There’s no doubt more and more investors are thinking their money might be safer under the mattress and I think I am likely to agree as long as you have decent contents insurance in place. If you’re considering dipping your toe back into the water then it may be worth taking into account a few important factors.

When selecting any form of investment be it a bank, building society, life insurance wrapper or any form of investment, it’s always best to do your home work. For example always check a companies capital & solvency ratio. Also check out the company’s credit rating via Standard & Poors or Moodys web sites, albeit S&P did get it slightly wrong when assessing some of the major UK banks recently. In the event you are investing through a life wrapper you can check all parties concerned, the life company, the fund and even the fund managers managing the fund.

A key difference between an insurance company and a bank from a regulatory standpoint is that a bank is not required to hold the full amount of it’s deposit at all times (but can use these funds to lend to other customers). In other words, a bank’s deposit liability (to repay its depositors their money on demand) is not 100% matched with assets.

Conversely, a life assurance company is required to hold all the assets underlying it’s unit linked policies at all times plus an additional amount for solvency margin (as outlined above). As a result there is no equivalent concept of a “run on the bank” for an insurance company since insurance companies hold matching assets at all times.

Student Accommodation Funds One fund that seems to have bucked the trend over the last 9 years is the student accommodation fund. The demand for student accommodation is driven by the continuing increase in the number of students (up 7.8% for 2009/2010 term) in higher education and the attraction of the UK as a leading destination for international students. Sector growth, and thus fund performance, is not correlated to the UK economic cycle or to the general UK residential property market hence its strong performance this year (+10.45%) and since its launch (+9.57%). The fund manager has achieved 100% occupancy this year and on average a rent increase of 6.8% located in 18 major university towns & cities. The fund was launched on the 15th of June 2000 and as enjoyed positive returns year on year since its launch. Because of the different factors surrounding the makeup of the fund it is deemed a low risk investment.

Dr Ronald Rosenfeld D.V.M Rabies Threat A group of veterinarians from the provinces of Cádiz and Malaga have issued a rabies alert! Thousands of dogs in the area around Gibraltar, within an area of an approximate radius of about 80 kilometres, have been certified – with properly stamped and signed rabies vaccination booklets – as having been vaccinated against rabies without ever having seen a veterinarian or having been vaccinated!

These are primarily hunting dogs, as the hunters have the misconception that the vaccine against rabies alters or destroys the dogs’ sense of smell!

This is a particular danger because that is at the centre of an area of high transit to and from North Africa, Ceuta and Morocco primarily, where there are cases of Rabies. There is a veterinarian in the Algeciras area presumably implicated in this fraud who sells vaccination books signed and stamped without vaccinating the dog cited in the book.

Rabies is a fatal infectious disease transmitted in the saliva of an infected carrier, most often by biting a healthy non-infected individual. At the present time, it is eradicated in Spain but not in Ceuta, Melilla, or Morocco. In 2004 preventative measures were stepped up due to a case of infection in Morocco of an Austrian citizen, the outbreak was detected in France, caused by a dog that came from Africa via the area around Gibraltar.

The complaint against the implicated veterinarian supposedly perpetrating this fraud is under investigation. It was first brought to the attention of some authorities as far back as 1993, however, the Prosecutors Office of Algeciras has only recently taken the matter under more serious consideration, and some headway is finally being made through the beaurocratic and legal quagmire. This hopefully will put an end to the fraud and thereby avoid the potential threat of a Rabies outbreak at best or an epidemic at worst!

Animal Protection Laws Last December a dog was found near death, in a plastic bag in a dustbin in the San Cugat area of Barcelona.

According to a local judge, armed with the Catalonian Animal Protection Statutes, this is a serious crime and not just a minor offence.

The dog, Buc a 5-year-old Boxer, was diagnosed with an incurable open sore over its rib cage and was suffering. The veterinarian told the owner that euthanasia was the only solution and would cost 180 Euros.

The owner being a pensioner felt that was more than he could afford and took Buc home. A neighbour offered to help by killing Buc and burying him, to which the owner agreed, despite of the sorrow of losing his companion.

A few days later and due to Bucs’ microchip, the town police were able

to locate the owner to inquire how Buc was in a dustbin in such a state. The neighbour confessed to his part and took responsibility of the 350 Euro cost of treating and finally euthanizing Buc. The prosecution is seeking proper application of the animal rights laws for the trial scheduled for 27 April. A guilty verdict could mean 3 months to one year in prison.

The owner insists that he really loved his dog. It was not his intention that Buc suffer, but that he felt that the solution offered by his neighbour was the only realistic one for him and for Buc, he felt betrayed by his neighbour.

According to the chain the pet beds are available at its hotels in Las Rozas and Torrelaguna, near Madrid as well as L’Hospitalet near Barcelona. These have been available since last year at a supplemental cost of 14 Euros.

Consultorio Veterinario La Rabia Un grupo de veterinarios de las provincias de Cádiz y Málaga han alertado sobre la rabia.

Miles de perros en la zona alrededor de Gibraltar, dentro de un área de un radio aproximado de cerca de 80 kilómetros, han sido certificados en las cartillas con el correspondiente sello y firma de vacunas de rabia sin que ni siquiera hayan visto a un veterinario y hayan sido vacunados. Estos son en su mayoría perros de caza, pues los cazadores tienen la idea errónea de que la vacuna contra la rabia altera o destruye el sentido del olfato en los perros. Esto es particularmente peligroso porque se encuentran en el centro de un área de alto tránsito hacia el Norte de África, Ceuta y Marruecos, donde se han dado casos de Rabia. Hay un veterinario en la zona de Algeciras presuntamente implicado en este fraude, el cual vende cartillas de vacunación firmadas y selladas sin haberles puesto las vacunas a dichos perros.

La Rabia es una enfermedad infecciosa mortal que se transmite a través de la saliva, la mayoría a menudo por mordedura a un animal no infectado y sano. En la actualidad esta enfermedad está erradicada en España pero no en Ceuta, Melilla o Marruecos.

En 2004 se tomaron medidas preventivas debido a un caso de infección en Marruecos de un ciudadano Austriaco, la enfermedad fue detectada en Francia y fue causada por un perro que vino vía África a la zona

próxima a Gibraltar.

La implicación de este veterinario en este fraude está bajo investigación. En un principio llamó la atención de algunas autoridades en 1993, sin embargo, Fiscalía de Algeciras recientemente ha tomado el caso bajo más serias consideraciones y parece que finalmente se está llevando a cabo.

Esto pondrá fin al fraude y así poder evitar una potencial amenaza de epidemia de Rabia.

Leyes de Protección de Animales El pasado Diciembre un perro fue encontrado casi muerto, en una bolsa de basura en la zona de San Cugat de Barcelona.

Según el Juez local y según los Estatutos de Protección de Animales en Cataluña,ésto es un crimen y no sólo una ofensa.

El perro, Buc, un boxer de 5 años, fue diagnosticado de una herida abierta en sus costillas y por la cual estaba sufriendo. El veterinario le dijo al dueño que la eutanasia era la única solución y que le costaría 180 €.

El propietario que era pensionista no podía pagar esta cantidad por lo que cogió a Buc y se lo llevó a casa. Un vecino se ofreció para ayudarle a matarlo y a enterrarlo, lo cual al propietario le pareció bien, a pesar del sufrimiento de perder su animal de compañía. Unos pocos días más tarde y debido al microchip de Buc, la Policía Local fue capaz de localizar al dueño y preguntarle el motivo por el cual Buc se encontraba en

el contenedor de la basura en tal estado. El vecino confesó haber tomado parte en los hechos y se responsabilizó con el coste de 350 € de tratamiento y finalmente con la eutanasia de Buc. La Fiscalía busca la aplicación correcta de las Leyes de los derechos de los animales para el juicio previsto para el 27 de Abril.

Un veredicto de culpabilidad puede llegar de 3 meses a un año de cárcel.

El propietario insiste que él realmente quería a su perro. No fue su intención de que Buc sufriera, pero que pensó que la solución ofrecida por su vecino era la única solución para él y para Buc, se sintió traicionado por su vecino.

Jugadores Manilveños de categoría alevín preseleccionados

El programa completo, siendo provinciales de este periodo, es el siguiente: Día 29 de marzo Benaoján-Cueva del Gato-Montejaque.

Distancia: 12.500 mtrs, dificultad: media.

Día 19 de abril Coín-Monda. Distancia : 14.000 mtrs, dificultad: media-alta.

Día 3 de mayo Montes de Málaga-Casabermeja.

Distancia: 14.000 mtrs, dificultad: media.

Día 17 de mayo Estepona-Peñas Blancas. Distancia 8.200 mtrs ,dificultad: media-alta

El pasado 25 de febrero se llevó a cabo en la localidad malagueña de Alhaurin de la Torre una convocatoria de jugadores alevines con el objeto de formar parte de una selección malagueña de fútból 7 de la mancionada categoría. La selección la llevará a cabo el Cedifa y como técnico responsable de esta, Pablo Alejandro García Bombarellí .

El plazo de inscripción para participar en cada una de las rutas estará abierto hasta las 20:00 horas del jueves anterior a la salida, y podrá realizarse en las oficinas de las delegaciones municipales de Deportes o Juventud, previo importe de 6,00 €.

En este Programa pueden participar las

siguientes personas: EDAD: A partir de 14 años; los menores de edad deben adjuntar una autorización de sus tutores e ir acompañados por un adulto.

CONDICION FISICA: Ésta debe ser la adecuada a la dificultad y distancia del itinerario a realizar.

MATERIAL: Utilizar calzado deportivo cómodo, gorra, gafas de sol, cremas protectoras con buen tiempo y chubasquero y prendas de abrigo en los meses de invierno. Llevar cámara de fotos y prismáticos.

PRECIO: Se abonará la cantidad de 6,00 € por recorrido en concepto de gastos.

Incluye la licencia federativa de un día, es decir, seguro de accidentes durante el desarrollo de la actividad.

SALIDAS: A las 8:00 horas desde el Campo de Fútbol San Fernando. La duración de las rutas estará en función de la longitud y dificultad del recorrido.

COMIDA: Llevar algún alimento (frutos secos, galletas, etc.), así como agua.

La Delegación de Deportes del Ayuntamiento de Manilva puso a disposición del técnico manilveño Pedro Cerezo los medios oportunos para desplazar hasta la mencionada localidad algunos de los jugadores desplazados : Alvaro como jugador de banda , Juan Andrés como delentero, Alexis también de banda y Facu como defensa. A las 15:

oo hora salió la expedición y a las 17:00 horas comenzó la concentración en el campo de los Manantiales de Alhaurín , instalaciones en perfectas condiciones y donde muchos jóvenes ilusionados hacían acto de presencia. La sesión constó de una charla técnica , calentamiento y el seleccionador malagueño confeccionó 3 equipos y disputaron encuentros con alumnos de la Escuela Municipal de Alhaurín como esparing . Alrededor de 90 minutos estuvieron disfrutando de estos encuentros. Los jóvenes manilveños pudieron gozar de ese día y de seguir sumando experiencias y vivencias para su formación . La prueba fue satisfactoria y proximamente repetirán en una futura concentración.

Campeonato de Andalucía de Trial 2009 El Parque Municipal de “Los Pedregales” ha sido el marco elegido para celebrar una de las pruebas puntuables del Campeonato de Andalucía de Trial 2009, que organizada por la Federación Andaluza de Motociclismo, la Delegación Municipal de Deportes de Estepona y el Club Mototurísmo de nuestra localidad tendrá lugar el domingo 5 de abril. Esta competición vuelve a repetir sede en nuestra localidad ya que las características del Parque de

Los Pedregales son inmejorables para la práctica del trial y la prueba de Estepona se está convirtiendo en un clásico dentro del mundo de esta modalidad deportiva.

La competición dará comienzo con la salida del primer piloto a las 09:30 horas y tendrá una duración de unas 4 horas.

Las categorías que van a competir este año son: Junior, Senior A, Senior B, Aficionados A, Aficionados B y Veteranos.

Estepona Spring programme of hikes Estepona’s Sports and Youth Department has published its programme of guided walks for this spring, designated “Caminos de Estepona”.

The forthcoming programme of routes is as follows: Sunday, 29th March Benaoján-Cueva del Gato-Montejaque.

Participants should be sufficiently physically fit for the distance or level of difficulty of the particular hike.

Hikers should be dressed in appropriate clothing for the terrain and weather conditions, and be equipped with headwear, sunglasses, suncream in the summer and wet weather gear if necessary. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars.

The charge of 6 euros covers accident insurance, etc.

All hikes leave from the Campo de Fútbol San Fernando (San Fernando football ground) at 8.00 am.

Food - We recommend you bring dried fruit, biscuits, etc. as well as bottled water.

Estepona Spring programme of hikes Estepona’s Los Pedregales Park will once again be the venue for the Estepona leg of the Andalucia Trials Championship.

Organised by the Andalucian Motorcycle Club, along with Estepona’s Sports Delegation and the local Motorcycle Club, the trial will take place on Sunday, 5th April.

The Park’s rocky terrain makes it an ideal location, and it is fast becoming a popular and classic venue for this sporting activity.

The competition starts at 9.30 am and over the 4 hour duration there will be trials in the following categories: Junior, Senior A, Senior B, Aficionados A, Aficionados B and Veterans.

II Trofeo Ibérico por la paz San Roque, será otra vez el lugar elegido para celebrar el II Trofeo Ibérico por la paz, en el cual participarán equipos internacionales.

Esta es la segunda edición en esta modalidad, el cual fue inagurado el año pasado como objetivo de crear un espíritu de acogimiento cultural y unidad a través del deporte.

Tal y como está previsto de momento, los participantes serán cuatro equipos, uno de cada de Francia, Holanda y España, junto con un equipo Judíoárabe de Israel.

La idea del torneo es de ken Jones, uno de los directores del Club Deportivo

Costa del Sol, Escuela de Fútbol de Arsenal de San Roque, la idea vino de

hace un par de años cuando visitó el Festival Internacional del Arsenal.

Ken Jones, one of the directors of Club Deportivo Costa del Sol, the Arsenal Football Academy based in San Roque, and came about as the result of his visiting the Arsenal’s International Soccer Festival a couple of years ago.

The II Iberian Peace Tophy will be held over the weekend of the 10th, 11th and 12th of April at Guadiaro’s Campo La Union football ground.

Despite the current economic climate, a number of sponsors have come forward to ensure the continuity of the event, including CD Costa del Sol (last year’s winners who

will once again be representing Spain), law firm Marrache and Co., McDonalds Gibraltar, La Linea and La Frontera, TransAndalucia Buses and San Roque Town Hall.

As well as the tournament, the visiting players will be entertained with a number of activities arranged to make their stay a memorable one.

II Iberian Peace Trophy San Roque will once again be the venue for the Iberian Peace Trophy, which will be contested by an international selection of youth teams.

Every Friday - (lunch optional + 11.50€) The trip takes you inland to an old olive mill, for a fully guided tour, and when in season, we see the full olive oil production process (light refreshments included).
