No matter what situation one is born into, he or she views life in a particular way, and too often it is easy to get stuck in that viewpoint. I believe; however, it is important and necessary to undergo a change in one’s perspective, and Elder’s Immersion Trip to El Salvador provided that opportunity to ten students and two teachers. The goal of this trip was to experience the rich culture and history of the country of El Salvador. During our last night in El Salvador, someone said something which I have found to be completely and utterly true: “this trip will ruin your life”. Honestly not a single day has gone by where I have not thought about the trip: the things I saw, the feelings I experienced, and the people I met. I came to El Salvador not really knowing what to expect, and I was and still am completely taken aback at just how significantly one’s perspective can change after an eventful nine days. It’s hard to continue living the life I lived knowing that everyday people die or experience immense torment just for a chance to live a life that I was fortunate enough to be born into. Even such small luxuries such as a hot shower have become to mean so much more than I ever could believe. Perhaps the most important aspect of this trip was the people we met. I’ve come to learn that most people have an intrinsic desire to care for other humans. While this desire isn’t always on display, when it comes down to it, people will care for one another before they push them away, because all we truly have is each other. BY MICHAEL TROTTA ’15
