Ronda & Phil Houghton participated in the first annual charity Cookies & Milk 5K run/Walk at the Scottsdale Sports Complex on April 10th. The charity portion of their proceeds will be going to EL Zaribah Shrine Transportation Fund to assist with the transportation of patients to our hospitals. This event was organized by the brother of a former Shrine patient. His primary purpose was to give back to an organization that helped improve his brother’s quality of life and provided around 20 different surgeries at no cost to the family. It was a family event with every participant receiving a T-shirt, a finishing medal, Shamrock milk, Urban cookies, as well as water and fruit!! A great way to spend a Sunday morning!! Thank you, Ronda and Phil, for sharing this great event with us!! When you are “out and about” please remember to share your photos! Send your photos and 100 word story about your photos to arabian.tales@el-zaribah.org

DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, April showers have brought us May flowers. Have you reserved your tickets for the Mother’s Day Brunch on May 8th, 2016? If not stop reading and call the office to reserve your tickets! Western Shrine Association is meeting in Las Vegas May 5th, 6th and 7th. Yavapai County Shrine Club has their annual golf outing to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children on May 7th. May 11th is our last stated meeting before the Spring Ceremonial on May 21st honoring Illustrious Sir Monty Fox, our Potentate for 1998. Ill Sir Monty is looking forward to seeing all the Nobles from his year present at the Ceremonial. Please get your petitions in now and

avoid the rush. April was a wonderful month of good weather and exciting events. The El Zaribah Annual Golf Classic was a success and we thank Ill Sir Tom Calvin, the Sandbaggers Club, and all the volunteers for all their hard work. The Bash before the Clash was a great party also. The Temple Guard held their annual picnic on April 3rd. We hear another class of Hillbillies was formed. Lady Dorothy and I have had the pleasure to attend many of these functions and some installations of new officers for the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and the Daughters of the Nile. Many of our Snowbirds have started to return home and the members that head north for the summer are starting to pack

up and head out. We pray they all have safe travels. Nobles, if you have not received a 2016 dues card from Imperial please check with the office to make sure your dues have been paid. Please mail a check if they have not been paid. The office will be happy to help you and will accept payment over the phone. Enjoy the Summer coming up. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

Hospital Chairman’s News

Every time I attend an Outreach Clinic, I’m continually impressed by the professionalism and flexibility of our volunteers. El Zaribah Shriners are one of the few temples that equally support two of our Shriners Hospitals for Children, both the Los Angeles hospital and the Salt Lake City hospital. Therefore, each Outreach Clinic is a little different from the last because each hospital has their own way of getting things done. Our staff constantly has to adapt to a changing environment at the drop of the hat and they do it very well. You should be very proud of the job that our clinic volunteers do at every clinic. All Shriners and their Ladies are welcome at these clinics to just observe and help out. I know that often there isn’t very much to do, but having a large contingent of Shriners and Ladies present does mean a lot to our patients and their families. It is the strongest way that we can show that we really care for their welfare. I encourage you to come down as often as you can, even though it might be for a short period of time. I assure you that meeting our Shrine patients will change your life. Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Culinary Unit

- Ken Conner, Scribe until Relieved Well, the Spring has wound down and someone has turned the heat on again. The Temple will soon be going Dark for the Summer. The Culinary Unit wishes all a good Summer season and apologizes for any burns you may have suffered from our sloppy service. We are no better than our training, which you if you have been around more than week or two is non-existent! At the Cornfest, Culinary will be raffling off a flat panel TV of some size of which I have not been apprised. We work on a need-to-know basis and Lennie thinks I know too much as it is. Tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00. Other clubs can participate in this GREAT GIVEAWAY and we will share in the booty with them. I was told what their cut was or is but have forgotten, which is why Lennie is wrong about what I know! We will be selling them from now through the Cornfest where we will have a booth! So jump in there and buy a handful! Our irreplaceable salad server, Jimmy “I ain’t got no spots on my apron” Harrison has had quintuple heart bypass surgery and a setback or two so he may be missing from the serving line for a while. We all wish him well and a speedy recovery. Some people will do anything to stay away from the salad bowl! During the Summer Darkness of the Temple you may still buy your Pistachios at Mike Fenno’s, Shuman Auto Clinic. Don’t eat the ones with the black grease on them! It may well be grease! Now you are duly warned and I have done my duty and fulfilled the disclosure warning. So until next fall, when the Temple comes back to life, Culinary bids you a Fond and Sloppy Adieu and remember we promise not practice our skills until the Cornfest at the end of August when we will be dripping butter for two days!

El Dulabs - Rick Fasano

The El Dulabs has the honor of driving the Divan in all of the parades. We also offer rides to Nobles who would like to participate in parades but are not in a unit or cannot walk in the parade. If you have a classic, rare, or antique car or truck or just love automobiles and like to have fun then this is the unit for you. You do not have to own a vehicle to belong. The unit meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 at the Temple in the El Dulab Room. For more information, contact President Joe Newby @ 602-5733321 or VP Rick Fasano @ 623-414-0990.

Legion of Honor

- Chris

Motorcycle Unit

- Bob

Hagenian, PP, Commander ATTENTION TO ORDERS! All Veterans/Active services members wanted, the Legion of Honor is in need of your service! The LOH is composed of past and present Service Members. Do you still have a yearning to support your country and share camaraderie with your Brothers in Arms? Come check-out the Legion of Honor and help us bear the colors at parades, official El Zaribah functions, and at the request of the Potentate. We have a great time bonding with each other and including our ladies in everything we do. We have a great fall picnic planned, flag retirement ceremony, and other activities to promote fun and fellowship. We need YOU! Please answer the call and help us march the colors, even if it’s only once a year we need your help and participation. Fraternally, Hicklin Wow, we survived our busiest month of the year for the Motorcycle Unit. First of all, thanks to the many other Shriners and their Ladies and Family outside of our unit who volunteered and helped with our events, you made our jobs a lot easier to do. The 10th annual Bowling Palooza was a resounding success, it was the best of the best. The final numbers are not quite finished, but we will be presenting a whopping check to Illustrious Sir George in the near future. The motorcycle swap meet was held on March 20th, it was a bright sunny and long day, some of us arriving at 6AM. Again thanks to all including the DeMolay who helped with the food service and setup. A new event this year was our work at the Jaguar Club of America annual meeting held at the Plaza Resort in Scottsdale. We provided escort service and traffic control on Sunday and manned the checkpoints for their rally on Monday. Thanks to Mike Ozee, Tom Sheldon, Jim Reid, and Jim Moulder for their time that weekend. The photos show some scenes at our practices and after practice meetings. To all of our brothers and friends, have a great summer and we hope to see you at Prescott Valley and Payson.

Mounted Patrol - Nate and

the entire Mounted Patrol Thank you from the Mounted Patrol Howdy folks, we hope this edition finds you and your families doing well.

All is well on the MP home front. We have finished the Spring Round Up at the beautiful EZ Ranch and all is well. If you did not get to attend this ride, I sincerely hope you will have the time to join us for the fall Round Up, as this is truly an event to remember and talk about with friends and family. As you know, the calendar at El Zaribah is very busy, as the Divan is very active helping folks put together the different functions. Thank you gentlemen for all your labor. We are looking forward to attending as many as possible. Of course one of the biggest functions is the upcoming Ceremonial. It is very important for us all, and very important we show our support and appreciation by attending and getting involved. SOOOOOO, come on down and demonstrate to the new folks how much fun it is to share in the good times. As far as the Mounted Patrol goes, we are planning an outdoor breakfast, a few more parades, another Round Up and Christmas dinner. And of course, we look forward to seeing you on the trails and activities. Take good care of yourselves and your families, and Vaya Con Dios.

Oriental Band - Gene Terrell,

Scribe Greetings! I hope you all are doing alright. March & April were good times for our band. We went to the Ahwatukee Parade in March and had five bandsmen on the band float trailer as well as a special guest driver for the truck. We all had a good time, and the weather was great. Remember our band meetings & practices are on the second Tuesday of each month. Keep in touch this summer and try to be happy. Call Bob Beffel or Gene Terrell for band information and questions.

Temple Guard - Bill Hendrix

The Temple Guard and Friends had a blast at our Annual Picnic. Thanks to everyone who brought a dish and helped out. We all enjoyed good company, good food, good fun. A special thanks to Tom and Jane Sheldon and all the Hillbillies for joining us and putting on a great Hillbilly Degree. It was a great day for the dogs also. They all got along great, none of the little ones got eaten by the big ones, so I am calling that a success. The Easter Brunch was great, thanks to the tremendous effort put out by the Kitchen staff, and all the volunteers, who set up and served. Erv’s special blend of coffee was a big hit owing to Walt’s ability to keep the champagne carts stocked. Thanks to con’t. on page 8

everyone who helped out, especially the ladies. Upcoming is the Mother’s Day Brunch, Sun May 8th, 11 -2. Make your reservation early and enjoy the discount. Although it is not a requirement, bring your Mother, or a Mother, and show her your gratitude. The staff at the Shrine works hard to put on one of the best Brunches in the area. Don’t miss it. Bring some friends. Just when the summer heat is getting to you, the Temple Guard’s high country Mund’s Park weekend will be waiting for you. Cool mountain air, great food and friends, it cannot get much better than that. Mark your calendars, for July 15, 16, 17. Many petitions for membership were voted on at the Stated Meeting, and we look forward to meeting these new members at the Spring Ceremonial. Welcome. Tom and Cora Sweetman have been long time supporters of all things in Shrinedom; indispensable help as a member and Officer of the Temple Guard, regulars at the Outreach Clinics and so much more. They will soon be off to be closer to family in Carpenteria, CA. We will miss them terribly but wish them well in their new home. The Temple Guard meets the third Tuesday of the month; easy to remember as it is the week after the stated meeting. Come join us for dinner and get to know us.

Apache Wells SC

- Jack

Roberts, Scrib The May luncheon and meeting will be on the 12th of May. Since the club goes dark from June till September, this will be the last chance to get together as a club until fall. See you there. Have a good summer and we will see y’all in the fall. The first fall function will be the luncheon and meeting on October 13th. We will have a steak fry on the 27th.

Drum and Bugle - Alto Bugle

The Drum & Bugle Corps has started our summer break early, but we will be back again practicing in August for the Cornfest. We have around 14 members active in our practices and performances. During the summer months we lose a few that spend their time in cooler places. We’ll do our best to encourage them to hurry back to Phoenix to join us as soon as their schedule allows. Congratulations go to those new Nobles that will be initiated in the Ceremonial in Phoenix later this month. We encourage you to join in on some of the Temple and Unit events this summer so you get to know our members and Ladies better. Then when our September meeting occurs, you can attend and hit the ground running.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

Provost Club - Jim Leppert

Greetings Provost-men We have had a busy work month with mostly Shrine and Appendant bodies and you have stepped up to the plate and handled them well, thanks to all who worked. We were also asked to do the Presentation of Colors for the Sphinx Court #65, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America for their Installation in April. We wish a safe trip to our Snowbird Provost men on their trips home and look forward to their return next year. But remember that just because the Shrine goes dark for the next 3 months, we still have rentals to provide security for and since we do not have any meetings we will be calling and emailing the new work schedules. We hope everyone has a safe and sane Summer. If you would like to join, please contact Jim Leppert (623-516-9363) or email at chijimbo14@q.com or attend our meeting in September on the 2nd Thursday of the month with Dinner and Fellowship at 5:30 and the meeting at 6:30.

SHRINE GOLF TOURNAMENT

Over the weekend of April 2nd, the Sandbagger Shrine Golf Club had their annual Shriner’s Golf Classic. It was again chaired by Ill. Sir Tom Calvin and again they had sold out tournament. When you look at the photos you will see just how much fun they were having. The teams had 3 members and a lady golfer from the Cactus Tour Pro. The Ladies of the Cactus Pro Tour help make this a great Pro Am event. Shriners also vie for the coveted Red Fez Invitational Trophy. Here are just a few photos that catch the Shriners at their best playing their games and just having fun Photos by Allen Nichols

SAMSAR DINNER

El Zaribah Nobles look forward to the annual Samsar Dinner held each year to honor the nobles who work so hard for the Shrine and sponsor new nobles into the Shrine. It is an invitation only for the Shriners only. On March 3rd over 200 nobles were invited to this great event. Many for the first time and some who had their full Samsar award were there to cheer on their fellow Shriners. When you see in the pictures the award with its multi-colored ribbon hanging around their neck that is the Samsar award. So when you see the nobles with the award at the Shrine, stop and take a look and thank them for volunteering and helping the Shrine to be strong. Photos by Mike Folker
