El Zaribah’s History

(researched by Krista Harmsworth, Arabian Tales Staff) Attending a Ceremonial is always a great way to keep your membership “fresh”. I can remember as a child, my grandparents and parents attending Ceremonials all over the southwest. It seems, that “back in the day”, travel was still organized and group travel would have been enjoyed aboard a pullman car (similar to the one picured below) travelling to Yuma on the Southern Pacific Railroad.

A Shriner on the Go in Mesa, AZ

El Zaribah Shriner, Mick Degn, is a founding member and CEO of Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF). The vision of AMSAF is to “foster a safe, motorcycle-friendly environment for all Arizona motorcyclists”. AMSAF offers scholarships to motorcycle riders to attend safety and awareness courses to make their riding experiences safer and more enjoyable. Recently, Mick and his crew at AMSAF hosted Riding for the Long Haul at a local Harley Davidson dealer in Mesa. AMSAF hopes “to help reduce motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities through education”. Events such as Riding for the Long Haul help support these endeavors. Many members of El Zaribah’s Motorcycle Unit are members and were in attendance at this great event. Congratulations, Mick, on a job well done! When you are “out and about” please remember to share your photos! Send your photos and 100 word story about your photos to arabian.tales@el-zaribah.org

DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, WOW!!! What a rush and what a feeling when you finally realize the importance of what being Potentate is all about. Walking through the Arch at the Potentate’s Nobility Ball with my Lady and our Sons brought home the reality of what we have been working for. Having Katy Litwiller sing our National Anthem and Imperial Sir Ed speak at our event gives you a feeling of completeness in your life. We are proud to serve Masonry, the Shrine and our Shriners Hospitals for Children. Giving back is a wonderful feeling. Seeing the excitement in people doing what they love to do tells us we are doing things right. March came on as a Lion and should have left as a Lamb. The Chandler parade was well attended and we had an opportunity to get the word out about the Shrine and Shriners Hospitals for Children. The Pote’s Ball saw smiles and new friendships being made and old ones renewed. Lady Dorothy and her staff decorated the place for a night under the Big Top and we were not disappointed. Many pictures were taken at the Old Fashioned Kissing Booth. We had the pleasure of having family come from Ohio to share the event with us. Our son Jason was able to join us and be in his

first Shrine Parade in the morning and in a Tux that night. We had a small reunion of family and enjoyed the adventures we shared with them. An outstanding meal was served. Our spring Ceremonial honoring Illustrious Sir Monty Fox (1998) is fast approaching. Please get your applications in so we can vote at the April Stated meeting. We know Monty and his family are looking forward to a great ceremonial and celebration. Have you purchased your chance to WIN WIN WIN THE NEW LITTLE RED ‘VETTE that will be given away on or before May 21, 2016? See any Divan, Club or Unit member to buy your chance. Only 500 tickets are being sold. The Yuma County Fair runs March 29 to April 3 for your enjoyment and an opportunity to support the Yuma Shrine Club by getting one of their great baked potatoes with all the trimmings. April will be a very exciting month for coming to the Shrine and attending events. • April Fool’s day: Bash Before the Clash (you do not need to play golf to attend). There is a modest charge, but the fun and fellowship plus meeting all the Lady Pro golfers who will be in the Shriners Golf Classic will make the event for you. There will be raffles as well as silent and live auctions. • April 2: Shriners Golf Classic

April 3: Nile Installation of Officers April 5: Club / Unit head meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend • April 9:LOSNA Installation of Officers • April 10: Temple Guard annual picnic • April 13: stated meeting • April 21: Apache Wells Steak Fry gathering - bring your own steak & plate and enjoy an evening of fun • April 25: Hunter’s Paradise Lodge meeting is and everyone is welcome • April 27: Los Angeles Shriners Hospital for Children Divan Days and everyone is encouraged to attend. Many are flying over that morning and back that night. Web blast will be sent • April 28-30: Mounted Patrol Spring Roundup Check your calendars and make plans to get out and have fun and fellowship with El Zaribah. Keep looking for good men to become Masons and hand a Spring Ceremonial petition to every good Mason you know who will be a great Shriner. Each of us can and does make a difference at El Zaribah where 1183 of the best Shriners belong. WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST • •

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

In Dreams I Walk

Imagine being a loving, devoted parent, but afraid to hug your child. Imagine being a child, and constantly being warned to “be careful; don’t play too hard.” Imagine always being aware that anything you might do – even just cough or sneeze – could break a bone. For children and families living with osteogenesis imperfecta, these are daily realities.

First Lady Lisa Gantt has asked that, as she makes her visits throughout the Imperial Year, donations be made to her fundraising program in lieu of presenting her with personal gifts. For a donation of $40, contributors will receive a bracelet with a bead fashioned as a shoe, representing her theme of In Dreams I Walk. A beautiful scarf can be purchased for $30, and an elegant gentleman’s tie can be obtained for a donation of $30. All three items are available for a total of $100. Completed order forms may be given to the First Lady. Order forms, along with donations made payable to Shriners Hospitals for Children, can also be mailed to Shriners International Headquarters, First Lady’s Program, Donor Relations Department, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631. Canadian order forms and donations may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada, 1529 Cedar Ave., Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3G 1A6. Donations to this program can also be made online at support.shrinershospitals.org/ FirstLadyLisa.

SUPPORTING TREATMENT AND RESEARCH OF OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA

UNDERSTANDING OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA (OI)

In basic terms, the underlying cause of OI, also known as brittle bone disease, is a lack of collagen – or abnormal collagen – in the bones that prevents them from absorbing appropriate minerals and developing correctly. There are multiple types of OI – each with several symptoms and ranges of complexity and severity. In addition to the serious susceptibility to fractures, OI may cause below average height, early hearing loss, dental issues and additional orthopaedic difficulties, including bowed arms or legs, flat feet and scoliosis. Many children with OI will have difficulty walking. For these children and their families everything – every activity, every choice, is measured against the threat of bone fracture, and other potential complications. The children and families coping with this debilitating disease will face it every day throughout their lives. Shriners Hospitals for Children® has a long history of developing and improving available treatments for OI, and there is now more hope for these children and families than ever before. Still, research takes time, and the treatments are quite costly. Over time, First Lady Lisa Gantt has become increasingly aware of the impact of OI on children and families, and is determined to make a difference. Her program, In Dreams I Walk, will provide additional funds to support Shriners Hospitals for Children’s efforts in the treatment and research of OI.

Dave Polner, P.P. Be on the lookout in the fall for a short series on details from Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Salt Lake City!

Help Us Make the World a Better Place for Children

As one of your hospital board members to the Salt Lake City Hospital, I am asked to occasionally bring the El Zaribah Nobles news. I am very proud... the hospital has been actively treating OUR patients, expanding programs, and getting great PR throughout the West. Shriners Hospitals for Children, Salt Lake City was the first hospital in seven states (AZ, ID, MT, NV, NM, UT, WY) to offer EOS Radiology System; an incredible advancement in X-ray technology. The system provides 3-D views for better diagnostic images, and dramatically reduces (by up to 90%) the exposure to radiation compared to conventional X-rays. Shriners Hospitals for Children, Salt Lake City takes over 30,000 radiographs a year. Since exposure is cumulative over a lifetime, this is very helpful to the child. The hospital just completed its winter Camp Un-Limb-d, which is a camp for children with amputations. (There is a summer camp that provides a river rafting experience also.) Businesses that operate ski areas in Park City, Utah allow the hospital to use their facilities so the children may learn to ski, which builds confidence, mobility and decreases their lack to “fitting in” with their peers. There were 25 “campers” with a waiting list of 7 patients. The program is growing. Three local dance schools have undertaken this program as a fundraiser for 13 years. These schools raise money by putting on a dance recital called “Art with a Heart” and sell “hearts” which then decorate the hospital. They raised $51,000 this year, and almost $500,000 since starting. These are just two of the things happening at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Salt Lake City. Thank you for allowing Hut Hutson and me to serve on their board. Please visit the hospital, and help fulfill OUR mission.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® relies on donations from Shriners, corporations and the general public to support its efforts to provide expert care, innovative research and excellent medical education programs. At Shriners Hospitals for Children, every donation and gift – large or small – is greatly appreciated, acknowledged and used efficiently and effectively to improve the lives of the children in our care. How you can support our mission There are a variety of ways to give to Shriners Hospitals for Children: • An annual monetary commitment through our Annual Giving Program • A one-time cash donation or monthly gifts charged automatically on your credit or debit card • Matching gifts available through your employer • Honorarium/Memorial Gifts • A charitable bequest in your will, including membership in the Dream Makers Legacy Society Gifts of appreciated assets or real estate

The new format of the Tales hard copy is a real change. I gave up my subscription to the newspaper years ago. Now we have the choice to read this online or raggy paper. What is the world coming to? At least this paper is more in line with my thoughts and beliefs than the AZ Republic! Anyway, the Culinary is still looking for a few good men with some semblance of accuracy when it comes to getting the food on the plate and the desire to meet the other Shriners as they brave our serving line!!! I am having to type this on my little tablet as my laptop has died and my new one is not going to be here until tomorrow. Must have gotten beans spilled on it. That’s the best explanation I can come up with. So please bear with me until next month when I should be back in business just in time for Summer. Remember I am the one with the clean apron and Lennie has the gravy on his new shoes.

MotorcycleS - Bob Hicklin

January 1st 2016, was El Zaribah Shrine Motorcycle Unit’s Annual New Year’s Day Ride. It was an exhilarating 33 degrees in Scottsdale at 7AM. We met at 8:00 at the Shrine Auditorium for coffee and donuts that was provided by Dana Dobson. It has become a tradition that the incoming Oriental Guide provide coffee and donuts. A group of 58 riders clutched out at 9:00 heading north to the Cave Creek Tap Haus for a mid-stop and a warming up. An additional group of 12 riders met us there to socialize and head south to BLD in Chandler for a hearty breakfast/brunch. If you’ve never been there I highly recommend it, the portions are very large and very filling. Hope to see you all there

next year. New officers for 2016 are: Mike Ozee (President), Bob Hicklin (VP), Jim Reid (Treasurer), Tom Sheldon (Secretary) and Jim Moulder (Parade Captain). We are happy to report that the following members in good standing of El Zaribah Shrine have now completed their probationary period and are officially members of the Motorcycle Unit; John Covington, Derrick Ellis, El Studebaker, and Bryan Thomas. Welcome, gentlemen! You will be reading this after our two big fund raising events which were the Motorcycle Swap Meet Sunday, March 20th and Bowling Palooza on Wednesday, March 30th. Thank you very much if you were among the many volunteers who responded to our invitation to join us for these two premier events. We will have some good photos to share with all in our next report. If you would like more information on Motorcycle Unit or any of our activities please contact President Mike Ozee, 602.799.1834 or Bob Hicklin, 480.371.6078 Ride free and ride safe. SMOB

Mounted Patrol - Nate and

all of the Mounted Patrol Howdy y’all, hope this finds you and your family doing fantastic and well. We want to open by apologizing profusely for having to cancel the Big Night, but it seems there was just too much on the plate everywhere, and the ticket sales just did not happen. We will attempt it again next year and get an earlier start as this is truly a great event with much to offer. We will announce it once we have a date set, and thank you in advance for considering attending. We had a good turnout at the Wickenburg parade and hope to have even more folks at the next parade. Our next big event will be the Spring Round up and party at the beautiful EZ ranch. Please look into the possibility of attending in April. See the AD in the Tales. We are bringing back our old Mounted Patrol Breakfast to be at the Lufkins’ home. Date and flyers will be out soon. Anyone is welcome to come join us. If you have any questions about our unit at all, please ask any of our guys and they will be happy to inform you and invite you to anything we do. Have a wonderful month and we look forward to seeing you and visiting and maybe sharing a drink or sandwich in our lovely Red Fez room and our wonderful staff. Until we cross paths again, Vaya Con Dios, and have a wonderful time.

Oriental Band - Gene Terrell

Greetings: Well Not much to report on the Oriental Band activities at this writing of the

Tales. We elected the officers for 2016 year. They are Bob Beffel, President; Gene Terrell, Secretary; Bill Williamson, Treasurer; Henry Johnsen, Vice President; and Merle Anderson, Camel herder In December we had a Christmas party with the Drum & Bugle Corps. We also had an OV party with the Potentate in November. We enjoyed ourselves very much at each event. We attended the Buckeye Parade in January and had a good time. After the parade, we got to go to one of the Shriner’s homes for a little snack. Lee Fults was our truck driver for the parade. Bob Beffel was our horn player, and Gene Terrell and “Mike” were our drummers. The same members, plus Jim Leppert, participated on March 5th in the Chandler Ostrich Festival Parade. Come join us and have some fun.

Patrol - Ron Miller

The Patrol is in full swing. We have participated in several parades and enjoyed the Yuma weekend. It was good seeing our friends from the Yuma clubs and Al Bahr Temple. We held our fundraising garage sale and a big thank you to Fred and Lil Rogers for allowing us to use their home. Everyone enjoyed the Hot Wings provided by the Patrol ladies at the Bash before the Ball. We are looking forward to the St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 18th.

Temple Guard - Jasper Nichols

The Temple Guard had a guest driver in one of their little cars in the most recent Chandler parade. It was Illustrious Sir George Mather’s son, Jason. Following the required, intense 22 second training and briefing, he was seen driving the parade erratically while creating a video for his memories. The parade was a great time for the Temple Guard and Jason. During the Bash before the Potentate’s Ball, the Temple Guard served ice cream cups and a movie ran continuously highlighting many parades of past years. Our 2nd Lt, Bill Hedrix, is organizing the annual Temple Guard picnic in the Scottsdale’s El Dorado Park. The picnic will feature a dog show and hillbilly degree along with burgers, hot dogs, drinks and some adult beverages. We encourage Nobles, wives, Nile & LOS ladies, friends, con’t. on page 8

and neighbors to join us on Sunday, April 10, 2016, for an enjoyable day. The annual Temple Guard weekend in Munds Park, Arizona is being planned for the third weekend of July. That event is always lots of fun and a very good time with some fine folks.

Apache Wells SC

- Jack

Roberts AWSC is very pleased with the turnout for the February Golf Tournament as well as the March Flea Market and Pitchfork Fondue dinner. Many thanks to those who participated. The money raised will be a great help to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Apache Wells Shrine Club Wheels. The April Luncheon and Business Meeting will be held on the 14th at the usual time. A Steak Fry will be held for members and guests on the 21st at the Gazebo. Social hour starts at 5PM and the grill will be ready at 6PM. Bring your steaks and any beverage you desire and join the fun. Hope to see you there. Finally, a heads up for May, the Luncheon and business meeting will be May 12th. Since the club goes dark from June through September, this will be the last chance to get together as a club until fall.

Casa Grande SC

- Hans Casa Grande Shrine Club had a great dinner and gathering on March 10th. A BIG thank you to everybody for all your hard work this year. Inga and I have really enjoyed meeting all you from the Shrine Club and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Drum & Bugle Corps - Alto

Bugle The Drum & Bugle Corps had a great time performing at the CIF BBQ on February 28, 2016. The crowd seemed to really enjoy our music. Plus it

was great to see some faces at the BBQ that we haven’t seen around the Shrine for a while. We appreciate everyone who came to support this important fundraiser. The Drum & Bugle Corps practices every Tuesday night in the Band Room at 5:30. We’re a very informal group and enjoy it when anyone drops by between 5:30 and 6:30 to look us over or just to listen for a while, join us with some libations, or sample some of that Hospitality Room culinary delights Fred & Lil Rogers bring to almost every meeting. Stop by sometime and say hi.

Provost SC - Jim Leppert

Greetings Provost-men First of all, thanks to all the members who worked last month being a slow rental month. We look forward to the rentals picking up as the year progresses. All members who have not received your 2016 Rooster please come to the meeting and get a copy as we have enough for everyone. A group picture was taken at the OV and you can order one on meeting night. The 2016 Provost Club address/ phone list is done thanks to Don Obara and is available on line or will have copies available. Please support the Provost Club by attending the meetings. If you are interested in joining, we meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month with Dinner and fellowship at 5:30 and the meeting at 6:30. Please contact Captain Jim Leppert (623516-9363) or email atchijimbo14@q.com.

Zane Grey SC - Roger Weber

On February 27th Noble Tom Jones and his Lady Teri distributed a boxful of the “Be Burn Aware” resource materials our Club ordered through the Shriners Village Store Order System. They provided the Leadership and Student Activity Materials to the School Health Care Specialists at the Payson Elementary and Julia Randall Elementary Schools in Payson and in Pine to the Pine/ Strawberry Elementary School. The same materials were provided to the Director of the Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center (CPCLC - a licensed Day Care Center) and to the Director of the Path Finder Pals (a community afterschool latch key program). They visited the Pine Fire Station, Strawberry Fire Station and the three Payson Fire Stations to provide the leadership materials to the Public Relations managers. This provided the fire station personnel with the direct phone contact information to Shriners Hospitals for Children at Imperial in Tampa, Florida, should a local child suffer a severe burn or scald that could require treatment. The materials were greatly appreciated and provided our local communities with Burn Awareness materials they did not have budgeted funds to purchase. This consisted of 400 Activity/coloring books and posters/safety cards. Thank you Tom and Teri for giving of your time to complete this valuable Community Service endeavor.

POTENTATE’S BALL 2016 Ill. Sir George Mather and his First Lady Dorothy had their families present for the 2016 Potentate’s Ball. There were Potentates from many Shrine locations present. The El Zaribah Past Potentates showed up in a very good number and many Associate Potentates from across the Untied Sated were also there. The theme was “Under the Big Top”; the Black and White panels hanging above the dance floor was a great effect. It was good to see so many people dancing to The music of Eleventh Hour. The photos just cannot share the great time fort those attending. Maybe the sight of noble Ron Miller dancing does the best job of showing how much fun we all had at the 2016 Potentate’s Ball. Photos by Allen Nichols

APACHE JUNCTION PARADE The annual Apache Junction parade is one of the many civic parades that El Zaribah does every year. The crowds on the sideline are always large and they are so happy to see the Shriners. These pictures show just a small handful of the Shriners who are in the parade. The Legion of Honor leads the way carrying our flags and the Patrol unit either marching or riding in their golf cart acting as the escort for the Divan. The Divan is always there but this time we are showcasing the actual Shriners who are in the parade. Following the Divan are the Greeters unit in their old hearse, the Clowns, Temple Guard and Transportation units with their many small car, and the Apache Wells Shrine club is also represented with their little scooters. Thanks guys for your great presentation in the parade to help show the general public just a bit of what it means to be a Shriner. Photos by Mike Folker
