You’ll Love What You See! 2015/16 STUDENT DISCOVERY SERIES

IN 2014/15, THE EKU CENTER ENGAGED ALMOST 13,000 AREA CHILDREN IN OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. Dear Educator, Welcome to the 2015/16 Student Discovery Series at the EKU Center for the Arts. This matinee series is one of the favorite activities to take place at the EKU Center. There is nothing as wonderful as introducing a room full of young people to the wonder and magic of a live performance. We all know involvement in the arts is an indicator of success. Creative expression in the form of dance, drama, or musical performances can stimulate children’s imagination and help them bring their ideas to life. It has long been known that engagement in the performing arts correlates strongly with higher achievement in both math and reading. Researchers have also shown that when students participate in the arts: • • • • • • • •

It stimulates their creativity It helps them make sense of their emotions It develops their ability to understand It allows them to face their fears in a safe environment It challenges their preconceptions about the world in which they live It develops their aesthetic sense It develops their language and communication skills It introduces new ideas to them and allows them to express opinions

The Student Discovery Series is designed to help K-12 teachers achieve their set goals in core educational standards in a way that is both affordable and accessible for you and your class. Our matinee ticket prices remain a low $6 ticket per student/teacher/chaperone with every 21st ticket free. Seating for all of our programs is limited. To ensure your class has seats, we encourage you to make your reservations early.

Etiquette Welcome to the EKU Center for the Arts! We hope you have a wonderful experience with us! We want to help you make the most of your day. A few notes about what to expect and some tips you can provide your group about theater etiquette: WHEN YOU ARRIVE you will be greeted by a member of our usher staff as you enter the EKU Center. Ushers will coordinate with your group leader then lead your class to your seats in the theatre. We recommend you arrive about 30 minutes before the start of a performance, allowing enough time to be seated and for your students to make any necessary trips to the restroom. Latecomers disturb the patrons around them and will be seated during a suitable moment at management’s discretion. Food or drink is not permitted in the theatre at any time. Cameras or recording devices of any kind are not permitted, unless otherwise noted. Students following their school’s clothes guidelines will feel comfortable at EKU Center events. Your field trip to the Center may, however, be a good opportunity to talk about appropriate dress for an event and to wear something that feels dressier. DURING THE PERFORMANCE please refrain from talking or engaging in distracting or disrespectful behavior, so as not to detract from the enjoyment of others seated around you. Please clap and laugh if you are enjoying the performance. Otherwise, do your best to remain quiet so the rest of the audience can enjoy the performance and the performers can do their best. Please show your respect and appreciation to the artists for their hard work. Please try not to leave the theater during the performance. If you absolutely must leave, please try to wait for a suitable break in the program or try to leave as discreetly as possible. Use your good judgment and don’t hesitate to ask an usher if you need assistance.
