A little fawn lay in the tall, green grass. He was a red deer. He watched the clouds floating gently across the vast sky. Just then a squirrel hopped down from a nearby tree: “Hey, you! Help me solve Wise Owl’s riddle! Whoever solves it will get seven big, fat hazelnuts!” “I’m only small. I don’t even have my antlers yet. And what would I do with hazelnuts anyway? I don’t eat them. I don’t think I can help you,” the surprised fawn answered shyly.

“You’re bigger than any squirrel. You’re probably cleverer too – although I’m not sure about that. And I want those seven fat nuts! So see if you can solve this riddle: This timid animal keeps its ears pricked when grazing in the meadow, but it is not a cow. It is bigger than a rabbit and when startled it runs away quickly. It races over the plains and likes to hide in the woods.”

“My mummy does all that, and much more, said the fawn.

When she heard this, the squirrel jumped for joy. “That’s it: a hind! That’s the answer to the riddle! Well done, little red fawn. How clever you are! You’ve just won me those hazelnuts: juicy, round and fat!” she shouted.

“One day I’ll return the favour! Now you are my friend,” she said, as she scampered off towards the nearby trees. With a hop, a skip and then a big jump onto a trunk, she disappeared among the green treetops. The fawn stared after her in astonishment. From far off, he heard the squirrel’s little voice chirping: “Wake up, Wise Owl! I’ve solved the riddle! It’s a hind! That’s my answer. Quick, give me the hazelnuts, juicy and fat!” The sleepy bird half-opened his great eyes but the little squirrel kept on shouting: “I want the nuts! I want the nuts! They’re mine!” The owl gave a deep laugh. “The answer is correct,” he said, and solemnly handed over the prize to the hungry little squirrel. Seven of the fattest and juiciest hazelnuts.
